Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to provide transcriptions and translations of the twenty-seven miracles recorded in Oxford, Exeter College, MS 158 and Vatican, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. Cod. Lat. 4015 relating to Wales. The miracles occurred through the invocation of St Thomas de Cantilupe, bishop of Hereford (1275–82), and were recorded by the custodians at the shrine in the north transept of Hereford Cathedral between 1287 and 1312. This article examines both the Oxford and Vatican manuscripts and their significance. The collection is useful for study of the context and aftermath of King Edward I's conquest of Wales in 1283 and the subsequent Anglo-Welsh conflicts and rebellions.

El presente artículo aborda la historia y los contenidos el códice Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Ross. 350 (s. XV). Por un lado, se restituye una nota de posesión perdida de la abadía de Florencia mediante el uso de luz ultravioleta y el cotejo de ex libris similares. Sus contenidos, relacionados con el códice Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, lat. 2997, podrían secundar un origen alemán, propuesto sobre base iconográfica. Se ofrece la identificación del único texto desconocido del manuscrito: un fragmento del Liber de compunctione cordis de Efrén Sirio, traducido del griego en época tardoantigua. Su estudio permite deducir que el códice fue comisionado por un eclesiástico seglar desconocido que intervino activamente en el texto.

Abstract:
Among the manuscript fragments in the Archivio comunale of Sutri (Province of Viterbo), Italy, are four consecutive folios of an Old-Roman antiphoner of the later eleventh century. The two bifolios are now identified as fragments 141 (Frammenti teologici 40) and 141bis (Frammenti teologici 41). These fragments, which preserve music for the feasts of Sexagesima, Quinquagesima and Ash Wednesday, are remnants of what appears to be the oldest witness of Old-Roman music for the office. When added to the two surviving antiphoners (London, British Library, Add. MS 29988, of the twelfth century, and Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, MS San Pietro B 79, of the end of the twelfth century) and two recently discovered fragments (in Frosinone and Bologna), the Sutri fragments bring to five the number of Old-Roman antiphoners of which at least some evidence survives. It begins to appear that manuscripts of this music were once not so rare. The Sutri fragments show some unusual liturgical characteristics that provide new information on the Roman liturgy; I will discuss these aspects shortly.

The main objective of the current study is to offer the first critical edition, accompanied by an English translation and introductory study, of a tripartite Latin text addressing world astrology preserved in a single manuscript: MS Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Pal. lat. 1407, fols. 55r–62r (14th/15th century). This study also includes the Middle English translation of discontinuous sections of this tripartite Latin text as transmitted in MS London, Royal College of Physicians, 384, fols. 83v–85r. It is argued that the first part of this tripartite text incorporates a hitherto unknown Latin translation by Henry Bate of the lost third version of Abraham Ibn Ezra’s Sefer ha-ʿOlam. The other two parts include two Latin translations, also carried out by Henry Bate, of treatises ascribed to Ya‘qūb ibn Ishāq al-Kindī, the « philosopher of the Arabs ».

