Grata, Giulia. "Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle entre la France et l’Italie : Correspondances de 1549-1552 conservées à la Bibliothèque Municipale de Besançon." Besançon, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009BESA1016.
Full textThe present dissertation pursues two main goals: on the one hand, to make a contribution to the inventory/recension of the Papiers Granvelle and to provide researchers with a critical edition of a selection of mostly unpublished letters; on the other hand, to study the social dynamics and political and cultural implications of the body of correspondence of Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, Habsburg Minister, between Charles V’s Italy and king Francis Henry II’s court. The documents corpus in question spans over the period from May 1549 and February 1552, with a special cluster in the year 1551, a crucial period in Charles V’s reign. The documents studied are preserved in the collection of the Municipal Library of Besançon. The first part of the corpus studied is made up of letters in French belonging to the oldest collection of the library, the Collection Granvelle: it consists of twenty-one letters, partly published in the nineteenth century, sent by Antoine Perrenot to Simon Renard during his diplomatic mission to the French court on behalf of the emperor. The letters in Italian, most of which are yet unpublished, are drawn from the Trumbull Manuscripts collection, acquired by the library at an auction in England in 1992. They amount to twenty-four documents exchanged between Granvelle, then at the court, and various Italian speaking correspondents resident in Milan, Correggio, Mantua and Nancy. The dissertation is divided into two volumes. The first part of the first volume provides an analysis of the documents on the basis of the historical data that can be drawn from them. On the foreign policy front, we present the activity of informers operating at Granvelle’s service, regularly sending him news concerning war preparations against the emperors and on the feudatories’ loyalties and treasons. The second part of the second volume is divided into three chapters and provides an analysis of the letters from the point of the code which is employed in them. The second volume contains a critical edition of the documents. After presenting a general overview of the Papiers Granvelle, of the circumstances under which they were collected and subsequently disseminated throughout a number of European archives, as well as of past publications through the centuries, the focus turns to the two groups of letters selected – French and Italian – and to the Besançon library collections in which they are preserved; we provide a physical description of the documents and their scripts along with a study of the state of the language they represent

Full textThe development of public libraries answers a concern for the diffusion of reading. Such a mission of public reading adds further to the conservation of literary works. As cultural equipment, libraries promote some literary values. Their acquisition policies, the librarians advices, lead towards the valorization of some novelistic work and documentaries. Such characteristics induce to analyses the frequenting of libraries as the one of other cultural equipment (museums, theatres, classical music concerts, etc. ). The proximity of young people with the cultural universe of libraries i. E with the choices and values they defend, create the conditions of their entry to these cultural equipment. In the first part one thus shows that family and juvenile cultural resources rise the probability of joining a library. In the second part, the study of the reasons for the renewal of joining leads to qualifying the analysis in terms of cultural resources. Youngsters from the upper social classes leave libraries more than those from middle or lower social classes. There is a limit beyond which the accumulation of cultural resources works against the keeping of library membership. The limits of the cultural resources explicative process leads to studying the frequenting of libraries according to other hypothesis

Full textThe cultural sector is known for its economic fragility. Thus, being the first sacrificed because of the budgetary constraint, the libraries are regularly face financial problems with which they must adapt. Librairies have therefore to introduce changes, to adopt new approaches and methods of management. Decision makers have many alternative choices and methods of management. They can either drawback and try to face the budgetary changes by internal rehandlings or they can decide to tariff the services to ensure of the financial re-entries. They can also prefer to seek financial and other kinds of assistance from outside ; to share certain services and resources with other organisations and thus to cooperate ; or to entrust in subcontracting certain tasks to a public or private independent entity. Our investigation into the French libraries of the average cities (of 20 000 to 100 000 inhabitants) shows that all of these administrative choices are implemented. The reasons are multiple and vary from one library to another. But the decisions seldom depend on managerial reasoning. Managerial tools and actions still remain ambiguous concepts for the professionals. For a number of them, there remains an inadequacy between culture and economy. Consequently, the way of managing their establishment relies more on intuition, bias, than on a true economic rationalisation. On the basis of this report, this work concludes on the proposal of the construction of a decision-making aid tool which would allow the decision makers to consider the real opportunity of the choices they have in the field of library management

