Abstract:
It presents: i) the adaptability of species, planted with two sylviculturals methods in Mangombe’s plantation and ii) compare the biodiversity of Mangombe’s forest to those of Bidou and Campo less disturbed. The adapted species with few mortality and best diameter increasement are : Gmelina arborea (Verbenaceae), Dipterocarpus alatus (Dipterocarpaceae) and Aucoumea klaineana (Burseraceae). The natural regeneration under canopy in plantation is heterogenic and diversed. The vegetation indices show a high diversity in all the sites : Shannon index, generic diversity and specific richness which is higher in Mangombe (38 families and 91 species), intermediary in Bidou (32 families and 88 species) and lower in Campo (29 families and 75 species). Zoochory concerns more than 71% of the species, and suggests a major role of animals in the regeneration process. The abondance of species familiar to non disturbed natural forest confirms the possibility for the natural regeneration to reconstitute in long term the biodiversity in plantation

Abstract:
. . Queer, changent de peau

Goupil, Valérie. "Le bijou sentimental en France : 1769-1839." Paris 1, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996PA010570.

Full text
Abstract:
In the first part, we relate the context for the appearance and evolution of the adjective "sentimental" ; then we make a definition of it, its meaning in the xviiith century and its consequences on an aesthetic level. In the second part, we put this notion in the relation and we enhance it with the objet and the jewellery. An object can become "sentimental" in the way that it shows a temporary or final parting in the same time as it tries to cast it out. When it is offered or exchanged, it reminds one of a loved and departed person through the emotions that it brings up. This recalling is all the more intense when the object is a jewel one wears - and above all when it is on the skin. Sentimental jewellery allows us to remain physically "in contact" with the man or woman that we desperately wish to keep close to. It is the mark, the promise, the materialization of the bound, of the persistence of the feeling of love or (and) friendship. It is the sign of a paradise that shines more by the absence than by the presence. In the third part, we linger on the "pieces", the "fragments" of the departed that, as it is said, make them "even more" present. The object made with or from those "precious remains" of the beloved, tightens the distance between the original and the copy. The aim is consequently not to deny this distance, but to recreate, from the help represented by the jewel sentimental, a perceptible image of the missing person. As a conclusion, the sentimental man when he is threatened, painfully confronted with alterity, losss, favours felling as an expression of unity so as to find it again. Death itself is only a momentary separation for the one who remains because he will soon meet the other again for an eternal union

Abstract:
The expression “contemporary jeweller”, first appeared in the 1970s, does not clearly describe the practice that it designates, and the jewelers operating in that field use a proliferating vocabulary to qualify themselves. The word “jeweler” does not seem significant enough: some, in France, add “plasticien” [artist] or “designer” to it, others replace it by “goldsmith” and self-identify as “orfèvre-plasticien” [goldsmith-artist]. Embedded as it is in my own contemporary jewelry practice, this dissertation seeks to clear up a few paradoxes: while some theoreticians looking at contemporary work conclude that “this jewelry is an art form” and that its authors are “artists”, contemporary jewelers themselves do not necessarily want to assert for their pieces the status of “art works”. Usually strongly attached to their workshop, they claim to “think with their hands” in order to create objects they still call “jewelry” but set themselves apart from “traditional jewelers” by designating their output as “contemporary”. Having realized that such a practice have never been described, I posited that an ethnographic study of a workshop would enable me to find out how jewelry becomes “contemporary”. I have based my research on the parallel analysis of two ethnographies: the ethnography of a colleague's workshop on one hand and an auto-ethnography on the other. Situated beyond the “art/craft” binary, this double perspective shows that contemporary jewelry makers compose their jewels from an assemblage of experiences, both social and emotional, by cultivating uncertainty and risk-taking, by playing with indetermination