Abstract Studies of the past two decades have shown that late medieval and Renaissance composers participated in a culture of symbolic representation by inscribing Christian figures and concepts into musical design. One figure who has been overlooked in this line of scholarship is John the Baptist, the precursor of Christ. This essay outlines the Baptist's historical impact on the conception of Christian temporality and proceeds to demonstrate some distinct experiments in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century music for John that express his predecessory character through emblematic manipulations of temporal parameters. By the sixteenth century, several inscriptions found in Vatican manuscripts reveal that the Baptist was associated with a particular musical craft that controls masterfully the unfolding of time: the art of canon. Drawing heavily on Scripture (especially John 1:15, 27, 30) to articulate the compositional conceits, the rubrics likened the leader (dux) and follower (comes) of a canon to the relationship between John (the forerunner saint) and Jesus. Abstract A copy of the Kitāb Qiyām al-Ḫulafāʾ (Book on the reign of Rulers), identified in Ḏamār, Yemen, in 1993, is dated 8 Ǧumādā Awwal 1150 AH (= Sept. 1737 AD). Under the name of the famous Jewish astrologer MāšāʾAllāh, who practised at the early ʿAbbasid Court together with the Banū Nawbaḫt, this book displays the horoscopes of the Prophet Muhammad and of the caliphs up to Hārūn al-Rašīd. E.S. Kennedy & D. Pingree offered an English translation of the Kitāb Qiyām al-Ḫulafāʾ in The Astrological History of MāšāʾAllāh, Cambridge (MA), Harvard U. Press, 1971, Appendix 2, on the basis of “two late manuscripts”, one from Berlin, the other at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. Since then, K. Yamamoto & Ch. Burnett have edited the text on the basis of three manuscripts, adding one from Bursa, and offered a revised English translation. Meanwhile, I came upon a second copy of the book in Ṣanʿāʾ. The copy preserved at the Waqf Library of Ḏamār belonged to the personal collection of a Yemeni cadi, who was a divinatory practitioner (munaǧǧim). At the intersection of textual studies and field work, this paper, following an introduction to the text, will concentrate on the circulation of the 1150/1737 manuscript and its potential uses.

Preliminary proof of a work in progress, the essay is given as a reasoned recognition of the critical reception of Giulio Camillo Delminio’s L’idea del theatro (1550). Intended, on the one hand, as a compendium useful to orient Scholars in the magmatic bibliography on L’idea, on the other hand, as a starting point for new study hypotheses about Camillo as an iconographer. Divided into three sections, the essay focuses, first, on the relevant role played by images in the architecture of L’idea. The second part is a sort of annotated bibliography that starts from Frances Yates’ famous essay, published in 1966. In the third part, two new proposals are discussed. The first one deals with the origin and meaning of the name "Delminio", explained from a philological point of view as a latinization aiming at Camillo’s own self-fashioning. The second one highlights the helpfulness of the list of annotated images in a manuscript in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, recently rediscovered, to clarify the meaning of some cryptic images in L’idea.

Abstract:
The manuscript tradition of the Zaydi branch of Shiʿism, which since the 9th century has been preserved primarily in Yemen, is nowadays dispersed over countless libraries in Yemen and the Middle East, Turkey, Europe, and the United States, of which only a fraction has been digitized and is available for open access. Its treasures came to the attention of scholars outside Yemen at a relatively late stage. Whereas the bulk of Arabic manuscripts nowadays housed in the libraries of Europe were acquired between the 17th and 19th centuries in centrally located cities and regions such as the Ottoman capital Istanbul, Syria and Palestine, and Egypt—all strongholds of Sunnism—the collections of Zaydi/Yemeni manuscripts were established only at the end of the 19th and first decades of the 20th century. Among the European explorers and merchants who collected manuscripts in South Arabia and later sold them to libraries in Europe was Eduard Glaser, who visited Yemen on four occasions between 1882 and 1894. After Glaser sold the manuscripts purchased during his first and second journey to the Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin in 1884 and 1887, Wilhelm Ahlwardt made them the last acquisition to be included in his Catalogue of Arabic Manuscripts, published between 1887 and 1899. The third Glaser collection was purchased in 1889 by the British Museum in London—with the exception of the Lane collection that was purchased in 1891 and 1893, it was the last acquisition to be included in Charles Rieu's Supplement to the Catalogue of Arabic Manuscripts published in 1894. The fourth Glaser collection was sold in 1894 to the Kaiserlich-Königliche Hofbibliothek in Vienna, constituting the most important acquisition of Arabic manuscripts by the library at the time—unlike the Berlin and London Glaser collections, the Vienna Glaser manuscripts were never described in a published catalogue. An even larger collection of Zaydi/Yemeni manuscripts was brought together by the Italian merchant Giuseppe Caprotti during his sojourn in South Arabia from 1885 to 1919. Portions of the Caprotti collection now belong to the Bavarian State Library in Munich and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, while the majority of the collection is owned by the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan. European libraries and increasingly US libraries have continuously purchased manuscripts of Yemeni provenance during the 20th and 21st centuries.

