This paper presents a new approach to translate between Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Building Energy Modeling (BEM) that uses Modelica, an object-oriented declarative, equation-based simulation environment. The approach (BIM2BEM) has been developed using a data modeling method to enable seamless model translations of building geometry, materials, and topology. Using data modeling, we created a Model View Definition (MVD) consisting of a process model and a class diagram. The process model demonstrates object-mapping between BIM and Modelica-based BEM (ModelicaBEM) and facilitates the definition of required information during model translations. The class diagram represents the information and object relationships to produce a class package intermediate between the BIM and BEM. The implementation of the intermediate class package enables system interface (Revit2Modelica) development for automatic BIM data translation intoModelicaBEM. In order to demonstrate and validate our approach, simulation result comparisons have been conducted via three test cases using (1) the BIM-based Modelica models generated fromRevit2Modelicaand (2) BEM models manually created using LBNL Modelica Buildings library. Our implementation shows thatBIM2BEM(1) enables BIM models to be translated intoModelicaBEMmodels, (2) enables system interface development based on the MVD for thermal simulation, and (3) facilitates the reuse of original BIM data into building energy simulation without an import/export process.

As is common knowledge now, in 2016 it will be mandatory to use BIM on all public sector projects. This has clearly spurned a lot of interest in BIM within the construction industry. However, the industry appears to be struggling to find its feet as to what it needs to have in place before BIM based projects become a reality. Uses of BIM technology and associated processes have been categorized into 3 levels and the 2016 requirement is for Level 2 implementations only. This paper outlines the requirements of level 2 BIM implementation and assesses the status of the industry as a whole as to its readiness. There are various pre-requisites that need to be in place, mostly in relation to process protocols and standards. This paper gives an understanding of the roadmap that needs to be traversed in order to be ready for BIM. This paper presents an outline of the UK Government’s requirements for 2016 before discussing and assessing the UK construction industry’s readiness. Finally, the paper gives an outline of what needs to be in place for the government’s ambitions to be achieved as well as a summary of some of the challenges along the way and possible ways of addressing some of them.

With the ever-increasing population and historic highest energy demand, the energy efficiency of buildings is becoming crucial. Architectural firms are moving from traditional Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to BIM. However, nearly 40% of the energy consumption is due to buildings. Therefore, there is a need to integrate BIM with Building Energy Modeling (BEM), which presents an innovative opportunity to demonstrate the potential of BIM to minimize energy consumption by integrating building information software with data from existing energy-efficient building automation systems (EBAS). BEM is a form of computational analysis that can be used in conjunction with BIM or Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) systems. In this paper, an attempt has been made to explore the existing literature on BIM and BEM and identify the effect of the integration of BEM in BIM in the design phase of the project. A recent survey from the last ten years (2012 to 2023) was carried out on Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus databases. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied, and papers were scrutinized. From the results, it can be observed that the convergence of BIM and BEM is found to be useful in practical applications; however, projects with short life cycles might not be suitable for this solution. Challenges exist in the interoperability tools which have restrictions on data exchange. Binary translation is found to be the most suitable candidate for data exchange. The analysis further showed that the most used program for integrating BIM/BEM is Green Building Studio developed by Autodesk to improve construction and operational efficiencies.

With the advancement of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, BIM gains more importance and becomes a prerequisite in building projects. BIM is useful throughout a building lifecycle; from building bid, design, construction, completion, operation, and maintenance to building demolition. However, current information exchange surrounding BIM is still limited and bound to a single participant or organization and is also limited to a particular phase in the building lifecycle. This paper aims to explore BIM information exchange among many parties involved in a secure manner using a blockchain platform throughout the whole building lifecycle. In this research, many parties involved in the building project will be able to recognize one another through deployment of a permissioned blockchain. This information exchange uses Hyperledger Composer, a permissioned blockchain running on a blockchain platform called Hyperledger Fabric. Our experiment shows that BIM information exchange could be further improved. In this study, BIM information exchange can be implemented not only in one building phase but throughout the whole building lifecycle. It also facilitates BIM information exchange among multiple participants in a secure manner via a permissioned blockchain.