Abstract:
Discipline in the government schools in South Africa has deteriorated during the past fifteen years. There are many different reasons for that. The aim of this study was to develop a uniform programme of discipline which can be used for application in all ten schools in the Bitou area. To reach this aim, the following procedures were followed: • A study has been done regarding the supporting role of the Bitou 10 foundation in the designing and management of a uniform discipline program. • A summary of the disciplinary problems in government schools has been given with possible reasons why discipline has deteriorated. • A study has also been made of various programs of discipline which have been used in various countries in the past. Certain aspects of those programmes have been used in this study to compile an effective programme of discipline for all the schools in the Bitou area. • Criteria for a positive discipline program have been put together. This study has been done in the Plettenberg Bay area. This area has ten schools which include primary- and high schools, single medium- and double medium schools, multi-cultural and mono-cultural schools and also some schools which have hostels. This study showed that not all schools in the Bitou area follow the same disciplinary programme. This study also makes recommendations on the possible implementing of such a uniform system of discipline. This study does not only show what the role is of the principal and teachers responsible for discipline, but also indicates the role and task of the parents and the community. Research on the application of discipline can never end because new ideas and methods will always be found to create an ideal programme in order to make the process more effective.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the function and representation of jewels in French narratives from the last three decades of the nineteenth century. Not only is this prose rich in gems and precious metals; its plot, vocabulary, and aesthetic are endowed with these luxurious substances and with their properties. In addition jewels represent objects of strong connotations, and thus they charge the narratives with their own aesthetic, social, economical or political meanings. Above all, the analyses of texts presented here reveal that through jewels, interrogations that are central in the social discourse of the time are raised, problematized, intertwined or transfigured. In accordance with a sociocriticism that takes into consideration socio-historical issues in its approach to literary text this study of the jewel in the fin-de-siècle novel shows that, being strong and complex signs, jewels condense the literary, aesthetic and social implications of the text, and constitute privileged objects prone to mediate authors with their society. More precisely, jewels in fin-de-siècle literature summarize tensions of the time: emblems of the secular aristocratic lineages of long ago, in a newly bourgeois world they are more accessible, common objects which can be sold and copied; albeit signs of the submission of the feminine body to a masculine authority they can also become a terrible weapon for freed and conquering female heroes; they embody a substance cherished by dreamers and craftsmen through which the fin-de-siècle text positions itself with regards to Zola’s hegemony and to other artistic practices of the time. Each of the three sections of the thesis (l’objet, le corps, la matière) explores one of these power struggles and is divided into two chapters presenting successively completing or competing points of view. This thesis ultimately leads to the identification of various aspects (rarity, duality nature / culture, etc.) by which gems become a favourite metaphor for authors of the end of the nineteenth century. Among these attributes, precious stones’ resistance – always in tension with the inexorable work of duration – leads to a better comprehension of the fin-de-siècle aesthetic and its equivocal, conflicting relations with the world and with time as it flies by.

Abstract:
This treatise investigates the role of Community DevelopmentWorkers, with reference to the Bitou Municipality. The treatise comprises five chapters. The concept of Community Development Programme is fairly new in South Africa; therefore, further research is needed on the subject. A literature review was done to establish the concept and the background of the CDWP. A questionnaire was developed in order to obtain primary data from a selected sample group. The data obtained from the questionnaire was statistically analysed and interpreted. The core findings from the analysed questionnaire indicated the following: (a) CDWs clearly understand their role and responsibility, but there is a need for roles and functions to be clearly defined, with detailed terms of reference, to ensure a common understanding with other stakeholders, e.g. Ward Committees, Councillors, Non-governmental organisations, Communitybased organisations, and members of the community. (b) living conditions in the wards improved following the introduction of the CDWP. (c) there is a good relationship between CDWs, Ward Committees and Ward Councillors, but there is also a perception that Ward Committees and Community Development Workers constantly clash or compete in the wards in which they serve. (d) CDWs should not be affiliated to the ruling or any political party. (e) CDWs are confused regarding who is responsible for their remuneration (the Municipality or the Provincial Department of Local Government).

Thesis, Paris 4, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA040104.