Le manuscrit Vatican Syriaque 59 est le plus ancien témoin de l'office maronite des funérailles pour les évêques, les prêtres et les diacres. La présente thèse propose une traduction complète et une étude liturgique et théologique de cet office. L'étude liturgique met en évidence l'organisation générale de ce rituel, mis en oeuvre sur les lieux de décès des prêtres, et qui comporte des pièces hymniques et des lectures bibliques, disposées en vingt quatre séquences. L'étude théologique a permis de repérer des concepts, des symboles et des figures propres à l'eschatologie maronite. Celle-ci, tout en abordant les sujets traditionnels de l'eschatologie chrétienne, comme la mort, le destin de l'homme, la résurrection, le jugement, le shéol, etc. Se distingue cependant par une approche particulière, très liées à la mentalité biblique et sémitique. Dans ce sens, l'office des funérailles est représentatif de la théologie et de la spiritualité propres à l'Eglise antiochienne syriaque maronite. Cependant, dans l'examen des sources de cette théolgie, on a relevé une influence de la pensée hellénistique, qui se manifeste dans une vision dualistede l'homme et de sa destinée. Des compositions hymniques se dégagent un portrait, certainement idéaliste, des prêtres de l'Eglise maronite, un inventaire des actes de leur ministère et une évocation des relations pastorales avec leurs églises. Cette recherche a été menée en lien avec le mouvement de retour aux sources liturgiques et historiques demandé par le Synode des évêques pour le Liban de 1997
The most ancient evidence of the Maronite office is the manuscript named Vatican Syriac 59 used for the funeral of the bishops, the priests and the deacons. This thesis suggests a complete translation and a liturgical and theological study of this office. The liturgical study reveals the general organization of this ritual office, set on the places of priest's deaths, which involve some extracts of hymn from the Bible and which are arranged into 24 events. The theological study let us find out some concepts, symbols and proper figures belonging to the Maronite eschatology. Whilt talking about traditional subjects of Christian eschatology like death, human destiny, Resurrection, judgment, scheol, and so on, however, this differ by a particularly approach linked to the biblical and semitic mentality. On that way, the funeral office is typical of the theology and the spirituality belonging to the Antiochus Syrian Maronite Church. However, while examining the sources of this theology we have noticed an influence of the Hellenistic thinking which appears in a dualistic vision of the human being and his destiny. Some hymns give a portrait, probably idealistic, of the Maronite Church priests, an inventory of the acts of their ministry and also an evocation of their pastoral relations with their churches. This research has been done in connection with the movement of back to the liturgical and historical sources which has been requested by the Synod of the Bishops for Lebanon in 1997