Full textAt the dawn of the renaissance, a new technique, the art of printing, made rapid progress in europe. Printing appeared in lyons in 1473, three yearts later than in paris. In spain, it began in segovia in 1472. Conditions in spain and lyons in the second half of the 16th and more specially in the 17th century were the reason why lyons was interested in publishing works by spanish authors, works of great quality. This study sheds light on the frequent links between lyons and sapin, with regard to the world of editions. As a matter of fact, an extensive portion of the editions of 16th and 17th century books was made in lyons, not only in spanish, but also in italien, and most of all, in latin and in franch. Also by studying the works of the part-dieu library in lyons, of the authors, subjects and editions, one comes to the conclusion that during the 16th and 17th centuries there was an important spanish cultural contribution to france, by means of editions from lyons, in subjects as widely varying as literature, philosophy, humanism, religion, politics, medicine, and pharmacy. This study proves that the french read this important spanish production, that they liked it and were influenced by it. Spanish cutlure thus had a real influence in france.

Full textGilles de Chin follows Le Livre des Amours du Chastellain de Coucy et de la Dame de Fayel in the manuscript Godefroy 50 of the Bibliothèque municipale of Lille. Created in the lillois' scriptorium of the burgundian lover of books Jean Wavrin, illustrated by his miniaturist "le maître de Wavrin", the work was listed int he inventory set after the dead of Philippe le Bon (1467). In the introduction (tome 1), the author presents this manuscriptt of Gilles de Chin, then this of the Bibliothèque Royale of Bruxelles n° 10237, its minut, and finally the late copy of versified text of the XIIIe century (Arsenal n°3140) source of the prosaic text. The she analyses how is forged the translation in prose : separation of the textual matter, suppressions, adds and developpements and she enters upon the important question of the purpose of the translation : flatter the great duke of Occident and the Hainaut's nobility through their like for the chivalrous values of leaving off medieval period. Follows a stylistic study and a grammatical study : graphies, phonetic, morphology, syntax, the picardisms vouching his geographic origin, the appendixes : cartography, grammatical table, comparative table of the proverbs, interventions of author. . . Brings precious indications. The second tome is reserved at the text, presented with descriptive foot notes, followed by variants of the Brussels' manuscript. A comparative index combines the proper names of the prose with those of the poem allowing to ascertain the actualisation of the narrative. A detailed glossary picked up all the words o the text (except stop words). It points out locutions and specific expressions of the language of epoch

Full textThis thesis is founded on the corpus of french “grands motets” which are part of the collection of the Lyon public library, and tries to explain the question of musical practice in Lyon in the 18th century. The ninety-nine manuscripts and engraved sources conserved in the collection are scores and material which come mostly from the ancient “académie des beaux-arts”, also known as Concert. The first part of the thesis presents the context of Grand motet performances in Lyon, namely the Concert, which was active from 1713 to 1773, the short-lived “académie des Jacobins”, the yearly ceremony of the vow for salvation of the king Louis XV, and also public festivities and spiritual concerts. The corpus of motets conserved in Lyon is the subject of a rigorous analysis: the second part is dedicated to the catalogue of the Concert, the musical support (music papers, watermarks and musical handwritings) and to musical elements which appeared in the sources. The third part presents Lyon’s repertory of the motet genre. Half of the corpus is made up of Lalande’s works; most of the composers are from the Court or the capital, but there are musicians from other French provinces (Pétouille, Valette de Montigny, …) and also from Lyon (Estienne, Bergiron du Fort-Michon, Belouard…). The specific nature of the treatment of the motet in Lyon is brought to the fore by a comparison of the sources, while local particularities appear, like the composition by “fragments”. This study shows that if Lyonnais music belonged to its time, it nevertheless developed its own characteristics

Full textMaterial of this study is a choice of eight manuscripts of French dramatic music from the 18th century, preserved in the municipal library of Lyons : motets, cantatas, operas ("pastorale" , "pastorale heroique", "tragedie lyrique" , "ballet heroique"). Before each restoration (text and music), there is a biography of composers and librettists with a historical and literary analysis that also point out possible connexions with the freemasonery, abowe principal origins of texts and musics. A commentary on harmony, melody and rythm determines the caracters of these works and their place in the story of music. Thus, several different composers and writers, whose works had been forgotten till to-day, are brung to light. They represents a typical sample of baroque taste and art in France