Abstract:
Most studies regarding 19th-century jewellery favour the study of its stylistic and formal aspects. As for its uses, they are most often eluded and the rare social and societal considerations, when they are tackled, remain anecdotal. Yet, jewellery plays a determining social role, especially in the expression of wealth but also in the process of identification and of belonging to a group. For this, fashion periodicals constitute a most precious support for study. They tell us about the very codified use women from the elite made of their jewellery, and implicitly of the place and role that was assigned to them in 19th century society. The fashion periodical is also a very interesting source to contextualise the jewel creation, which thus becomes a mirror of events. Jewellery appears as a reflection of various influences, all at once from the technical point of view, the choice of materials, the chosen style, the form or the symbolism of the worked designs. Through the descriptions of jewellery contained in fashion chronicles and engravings that accompany them, we shall retrace a history of forms by categorising the great trends recurring between 1820 and 1870 before dealing with those characterising one particular era. We shall also use advertisement notices in order to examine the relationships linking the different actors that participate in the making and marketing of jewellery with the fashion phenomena

Abstract:

Parsons, Clare. "Sketching the 'Sôtêria Tou Biou' : Plato and the art of measurement." Thesis, Durham University, 2007. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1320/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I aim to demonstrate that measurement is an important and dynamic theme though which Plato explores the nature of arete in a range of dialogues covering the early, middle and later periods of his work. In chapters 1-3, I will explore the origin of this theme in the Protagoras' metretike techne' - an art which involves the maximisation of pleasure in our lives through measurement. I suggest that Socrates presents the metretike techne as a sketch of the type of wisdom which would be sufficient for arete and which, as such, has the potential to be 'the salvation of our lives'. 2 He shows how the metretike techne can bring determinacy and accuracy to the decisions we have to make about how we should live, because it is founded upon an objective and quantifiable standard for a good life. In addition, through its foundation on hedonism, it offers an account of our motivation to act consistently upon our knowledge of what is right to do. I will argue that, long after the Protagoras, Plato remains committed to the metretike techne. While often regarded as an ad hominem device or as tongue-in-cheek, the idea of a metretike techne is, in fact, hugely important in shaping Plato's account of arete. In chapters 4-6I will trace the refinement of this sketch of arete through the Gorgias and Republic. Driving the process of refinement for Plato is the challenge of combining the practical strengths which he remains convinced that a metretike techne offers with his emerging account of a good and truly pleasant life as dependent upon order kosmos in the individual soul and in the state. From this process of refinement, as I will discuss in the final chapter, the basilikb techne, 3 the statesman's art, emerges in the Statesman as the basis of arete in the state. The basilike technd entails measurement of order in the state against the standard of 'due measure' to metrion . This art retains the key strengths of the original metretike techne, whilst responding to its weaknesses. So, in completing the portrait of the statesman, Socrates also completes a sketch of arete as measurement which he began in the Protagoras.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores issues of educational provision for people regarded by some as stateless, specifically the Bidoun in Kuwait, and how the Kuwaiti Government and others view this. The main research question is what can be learned from the situation in Kuwait about the interpretation of Human Rights Conventions regarding the provision of education for the children of Bidoun (stateless people)? The principal research methods applied in this study are a comprehensive literature review on statelessness and related issues and interviews with informed personnel in Kuwait. The findings are divided into two parts: the first illustrates a lack of knowledge among Kuwaiti officials concerning the International Conventions on rights for free education for every child. It considers how this lack of knowledge is intertwined with support for the primacy of domestic law and for the Government's educational policies in respect to the Bidoun, even when these violated these Conventions. Activists demonstrate more knowledge about these conventions and promote a policy of tolerance in respect to educating this group, specifically in state schools. The second part focuses on lessons for Kuwait from similar situations in comparable countries. Economic concerns lie behind marginalising this group since granting them citizenship would increase financial costs, especially in a Rentier state like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or the UAE. Xenophobia may belie the unwillingness to grant stateless people citizenship, especially if they originate from a minority religious denomination or a hostile country.

