Full textThe present study broach the scientific discourse on public libraries in Brazil, between 2001 and 2010, through an analysis of the set of statements by which the discursive practice about Public Library in scientific communication reveal their positivities. Develops an analysis from the reference given by Foucault, focusing on the archaeological phase of his thought. Elects like specific objectives of study the identity of the discursive space of the Public Library in scientific communication, the indication of their formation system, the characterization of ruptures and the discontinuous in their representation and presentation of the phenomena of order and sequence in your space. Lists each goal with bibliometric indicators to measure the characteristics present in the corpus of research, namely the 745 references of articles published in journals in the fields of Library and Information Science in the last decade. The recuperation of these references followed four steps: recovering journal articles from a search of the Base de Dados Referencial de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação (BRAPCI); organization the references of articles in an Excel spreadsheet; identification of issues through consultation of the references to bases Emerald, WorldCat and institutional catalogs the documents referred to as gray literature; analysis of bibliometric indicators. The analysis of bibliometric indicators needed to meet each objective proposed in this study were: to identify the discursive space of the Public Library in scientific communication, the use of indicators of activity (number of journals, scientific articles published, references the theme). The formation system of speech was marked by the first generation indicators (co-authors, institutional collaborations, bibliographic couplings). The ruptures and the discontinuous representation of the speech were characterized by comparing the theme of the articles and the theme of their references. The presentation order of phenomena in space and sequence of the speech was performed by means of consumption indicators (Price index, isolation index, distribution of references by language and document type). Additional information was constructed from the intersection of some of the indicators mentioned together. The research results found that 25 journals between 2001 and 2010 published articles related to Library and Information Science; 3593 articles are published in 407 editions; the theme is present in 1.1% of articles published in journals of library and Information Science of the decade; there are 38 articles corresponding to the percentage of the theme; the articles were written by individual authors (52.6%) and coauthors (47.4%); all the journals studied are extrapairs vehicles; the institutional affiliation of authors and source are predominantly academic editorial responsibility (85% and 76%, respectively); the bibliographic coupling involved 3.6% of all references used; the composition of the discourse on the Public Library at 51% belongs to the extrinsic domains Library; the references show a slight tendency towards literature five years later (Price index in 42%); there is a predominance of references published in the country (index of isolation in 63.5%); prevails the Portuguese as the language of the references (66 4%); books and articles constitute 62.8% of the references. The results indicate that the autoral function by the professionals who contribute with praxis is minimal, there is a strong movement of internalization of positivities outside the field of Librarianship in the composition of the discourse and opens a discursive space for the development of other power groups, which not traditionally come from that domain. These findings open perspectives for future studies able to deepen the discussion.

Full textIn the recent years, the Web has undergone a tremendous growth regarding both content and users. This has led to an information overload problem in which people are finding it increasingly difficult to locate the right information at the right time. Recommender systems have been developed to address this problem, by guiding users through the big ocean of information. The recommendation approaches have multiplied and have been successfully implemented, particularly through approaches such as collaborative filtering. However, there are still challenges and limitations that offer opportunities for new research. Among these challenges, the design of reading recommendation systems has become a new expanding research focus following the emergence of digital libraries.Traditionally, libraries play a passive role in interaction with users due to the lack of effective search and recommendation tools. In this manuscript, we will study the creation of a reading recommendation system in which we'll try to exploit the possibilities of digital access to scientific information. Our objectives are: - to improve the understanding of user needs expressed in natural language search queries for books, articles and posts. This work will require the establishment of processes capable of exploiting the structures of data and their dimension; - to compensate for the absence of explicit links between books and journal articles by automatically detecting and analyzing bibliographic references, and then to propose links;- to achieve a reading recommendation system based on textual data to provide a customized recommendation list to active users, similar to systems already used by users profiles

Full textThe Competitive Intelligence (CI) is a systematic and ethical process of collection, storage and information analysis so that Organizations can obtain the competitive advantage in their businesses. For the application of this process, the CI is represented in a cycle which contains the phases of identification of necessities; planning; collections; analysis; dissipation and evaluation. The information volume to be collected and analyzed, the urgency to obtain results and the complexity of the studies of the CI, all point to the importance of the use of computer tools that support this activity. This research proposes a methodology to identify a tool that would facilitate the activities of the CI collectors and analysts, especially in the information extraction of texts needed in the transition between the phases of collection and analyses. The exploratory descriptive research was the methodology used in this work, divided into two parts: the theoretical methodology and the experimental. The first was applied to identify potential collaborating tools for the complete CI cycle and to extract information between the phases of collection and analysis. The second, to select and validate a tool (software). The tool selected was the software Zotero, which acts as an administration of bibliographica and citations reference. To validate this tool, an experiment was elaborated which contained two simulations involving the collection and extraction of information with and without the use of such tool. Two CI teams particpated in the simulations: one from Manaus and the other from São Carlos, with a total of 6 collects and 1 analyst. As a result, it was possible to identify that the software Zotero supports collectors and analysts in realizing the activities in the phases of collection and analysis.

Full textHaving given a short resume of the background of maps and map making, the handling of maps in libraries was investigated. The examination of the development of bibliographic description of maps, resulted in, inter alia, the identification of their peculiar characteristics Special attention was focussed on the difficulties of the detailed description of early maps. As it was considered important to refer to authoritative reference sources for further details, cartographical sources for maps of the Cape of Good Hope were examined and evaluated. As a final step, the maps themselves were examined, with full details being supplied for 15 representative maps. This is followed by a comprehensive checklist of maps of the Cape of Good Hope (south western section), sufficient information being supplied to identify them, together with references to their original published sources, their reference in standard bibliographies, and a record of any known reproductions available. The primary objective of contributing towards improved access to maps of the Cape of Good Hope has thus been achieved.