Full textThe breviary in the municipal library of Chambéry, Ms4, was made at the request of Marie de Savoie (1411-1469), the daughter of the Duke Amadeus VIII and the wife of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan. Each of the 106 textual in the book is marked by an initial with a religious scene; the margins, on the other hand, are transformed into a playground for secular motifs (naturalistic animals, Putti, etc. ) lodged on spiralling tendrils. P. Toesca and later art historians have distinguished two main painters in the book, the master of the vitae imperatorum, assisted by a collaborator who imitates his style, and Belbello da Pavia who appears on four folios. Although the manuscript has long been recognized as one of the masterpieces of Lombard illumination, providing both a fine example of the style of the duke of Milan's preferred painter and a display of naturalistic animal-painting, it has never been fully studied in terms of its make-up, style or iconography. Since 1969 the manuscript, which is painted by several artists closely related in style, has been embroiled in an often nebulous debate launched by A. Stones concerning the distinction between the styles of the master of the vitae imperatorum and the Olivetan master. The system of marginalia, however, which is quite exceptional in Lombard illumination of the period, has never been studied and forms the centrepiece of this thesis. The study proposes as sources of inspiration for the marginalia a thirteenth-century north French manuscript in the duke's library as well as a model-book on animal studies, then regroups and traces the history of the relatively few manuscripts that prolong the tradition

Full textThe @purpose of this thesis consisted in editing the anonymous version of the Legenda Aurea de Jacques de Voragine, according to the manuscript of Tours, Bibliothèque Municipale, 1008. This version includes 50 legends of lives of saints, virgins and martyrs, in a French-Italian scripta. In the part edition are added diverse chapters, such as a study of the language of the manuscript, a philological analysis of the place of this version in the literature of Italy of the North and in the tradition of Legenda Aurea, the sanctoral of 50 selected legends, as well as a glossary and an index of the proper nouns

Full textThis thesis deals with the history of the french jesuit libraries of the contemporary era. It begins with the year of the universal restoration of the Order in 1814 and spans ot 1998, when the french jesuits closed the Centre culturel des Fontaines in Chantilly. It was home to the biggest french jesuit library, la Bibliothèque des Fontaines, which houses about 500 000 volumes. The library was subsequently relocated to the public library in Lyon as part of an official loan from the jesuits to the Lyon city council. The Fontaines library is a fusion of various and distinct book collections and is the main theme of this research study. It provides a global perspective to a relatively unknown subject. Our research covers the history of the books and libraries and also analyses it from the religious, political, social and cultural view point. This is necessary as the Society of Jesus is, by definition and by vocation, a religious order that is involved in world affairs. We have documented how these libraries were created and by whom and under what circumstances and for what purpose (religious, education, etc. ). We show that the jesuit libraries extend well beyond their basic function to mirror the times and the ideas that characterise that period. The theme of peregrinations is also central in this research. The 19th and 20th centuries in France were characterised by revolutions, wars and laws against religious orders. These factors forced the jesuits to migrate to neighbouring countries, taking with them their book collections

Full textThe first version of "Chroniques des rois, ducs et princes de Bretagne" was ordered by Jean de Châteaugiron, lord of Derval and Pierre Le Baud finished writing it in 1480. Only two manuscripts reached us : the original, preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (ms fr.8266),was partially edited in 1907 by Charles de LaLande de Calan, whereas the second, which canbe found at the Bibliothèque municipale d'Angers and is a copy of the first, was never transcripted. This edition transcribes the manuscript 941 in its entirety, meaning all the three books written on over 406 folios. This transcription also analyses the method the chronicler used to compile the text, the linguistic characteristics of the scribe andthe differences with the manuscript 8266 of theBibliothèque nationale de France. A glossary, aswell as an index of persons, an index of locations and an index of sources, will also enlighten the historical, geographical and cultural aspects of this publication

Full textThe @title The Book of the life of the saints was chosen according to the lexicon adopted in the table of the collection of the manuscript and in the initial columns (sections) in each of the legends. These research works in edition of medieval texts consist of three parts : a first chapter is dedicated to a literary approach. It is about a study of the structure of the legendier having for objective to determine four sources to the original compilation which results from it (in six different sections), the place of the légendier in the whole of the collection, through the study of a logic of compostion (recruitment of the legends, the image conveyed by the holy selected players), the definition od a Christian message (manifestly female ?) A second chapter (shorter) is dedicated to the presentation of the language of the edited texts. It is about a linguistic study allowing to clarify the picarde's color of the scripta in the objective to familiarize a possible reader, to supply proportions of use of the raised linguistic phenomena and to establish links between texts stemming from diverse sources. The third chapter, which is the main one, dedicates itself to the edition of the text. It is introduced by principles and methods of edition which explain the editorial choices of the transcription towards the edition. Follows the current edition of twenty four legends, a glossary aiming not only at supplying a definition of the words and an exhaustive directory of their occurrences int he text, but also examples in context allowing to supply an immediate image of the meaning. A table of the proper nouns completes the work