Abstract:
If the jewel of the nineteenth century abounds in many works, we must rethink its plot, its lexicon and its poetics. From an ontological perspective and thanks to a multidisciplinary exchange thus allowing an opening to processes of methodological sharing, this thesis shows how much the jewel of the nineteenth century is strongly connoted and possesses an aesthetic, social, geographical, political and cultural significance of its own. This study proves that jewellery, both as a polysemic sign and as ontology, crystallizes the anxieties and upheavals relating to its century. It makes it possible to define an aesthetic, a relationship to the world, to the passing of time. It is a key, a way of being in the world, a pole of understanding. So there is a creative interaction between man and his finery. Man creates the jewel and the jewel creates man in return. Thanks to the implementation of a new and original approach proposing to see the jewellery of the nineteenth century as an ontology, the jewel is then thought as a whole element to understand the man. Jewels are not there by chance, they convey hidden meanings, codes. They are the unchanging referent that this study proposes to make us discover

Abstract:
The present thesis is an attempt to the analysis of the ancient thought interpretations developed by Michel Foucault between the end of the Seventies and the beginning of the Eighties. The aim of this study is relating some main topics of the practices and ancient texts analysis by Foucault with the idea of criticism as well as the idea of philosophy as "critical diagnosis of the actuality", which he develops in his last works. In fact in the following chapters I intend to propose some hypotheses about how to link the idea of philosophy as critical diagnosis of the actuality with the greek and roman idea of "askesis" -- the oneself transformation process -- and with the idea of "parrhesia" -- the dangerous speech activity of truth-telling

Abstract:
Using a corpus of jewelry from the 1960’s to nowadays, analysed through the Theory of Mediation method, the thesis has three objectives. The first one aims at building an anthropology of jewelery through the detour of sociology, using the Instituant/Institué model (first part), which helps understanding the experimental nature of these ornaments, far away from the traditional investiture of the person. The second objective is to analyse these very specific jewels using the Fabriquant/Fabriqué model (second and third parts), as studying how the nature of these experiments is broken down is indeed too difficult to do in a traditional manner. The third objective is to show the unity of the research by highlighting a similarity with the mechanisms of contemporary arts (clothing, design, furniture, art), indicating a community of projects and therefore a global and widespread phenomenon (second and third parts). These socially unwearable jewels develop unlikely techniques, in line with the unlimited world of contemporary art

Abstract:
This particular PhD research project focuses on the representation of jewellery on “Fayum portraits” and mummy masks from Roman Egypt. Even though Roman mummy masks and the so called “Fayum portraits” have been the subject of numerous research in recent years, a detailed study on the individuals’ jewellery is still missing up to this date. This is particularly regrettable because females on these portraits are almost exclusively wearing Roman-type jewellery. A chronological order that includes a precise dating must be obtained by the female hairstyles that have been influenced by Roman fashion dispersed in the Roman Empire through representations in form of busts, coins and paintings of the Empresses and members of the imperial families. Consequently, this chronological order allows us to identify the various changes in the jewellery fashion throughout the imperial dynasties of the first three centuries A.D. A goal of the chronological classification of jewellery in the art of Roman Egypt is to help future researchers to date jewellery more precisely, in particular – which is quite common for jewellery - when their provenance is unknown or imprecise. The results will be complemented by representations of jewellery in art from other regions of the Empire but also by actual dated finds. Finally, all these factors will help to obtain a better understanding of Roman jewellery fashion, its distribution and even more which types were “à la mode” at what particular time

