AbstractResults of entomological and thermo-hygrometric monitoring carried out at the Angelica Library in Rome are presented and discussed. Monitoring was carried out for a whole year, from April 2015 to March 2016. The purpose was to verify the possible presence of infestations of the stored goods within the building by pest species and to evaluate the possible correlation between environmental parameters found within the various areas examined and the density of the pest species found. Several pest insects were found in the library but only the beetles of the family Dermestidae can be regarded as particularly harmful and dangerous. This family was present with the genera Attagenus and Anthrenus. The presence and the frequency of other pest organisms (silverfish, booklice and isopods) can be kept under control by monitoring the environmental parameters. Psocottera were represented by the genera Liposcelis and Dorypteryx. More dangerous pest species such as anobiids, termites, cockroaches or rodents were not found in the library.

On the occasion of the 700th centenary of the death of Dante Alighieri, medium wave infrared imaging analysis of illuminations of the XIV-century code of the Divina Commedia (MS. 1102), hosted in the Biblioteca Angelica in Rome, was performed and discussed. The investigation was carried out by means of thermographic and reflectographic techniques on illuminations where the iconographic representation appeared severely damaged. In particular, through the combined use of both techniques, it was possible to recover the images of the damaged parts of the pictorial layer of the illuminations and of their underdrawings, displaying details of the “lost guardians”, which was useful to reconstruct the conservative history of the precious manuscript.

AbstractWe present here a self-made trap we designed for monitoring the presence of insects responsible of biodeterioration in a library in the center of Rome (Biblioteca Angelica). The trap was very effective in capturing all types of crawling insects. The trap, made from a transparent plastic layer, allowed the microscopic observation of animal body from both sides with no need of removing the specimen from the entomological scotch on it. Besides, this small transparent trap has a minimal visual impact within the halls of libraries and museums without diminishing its effectiveness and it is easy to place even within cabinets. We therefore recommend the use of this trap, simple and unexpensive to prepare, in libraries, archives, museum and any other conservative environment for monitoring the presence of insects and to contain the size of their populations.

The Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma (BNCR), founded in 1875, has as its mission is the preservation of the national cultural heritage, the development of a distinctive cultural role, and the provision of strategically planned services. It must also provide extensive coverage of foreign literature, to document the main aspects of culture and studies about Italy throughout the world. The library receives by legal deposit of all publications printed in Italy. Recently it has been involved in a structural process of change that will lead to its becoming open to users worldwide. Special attention has been paid to information technology, to meet user needs. The collections consist inter alia of over 6,000,000 monographs, c.45,000 periodicals and 85,000 manuscripts, as well as audiovisual and digital documents. The nucleus of the collections came from the Jesuit Bibliotheca Major and the monastic libraries of the Religious Orders suppressed by the Italian government in 1873. The library is involved in numerous national and international activities.

The precious collection of manuscript scores and printed libretti dating from the late seventeenth century and housed today in the Biblioteca Estense at Modena is ample proof that Duke Francesco II d'Este (1660–94) was one of Italy's most generous patrons of music. Indeed his library, which good fortune has preserved almost intact, is an indispensable resource for the study of oratorio, opera and instrumental music in northern Italy in the last quarter of the century. Its contents show him to have been a man of catholic and modern taste, acquiring and promoting works by living composers active in Rome, Florence, Bologna, Ferrara, Venice and, of course, Modena. On the evidence of the Este music collection, historians have been consistent in applauding the cultural achievements of Francesco II's reign and yet, surprisingly, there have been no detailed studies of the way in which the duke exercised his patronage.

Abstract Scrolling through Elenco dei manoscritti arabi islamici della Biblioteca vaticana (The List of Islamic Arabic manuscripts in the Vatican Library) by Giorgio Levi Della Vida (1935, p. 65), I was intrigued by manuscript Vat. Ar. 594, entitled Riwāyāt ḍiḥkiyya (Humorous Tales), dating back to the 17th century. After examining its content, I was attracted to: a) its predominant use of Egyptian; b) its avant-garde intent to teach (what’s more, in Italy), the vernacular rather than classic or standard Arabic for communication purposes; c) I was amused by the ironic, moral and satirical nature of the text and its dialogue reworkings; d) I was struck by the originality of the description of its protagonists that unfold and end with sui generis moral advice. For these reasons, I decided to study his fables (143r-187v), setting myself three main objectives: to illustrate a) the representations of the protagonists; b) some characteristic linguistic elements of 17th century Egyptian; c) Italian-inspired avant-garde use of colloquial neo-Arabic for language teaching purposes, found in the works written in Rome at San Pietro in Montorio school.