Full textThe present study deals with French conservatoires from the French Revolution to World War One. It is based on the examples of the musical schools of Besançon, Caen, Rennes, Roubaix and Saint-Étienne. The first part establishes the international story of these structures through their inscription within global evolutions on either a national or a European scale. The second part offers a cross analysis of the educative schemes at work within these schools, from the enunciation of politics to be followed (the objectives) and the means chosen to enact them, to reach the reality of the teaching (the results). The third part proposes an approach of the existing link between the evolution of the conservatoires and of the local musical life, of the impact of music schools - and of teachers - upon musical economy
Silighini, Réjane. "Les représentations de Jeanne d'Arc à Rouen, en particulier à travers la collection de Camille Vallery-Radot." Thesis, Normandie, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017NORMR146.
Full textBy the end of the 19th century, Joan of Arc became one of the key character, shaped and raised as a symbol, she is at the core of political stakes. The Camille Vallery Radot's collection fits this context. She was born in 1880 and was contemporary of that period. She became passionate about Joan of Arc at the early age to her death in 1927. She collected everything she can find about her heroin, in total around 10 000 documents. This collection is a certain contemporary viewpoint, even exhaustive, of the period which will gradually built the Pucelle d’Orléans to a strong mother country symbol. Her collection witnesses the creation of myth and cult of Joan of Arc for the entire French population to become a product to rising tourism. Joan of Arc becomes the mainspring of cultural politics which arise at that time. In Rouen, preservation and development of patrimony linked to the heroin is deep in the heart of the procedures that leads not only to a commemoration, but also to a challenge of attractiveness issue

Full textThe scriptorium of Saint-Martin of Tours was a center of prosperous artistic production (architecture, sculpture, epigraphy, wall painting, manuscripts), marked by Alcuin’s years splendors : the codex « B. M. Tours, Ms 193 » joins in this scripturary and iconographic tradition. Composite manuscript (Sacramentary of 1180, Antiphonary of XIIIth century, historic documents of the XIIIth-XIVth centuries), witness of experimentations in the constitution of missals, its study revealed a liturgical alcuinian inheritance. Its ornementation gives evidence of a martinian worship, apostolic, marial, christologic, trinitarian, revelation of an assertion of the martinian community in front of powers present in the city (bishop, burgess), plea for united Ecclesia. This codex « B. M. Tours, Ms 193 » embodies Memoria of Saint-Martin of Tours, glorifying its place of realization, its community, restoring, for XIIth century, an untold prestige after Alcuin

Full textIn 966, the Duke of Normandy Richard I established in the sanctuary of Mont Saint-Michel a community of monks. The liturgical life of this community is known to us from several books of the Divine Office and Mass copied between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. This thesis is dedicated to the study of two of these liturgical witnesses, ordinals produced at the end of the Middle Ages (Avranches, BM, MS. 46, Avranches, BM, MS. 216). Both manuscripts describe the ceremonial and chant of each day of the temporal and sanctoral cycles. Their codicological, palaeographic and liturgical analysis must make it possible to study the relation of these books and their dependence with regard of the primitive Liturgy of Mont Saint-Michel, as well as the code and evolutions of the liturgical usages of the abbey. The thesis also presents a prototype for the XML-TEI edition of the ordinals, offering tools for indexing the liturgical text and its secondary modifications. This prototype was used to realize the critical and numerical edition of a part of the ordinals of the Mont Saint-Michel corresponding to the periods of Advent and Christmas

