Abstract:

With the rise of geo-social media, location is emerging as a particularly sensitive data point for big data and digital media research. To explore this area, we reflect on our ethics for a study in which we analyze data generated via an app that facilitates public sex among men who have sex with men. The ethical sensitivities around location are further heightened in the context of research into such digital sexual cultures. Public sexual cultures involving men who have sex with men operate both in spaces “meant” for public sex (e.g., gay saunas and dark rooms) and spaces “not meant” for public sex (e.g., shopping centers and public toilets). The app in question facilitates this activity. We developed a web scraper that carefully collected selected data from the app and that data were then analyzed to help identify ethical issues. We used a mixture of content analysis using Python scripts, geovisualisation software and manual qualitative coding techniques. Our findings, which are methodological rather than theoretical in nature, center on the ethics associated with generating, processing, presenting, archiving and deleting big data in a context where harassment, imprisonment, physical harm and even death occur. We find a tension in normal standards of ethical conduct where humans are involved in research. We found that location came to the fore as a key—though not the only—actor requiring attention when considering ethics in a big data context.

Abstract:

Sedative/hypnotic use and homophobic bullying have become a big mental health concern for gay and bisexual men. However, few studies have investigated the mediators and moderators of the association between them. The current study aimed to build a conceptual model to estimate the mediating effect of emotional symptoms and the moderating effect of family support on this association among gay and bisexual men in Taiwan. A total of 500 gay or bisexual men were recruited for the study. Their history of homophobic bullying, their experience of sedative/hypnotic use, their perceived family support, and their current emotional symptoms were evaluated using self-reporting questionnaires. A moderated mediation model was developed to test the mediating effect of emotional symptoms and the moderating effect of family support. A higher level of homophobic bullying was significantly associated with sedative/hypnotic use among gay and bisexual men and this was mediated by a higher severity of emotional symptoms. A moderating effect of family support was identified, wherein the mediating effect of emotional symptoms was weaker when there was a higher level of perceived family support, thus revealing the protective effect of family support. The significant impact of emotional symptoms and family support on the association between homophobic bullying and sedative/hypnotic use was identified. Timely interventions for emotional symptoms and the enhancement of family support are crucial for gay and bisexual men.

Abstract:

Following introductory remarks on how the terms “masculinities” and “men” have been used differentially in recent critical studies on men and masculinities (CSMM), the article reviews some key aspects of CSMM - past, present and future. The diverse influences on CSMM have included various feminisms, gay studies, anti-imperialism, civil rights, anti-racism, green and environmental movements, as well as LGBTIQ+ movements, Critical Race Studies, Globalization/Transnational Studies, and Intersectionality Studies. In the present period, the range of theoretical and political approaches and influences on studies continues to grow, with, for example, queer, post-, post post-, new materialist, posthumanist, and science and technology studies, making for some discontinuities with established masculinities theory. In many regions, there are now more women working explicitly and long-term in the area, even if that is itself not new. CSMM have also become more geographically widespread, more dispersed, more comparative, international, transnational, postcolonial, decolonializing, globally “Southern”, global, globalized and globalizing; this diversifying feature is transforming CSMM. Key areas for future research are identified, including the relations of men and masculinities to: first, ecology, environment and climate change; second, ICTs, social media, AI, robotics and big data; third, transnational/global, transnational institutions and processes; and, fourth, nationalism, racism, authoritarianism, neo-fascism and political masculinism. Together, these make for a “lurking doom”. At the same time, there is a whole range of wider theoretical, methodological, epistemological and ontological questions to be taken up in CSMM much more fully in the future.

Abstract:

Since 2007 all Grand Slam tournaments have offered equal prize money for male and female tennis players. Although men and women are paid equally in Grand Slams they still play a different number of best-of sets – men play best-of-five set matches while women play best-of-three set matches. Those two competing circumstances created a financial gap in prize money paid to women and men for the unit of effort in a tennis play – for a game. The present paper estimates this financial gap for 2016 Grand Slam tournaments. Moreover, it demonstrates the nominal magnitude of this gap and its effect on year-to-year increasing prize money that are paid to winners. The results showed that women on average obtained 60% more prize money for a game played than men in all four 2016 Grand Slams.