Abstract Building Information Modelling (BIM) has a high potential to assist in designing a green building. Integrating BIM and building rating tools can help designers design buildings that fit the minimum requirements of green certification. Without BIM, green certifications are performed manually and after project completion. Incorporating BIM and building rating tools in the early decision-making process of a project is more significant to enhance building sustainability. The study aims to review the extent of integration of building rating tools with BIM for green certification in the current research. Upon screening the relevant publications, it is discovered that only a small number of studies have been conducted that link BIM and green assessment tools. Only a total of 19 studies are eligible for the review process. The content analysis results of these studies point out that LEED is the most used building rating tool for integration with BIM. The integration is mostly made by using Autodesk Revit and Dynamo. The major focus for the integration is on the energy and atmosphere sub-category as the credit allocation is the highest. More studies integrating the BIM-building rating tool are needed to automate the green certification process.

Gleichzeitig verlaufen der Planungs- sowie der begleitende Kommunikationsprozess zwischen den unterschiedlichen beteiligten Gewerken zunehmend digital. Der Planungsansatz des Building Information Modeling (BIM) verfolgt eben diese Ziele, im Wesentlichen aber bei der Planung und dem Betrieb von Gebäuden. Im Beitrag wird untersucht, wie sich der BIM-Ansatz auf die Fabrikplanung übertragen lässt. The requirements of the planning process, in particular with regard to the planning quality, rise more and more with increasing cost pressure. At the same time, the planning process and the accompanying communication process between the different work areas involved are increasingly digital. The planning approach of Building Information Modeling (BIM) pursues precisely these goals, but essentially in the planning and operation of buildings. The article examines how the BIM approach can be transferred to factory planning.

Building maintenance is essential for the operation of the building to maintain the reliability and performance of the building to match its economic age. There are many buildings whose maintenance is inferior from a technical, administrative, and budgetary perspective, so an appropriate maintenance design model is needed according to the operational needs of the building. On the other hand, the development of digital information technology is getting faster and more widely used. One is Building Information Modeling (BIM), where the entire activity process works in collaboration and integration. Therefore, this study aims to develop a proper building maintenance design model using BIM. The method used is to apply building maintenance standards in Indonesia (Public Works Ministrial Regulation No 24/PRT/M/2008) in BIM supporting applications, namely Autodesk Revit (for visualizing 3D buildings) and Autodesk BIM 360 Ops (for maintenance management), as a case study using the Maintenance Management Design of Walini Station which is one of the Jakarta-Bandung fast train stations with very modern, complex and complicated building components. The maintenance design model is carried out through the following stages: (i) building modeling using Autodesk Revit based on shop drawings in 3D and can be applied to 4D and 5D needs; (ii) export Autodesk Revit results to the Autodesk BIM 360 Ops application because this application can store a database of all building operations; and (iii) conducting a maintenance design simulation using the Autodesk BIM 360 Ops application. The study results show that BIM technology can be used as a detailed, accurate, effective, efficient, and integrated maintenance design model. Most efficient construction management process could be designed on most of PM branches, such as Project Supply Management, quality management in the project, Project Cost and Cost Management, Project Timing Management. The article presents the impact of GOST R 54869―201 “PROJECT MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS” on one of the most complicated environments, including BIM in construction. In Russia, much is said about supporting construction site project management; there are federal and regional programs of implementing BIM. There is also an understanding of what kind of construction design projects it is and why it is needed. There are many definitions of BIM design project detail level. Each region country has its own limitations and conditions for implementing BIM for construction project management. Another important aspect of implementing BIM opportunities in the regions is their isolation in the presented region and development will cause demand for local investments.