L’étude de l’Ars de Priscien débutée discrètement dans les Îles britanniques au VIIe siècle, a occupé une place centrale dans la formation médiévale. Sous l’impulsion d’Alcuin puis de générations d’écolâtres, elle a ouvert de nouvelles perspectives aux réflexions grammaticales. Les plus anciens témoins manuscrits de l’Ars attestent que les innombrables explications notées en marges jouaient le rôle de véritable moyen de transmission du savoir. Une approche typologique des gloses carolingiennes révèle la grande diversité et la spécialisation de certains corpus. Le manuscrit Vatican, Reg. Lat. , 1650 conserve une collection de glossae collectae qui renvoie à l'étude de Priscien produite au début du IXe siècle, peu après la constitution du Liber glossarum, et qui pourrait remonter au travail de grammairiens dans l'entourage de la cour de Charlemagne. En tant que corpus « témoin », sa comparaison avec d'autres collections constituées plus tard dans le siècle permet d'observer l'évolution d'un fonds commun et de mesurer les apports particuliers, notamment ceux de Sedulius et Jean Scot. Ils constituent une exception notable dans la mesure où ils ont étudié le grec de Priscien, alors négligé. Les gloses faisant continuellement l’objet de discussions critiques subirent un renouvellement plus ou moins important. Il apparaît que les explications dites « lexicales », en vertu de leur polyvalence, font preuve d'une longévité et d'une propagation plus importante que celles dédiées exclusivement au texte de Priscien et discutant exclusivement de doctrines grammaticales. Par enrichissements successifs, les corpus de gloses sur Priscien ont fini par constituer une source riche en explications variées, qui, à partir de la fin du IXe siècle, a été exploitée autant lors de la constitution de glossaires qu’à l’occasion de la rédaction de commentaires, faisant ainsi des corpus de gloses sur Priscien une étape majeure dans l’histoire de la lexicographie
The study of Priscian's Ars started quietly in the British Isles on VIIth century, has occupied a major place in medieval formation. With Alcuin impulse and followed by generations of scholars, it has opened new perspectives on grammatical theory. Some of the older manuscript witnesses of the Ars provide evidences that the extent numbers of explanations in margins was real tools of transmitting knowledge. In a typological view, Carolingian glosses reveal the great diversity and specialization of some corpus. The Vatican manuscript, Reg. Lat. , 1650 preserve a collection of glossae collectae which refers to the study Priscian produced in the early ninth century, shortly after the formation of Liber glossarum, which could date back to the work of grammarians in the circle of the court of Charlemagne. As corpus “witness”, its comparison with other later collections in the century gives a way to observe the evolution of a common fund and to measure individual contributions, including those of Sedulius and John Scot. They are a notable exception because they have studied Greek from Priscian, then neglected. As the glosses were continually discussed, they underwent a renewal more or less important. It appears that the explanations called "lexical", by virtue of their versatility, have demonstrated longevity and a greater spread than those dedicated only to Priscian and discussing exclusively of grammatical doctrines. By successive enrichments, the corpus of glosses on Priscian eventually became a rich source of varied explanations, which, from the late ninth century, has been used both during the formation of glossaries and on writing comments, thus making glosses corpora on Priscien a major stage in the history of the lexicography

À partir du fonds de la Vaticane cette thèse vise à établir une typologie du manuscrit arabe chrétien au XIIIe siècle. Les différents signes présents sur les manuscrits sont analysés et mis en perspective : la numérotation des cahiers, la numérotation des bifeuillets, la foliotation, les marques de milieu de cahier, les marques de fin de cahier et enfin la réglure. Une analyse chimique du papier et de l’encre est aussi présentée. Les informations récoltées permettent une meilleure connaissance de l’histoire des textes mais aussi d’appréhender les spécificités des pratiques chrétiennes en langue arabe
From the funds of the Vatican library this thesis aims to establish a typology of the Christian-Arabic manuscript of the thirteenth century. The different signs found on the manuscripts are analyzed and put into perspective: the numbering of the quires, the numbering of the bifolium, the foliation, the marks of the middle of the quire, marks the end of the quire and finally the ruling. A chemical analysis of the paper and the ink is also presented. The information collected enable a better understanding of the history of the texts and also to understand the specificity of Christian practices in the Arabic language