Abstract:
Thesis (M.M. (Security))--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, Graduate School of Public and Development Management, 2013.<br>Soon after the ANC acquired the leadership of this country there has been a series of service delivery protests in most of the municipalities. Several studies have sought to explain the causes of these protests and many have come to the conclusion that they are caused by the slow pace of delivering houses, electricity water and sanitation to the local communities. Most of the existing work has discussed the problem from the point of view of politicians and members of the community. To date, no research has elected to focus on the view of the employees of the municipalities to which the grievances are mostly directed. Using a qualitative research that surveyed municipal managers, ordinary employees as well as community members in Bitou Municipality, this study argues that poor governance, structural reasons, social reasons, systematic reasons are some of the causes of service delivery protests in the municipalities. The research has also uncovered a litany of reasons that contribute to service delivery protests and government practice which fuel support or hinder service delivery.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣海洋大學<br>海洋環境資訊系<br>106<br>Bitou Cape is a famous scenic spot in the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area of Taiwan. The sea surface around Bitou Cape occasionally shows smooth surface and rough surface, so that this special natural landscape always catches visitors' attention. The purpose of this study is to explore the causes of the sea surface roughness changes. The images of sea surface around Bitou Cape are taken by a digital camera. The sea state is also analyzed with the data from the Longdong Tidal station, Londong Buoy, and Bitoujiao weather station of the Central Weather Bureau to investigate the relationship between tide or wind and the sea surface roughness. According to two digital images with the same wind direction and the same sea surface roughness, one image with small wind is rougher than another image with big wind, and more white foam appears in the image with small wind. Thus, the rough sea surface around Bitou Cape is probably not caused by wind driving. Comparing digital images and the data of tidal height, it is found that tidal fluctuations coincide with the changes of sea surface roughness. When the difference of hourly value of tidal height increases, the sea surface roughness in the photograph is more obvious until the slack tide appears. The locations of smooth and rough sea surface are different which are caused by the tidal current. Therefore, the tidal current could be the main factor to affect the change of sea surface roughness around Bitou Cap sea area.

Abstract:
In the prelude to and aftermath of the plebiscite on 30 August 1999, in which 78.5% of East Timorese voters rejected autonomy within Indonesia and chose independence for their country, violent conflict raged throughout the country. This thesis concerns Bidau, which is an urban village located in Dili, the capital of East Timor. My central argument is that Bidau residents have been agents in their own recovery following the destruction of 1999. I stress that in seeking to understand what will assist with post-conflict recovery, we need to pay more attention to the social worlds of people affected by violence, rather than applying an individual trauma model. Accordingly, I investigate the various forms of suffering that residents experienced, including the fears of further violence, the different sicknesses, the grieving for deceased relatives and friends, the economic struggles, and the disruptions to life cycle rituals in Bidau. These diverse forms of suffering and their impacts became evident to me over twenty-six months of fieldwork in the period from 4 November 2000 to October 2003. In describing the diversity of the people who reside in the village, I distinguish three categories of residents – Portuguese Period Settlers, Indonesian Period Settlers and Post-ballot Residents – and also distinguish people from the Makassae ethnolinguistic group, who make up a quarter of the population, and span the three periods of settlement, arriving in Bidau from 1973 onwards. I explore the connections that enabled Bidau individuals and groups to find places of safety during the most violent months of 1999 and show how people who returned or moved to Bidau once order was restored relied on kin networks and other social affiliations to rebuild their lives. I argue that embeddedness in groups and guarantees of social support that Timorese customs offer facilitate and promote healing, as do some religious beliefs and practices. Participation in significant rituals, especially wedding and mortuary rites is central to the lives of Bidau residents and entails reciprocal obligations, especially between wife-givers and wife-takers. In my analysis of a delayed wedding and various mortuary rituals, I show the ability and determination of East Timorese to organise such rituals despite all they have suffered. These rituals expand social networks of support and have the potential to make and strengthen alliances. An exegesis of a lamentation performed for a recently deceased grandmother shows the complexities of the social and material obligations that East Timorese custom requires. By examining rituals in three settings – public space, the private space inside houses, and the intermediate space of verandas and gardens – I show the significance of the spatial dimensions of rituals and other practices and how these are closely related to the social processes of the household and the architectural space of the house. The reconstruction of the physical environment, especially repairs to residents’ private homes, was a critical part of the processes of recovery, as houses were needed not just for shelter, but also because they helped define ritual spaces and enabled householders to define permeable borders. Bidau residents, through their participation in rituals and other activities in shifting social spaces, created and recreated their dynamic and supportive social order.