Building information modeling (BIM) is a new method of dealing with the design and information of building component, this project created Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) in BIM with parametric design, it is a new way to study and analysis BIPV. In BIM models, all information about the building components and its lifecycle are included. Therefore the study utilized this important characteristic of BIM to explore its application in BIPV design. The author used BIM software Revit to develop a BIPV building model as the parametric prototype and programmed with panels’ information in C# 2008 to correlate the angle of photovoltaic (PV) panels with sun altitude, and finally applied application programming interface (API) in Revit to control these panels’ angle by the sun path.

Building Information Modeling (BIM), in the last couple of decades, has emerged as a technology that can be used in combination with different methodologies in the fields of architecture, engineering, and construction industry as a digital model to facilitate the planning and design process, construction and maintenance. Using the tools of BIM, the stakeholders generate the digital models that can help them to identify the problems. A total of 24 conference papers, referenced journal articles, and other academic sources were analyzed based on their relevance and research focus areas. This article provides a review on the integration of building information modeling with different methodologies for seismic retrofitting of both structural and non-structural components of buildings. Pre-seismic and post-seismic applications of Building Information Modeling with the integration of different methodologies have been reviewed overbuilding life cycles with a view of addressing the challenges and recommending the future research perspectives. In the end, by stating the possibilities of integration of BIM tools with different methodologies mainly using Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering as a paradigm which is fully probabilistic, this paper concludes that the implication of the Building Information Modeling with the integration of different methodologies isnt merely the inclusion of the certain conditions, but also of the numerical integration of all the possible uncertainties.

The need for continuous global improvement in the construction industry’s current state is inevitable. This pursuit for advancement is to benefit all concerned stakeholders in the construction industry, and innovation has been acknowledged as this improvement measure. Interestingly, Building Information Model (BIM) is a typical example of such innovation in the construction industry. It circumvents human errors, lessening project costs, strengthening productivity and quality, and reducing the project delivery time. This analysis investigates the factors influencing BIM implementation in construction in developing nations. A comprehensive literature review was performed to determine what factors contribute to BIM adoption. These drivers were categorized using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was also used with a questionnaire survey of 100 Nigerian building engineering professionals. Findings from the model highlight the most critical drivers of sustainable BIM deployment. The study’s conclusion will serve as a guideline for policymakers in developing nations that want to finish successful projects by avoiding BIM implementation drivers and improving the accomplishment of building projects via the usage of BIM.

The use of building information modeling (BIM) for building sustainability assessment (BSA) is a thriving topic within the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Despite the various research approaches to employing BSA with BIM support, the research is limited to the BIM implications of BSA methods in developing countries. This paper presents how BIM can assist the BSA processes in Kazakhstan, using a previously developed building sustainability assessment framework for Kazakhstan (KBSAF). This framework has 46 assessment indicators grouped into nine assessment categories. The categories and assessment indicators of KBSAF were derived considering the regional variations and country-specific differences in the assessment factors. In this paper, BIM functions for BSA were identified through literature review; their applicability for KBSAF was evaluated by mapping the functions with the assessment indicators of KBSAF and a BIM-based BSA framework (BIM-KBSAF) was proposed. The proposed framework was validated through a three-round Delphi survey. One of the results demonstrates that for KBSAF, BIM can assess 24 out of 46 assessment indicators. The proposed framework could serve as a systematic guide to the application of BIM for BSA. Furthermore, it can facilitate the BSA process and save considerable time and effort.

Dispute is recognized as critical cause of deficiency and low performance in construction projects. Plenty of studies have been done in construction dispute management recently; however, there are no studies on construction dispute elimination. This study aims to propose a building information modeling (BIM) approach to control conflict causes before the occurrence of dispute. BIM is one of the latest platforms that promote a high level of collaboration, information sharing, and coordination where its implementation ranges from project initialization to completion stage. The circumstances associating with BIM technology can be utilized to explore the possibilities in conflict and dispute resolution system. Questionnaire surveys are used to collect the primary data. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and multi attribute utility technique (MAUT) are adopted to develop an algorithm and a decision-making framework to manage and resolve the potential conflict causes, particularly for the Malaysian construction industry. Data analysis emerged that five critical conflict factors in Malaysian construction industry are insufficient monitoring of CPM scheduling and updates requirements; failures to understand and correctly bid or price the works; delay in running bill payment; inadequate contractors’ management, supervision, and coordination; and error and omission in design that are originated from time, cost, quality, and documentation. Further analysis to prioritize BIM functions in construction conflict management has been done by the combination of AHP and MAUT results. Consequently, it is affirmed that clash detection and cost estimating, 4D scheduling, 3D visualization and structure analysis as BIM functions obtained the highest score to control conflicting factors.

