Tidligt i Kirkens historie er bøger blevet anset som åndelige våben. Denne tradition kan føres tilbage til jødedommen, men også apostlen Paulus har understreget betydningen af 'åndens sværd' i kampen mod det onde. I klostrene i middelalderen var biblioteket det vigtigste rum efter kirken og sakristiet. Biblioteket var ofte placeret ved sakristiet, og har givetvis haft sin oprindelse i den samling af liturgiske bøger, der fandtes der. Vi oplever den på scenen, hører den bippe ind på mobiltelefonen, følger den mellem venners statusopdateringer på Facebook, passerer den på gaden som street art, downloader den som applikation og finder den stikke frem blandet med andre kunstformer. Litteraturen anno 2012 breder sig således ud over bogen til et udvidet felt. Og vel at mærke et felt, der til stadighed ekspanderer, idet antallet af platforme, hvor litteraturen finder sted, er i vækst.