Full textThe history of the watchmaking schools in Besançon is part of the birth and continuous development of a specific industry in a very limited sector of the French territory. When studying those schools we start at the « protoindustrial » time with its roots in the revolutionary ideals of 1793 and end up with the technological upheavals of electronics and the « quartz » technology in the 1970s. Three « schools » followed one another over the long term. Each school aimed at satisfying the demands of a watchmakng industry confronted to rapidly changing technical evolutions ; so it innovated in its own way by creating an original « corpus » in the students training and most of the time upset the practices and common ideas of the time. If the first two « schools » had a limited lifespan, the last one created in 1861 by the town council itself has been supporting the industrial growth of the city and the surrounding region. Since its foundation it has stuck to the industrial reality by placing the emphasis on high standards and opening new specific branches whenever necessary, thus answering the needs of firms always looking for highly qualified staff. For a large number of French people Besançon became the « capital town of the watchmaking industry » thanks to the shops or repair workshops kept by Besançon-trained former students all over France… It served as a background to set up research and university laboratories in the city : Observatoire Chronométrique, Ecole d’Ingénieurs, Centre d’Etudes Horlogères et de Développement Industriel (Cétéhor)… It contributed to the industrial diversification of the town in fields related to watchmaking such as mechanical cutting, micromechanics, equipment and microtechniques. It was nationalized in 1891 and then belonged to the very small elite goup of the Professional National Schools that influenced the future industrial development of the country. In 1933 it moved into sparkling-new premises and was acknowledged as the flagship of technical education in France : it offered a large number of innovating courses ranging from the skilled worker to the engineer and was granted the latest equipments in every field. The path of this new school also enhanced a « humane » and « prosopographical » history ; it highlighted the part played by the numerous former students who created their own successful businesses. Being faithful to their old school they contributed to the renown and economic growth and prosperity of the city and its region… Beyond the local impact we must regard the history of the watchmaking schools as an important part of the history of Technical Education in France. To meet the needs of a soaring watchmaking industry they opened the way to the transfer of professional training from apprenticeship in workshops with its observed shortcomings to education in technical high schools. Their pedagogical innovations, the strong support of their former students created a vital school-business link that still lives on in the collective memory of the town inhabitants. In 1974 its name changed to Lycée Jules Haag thus losing any reference to watchmaking. Let us now try and understand the strong influence and success of those watchmaking schools, the active part they played in the economic industrial prosperity of a town and its surrounding region…
Lhuillier, Laurence Marion. "Place et images des langues étrangères dans les bibliothèques municipales françaises : un cas pour les sciences de l'information." Thesis, Grenoble, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012GRENL001/document.
Full textInitiated and informed by years of professional experience dedicated to providing foreign language resources in a French public library, this research questions the positioning of the library as an institution anchored in the principle of equal access to public service, in the context of a decline in both attendance and enrolment as well as that of increased international migration and multilingualism. The argument focuses on the transformation of practice and professional representation generated by the introduction of foreign language material in France's municipal libraries and questions the notions of “general public,” “information,” and “institutional positioning.” A quantitative survey assesses the size of the phenomenon. The qualitative survey analyses observations collected during face-to-face interviews with professionals, with non-library users as well as with elected representatives responsible for overseeing public libraries. Results reveal a real, albeit limited evolution: while numerous libraries now provide resources in foreign languages, such offers remain small in terms of both volume and value. They also highlight a lack of understanding of the nature and expectations of target audiences, the disruption of professional practice and representation generated by the acknowledgment of language as one of the criteria to shape the offer of resources, the transformation of the positioning of public librarians, of audiences and, more generally, of an institution not yet substantially involved in the field of foreign languages. In conclusion, the results show that this question goes beyond the sole decision-making power of public libraries themselves and falls more broadly in the remit of territorial and national authorities. Whether the development of foreign language resources in French public libraries is merely a passing shadow or, on the contrary, a significant evolution remains to be determined

"Sur un air épique, sur un air lyrique : célébrer le bon connétable : édition critique et commentaires du manuscrit 428/(306) de la bibliothèque municipale d’Aix-en-Provence contenant La Chanson de Bertrand du Guesclin de Cuvelier suivie de pièces lyriques." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016AIXM3013/document.
Full textThe manuscript Aix-en-Provence, municipal library, 428(306) contains two different texts. The first, La Chanson de Bertrand du Guesclin, is a rimed epic poem telling the life of Bertrand du Guesclin (1320-1380), a Britain knight from a modest background who took part of the One Hundred Years War, and would become the constable of France. This biography has been written by a certain Cuvelier between 1380 and 1385, right after Bertrand's death. The second is a set of seven lyric poems written in memory of Bertrand, three of which were written by Eustache Deschamps. The first text, at the same time historical, epic, a tribute, biographie and poem, has a considerable importance in the literary production of the day as the last chanson de geste to be written in French. The poems celebrating the constable are fully in line with the lyric revival of the end of the 14th century. Through our study, we like to discover or rediscover this underrated work ; we will provide original text of the manuscript, descriptions of the other manuscripts, a literary review including a study of the context and new information about the author, a linguistic study, critical notes, a glossary, an index, a list of proverbs, and a comprehensive bibliography