This paper analyzes select framework methods, tools, and processes, identifying key guidelines required to create a BIM framework customized to local requirements; this will have a positive effect on the construction industry by lowering the cost of buildings and improving the communication among parties, and leading to the development of frameworks based on local indicators. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to determine components and factors from structure frameworks with the main findings then classified and categorized into the following sectors -- government support, maturity level measurement, standards, protocol, database, and education plan. This permits the development of a comparison highlighting the frameworks’ differences and summing up possible strategies for BIM implementation on several bases, such as region differentiation and the local industries’ Political, Economic, Socio-Cultural, Technological (PEST) aspects, allowing for greater understanding of BIM implementation on various scales. The selection of the BIM frameworks was dependent on specific criteria with a minimum score of 4 out of 5 required to merit inclusion. Three strategies for the creation of a BIM framework were discovered and were seen to vary across regions. The discovery of these strategies lays the groundwork for future research into the development of these frameworks to determine the potential advantages and downsides of each.

Com o principal objetivo de levantar informações sobre o conceito da tecnologia BIM e como essa tecnologia pode influenciar o planejamento de pequenas e grandes obras, foi utilizado como procedimentos metodológico a realização de levantamento bibliográfico de artigos e científicos, dissertações, revistas cientificas, livros nacionais e internacionais. Verificou-se que a tecnologia BIM pode potencializar a construção civil, analisando, sustentabilidade, produtividade e controle de custos, pois não é algo meramente operacional, tratando-se de uma forma de pensar, de gestão de informação, de reconhecer que um projeto não se limita a atividades 2D e 3D. BIM é comunicação, análise, otimização e produção sustentável e simultânea. Concluiu-se que, embora existam dificuldades iniciais na implantação do BIM, os benefícios superam as dificuldades e permitem que a sociedade usufrua de edifícios cuja construção permitiu a otimização de recursos e apresentam maior qualidade.

Information on BIM modelling tools that may be needed in the maintenance of energy-efficient buildings has been collected. Five main tools have been identified and described, including BEM and CFD technologies, which have been reviewed in more detail. The requirements for information models that integrate with third-party BIM modelling tools for analysing building thermal performance and indoor climate have also been identified. The article provides examples of foreign experience in the use of BIM modeling tools used in the analysis of existing energy-efficient buildings.

BIM can simulate buildings throughout PLC, detect and resolve problems, and improve building visualization that contributes to the representation of actual project details in the construction stage. BIM contributes to project management promotion by detecting problems that lead to conflicts, cost overruns, and time delays. This work aims to implement an effective BIM for the Iraqi construction projects’ life cycle. The methodology used is a literature review to collect the most important factors contributing to the success of BIM implementation, interview the team of the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) building, and strive to improve the BEP of the CBI building. However, previous studies indicate collaborative work and communications enhance effective BIM implementation, which can improve BIM use by applying a BEP and an AEC (UK) BIM protocol that leads to positive BIM impact. BEP comprises important information and goals related to the intended project, including the BIM collaborative process (process map), information exchange requirements, BIM data management, BIM model management, and quality control, which are considered essential for enhancing BIM collaboration during PLC. This paper concludes that implementing BIM effectively requires overcoming obstacles faced by Iraqi construction projects. Effective BIM implementation requires improving collaboration and communication throughout the construction process, which could be achieved by depending on the BIM Execution Planning Guide(BEP Guide) and the AEC (UK) BIM Protocol 2012 V2.0

