Abstract:
Abstract:In the world of Nigerian beauty pageants, the bikini remains a fraught embodied symbol and aesthetic practice. Pageant affiliates, critics, and fans alike strongly debate the question of whether to include bikinis in these events. This article draws primarily from nearly a year of ethnographic observations of two Nigerian national beauty contests in 2009-2010 to show how various stakeholders used personal, domestic, and international frames about women’s bodies, and the bikini in particular, to bolster respectability. Through embodied respectability, women’s figurative and literal bodies were used to strategically situate propriety, social acceptance, and reputability for the self and the nation.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines a range of mid-twentieth-century American fashions, particularly women’s intimate wear, that went by the name of “bikini.” In doing so, it identifies the bikini as an overt but unremarkable incident of racial and colonial violence. Treating the nuclear Pacific as conspicuously incidental in mainstream atomic culture enables new insights on the visual interplay between white femininity and primitive sexuality—an interplay that, the author argues, was integral to establishing domestic virtue and modern living as atomic age touchstones of “peace.” To elaborate on this argument, this article tracks the bikini’s achievement of propriety within a broader fashion revolution spurred by the use of high-tech fibers in swim, sleep, and support garments. It shows how an atomic ideal of “nature” arose from an imperial desire for security in the face of extreme risk—both the global risk of nuclear war and the domestic risk of sexual promiscuity.

Abstract:
In the mid-1940s, Bikini Islanders were resettled to make way for the use by the United States of Bikini atoll as a nuclear weapons testing site. Although the relocation to another atoll was with the Bikinians’ ostensible consent, it was in truth a forced migration. The Bikinian resettlement is a significant case study on environmental migration in that it produced longstanding losses (cultural, material, and spiritual) and deep frustrations, the effects of which last up to today. How inadequate preparation, poorly conceived compensation, and the failure to understand the Bikinians’ deep attachment and connection to their island of origin produced profound irritations through the generations. The paper concludes that resettlement is not only about relocating to a new place, but about making such relocation sustainable. Both international and national law have a role to play in protecting indigenous peoples’ collective rights over their land, culture, and resources. If island communities are to be resettled at all due to unavoidable environmental conditions, policy and legal frameworks should minimize, if not avoid, expected material and cultural losses. Bikini’s experience continues to provide important lessons for environmental and climate change-induced migrations in the world today.

Abstract:
Famous for having been the first Spanish film to feature the Franco-banned bikinis, Bahía de Palma/Palma Bay (Bosch 1962) is generally seen as a frivolous footnote in the history of Spanish cinema, but it is also a pioneering aperturista film, that deserves closer examination as the blue print for late Francoist cultural productions of the 1960s and beyond. This article argues that Bahía de Palma is a veiled allegorical representation of the social and political contradictions that characterized Spain’s reintegration into the international world order after the dark and disastrous period of international isolation during the 1940s and early 1950s.

Abstract:
The study examines how the TFM Girls Instagram account, along with its followers, shapes and maintains dominant discourses of masculinity. Mixed-method analyses revealed that women were depicted more in bikinis, posed in overtly sexually suggestive poses, excluded the women’s eyes and faces, and included predominately White, fit, big-breasted women. There was a positive correlation between the number of likes/comments with breast size. There were also instances of misogyny and objectification manifested in the men’s comments attached to the photographs. The results highlight Instagram as a digital extension of fraternal social spaces. TFM Girls reinforces hegemonic masculinity on a macro-level by allowing virtual linkages among fraternity members across the United States and by fostering a national online frat house ripe with misogyny and objectification.

Abstract:
Women in bikinis posing on a beach, heart attacks and snoring. What’s the connection? Well, to most of us none. Yet one Turkish television news report on 1 February 2000 deemed it appropriate to illustrate a serious story on scientific research into the link between heart attacks and snoring in women with footage of scantily clad women posing on a beach! It is stories like these that have come under the microscope in three international media monitoring projects over the last 10 years. When the first Global Media Monitoring Project (or GMMP as it has come to be known) was conducted in 1995, few of those involved could have imagined that it would develop in the way that it went on to do. Ten years later, with the third such project now complete, the enormous significance of this international initiative is clear. These three projects constitute the most extensive global research of gender in news media ever undertaken and as such they provide an enlightening example of the importance of media monitoring as a tool for change.