Abstract:

An effective Hamiltionian with level splitting of the collective spin states is derived for a spinor Bose condensate of trapped atoms with hyperfine spin f = 1 beyond the single-mode approximation. The splitting of these spin states arises from quantum polarization between the mf = +1 and mf = -1 spin channels, and is characterized by small magnetization exhibited by the trapped gas. For big ferromagnetic 87 Rb and antiferromagnetic 23 Na Bose gases, the splitting fraction in total energy increases as -N-1 and decreases as N-2 when the atom number N varies, with typical order of 10-6 and 10-4, respectively. In the case of small condensates, the splitting fraction increases as -N-2, with typical order of 10-5~10-6, both for 87 Rb and 23 Na atoms. In both cases of the big and small condensates, the splitting energy is analogous to the anisotropic energy of a magnet, being proportional to the square of the pseudo-magnetization.

Abstract:

The aim of this article is to find out if in the analyzed company there exists a pay discrimination between women and men. If so, how big it is and what impact it has on real salaries. In the analyzed company the survey was focused on the salaries´ differentiation of random sample of 30 women and 30 men working on the same or similar positions, enrolled in the same pay scales and working full time. The prerequisite for the distribution of salaries in the population was a normal distribution. The construction of two-sided confidence interval for estimating salary variation in the population was based on ꭓ2 distribution and give us a reply on the question at what interval the standard deviation of salaries in the population of all men and women in the company can be expected with 95% probability. For this purpose, there was used the estimate of variance of the population. Findings show a still occurring gender pay gap.

Zusammenfassung Im vorgelegten Beitrag wird eine kritische Haltung der theoretisch orientierten Archäologie gegenüber großen Objektsammlungen und deren Auswertungen beleuchtet, die der deutschsprachigen Archäologie unter dem Begriff „Massendinghaltung“ seit einer Tagung mit dem Titel „Massendinghaltung in der Archäologie“ vom 23.–25.5.2013 bekannt ist. Der kritischen bis ablehnenden Haltung gegenüber werden im Beitrag fünf Beispiele einer Datensammlung aus der Römischen Kaiserzeit gegenübergestellt, die nur aufgrund umfangreicher Materialkollektionen analysiert werden konnten. So sind es zunächst verkupferte Eisenobjekte, bei denen sich zu zwei bereits bekannten Gürteldosen noch eine Fibel A VII sowie ein kleiner Eimerberlock gesellen. Sie zeigen, dass Verkupfern auch germanischen Feinschmieden möglich war. Eine Aufnahme von versteinerten Seeigeln (Echiniten) zeigt, dass solche recht seltenen Fundobjekte bislang nicht bearbeitet wurden, da sie als wenig wertvoll erscheinen und der Rechercheaufwand für diese Objekte als zu hoch angesehen werden dürfte. Als drittes Beispiel wurden die bereits bearbeiteten Knopfhenkelgefäße ausgesucht. Mit Hilfe einer datenbankgestützten Aufnahme von mittlerweile mehr als 30.000 Grabinventaren sowie weiterer Literaturrecherchen kann das bisherige Fundbild überprüft, ergänzt und gegebenenfalls auch erweitert werden. Als viertes Beispiel werden die häufig vorkommenden Bernsteinfunde vorgestellt. Sieht man von Tempelmann-Mączyńskas Arbeit über Perlen ab, wurde bislang kein Versuch unternommen, diese Objektkategorie überregional zu bearbeiten. Durch ihre Arbeit hatte man bisher einen recht leidlichen Eindruck vom Vorkommen dieser Fundkategorie, insbesondere was Deutschland anging. Die wiederholt geäußerte Ansicht, Bernstein könnten in Brandbestattungen nicht vorkommen, weil sie mit verbrannt wären, stellt sich als Topos dar. Ein deutlicher Schwerpunkt im Elb-Saale-Gebiet zeigt hier eine Region auf, die entweder als Abnehmer früh in Erscheinung treten oder gar als Zwischenhändler für die Zeit ab dem 3. Jahrhundert infrage kommen. Zu guter Letzt sind mittlerweile Dank einer großen Anzahl an Siedlungs- und vor allem Gräberfeldpublikationen statistische Auswertungen zu Bevölkerungsgrößen und demographischen Veränderungen möglich, wie an den zwei Beispielen des östlichen Holsteins und der Altmark illustriert werden kann. Umfangreiche Publikationen von Datensammlungen sind mittlerweile allgegenwärtig in der Archäologie. Neben Museen, die Teile ihrer Sammlungen der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machen, sind auch zahlreiche spezialisierte Datenbanken, etwa zu Terra sigillaten oder Münzen, online zugänglich. In einigen Ländern, wie z. B. Norwegen, wird systematisch ein großer Teil der archäologischen Funde in einer Online-Datenbank zur weiteren Verwertung publiziert. Das automatisierte Auswerten großer unsortierter Datenmengen, das mit dem Begriff Big Data verbunden ist, wurde bereits mehrfach sinnvoll eingesetzt, wie das NEOMINE-Projekt oder das Projekt „ancient places“ der Alphabet Inc. zeigt. Eine pauschale Ablehnung großer Objekt- und Datensammlungen bleibt angesichts der Möglichkeiten und vor allem in den Naturwissenschaften bereits etablierten Methoden unverständlich und sollte zugunsten eines objektiveren und natürlich nicht unkritischen Blicks auf neue Forschungsmethoden überdacht werden.

