Full textGrounded on a rich audiovisual corpus, this dissertation focuses on the audiovisual representations of the commemoration of the American Revolution Bicentennial. Composed of three chapters, this work analyzes the process of memory and identity making that emerged from this anniversary. My research shows the demagogic, ideological and prophetic caracter of the commemoration, a series of events that celebrate the past in order to restore unity, form the national identity and shape the country’s future. The first chapter examines two pivotal aspects of the celebrations: in the one hand, the importance that the adverse context of the seventies played in the development of the audiovisual materials, and on the other hand, how the organizers of the events instrumentalized the past in order to reinstate the national unity. This instrumentalization led to the construction of a national mythology and the preservation of the collective memory. In the second chapter, I analyze the various national and international projects along with the public targeted or consciously forgotten by the organizers. In this chapter, the popular character of the commemoration is highlighted and I unveil the identity myth that went with it. Multiculturalism and historical context pushed the government and the organizers to imagine worldwide celebrations, and an universalization of the memory process evolving around the messianic temptation of the United States. Finally, I demonstrate how the national collective memory was remapped through a selective representation of the Revolution’s events, figures, and values using different broadcasting methods and formats adjusted to audiovisual stakes

Full textTo commemorate is not only to recall a glorious or original past; it is the possibility for a communauty to express, consolidate or reveal what binds it. The bicentenary distinguishes itself almong all ceremonies by showing how difficult it is today for the French nation to find a new speech replacing the idea of the nation's identity, to wide to keep its attractiveness. This is why there now is a local creation of smaller concepts which reconstruct an identity, able to fit our present. It is done outside out of any theology, ruling the idea nation but with the hope of a new socialization and type of community. The local expansion provoques a new conception of time, using the past to justify the present, due to the absence of any clear future. Thus, the bicentenary indicates the new management - impossible nation wide without the play on national stereotypes introduced by J. P. Goude - of aesthetics and politics in which the process to use art is being accused of being directed , but is also invided to promote and settle locally the feeling of being part of one big fraternity divided into a multitude of little islands. The methodology of this report is clearly pragmatic. Its basis is the analysis of the speeches of well-known people, the amount of money invested by "regions" or municipalities, the going-through of poll covering 10 744 "communes" each having less than 10 000 inhabitants, on the study of the remarks of the local actors, the description of the celebration , and, finally, on two global interviews done in 1988 and 1989

Full textThis thesis presents an overall inventory of the tv programs during 1989 concerning the theme of the French revolution and its commemoration. The analysis of those broadcasts enables to define the bicentenary televisual representation offered to the audience. The part I defines the commemorative concept as it appears in the mission records il assigns to assess what specifically could tv offer compared to the other media used for the previous commemorations. The part ii establishes the quantitative assessment of the tv programs devoted to the Revolution by classifying them through themes, genres, times broadcast schedules. . . This analysis put on evidence the "mission-effect" which results in a rise of spectacle-shows and documentaries. The part III which analyses the contents of the programs financed by the bicentenary mission have developed the rights of man, the "return-effect" "return-effect" of tv production has given the event an image of violence and of the "terror". The variety and non-conformity of the programs have asserted the freedom of communication. The tv screen will stay the unique place of the revolutionary bicentenary

Full textThis work can be through of as an attempt to improve our understanding of the place of history in the cultural universe of the twentieth century. The objective is to try and locate the evolution of the relationships that modern society holds with its past through televised representation. Historical memory is here a historical object which lights up the present. This focus on the subject firstly brings a reflexion on the field of the historical study of a given epoch. The representation of the French revolution becomes the "informer" ort the tracks of our collective behavior with regard to the past. This determining role of the revolution is explained by the innovatory role of the event, by its successive re-entry into the political life of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and by the diversity of its historical spotlights and artistic evocations. The symbiotic link of history and the media is thus one of the problems which this work sets out when the historian is more asked to understand current events. Can be authenticate images or participate in their creation without knowing about its production and in the end its effect on historical dialogue. How has history been passed on and anyway what history? What can a historian learn of television forms to understand what links his contempories to the past

Full textBetween 1869 and 2009 Napoleon Bonaparte was much commemorated through cultural events to celebrate the great periods of his life and his political or military career. Those commemorations took place within various national and international contexts. Under the reign of Napoleon the Third, there was a certain indifference, not to say a lot of reluctance to honor the founder of the dynasty, in a difficult context for the Emperor of the Second Empire. During the Third Republic that interest for Napoleon went from a restrained commitment to a very strong undeniably during the bicentenary of his birth in 1969. As for the other bicentenaries between 1993 and 2009, there were times of disinterest alternating with times of tension like that caused by the controversies in 2005, and also times of increased publishing. Napoleon can therefore be seen as a historical character, who cannot be easily commemorated, in a country where he still stands as a very important person in the cultural scene and that even two hundred years after he resigned