Abstract:
The paper sets out to examine the Lithuanian loanwords whose morphological adaptation so far has not been complete; their inflection still poses quite a few problems, e.g. avokado, ateljė etc. The investigation focuses on new loanwords, e.g. indigas, ekstazis, sušis. It also includes some older loanwords, e.g. alibi, solfedžio; in actual usage they fluctuate between fully inflected and uninflected forms.New loanwords refer to words which came into actual Lithuanian usage after the restoration of Lithuania's independence. The tendencies of inflecting loanwords in contemporary Lithuanian have been investigated on the basis of a survey. The results of the survey suggest that some loanwords with unstressed endings are mostly used in their inflected forms; they have been given preference by ca 89.89 per cent of the respondents. Other loanwords (e.g. gospelas, spagečiai, bikinis) are equally frequent in their inflected and uninflected forms. The third group of loanwords (e.g. alibi, bingo, chaki, ledi, maestro) are mostly used in their uninflected forms; they have been chosen by 86.89 per cent of the respondents. The results of the survey have shown that in actual usage uninflected loanwords with the stressed ending -ė prevail (e.g. atašė, dekoltė, esė, turnė, želė); they have been given preference by 88.82 per cent of the respondents. However, in contemporary Lithuanian all of these loanwords have morphologically adapted variants.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite recreational mountain-biking’s growing popularity worldwide, the literature on mortality in this leisure sporting activity is scarce. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of fatal accidents as well as resulting dead victims during recreational mountain-biking in the Austrian Alps over the past 16 years. For this purpose, a retrospective study based on Austrian institutional documentation from 2006 to 2021 was conducted. In total, 97 fatalities (1 woman) with a mean age of 55.6 ± 13.9 years were recorded by the Austrian Alpine Police. Of those, 54.6% died due to a non-traumatic (mostly cardio-vascular) and 41.2% due to a traumatic event. Mountain-bikers fatally accidented for non-traumatic reasons frequently belonged to older age classes (p = 0.05) and mostly (73.6%) died during the ascent, whereas traumatic events mainly (70.0%) happened during the descent (p < 0.001). Throughout the examined period, the absolute number of fatalities slightly increased, whereas the mortality index (proportion of deaths/accidented victims) did not (mean value: 1.34 ± 0.56%). Factors such as male sex in general, above average age and uphill riding for non-traumatic accidents, as well as downhill riding for traumatic events, seem to be associated with fatalities during recreational mountain-biking in the Austrian Alps. These results should be considered for future preventive strategies in recreational mountain-biking.

Abstract:
We report on measurements of external gamma radiation on 9 islands in 4 atolls in the northern Marshall Islands, all of which were affected by the US nuclear testing program from 1946 to 1958 (Enjebi, Ikuren, and Japtan in Enewetak Atoll; Bikini and Enyu in Bikini Atoll; Naen in Rongelap Atoll; and Aon, Elluk, and Utirik in Utirik Atoll). We also report americium-241, cesium-137, plutonium-238, and plutonium-239,240 activity concentrations in the soil samples for 11 islands in 4 northern atolls (Enewetak, Japtan, Medren, and Runit in Enewetak Atoll; Bikini and Enyu in Bikini Atoll; Naen and Rongelap in Rongelap Atoll; and Aon, Elluk, and Utirik in Utirik Atoll) and from Majuro Island, Majuro Atoll in the southern Marshall Islands. Our results show low external gamma radiation levels on some islands in the Enewetak Atoll and Utirik Atoll, and elevated levels on Enjebi Island in the Enewetak Atoll, on Bikini Atoll, and on Naen Island in the Rongelap Atoll. We perform ordinary kriging on external gamma radiation measurements to provide interpolated maps. We find that radionuclides are absent from all Majuro soil samples, and that they are present at highest activity concentrations in samples from Runit and Enjebi islands (Enewetak Atoll), Bikini Island (Bikini Atoll), and Naen Island (Rongelap Atoll). We contextualize all results by making comparisons between islands and to various standards, as well as to regions of the world affected by nuclear accidents. We also discuss implications for informed decision-making by the Marshallese and local atoll governments and their people on issues pertaining to island resettlement.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction The direct anterior approach for total hip replacements has reported advantages of improved early function and muscle preservation. In an effort to improve healing and cosmesis, a change in the orientation of the incision has been proposed. Traditionally, the skin incision is in-line with the tensor fasciae latae muscle belly. The bikini incision is orthogonal to this orientation. The hypothesis was that muscle damage would be increased by using the bikini incision. Methods A traditional or bikini incision was performed on 18 cadaveric hips. On each of the 9 specimens, the traditional incision was performed on 1 side, and a bikini incision on the contralateral hip, with an even distribution of right or left side. Blinded anatomists performed the hip dissections, and assessed for muscle damage as well as for damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Results No difference in muscle damage was identified in the tensor fasciae latae between muscle groups. Muscle damage was very minimal to the gluteus medius and minimus. Damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve occurred equally for both the bikini and traditional skin incisions. Conclusions The bikini incision for the direct anterior approach to the hip can be performed safely, with no increase in muscle damage or damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve compared to the traditional incision.