Abstract:

Digitalisering är ett ämne som ständigt diskuteras och har på senare år utvecklats på många plan. Inom byggbranschen har BIM (Byggnadsinformationsmanagement) länge setts som en digital lösning vilken kan tänkas utveckla branschen inom flera områden, men trots det är den digitala utvecklingen inom branschen relativt låg vilket kan ge indikation på lägre produktivitet. Särskilt om man jämför med vad som faktiskt kan uppnås vid implementering av BIM fullt ut genom värdekedjan i projekt. Det finns en brist på tidigare studier kring varför det finns ett informationsgap mellan aktörer genom hela värdekedjan som delvis kan förklara denna låga produktivitet. Syftet med denna studie är därmed att undersöka vilka utmaningar som finns vid implementeringen av BIM i hela värdekedjan av projekt och vad utmaningarna skapar för informationsgap mellan design/konstruktion- och förvaltningssidan inom ett projekt. För att besvara syfte och frågeställningar har innovationsteori samt investeringsteori använts, där fokus främst riktats på innovationsteori. Med hjälp av teorierna kunde utmaningar med implementeringen av BIM och eventuella informationsgap som uppstår studeras djupare. I studien genomfördes åtta semistrukturerade intervjuer med fastighetsbolag, arkitekturbolag, konsultbolag och intresseorganisation. De existerande utmaningarna vid implementering av BIM hos olika aktörer, som kan ligga till grund för försämrad interoperabilitet, kan förklaras med att avsaknad av gemensamma branschstandarder, avsaknad av en central BIM-samordnare och generellt sett låg utbildningsnivå kring vad BIM är. Det noteras att ett informationsgap finns mellan aktörer som arbetar på förvaltningssidan kontra design/konstruktion och detta kan dels förklaras på grund av motvilja att anpassa sig till nya lösningar enligt innovationsteori, dels på grund av avsaknad av gemensamma branschstandarder. Att en aktör i projektskedet inte anser det lämpligt att använda BIM kan förklaras eftersom kostnaden hittills inte alltid understiger nyttan. Implementeringsfasen hos olika aktörer genom värdekedjan varierar och därmed kan branschen i vissa fall tolkas som trögflytande, bland annat på grund av frånvaro av öppna standarder och de språkbarriärer mellan program som kan uppstå vid användning av olika BIM-system. För att vidareutveckla arbetet kring ämnesfrågan behöver ytterligare studier genomföras kring proprietära rättigheter och problem vid anbudskalkylering, offentlig sektors påverkan på utveckling kring gemensamma branschstandarder, extern och intern BIM-samordning kopplat till effektivare projektledning och även hur gemensamma branschstandarder påverkar olika aktörer i hela värdekedjan av ett projekt.
Digitalization is constantly being discussed and has in recent years developed on many levels. Building information management, further described as BIM, has long been considered a digital solution in the construction and management industry. A solution that suitably would develop the industry in several areas. Despite this, digital development is relatively low which may indicate lower productivity than can be achieved. There is a lack of previous studies on why there is an information gap between stakeholders throughout the value chain that can partly explain low productivity and low effective stakeholder efficiency. The purpose of this study is thus to investigate the existing difficulties in the implementation of BIM in the entire value chain and what these difficulties lead to, such as information gaps between the design, construction and management side within a project. The findings of the study are explained with support of innovation theory and investment theory, with main focus on innovation theory. With support of the theories, difficulties with implementation of BIM for stakeholders and any information gaps that arise have been studied more deeply. This study conducted eight semi-structured interviews with real estate companies, architecture companies, one consulting company and one interest group. Existing challenges regarding implementation of BIM among different stakeholders, which may be the basis for impaired interoperability, can be explained in the absence of common industry standards, absence of a central BIM coordinator and generally low level of education about the subject BIM. It is noted that there is an information gap between stakeholders working on the administrative side versus design/construction and can be partly explained due to reluctance to adapt to new solutions according to innovation theory and partly due to the absence of common industry standards. The fact that the cost so far is not always less than the benefit of investing in BIM may explain why stakeholders in the project phase choose that BIM does not have to be appropriate to implement. The implementation phase through the value chain of a project varies a lot for different stakeholders and because of that the industry may in some cases be interpreted as conservative. This could be explained due to the language barriers that can arise when using different BIM systems and due to absence of open standards. To further develop understanding on the subject issue, studies need to be carried out on proprietary rights and problems in tender calculation estimates. Moreover, studies on public sector impact regarding development around common industry standards, external and internal BIM coordination linked to more effective project management and how common industry standards affect different stakeholders in the whole value chain of a project may develop understanding on the subject issue.

