Bilingual children's language and literacy is stronger in some domains than others. Reanalysis of data from a broad-scale study of monolingual English and bilingual Spanish–English learners in Miami provided a clear demonstration of “profile effects,” where bilingual children perform at varying levels compared to monolinguals across different test types. Our results indicate that bilinguals use an amalgam (a combination of L1 and L2 strategies) of monolingual strategies in choosing the agent of a sentence. The reaction time (RT) data, however, reveal a slightly larger language specific component than the choice data. This chapter discusses a selection of the literature on the phonetic behavior of proficient bilinguals. It examines both perception and production, and it focuses on what is known about a particular bilingual group: Catalan–Spanish bilinguals. This population has received a lot of attention because it allows for the exploration of bilingual individuals with different experience profiles who reside in a speech community where both languages enjoy similar social status and are thus likely to be used by any member of the community in any given day. Phonetic research on this bilingual population has been concerned mostly with addressing the following question: What is the role of the age of first exposure to an additional language in the manner in which a bilingual will represent and process this language? Research on this population has sparked a wealth of investigations on other populations in order to address this question from multiple perspectives.

In a school in Namur, in the French-speaking part of Belgium, deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) pupils are co-enrolled in a mainstream school and are taught bilingually in French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB) and in French. This program has existed since 2000. It was initiated by the parents of a deaf child who took advantage of a decree that allowed the schools to organize teaching by immersion in a language other than French. After a presentation of the context in which this setting emerged and the way it is organized in practice, this chapter develops issues related to the pedagogical implications of welcoming all profiles of DHH learners, the search for an appropriate bilingual pedagogy, the co-teaching approach, and the complementarity between teachers and interpreters. It shows that these issues are essential conditions for ensuring that DHH pupils can benefit efficiently from the expected advantages of a co-enrollment setting.
