Abstract:
The Biblioteca Nacional (BN), founded in 1712 as the Royal Library, became the national library in 1836 and has since then served as the nation's bibliographic repository and a public library for Madrid. It became an autonomous body in 1991. In a major reconstruction of the existing BN building, space occupied by other bodies is being recovered. Legal deposit, established in 1716, now includes audio and visual recordings; the BN has not however had the resources needed to ensure enforcement. The Autonomous Regions have legal deposit of all material published in them. A Reproduction and Conservation Unit has been created to conserve the valuable collections of manuscripts, incunabula and rare books. A new computer system has enabled the BN to undertake several important bibliographic tasks, but not yet to fulfil its role as apex of the Spanish library system. After many years of international isolation the library is playing a substantial role in IFLA and in cooperative activities with Latin American libraries. The challenge facing the BN today is to identify and articulate its role as it relates to public libraries in the Autonomous Regions and to university and special libraries.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the recent developments implemented in the ILL Service in the Biblioteca Nacional de España, aimed at a customer‐focused approach.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on those facts and activity figures reported between 2006 and the first semester of 2009 within the ILL Service.FindingsAs a result of the implementation of a series of quality standards (promotion of off‐site options, automation of workflows, review of procedures), a customer‐focused approach has been built in the ILL Service. Performance evaluation is a crucial issue in order to provide a better service and to benchmark with similar units in national libraries. The implementation of new electronic services and the great digitisation projects provide a larger visibility of national collections as well as an increase in ILL demand. The ILL Service continues to play a key role in cooperation and support for research, mainly in Hispanic studies.Originality/valueThe paper highlights the major quality measures introduced in the last few years in order to meet new customer needs in the ILL Service offered by the National Library of Spain. It also incorporates the impact of the main digitisation projects on the ILL Service.

Abstract:
This paper presents the biography of Santiago Luzuriaga y Odria (1828-1904), a teacher from Navarre (Spain), who enjoyed a long professional career and was the father of the Spanish pedagogue Lorenzo Luzuriaga. Santiago Luzuriaga was the author of singular works, which he called nobelas-komedias, written after the Spanish Government agreed to start paying teachers’ salaries beginning in 1901. The Archivo General de Palacio (General Archive of the Royal Palace of Madrid) and the Real Biblioteca (Spanish Royal Library) preserve some of these nobelas-komedias, which feature the peculiarity of being written with a phonetic spelling. The author argued for the necessary transformation of writing for the purpose of achieving a greater economy of language. Finally, the paper includes a copy of El ermano del alkalde dedicated to King Alfonso XIII of Spain, which is currently in the Real Biblioteca.

Abstract: In the first Greek book published by Demetrios Ducas when he was professor at the University of Alcalá de Henares (Erotemata Chrysolorae, 1514), there is a gnomological section that coincides with the Planudean version of the Menandri Sententiae. Abstract:
Abstract Through the lenses of magic, witchcraft and superstition, this article explores Veneno es de amor la envidia (Biblioteca Nacional de España, Ms. 19254), a little-known zarzuela by Sebastián Durón and Antonio de Zamora. I consider this zarzuela within its wider cultural context, looking at changing attitudes towards magic and witchcraft in early modern Spain, as well as within the context of Zamora’s literary output. I propose that Veneno es de amor la envidia was intended to attract large crowds of theatregoers fascinated with depictions of the supernatural while also helping to debunk beliefs in witchcraft through the use of humour and parody. An examination of this rather intriguing zarzuela contributes to our understanding of an often-overlooked corpus of theatrical music of the Baroque.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. The finding in the National Library and Administration’s General Archive of two valuable documentary sources (the Gymnastics Festivals of the Salesian Gallery [192?] and the obligatory set of exercises with music of the 14th National Championship of Educational Gymnastics [1961-1963]), virtually ignored until now, has driven this work. The main aim of this article is the historicist reconstruction of educational gymnastics practices during Franco´s regime through transcription, parts assembly, analysis and correlation between music and movement, edition and critical study of body exercises, sounds and letters contained therein, which shed light into their context. The study concludes that Gymnastics, Music and, especially, its right coupling were the touchstone of the esthetic and educational ideology of the Movement, as they were thought to bring an enormous benefit to the moral and intellectual education of young people. At the same time, the above mentioned disciplines were used as effective propaganda, fundamentally by means of the organization of great pomp, performances and gymnastics exhibitions, which proved an authentic patriotic window to the world, in which, in a massive and enthusiast way, the national spirit of participants and spectators was moulded and lifted.
