Abstract:
The preparation of bicrystal specimens of high interfacial purity and accurately controlled mismatch of orientation between grains with a specific boundary orientation are critical for fundamental studies of the structure and properties of grain boundaries. A method was developed for routinely producing high-purity aluminum bicrystals of desired mismatch and boundary orientation. A strain annealing technique was used for making large single crystals. The orientation, structural perfection, and chemical purity of the seeds were characterized, then the seeds were joined by using an electron beam

Abstract:
Single crystals and bicrystals have been used to study pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion of Al and Al-Cu alloys in 0.5M NaCl solution. The critical pitting potential and pit density were examined as a function of a number of factors. These included crystallographic orientation; the bulk solution chemistry including CI- concentration, NO₃- addition and pH; the effect of Cu alloying; and the effects of homogenizing and aging on the alloy crystals. The susceptibility for pitting corrosion was found to depend on crystallographic orientation in pure Al with {111} showing maximum pitti

Abstract:
The mechanical properties of polycrystalline materials are governed by the underlying microstructure. In this context, in this dissertation, the role of grain boundaries on the mechanical response of two technologically important materials namely silicon and silicon carbide are examined. In particular, the dynamics of silicon carbide and silicon symmetric tilt bicrystals under shear load are characterized via molecular dynamics simulations. Cubic silicon carbide bicrystals with low-angle grain boundaries exhibit stick-slip behavior due to athermal climb of edge dislocations along the grain bou

The atomic structure of such grain boundaries, while crucial to their behaviour, are inaccessible to most experimental techniques as they are internal to the material.