Abstract:

　　　1 January 2010 was a milestone for the survivors and victims of same-sex domestic violence in Hong Kong. After a hard fought legislative battle, the Domestic and Cohabitation Relationships Violence Ordinance (DCRVO) was extended to cover cohabitation relationships irrespective of sexual orientation. 　　　With the inclusion of same-sex cohabitants in the legislation, gay survivors are provided the same legal protection as different sex couples. It is believed that equality has been achieved for gay victims, in theory at least. Indeed, the topic of same-sex domestic violence seemed to vanish from the public sphere as soon as the Ordinance was enacted. Nevertheless, considering the cultural and social obstacles experienced by gay victims of domestic violence, e.g. social perception of homosexuality and the fear of being ‘outed’ by reporting the incidents, coupled with a lack of supplementary support services available to people with alternative sexual orientations, it is uncertain how effective this amendment will be to Hong Kong sexual minorities in practice. Therefore, the primary research question for this thesis is to what extent the DCRVO is effective in protecting in practice. 　　　This research question will be answered by a combination of qualitative and quantitative empirical research methods. This paper focuses on three areas particularly - the awareness amongst the gay community in Hong Kong of the legislation; the availability of same-sex domestic violence support services; and the subsequent complementary policies provided by the government. This study argues that without adequate complementary policies, the DCRVO will always remain to be a piece of work in progress, and not the ultimate solution for gay victims in Hong Kong.