In recent years, Yilan County's hot spring-themed travel itinerary has been well received by local tourists. Facing the opening of Suhua Improvement Engineering, it is expected to bring a huge crowd of tourists to Nanao Township. How to deal with it early has become one of the important issues. However, at present, there are few studies on the research on hot spring tourism in Nanao Township; therefore, how to improve the factors of ecotourism and develop the recreation benefits is the purpose of this study. The framework of this research is based on ecotourism and recreation benefits to design the questionnaires for in-depth interviews. Then, we apply NVivo coding and verbatim analysis to generate propositions from the interview manuscripts. The results show that the top five codes with the highest frequencies and coverage are: 1. Atayal culture 2. Natural environment characteristics 3. Enhance industrial development 4. Combine community and village 5. Hunting rattan archery weaving culture experience, therefore, the proposition 1 to the proposition 5 are sequentially derived. In addition, the proposition 6 is derived from the analysis of the nodes of ecotourism. The development of Bihou Hot Spring will not only become the marketing highlight of Nanao Township, but also promote economic development to enhance the competitiveness of the local Atayal people. Through the results of this study, it can be used as a reference direction for the public sector, the Bihou Hot Spa industry and future researchers.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣海洋大學<br>海洋環境與生態研究所<br>106<br>Sexual reproduction is among the most important biological phenomenon required for establishing coral populations. To date, most studies regarding coral sexual reproduction have focused on the environmental factors affecting coral gametogenesis and spawning. However, little studies have been performed on the intrinsic mechanisms underlying coral sexual reproduction. Sex steroids in vertebrates play fundamental roles in gametogenesis and spawning. Previous studies found that stony coral tissues contain sex steroids (e.g., 17beta-estradiol, testosterone). Interestingly, the concentration of 17beta-estradiol in the coral tissue elevated when the coral approached to the spawning month in the stony coral Euphyllia ancora. These findings suggest that sex steroids may be involved in the regulation of gametogenesis, oocyte maturation, and/or spawning in corals. However, the elevation in the concentration of 17beta-estradiol has only reported in E. ancora, it is still unclear that similar patterns can be observed in other corals. To get a better understanding of the function of steroids in the sexual reproduction, especially in germ cell development, of the stony corals, the present study investigated the relationship between gametogenesis and sex steroids using a stony coral Goniopora burgosi. G. burgosi colonies were collected at Pitouchiao near northern Taiwan at different timings over the periods during October 2016-December 2017. The germ cell development was investigated by immunohistochemical analysis with anti-Piwi (germ-cell marker) antibody. The sex steroids (17beta-estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone) in the tissue extract of G. burgosi were determined by UPLC-MS. We found that the germ development took approximately one year in both sexes. It started from August and proceeds until the next spawning periods, July or August. UPLC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of progesterone and testosterone in the most coral tissue that we examined. However, the concentration of these steroids in the coral tissues were basically very low throughout the year, and the distinct elevation in the levels of these steroids were not observed even in the corals that approached to the spawning month. Further studies were required to clarify the function of steroids in in germ cell development of the stony corals.

This study adopts descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, T-test, single-factor variation analysis, Pearson product-related correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis to recover 150 valid questionnaires. This study finds: 1. There were significant differences in participation motivation among different genders, marital status, educational level, submersible object and cumulative gas cylinder spree in the area of scuba diving in Bitou Cape. 2. There were significant differences in leisure benefits among the different genders, marital status, education level, submersible object and accumulated gas cylinders involved in scuba diving activities in Bitou Cape. 3. The research hypothesis that divers' motivation to participate has positive effect on leisure benefits is partially established. 4. The healthy fitness of participation motivation in scuba diving activities in Bitou Cape has positive effects on the physiological, psychological and social benefits of leisure benefits, but is not correlated with self-realization. 5.The achievement of scuba diving activities participating in motivation has a positive impact on the social benefits and self-realization of leisure benefits, but has no effect on physiological benefits and negative effects on psychological effects. 6.The social needs of scuba diving activities in Bitou Cape to participate in motivation have positive effects on all facet-physical, psychological, social and self-realization of leisure benefits. 7.The psychological needs of scuba diving activities involved in motivation have positive effects on physiological benefits, social benefits and self-realization, and there is no correlation between psychological effects. 8.The technical needs of scuba diving activities to participate in motivation have a positive impact on all facets of leisure benefits.