Le Psautier de Bury Saint Edmunds (Rome, Bibliothèque Apostolique Vaticane, Ms. Reg. Lat. 12) est un témoin important de l’illustration des psautiers au XIe siècle. Son cycle d’images presque exclusivement marginal en fait un manuscrit exceptionnel. Réalisé peu de temps après la mise en place de la Regularis Concordia, il s’inscrit dans le contexte de la réforme bénédictine anglaise. Son étude permet de revaloriser la place du monastère de Ramsey et de saisir le rayonnement de cette abbaye en East Anglia. Outre l’illustration du texte des psaumes, les images sont l'expression d'une pensée religieuse qui réaffirme ses convictions théologiques sur l’Incarnation du Verbe et sur la Trinité au moment même où se met en place le Schisme entre l’Eglise de Rome et l’Eglise de Constantinople. En reprenant une disposition marginale de l’image, similaire à celle établie dans quelques psautiers byzantins réalisés au cours du IXe siècle lors de la crise iconoclaste, les images du manuscrit anglais dépassent la stricte littéralité pour une illustration qui devient exégétique, qui réaffirme les dogmes chers à l’Eglise de Rome
The Bury Saint Edmunds Psalter (Rome, Vatican Library, MS. Reg. Lat. 12) is an important example of Psalter illustration in the 11th Century. Its cycles of images, positioned almost exclusively in the margins of the pages, makes it an exceptional manuscript. Created shortly after the establishment of the Regularis Concordia, it forms part of the landscape of English monastic reform. By studying the Psalter, we can reassess the place of the Monastery of Ramsey and fully appreciate the East Anglian abbey’s far-reaching influence. In addition to illustrating the text of the Psalms, the images contained in the Psalter are an expression of a particular religious philosophy, one in the process of very moment when the Schism was dividing the Church of Rome and the Church of Constantinople. By positioning images in the margins of the page, in a style similar to that adopted by certain Byzantine Psalters at the time of the iconoclast crisis during the 9th Century, the image contained in the English manuscript transcend strict literality to form an illustration that is exegetic, reaffirming the dogmas held by the Church of Rome

Cette thèse offre la première édition latine complète et la première traduction française, toutes deux annotées, du texte des Rationes super libro « Peryarmenias » (manuscrit Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. lat. 3011, folios 21vb-34vb) de Nicolas de Paris (Nicolas Parisiensis) jusqu’alors partiellement édité seulement par H. Hansen et A. M. Mora-Márquez. Le texte est un cours de la Faculté des arts de l’Université de Paris du XIIIe siècle sur le traité De l’interprétation d’Aristote. Je le fais précéder d’une courte étude dans laquelle il est montré que les Rationes super libro « Peryarmenias », de même que les Notulae super « Peryermenias » de Kilwardby et un texte anonyme des archives munichoises de contenu semblable aux Rationes (probablement de Nicolas aussi) appartiennent à la tradition d’enseignement de la lectio. L’édition et la traduction sont suivies d’une étude historico-doctrinale du chapitre 9 du traité De l’interprétation — sur les paires d’énoncés contradictoires relatifs au futur — dans laquelle je dégage les doctrines d’Aristote et de Nicolas, en plus de celles de quelques auteurs anciens et contemporains, notamment Ammonius, Boèce, Kilwardby et Thomas d’Aquin. Il est montré que d’après Aristote chaque partie de la contradiction relative à un futur contingent est « vraie ou fausse », le ‘ou’ (ἢ) faisant partie intégrante de la valeur de vérité, ce que Nicolas exprime en disant qu’un tel énoncé est vrai ou faux sous la disjonction seulement (sub disiunctione).
This thesis offers the first complete Latin edition and the first French translation, both annotated, of the Rationes super libro "Peryarmenias" (manuscript Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. Lat. 3011, folios 21vb-34vb) by Nicolas of Paris (Nicolas Parisiensis) until now only partially edited in its first four lessons by H. Hansen and A. M. Mora-Márquez. The text is a medieval course of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Paris of the thirteenth century on Aristotle’s treatise On interpretation that I introduced with a short study in which it is shown that the Rationes super libro "Peryarmenias", as well as the Kilwardby’s Notulae super "Peryermenias" and an anonymous manuscrit of similar content to the Rationes (probably also of Nicolas) belong to the lectio teaching tradition. The edition and translation are followed by a historico-doctrinal study of chapter 9 of On Interpretation — on the pairs of contradictory statements concerning the future — in which I bring out the doctrines of Aristotle and Nicolas, as well as those of some ancient and contemporary authors, especially Ammonius, Boethius, Kilwardby and Thomas Aquinas. It is shown that according to Aristotle every part of the contradiction relating to a contingent future is "true or false", the "or" (ἢ) being an integral part of the truth value of the statement, which Nicholas expresses by saying that such a statement is true or false under disjunction only (sub disiunctione).