Revisorn anlitas för att ge ett oberoende yttrande som ska säkerställa pålitligheten i företagensfinansiella rapporter. Denna tilltrosskapandande effekt kan endast uppnås om revisorn görsina bedömningar och fattar beslut utan att låta sig påverkas av andra personers viljor ellerönskningar. Att revisorn är oberoende är särskilt viktigt i de fall revisorernas arbete påverkarintressenters beslutsfattande. Diskussionen kring revisorns oberoende i samband medtillhandahållandet av fristående rådgivning har debatterats flitigt. Vissa menar att denfristående rådgivningen medför positiva effekter på revisionen, medan andra anser att denborde förbjudas då den utgör ett hot mot revisorns oberoende och påverkar förtroendet förbranschen. Genom införandet av revisionspaketet står revisionsbranschen inför nyaregleringar av oberoendet och den fristående rådgivningen. Denna uppsats ämnar fördjupadiskussionen och undersöka varför det kan upplevas som ett problem när en revisionsbyrå, irollen som oberoende kontrollorgan, erbjuder både fristående rådgivning och revision.Frågeställningen besvaras med hjälp av relevanta teorier, modeller och intervjuer medrevisorer, intressenter samt normgivande organ. Den fristående rådgivningen kan medföra attrevisorn inte uppfattas som oberoende och kan utmana förtroendet hos allmänheten. Vidarekan det upplevas som ett problem när den fristående rådgivningen sker på revisionsklienter.Medias skildring av debatten, att det verkar föreligga ett förväntningsgap samt en bristandetransparens kan även det vara bidragande orsaker till problematiken. Revisionspaketet kankomma att öka transparensen, minska förväntningsgapet samt stärka förtroendet för branschenoch kan således komma att minska problematiken med att ett oberoende kontrollorganerbjuder både fristående rådgivning och revision.

Abstract:

D’abord sur une échelle réduite puis sur une large échelle la contrebande du kpayo, essence et produits pétroliers occupent aujourd’hui un nombre de plus en plus grand de vendeurs, on estime que 100 000 personnes sont impliquées dans ce trafic du Nigeria au Bénin. Il revêt plusieurs aspects selon qu’il emprunte la route maritime, le fleuve ou la route. Ce transport génère un grand nombre de petits métiers que nous évoquons dans la thèse qu’il s’agisse d’apporter les bidons sur la plage, de transformer les scooters ou les camions. Plus que tout, cette activité suppose aussi un réseau souvent d’origine familiale, mais aussi des accointances avec du personnel des emplois régaliens de la République. Les recherches empiriques réalisées sur des territoires aussi variés et circonscrits que peuvent l’être une station-service, un village lacustre, un marché frontalier, un débarcadère, un entrepôt ont permis d’appréhender les conditions d’approvisionnement des contrebandiers, identifier les modalités d’acheminement des produits pétroliers vers le Bénin, saisir les stratégies de contournement des contrebandiers et les risques encourus tout au long de leur trajet, examiner les interactions entre les transporteurs et les forces de l’ordre à l’occasion du passage des barrières de contrôle, apprécier l’animation des marchés et enfin cerner le rôle des différents acteurs en présence. L’analyse des réseaux marchands, des parcours biographiques, des stratégies d’acteurs, des logiques d’accumulation et des rapports de l’économie informelle à la loi situe cette recherche au croisement de l’anthropologie économique, de la géographie du commerce, de la sociologie de la précarité, et de la sociologie politique
First of all on a small scale, then further along, on a much larger scale, the kpayo trade which means smuggling of gas and other oil products from Nigeria to Bénin, depend on almost 100 000 persons living on this sale activity. This trade might be quite different if gas transported by means of ships on the sea, by the river, or by scooters or trucks on the road. This kind of informal trade gives way to different kinds of odd jobs we mention in the PHD: bringing the jerrycans to the beach, reshaping scooters and trucks in a garage. Most of all this illicit activity needs some kind of a kinship network and political pull among the police and customs officers of the Republic. Empirical research has been done in different fields such as a gas station, a seaside village, a market on the country border, a landing stage, a warehouse, it led to the comprehension of the way smugglers are supplied. I was thus able to understand the process by which gas was transported from Nigeria to the Republic of Bénin, and see all the byways the smugglers are used to take, and the risks taken all along the journey. I examined the interaction process between the racketeers and the police when they passed a checkpoint; see how the markets were busy, and last managed to see how the the different roles of subjects interact. The racketeers networks analysis, life stories, different action strategies, the way they accumulate and the study of informal economy related to law contribute in this PhD to an essay in economic- anthropology with geographic standpoints, and a sociological analysis of precarious lives and Big Shots

