Abstract:
AbstractThe Big Man has attracted considerable attention from social scientists, both as an explanatory force as well as a phenomenon to be explained. But the concept has become unmoored from its original meaning. Once used to refer to an apex figure within a patrimonial regime, today Big Men are often described as dictators or thieves. I show this using an original dataset covering discussions of Big Men in leading African Studies journals since 1980. I find that authors, especially political scientists, overemphasise theft and underemphasise accountability of Big Men. Then, drawing on my research with Ghanaian local politicians, I show how Big Men are constantly under pressure from their supporters. The paper concludes with a modest call to put the Big Man back in his place as powerful but also empowered, and thus indebted, to those beneath him.

Abstract:
AbstractThe issue of whether elites in societies with developing socioeconomic complexity emerge as a functional response to the needs of the community or emerge in response to opportunistic possibilities of self-aggrandizement is of critical importance to an understanding of the emergence of complex hierarchical societies. Existing ethnographies do not provide adequate observations to enable the competing models to be tested. Original fieldwork was therefore conducted in the Maya area, focusing on communities that had been extremely isolated in the earlier part of this century and that had experienced crises in which elites could be expected to materially aid the community if the primary reason for their existence was a “functional” one. We interviewed a wide range of older individuals representing different statuses in formerly isolated traditional communities. The results are unequivocal. Elites, or incipient elites, provided no aid to their communities in times of crisis other than actions that were designed to enhance the advantages of the elites. We argue that the Maya cargo system constitutes a special case of the broader category of competitive feasting systems found among many ranked societies throughout the world, and that the competitive feast is the main mechanism by which ambitious individuals acquire disproportionate goods, influence, and power.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of ”big data”, understood as the collection and processing of large data sets, in order to extract from them new knowledge, develops independently of the will of individuals and societies. The driving force behind this development is, on the one hand, rapid technological progress in the field of IT, and on the other the desire of many organizations to gain access to the knowledge accumulated in more and more electronic databases of Internet users, facebook, or twitter. The fact that the challenge is this phenomenon for man and for the statistics, the methodology can in these conditions prove less adequate, treats article. The author tries to argue that in case of protection of individuals and society, devoid of attribute privacy and anonymity, technological progress raises previously unknown threats. As statisticians analytical work hardly keep up with the possibilities offered by ”big data”, as well as the protection of human rights is merely a belated response to the dynamic world of electronic data.

Abstract:
Economic activity leads to the formation of natural and man-made systems, composed of man-made structures and natural components geosphere shells, exposed and developed in time and space as a whole. A wide variety of research methods and directions of development of the territories occupied by the natural and man-made systems are known. Common drawbacks of the known methods are the high cost, the local technical result, satisfaction with departmental interests. A complex system of research and assessment of the condition under uncertainty structure, composition and origin of formation will solve development of MMS with least costs. In this regard the comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of MMS with the establishment of the state of its corresponding allocation of life-cycle stages and development directions and methods of recovery and development of the target area seems to be relevant.

Abstract:
The article presents a literary review of scientific works related to the topic of the role of dogs in human life. The union of man and dog, as scientists report, dates back to ancient times, probably 14000 to 16000 years ago. In modern conditions, dogs occupy one of the main places next to people in almost all spheres of life - from protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens to sports with the use of dogs, as well as non-standard methods of treatment with the active participation of dogs. Dogs were the first animals domesticated by man. In this regard, they managed to overtake cows, sheep and goats. Of course, dogs were great guards and helpers during the hunt, but much more important was that you could communicate with them. They were devoted to their master and understood him better than other animals. A dog's ability to track prey and warn of danger was enough for primitive man. It freed a person from the fear of the unknown. It is difficult to overestimate the role of dogs in human life, because they perform many functions, in particular, they are actively used for hunting, as shepherds, in the work of the police and the military, in everyday life for people with disabilities, and dog therapy is also widely distributed, that is, work with injured people due to certain circumstances.

This is a description of a middle aged man who had a large head hidden below his hair that was also unknown to his family until one day he was taken to the hospital after a fall in the bathroom and a subsequent loss of consciousness. He remained in a comatose state for several days before gradually recovering, which coincided with a recovery of motor and cognitive skills. A computerized tomography scan revealed a surprising finding, that this man had less brain tissue than what is commonly found in adult humans. The findings and its clinical relevance has been discussed in this case study.