Abstract: Several current ranking methods compare different publication venues in relation to quality or impact. This information is very important for a researcher to choose renowned venues to publish his research. Institutes could promote their researchers based on the quality of places they have published. This information about the venues can also be valuable for a government to allocate resources to universities, or for companies to evaluate the quality of a candidate for a job. There are other distinct measures to perform a ranking of venues, but the idea in common among most of them is the use of citations. Therefore, despite the fact a venue is very prestigious for its researchers, if it is not indexed in a citation database, it will not be considered, since its "quality" cannot be measured. This work proposes to construct a ranking of publication venues obtaining the information not from a database, but from another data source: the Web. The university professor's webpages are visited to extract the publications. The venue is extracted from each publication, and thus, based on venues which a researcher wanted to show in his webpage, they are ranked. This method will include publication venues that do not exist in current databases, creating a new ranking of publications. Many interesting computational problems are discussed in this work: information search on the internet, text segmentation, extraction of components in a bibliographic citation, and clustering

Full textAlthough Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been discussed extensively amongst the ranks of cataloguers internationally, no research on the perceptions of South African cataloguers was available at the time of this research. The aim of this study was to determine how well RDA was faring during the study's timeframe, to give a detailed description regarding cataloguer perceptions within a higher education setting in South Africa. Furthermore, to determine whether the implementation of RDA has overcome most of the limitations that AACR2 had within a digital environment, to identify advantages and/or perceived limitations of RDA as well as to assist cataloguers to adopt and implement the new standard effectively. The study employed a qualitative research design assisted by a phenomenological philosophy to gain insight into how cataloguers experienced the implementation and adoption of RDA by means of two concurrent web-based questionnaires. The study concluded that higher education cataloguing professionals residing in the Western Cape were decidedly positive towards the new cataloguing standard. Although there were some initial reservations, they were overcome to such an extent that ultimately no real limitations were identified, and that RDA has indeed overcome most of the limitations displayed by AACR2. Many advantages of RDA were identified, and participants expressed excitement about the future capabilities of RDA as it continues toward a link-data milieu, making library metadata more easily available.

As this research has revealed a distinctly positive attitude from cataloguers' two main matters for future research remains, being: ? Why South African participants in this study voiced almost no perceived limitations to RDA as a cataloguing standard. Future research might be able to relay information regarding this trend, especially in the light that it was not a global phenomenon. ? A deeper look might have to be taken at how participants' experienced RDA training as this phenomenon might be closely linked to the reasons why the participants did not mention more limitations.

This thesis aims to contribute to the scientific knowledge of the geosciences, over the provinces of Benguela and Namibe, through the systematization of textual and graphic content about these two administrative units, produced before or after independence of Angola. The documents analysis was based on the similarities of geological and fossil records and physiographic or climate context, as well as the characteristics of river and coastal dynamics, water resources management, and environmental conditions, management heritage and spatial planning. The study is a non-systematic collection, from different fonts, and resulted in the creation of a database. Were collected and analyzed 150 references, with two periods of apparent temporal production - the decade from 1960 to 1969 and later one after 2000. The publications in series (articles in journals or conference proceedings with successive editions) are the most common type of documents, also noting the number of thesis and dissertations. The large majority of documents use the place as a unit of physiographic areas, where the desert and the coastal areas are good examples, as well documents framed on administrative units, including municipalities or places. The most common scientific domains are Palaeontology and the general scientific domain - General Geology, Meteorology, Climatology, and Historical Geology - particularly those associated with External Geodynamics, Geomorphology, Historical Geology and Stratigraphy. The graphic content analysis brings out a smaller scale - referring to the geological mapping, pedological or resources on sub-continental, Angola or provincial scale, as well as the tectonic and stratigraphic correlation in the South Atlantic, and the climatic and paleogeographic model over the Benguela Current System, and a larger scale - on the conditions of sedimentation, reconstitution of geological or fossil records, or problems of applied geosciences.

Modern researchers may conveniently access a large archive of scientific articles through online academic databases using key words search. While online databases have allowed researchers to quickly access more scientific information, it is also overloading them with excessive information that made it more difficult for researchers to find articles relevant to their interests. Selecting the right key words to form queries for finding the right articles can be tricky as a researcher may not know what key words to use. Traditionally, one way that researchers find articles is by following citations in other articles that they are interested in. This is an effective practice, but it may limit the scope of the searching. To address the aforementioned issues, we utilize the user-based collaborative filtering, which is widely used in the recommender systems, to overcome the problem of information overloading. We also keep the practice of finding articles by following citations of articles in a research field. Emulating the logic of the recommender systems, we treat the author as a consumer of articles cited in their papers. All references cited by all articles written by an author are considered as all items (such as movies) consumed by a consumer. With the authors × articles 2D matrix, we can utilize the collaborative filtering mechanism to recommend articles that may be interested by an author or by authors of a research field. The recommended articles of a research field are derived from the aggregated interests of authors of this field. We implemented a recommender system that is capable of processing large data set to validate this idea. The Microsoft Academic Search (MAS) dataset, which contains citation information of more than 126 million academic articles and over 528 million citation relationships between these articles, is used in the recommender system. The performance of the recommender systems is evaluated by the recall rate of the Top-N recommendations made by the system. The recall rates fall in the range of 0.3 to 0.6. The system inherited the same limitation of the user-based collaborative filtering, that it will recommend articles that have been cited by other articles. The inherited new article recommendation limitation (the cold-start problem) can be mitigated by implementing the item-based collaborative filtering.