Jeff foster arrived at Pier 56 in the summer of 1971 eager to get started. Although just fifteen, the Bellevue native already had extensive experience with wildlife. His father was head veterinarian at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo, and Foster himself was a skilled diver who often brought live fish and octopuses to the Seattle Marine Aquarium. When Don Goldsberry offered him a job with the seal trainers, Foster accepted, and after a quick introduction to his co-workers, he received his first assignment. “There’s a bum out back,” said one of the trainers. “Go get him out of there.” In the aquarium business, this was a serious matter. Over the years, vandals had thrown objects into tanks and even attacked captive animals. The teen made his way to the rear entrance, where he could hear dolphins and seals splashing in nearby pools. There he found a man sleeping beside a dumpster. “He’s laid out, he looks pretty big, and I give him my tough voice—my voice that’s still cracking,” laughed Foster, adding in a high-pitched squeal, “You gotta get out of here!” As he helped the derelict to his feet, Foster was stunned by his size. His hand was “like a baseball mitt,” Foster recalled. “He is like six foot six—huge, huge guy.” At first, the confused man seemed willing to leave, but as they approached the gate, he decided to take a swing at the teen. Foster managed to duck away, and he never forgot what happened next. Unknown to Foster, Goldsberry had followed behind to make sure the youngster was safe, and he now grabbed the flailing attacker before he could throw another punch. “The next thing I know this guy is just lifted up and thrown,” Foster recounted. “Don picks this guy up and tosses him easily from here to that wall.” Yet protection quickly gave way to rage. “He proceeded to kick his teeth in, kicked the shit out of him.” Fearing for the man’s life, Foster sprinted to the aquarium office, where he found a woman behind a desk, Goldsberry’s wife, Pat.

President John Kennedy’s suggestion to the UN General Assembly that the U.S. and the USSR embark on a joint expedition to the moon adumbrated the appearance of a highly successful American TV series: NBC’s Man from U.N.C.L.E (1964-68). What, one may ask, prompted the successful British director Guy Ritchie in 2015, when relations between Russia and the US were (and remain) at a nadir, to reprise/revamp the 1960s series in a film with the same title? To what extent does Ritchie’s film revise the earlier situation and the symbiosis between the two spies from the 1960s, even as he recreates that period? Does the film reflect the political tensions of the 1960s or of the 2010s–or both? These constitute some of the key questions that the chapter addresses in a comparative, politically contextualized analysis of The Man from U.N.C.L.E on the small and big screens.

Retirement from sport is a big decision for any athlete. Currently there are no evidence- or consensus-based guidelines for retirement from sport following multiple concussions. This gap is compounded by the lack of objective biomarkers to guide such decision-making. Current recommendations for retirement center around worrisome neurological findings on exam or brain imaging, prolonged recovery following concussion, low threshold for developing concussion, and shortened time intervals between concussions. Retirement from sport following one (or multiple) concussions should be based on multiple factors, including evidence of neurologic impairment, prolonged recovery, lower threshold for developing concussion, and personal/family concerns.

Gender inequality in technological sciences is a problem, which discussed louder than ever. The number of women and men working in the technology sector still struggles to reach equality. The same applies to technological faculties of universities, as women often undertake roles, which include administrative work mostly. This case provides an analysis of the situation at the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). In Lithuania, the distribution between men and women studying in the field of ICT is similar to the global trend. A big gap can be observed between boys and girls studying in the field of ICT and engineering. During the EQUAL-IST project implementation period, many positive structural changes implemented in the University not only in the faculty level but in the institutional level as well. The study illustrates the preparation and implementation stages of the KTU Gender Equality Plan.

Abstract:

The issue of student attrition is a complex one and has been an area of research interest among education researchers. Recently, education researchers are proposing to tap into the large amount of student data that are housed within the institution's data warehouse. This big student data of demography, learning journey, and their interactions with the institution presents a rich source of insights that can be discovered using advanced analytics. Consequently, education researchers have put forward predictive models, suggest the use of data triggers and dashboards aimed at improving student retention. This however has been met with limited success to date. From experience, there remains a gap between the analytics and the operationalization of the analytics. Consequently, this gap needs to be addressed to achieve student retention. The authors propose a dual framework to close this gap. While this framework was developed in the context of creating a solution for student attrition, it is sufficiently generalizable to analytical solutions for problems around student learning.