Abstract:
Total hip arthroplasty is widely spread in all over the world medical practice. Different approaches are used for that procedure. Objective. To analyze the advantages and disadvantages of` «Bikini» approachand compare them to the Harding approach in patients after total hip arthroplasty. Methods. Тhe results of treatment of 108 patients were retrospectively analyzed: 41 patients were operated with «Bikini» approach, 67 — with Harding approach. Total hip implant with ceramic-on-ceramic, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene-on-ceramic, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene-onmetal movement pair were used, also were used both cemented and cementless types of fixation. Results were evaluated on 14 day and 3 months after the surgery by Harris scale. Results. 14-day of followup the average Harris score value in patients operated with Harding approach were 74.87 points, in patients operated with «Bikini» approach — 80,55 points, on the 3rd month of follow-up period the Harris score was 78.24 and 83.9 respectively. Conclusions. Both evaluated approaches have their own advantages and disadvantages, instruments and surgeon skills requirements. Proper utilization of the «Bikini» and Harding approaches provides good functionalresults in early and late terms. «Bikini» approach requires a larger volume of preoperative preparation. The absence of fascia lata andperiarticular muscles injury due to the «Bikini» approach usage allows reducing of narcotic analgesics prescriptions, intraoperative blood loss and duration of walking with crutches. Good cosmetical scars effects are achieved by the parallelism of skin incision relatively to Langer’s lines. In the early postoperative period the better functional results were marked, early rehabilitation and mild pain syndrome allow to reduce hospital length of stay. The technicalcomplexity of the «Bikini» approach requires operations number more than 30 per year.

Abstract:
Introduction: The direct anterior approach (DAA) for hip arthroplasty has gained popularity in recent years with numerous articles suggesting that short-term outcomes are advantageous over alternative approaches. The ‘bikini’ inguinal crease line incision is a novel variant of the DAA, which reduces the scar. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess functional and general health outcomes and complications of the two different surgical incisions used in DAA total hip arthroplasty (i.e. ‘bikini’ and longitudinal incisions). Results: We found no statistical difference between the novel bikini incision and the traditional DAA hip arthroplasty. Conclusion: This approach offers a cosmetically improved scar with no compromise in outcomes.

Abstract:
Dinar Candy expressed her feeling to PPKM by wearing bikini in the roadside which caused her be stipulated as the suspect of phornography. Dinar Candy’s case brought to the thoughts on the limitation of pornography meaning and the determination on freedom of expression in action of wearing bikini. The research is conducted through a qualitative approach using secondary data. The results show, first: phornograph is limited by ‘subjective reason’ such as if the phornography is aimed for personal interest, then the action is not phornography. The other is ‘action-room limitation’ in which an action can be formulated as phornography if the standard and characteristic in the room where the action is done consideres that the action is obscene or aims to sexual exploitation. The room refers to specific place such as beach, roadside, hotel, or other specific places, not wide social room. Second: If someone’s feeling is expressed by wearing bikini in a room which based on its decency standard allows to wear bikini, then the action can be determined as freedom of expression. In contrary, in a room where bikini is considered against morality, or it is spread to public, then such action is againsting the phornogrphy law.How to cite item: Donandi S, S. (2022). Abstract:
Women’s bodybuilding has attracted attention from gender researchers. However, increasingly popular fitness shows that feature different competitive tracks—bikini and figure—have garnered very limited scholarly consideration. This study draws on interview data from twenty bikini and figure competitors as well as ethnographic research conducted at several prominent bodybuilding shows in Texas with fitness competition tracks. Our investigation provides a comparative analysis of women’s participation in bikini versus figure fitness competitions as an embodied gender practice. Participation in this relatively new sport underscores the interconnections between gender and variegated forms of embodiment that we call athletic, aesthetic, erotic, and everyday bodies. Pre-competition regimens pose challenges for women’s management of their bodies due to dietary deprivation, rigorous workouts, and the specter of track-specific judging criteria. Pre-competition strains are often evident in primary relationships as women’s bodies are prepared for aesthetic presentation in a way that, for bikini and especially figure competitors, can undermine physical functionality and social capabilities. Competitions themselves reveal relationships marked by a mix of camaraderie and hierarchy among competitors, with those in the figure track often viewed as more “serious” athletes but less conventionally “feminine” than their bikini counterparts. Post-competition, women often struggle to accept the return of their “normal” everyday body. This study reveals the agency of women and their bodies in the context of a fast-growing sport while considering the broader social implications of fitness competitions given their tracking of women’s bodies.

