Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to explore and describe how bilingual programmes are organized and implemented within the unique linguistic and socio-economic case of Qatar. Specifically the thesis explored bilingual programs offered by two types of primary schools in Qatar: international schools and independent schools. Qatar launched a new initiative for educational development in 2001 but with hardly any research linked to these changes. The study was positioned within a qualitative interpretive tradition drawing on elements of ethnography and grounded theory as tools of methodology. However

Many scholars have assumed that Jesus and Gospel traditions have been transmitted in a unidirectional way from Judaeo-Palestinian into Hellenistic, from oral into written, and from Semitic into Greek. This means that the former three traditions (e.g. Judaeo-Palestinian, oral, and Semitic traditions) are earlier and more original than the latter three traditions (e.g. Hellenistic, written, and Greek traditions). The unidirectionality hypotheses of transmission of Jesus and Gospel traditions have driven many scholars to single out Judaeo-Palestinian, oral, and Semitic traditions from Hellenistic

Previous studies have largely demonstrated that bilinguals simultaneously access representations from both languages during comprehension, thus adhering to the non-selective activation approach. How

Abstract:
The suggestion that bilinguals show enhanced cognitive control compared to monolinguals in certain aspects of executive function has received much contention. While this has been explained as a result of the extensive training in bilinguals having to manage the conflict that arises from their concurrently active langauges, others have argued that the superiority in executive control is attenuated when background variables such as immigration status, education and general cognitive ability is taken into account. This thesis was motivated by the general question: How is executive control influen

Abstract:
Code-Switching (CS) is a world-wide phenomenon, allowing bilinguals across the globe to alternate effortlessly between their languages. As interesting as it sounds, code-switching can be used for a number of reasons, and there are different linguistic contexts in which this phenomenon occurs. Umeå is a very multinational city in northern Sweden, and this paper will present the results from interviewing a group of three (a) Arabic-Swedish speakers and a group of three (b) English-Swedish speakers on their use of language and code-switching. The results show that group a and group b both use CS

Abstract:
The students in the Brunei mainstream education system eventually learn most subjects in English, which is not the first language for most of them. Reading in English is valued as it provides access to knowledge across the curriculum for the majority of students in Brunei as elsewhere too. Reading both for comprehension and learning are two areas of interest in this study. This thesis looks at the strategy use of (upper) secondary students of different abilities from three schools in Brunei when reading their academic materials in English. It aims to compare reading strategies the students use

Abstract:
Reading is the key to knowledge and learning and by implication, life success. Most South African children „learn to read‟ in their home languages (HL), such as isiXhosa in the Eastern Cape, and then at the beginning of Grade 4 are expected to make two significant transitions: they must begin to „read to learn‟ and they must do so in an additional language (usually English). The research evidence is damning: Intermediate Phase children are failing to read and failing to learn. This study is concerned with two of the possible, and often conflicting, reasons for the reading problem: 1) that too

Abstract:
Previous research has mainly considered the impact of tone-language experience on ability to discriminate linguistic pitch, but proficient bilingual listening requires differential processing of sound variation in each language context. Here, we ask whether Mandarin-English bilinguals, for whom pitch indicates word distinctions in one language but not the other, can process pitch differently in a Mandarin context vs. an English context. Across three eye tracked word-learning experiments, results indicated that tone-intonation bilinguals process tone in accordance with the language context. In

This is a qualitative study on bilingualism from Somali children’s perspectives. It aims to examine how Somali-Swedish bilinguals understand their bilingual experiences in a Swedish context. It looks at questions that relate to their views on language use in family and peer group interactions, their attitude towards heritage language maintenance, and challenges they may face in their everyday bilingual experiences. Three interviews were carried out with six children of Somali background between the age of 12-15 years, interviewed in pairs, and the empirical data were subsequently analyzed them