A common gender stereotype holds that women are less suitable to be scientists than men even though there is no evidence for this proposition. In Japan, a big gender gap in STEM subjects in high school translates into low numbers of female students studying science at university and low admission rates of females to national universities for which all applicants for all degrees are required to sit an exam in science. But role models do exist to encourage the younger generation, and some national universities are trying hard to encourage more female students to study science, technology, and mathematics. Interviews with three role models who took science degrees and went on to successful careers in academia, finance, and consumer electronics, show that barriers are considerable but that they can be overcome. An interview with the president of Nagoya University, Matsuo Seiichi, examines what the university is doing to try to close the gender gap.

This paper aims to assess the performance of the Externally Fired Gas Turbine cycle (EFGT) and a variant, ICEFGT (InterCooled Externally Fired Gas Turbine), and Biomass Integrated Gasification Intercooled Recuperated cycle (BIG/ICR), all using biomass as fuel – solid in the EFGT cases and gasified in the BIG/ICR cycle. The results are compared with the performance of a Biomass Integrated Gasification Gas Turbine (BIG/GT), as a representative of the most common use of biomass in gas turbine cycles. The energy and exergy analysis detailed here shows that if the challenges of the design and construction of the heat exchanger can be met, the externally fired cycles show great promise.

Abstract:

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion is raising new interest in using renewable biomass for energy. Modest-scale cogeneration systems using air-blown gasifiers coupled to aeroderivative gas turbines are expected to have high efficiencies and low unit capital costs, making them well-suited for use with biomass. Biomass-gasifier/gas-turbine (BIG/GT) technology is not commercial, but efforts aimed at near-term commercialization are ongoing worldwide. Estimated performance and cost and prospects for commercial development of two BIG/GT systems are described, one using solid biomass fuel (e.g. wood chips), the other using kraft black liquor. At an energy-efficient kraft pulp mill, a BIG/GT cogeneration system could produce over three times as much electricity as is typically produced today. The mill’s on-site energy needs could be met and a large surplus of electricity would be available for export. Using in addition currently unutilized forest residues for fuel, electricity production would be nearly five times today’s level. The total cost to produce the electricity in excess of on-site needs is estimated to be below 4 cents per kWh in most cases. At projected growth rates for kraft pulp production, the associated biomass residue fuels could support up to 100 GW of BIG/GT capacity at kraft pulp mills worldwide in 2020 (30 GW in the US). The excess electricity production worldwide in 2020 would be equivalent to 10% of today’s electricity production from fossil fuels.

Abstract:

Predictions of secondary flow in an axial turbine cascade have been made using three different turbulence models; mixing length, a one equation model and a k-epsilon/mixing length hybrid model. The results are compared with results from detailed measurements, not only by looking at mean flow velocities and total pressure loss, but also by assessing how well turbulence quantities are predicted. It is found that the turbulence model can have a big influence on the mean flow results, with the mixing length model giving generally the best mean flow. None of the models give good predictions of the turbulent shear stresses in the vortex region, although the k-epsilon model gives quite good turbulent kinetic energy values. The one equation model is the only one to contain a transition criterion. The importance of such a criterion is illustrated, but the present one needs development to give reliable predictions in the complex flow within a blade passage.

Abstract:

This study forms part of an ongoing program to investigate the feasibility of substituting a bio-oil for gas-oil in gas turbine applications. In this paper, the influence of the change of fluid properties on spray characteristics is presented and analyzed. It was not feasible to characterize the spray at full-scale operating conditions, and so a scaling methodology was adopted using published correlations. The study was conducted in three stages; a scaled nozzle was selected utilizing a published correlation to ensure the spray characteristics match the critical characteristics of the full-scale nozzle. The scaled nozzle was then characterized with a gas-oil as a benchmark for comparison with the bio-oil tests. Finally bio-oil tests were conducted at elevated fuel preheat temperatures and the spray characteristics compared to the benchmark case. The objective of the program was to provide an insight into the effect of fuel preheat on spray characteristics. The results of this program helped determine scaled operating conditions for a subsequent atmospheric combustion program, not presented in this paper. The spray characterization was conducted in the atmospheric spray rig (ASR) located at Cardiff University’s GTRC, at Port Talbot, UK. The experiments presented were conducted using bio-oil at elevated fuel preheat temperatures. The spray structure and mean droplet sizes are measured for a bio-oil at various initial pre-heat temperatures and compared with the benchmark gas-oil case. Operating conditions were chosen to maintain an equivalent thermal load of approximately 1.5 MW. Good quality PDA data were recorded for all cases and demonstrated that primary spray characteristics for bio-oil could be optimized and matched to those of gas-oil utilizing the same fuel delivery system. This was achieved by implementing a fuel pre-heat of 80 °C, thereby changing the delivery conditions of the bio-oil.