Abstract:
We report measurements of background gamma radiation levels on six islands in the northern Marshall Islands (Enewetak, Medren, and Runit onEnewetak Atoll; Bikini and Nam on Bikini Atoll; and Rongelap on Rongelap Atoll). Measurable excess radiation could be expected from the decay of 137Cs produced by the US nuclear testing program there from 1946 to 1958. These recordings are of relevance to safety of human habitation and resettlement. We find low levels of gamma radiation for the settled island of Enewetak [mean = 7.6 millirem/year (mrem/y) = 0.076 millisievert/year (mSv/y)], larger levels of gamma radiation for the island of Rongelap (mean = 19.8 mrem/y = 0.198 mSv/y), and relatively high gamma radiation on the island of Bikini (mean = 184 mrem/y = 1.84 mSv/y). Distributions of gamma radiation levels are provided, and hot spots are discussed. We provide interpolated maps for four islands (Enewetak, Medren, Bikini, and Rongelap), and make comparisons to control measurements performed on the island of Majuro in the southern Marshall Islands, measurements made in Central Park in New York City, and the standard agreed upon by the United States and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) governments (100 mrem/y = 1 mSv/y). External gamma radiation levels on Bikini Island significantly exceed this standard (P = <<0.01), and external gamma radiation levels on the other islands are below the standard. To determine conclusively whether these islands are safe for habitation, radiation exposure through additional pathways such as food ingestion must be considered.

Abstract:
Aims The classical longitudinal incision used for the direct anterior approach (DAA) to the hip does not follow the tension lines of the skin and can lead to impaired wound healing and poor cosmesis. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the satisfaction with the scar, and functional and radiographic outcomes comparing the classic longitudinal incision with a modified skin crease ‘bikini’ when the DAA is used for total hip arthroplasty (THA). Patients and Methods A total of 964 patients (51% female; 59% longitudinal, 41% ‘bikini’) completed a follow-up questionnaire between two and four years postoperatively, including the Oxford Hip Score (OHS), the University of North Carolina ‘4P’ scar scale (UNC4P) and two items for assessing the aesthetic appearance of the scar and symptoms of numbness. The positioning of the components, rates of heterotopic ossification (HO) and rates of revision were assessed. Results The mean OHS was similar in both groups (p = 0.41). The mean UNC4P total score was slightly better (p = 0.01) and the proportion of patients who were very satisfied with the cosmetic aspects of the scar was higher in the ‘bikini’ group (p < 0.001). The proportion of patients reporting numbness in the scar was higher in the longitudinal group (14.5% vs 7.5%, respectively, p < 0.001). The abduction angle of the acetabular component, the position of the stem and rates of HO did not differ between the groups. There were no differences in the revision rates of both groups, being 2.3% in the longitudinal and 1.5% in the ‘bikini’ group (p = 0.911). Conclusion We found that a short oblique ‘bikini’ skin crease incision is safe when used for the DAA at THA, without compromising the positioning of the components or increasing the rate of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve dysaesthesia. Although it leads to a superior scar satisfaction, as it is less extensile, it should be used after having gained experience with the classic longitudinal incision. Abstract:
Background: Robotic-assisted hysterectomy (RAH) is a widely accepted minimally invasive approach for uterus removal. However, as RAH is typically performed in the umbilical region, it usually results in scars in cosmetically suboptimal locations. This is the first case of RAH with cervicosacropexy performed below the bikini line, using the new Dexter robotic system™. Objectives: The aim of this article is to show the surgical steps of the first RAH with cervicosacropexy performed below the bikini line with the new Dexter robotic system™ (Distalmotion), and furthermore assess the feasibility of this approach using this robotic platform. Materials and methods: A 43-year-old woman with uterine adenomyosis and recurrent uterine prolapse underwent a robotic-assisted subtotal hysterectomy with cervicosacropexy, performed below the bikini line, using the Dexter robotic system™, at the Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein (UKHS) in Kiel, Germany. Main outcome measures: Perioperative data, surgical approach specifics, objective, and subjective outcomes of this new approach. Results: The procedure was performed without intra-operative complications; estimated blood loss was 10 ml. Operative time was 150 minutes, console time 120 minutes, total docking time 6 minutes. Dexter performed as expected; no device-related issues or robotic arm collisions occurred. The patient did not require pain medication and was released on the second postoperative day. Conclusion: RAH performed below the bikini line using the Dexter robotic system™ is a feasible, safe, and adequate procedure. These initial results should be confirmed and further extensively refurbished with larger patient cohorts, and functional and psychological outcomes need further investigation.