Abstract A large gas field with carbonate formations was discovered about 200 km (kilometers) offshore, in water depths of 108 m (meters) below mean sea level. Flow analysis and reservoir depletion studies by the Operator show 7" tubing is required to provide high production rates of about 80 to 120 million Standard Cubic Feet per day (mmscfd) per well as the optimum production and depletion strategy for the field. The field presents significant challenges to well construction and completion. These challenges were considered in the design stage to optimise well completion design and operations. This paper describes the approach and methods used to overcome the challenges in the design and execution stage to optimise the completion design and to manage challenges during construction of the well including: –Due to loss of circulation in the fractured gas carbonate reservoirs, the well will be drilled with Pressurised Mud Cap Drilling (PMCD), a form of Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD). Thus, the design needs to provide for installing the well completion in this condition–The wells required heavy mud weight for drilling and thus, heavy brine weights for well completion. Challenges to avoid or minimise the loss of high cost heavy brine were considered–High reservoir temperatures of about 325 deg. F (degrees Fahrenheit) which lead to challenges of ensuring equipment will continue to work in high temperature environments, high loads / stresses on completion & casing during production, and Wellhead & Christmas Tree & Flowline movement / growth.–Presence of sour gas and CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) which require optimising metallurgy of tubulars and downhole equipment, considering corrosion and cost requirements–Understanding loads / stresses on the tubing and casings with high flowrates and high flowing temperatures–Concerns with formation collapse during production–Corrosion studies to optimise material selection and ensuring well integrity for at least twenty (20) years’ field life–Manage hydrates and scaling while carrying out well completion, well clean and well test operations and during the field life–Acceptable seals, barriers and completion equipment to manage high pressure gas–Wellhead and Christmas Tree that can take the high temperature and sour gas content–Well clean-up and testing after completion in conjunction with drilling operations–Cost and time optimisation to maximize returns on investment for the project. Well completion engineering studies were carried out for each challenge or consideration. Experiences and lessons from similar gas fields were also considered. Corrosion laboratory analysis was carried out to optimise the corrosion resistant alloy for the completion tubular and completion equipment. For each solution to the challenge, cost and time considerations were reviewed and studied to optimise the design, cost, integrity and safety of the wells and operations. This paper describes the approaches and methods taken by the Operator to optimise the Big Bore Gas Well Completion Design including some lessons for improvement after successfully drilling, completing, clean-up and testing of the first well with this completion design.

Abstract:

CO2 bubble behavior in the anode flow field of a transparent Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) was investigated visually. The DMFC consisted of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with an active area of 4.0×4.0 cm2, two transparent enclosures made of Lucite material, and two bipolar plates made of 316 stainless steel plate, in which a single 2.0×2.0 mm2 serpentine channel having a total length of 420 mm was formed. An image recording system was employed to capture images of the two-phase flow behavior in the anode flow field. It is found that at low current densities, small discrete bubbles appeared in the anode flow field. At moderate current densities, a number of gas slugs formed in addition to small discrete bubbles. At high current densities, the flow field was predominated by rather long gas slugs. The effects of methanol solution flow rate, cell operating temperature, and methanol concentration on the CO2 behavior and the cell performance have also been investigated. Furthermore, for the present flow field consisting of a single serpentine channel, the phenomenon of big CO2 gas slugs blocking the channel was never found for all the test conditions in this work.