Traditional energy analysis in Building Information Modeling (BIM) only accounts for the energy requirements of building operations during a portion of the occupancy phase of the building’s life cycle and as such is unable to quantify the true impact of buildings on the environment. Specifically, the typical energy analysis in BIM does not account for the energy associated with resource formation, recycling, and demolition. Therefore, a comprehensive method is required to analyze the true environmental impact of buildings. Emergy analysis can offer a holistic approach to account for the environmental cost of activities involved in building construction and operation in all its life cycle phases from resource formation to demolition. As such, the integration of emergy analysis with BIM can result in the development of a holistic sustainability performance tool. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a comprehensive framework for the integration of emergy analysis with existing Building Information Modeling tools. The proposed framework was validated using a case study involving a test building element of 8’ × 8’ composite wall. The case study demonstrated the successful integration of emergy analysis with Revit®2021 using the inbuilt features of Revit and external tools such as MS Excel. The framework developed in this study will help in accurately determining the environmental cost of the buildings, which will help in selecting environment-friendly building materials and systems. In addition, the integration of emergy into BIM will allow a comparison of various built environment alternatives enabling designers to make sustainable decisions during the design phase.

Mobile Building Information Modeling (BIM) is noted for tools that enable the systematic interchange of information and contribute to enhancing collaborative performance through BIM. BIM programs, which are continuously available in the mobile environment, have been developed. Moreover, in some sites, mobile BIM is applied to generate benefits in projects. Various efforts are being made to use mobile BIM; however, its utilization is low. Also, mobile BIM has lacked an analysis of the factors that affect actual users’ acceptance of mobile BIM. Therefore, this study analyzes the factors that affect the acceptance of mobile BIM by construction practitioners and presents the association of factors as a model to activate mobile BIM use. To this end, this study analyzed a literature review for suggesting the factors that were expected to affect mobile BIM acceptance. The assessment items were decided based on the analysis result. Second, 111 copies were received by surveying the construction practitioners. Third, it identified factors that significantly affected the acceptance of mobile BIM and proposed models through factor analysis and structural equation models. Finally, based on the analysis, it presented the findings. This study expects to contribute to enhanced acceptance of mobile BIM technology by managing the significant factors properly. Also, it is expected that the result can be used to develop a variety of mobile BIM that is more easily acceptable to them. This study presented a model for accepting mobile BIM based on the survey results of Korean practitioners; therefore, it is necessary to explore ways to generalize the model in the future.

It is a system or technology involving some important information in construction project and is used in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). Construction employer in Indonesia has not much used BIM system, in fact that BIM make the construction process is easy and fast especially in building construction compared to the conventional construction. It, therefore, needs further research to investigate the superiority of BIM in building skyscraper. The type of the study was qualitative by comparing the skyscraper building using conventional system and BIM system. This present case study expects to insist the construction employer that the use of BIM technology promises time and cost efficiency although it requires high investment compared to the conventional method. The result of the study inferred that using Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology results in time and cost efficiency and effectiveness in constructing building compared to the conventional method, which needs long time to complete the work and high cost.

This technical report discusses the significance of using building information modelling (BIM) in project management as a tool to enhance cost reduction based on the simulation of computational models. The methodology employed was the case study of a software solution that makes its product libraries available in BIM format, intended for the simulation of computational models of a multinational company. Data were collected through document analysis and interviews with specialists from the Siemens company. The conclusion of the data analysis of this study resulted in a better understanding of the issues that the simulation of computational models idealised by BIM methodology and their data proposes to solve. The findings show that the simulation of computational models contributes to decision-making in civil construction, whether in the design of new buildings or modernization processes. The contribution of this work is strengthened by presenting a benefits proposal for the use of computational modelling in the context of civil construction using good design practices.

Building information modeling (BIM) has improved efficiency in construction projects by utilizing digital instrument capabilities. However, the use of this technology has brought new challenges, particularly legal and contract issues. Conventional construction contracts cannot respond to specific BIM conditions. Therefore, several contract solutions have been proposed to tackle this problem. Despite significant efforts, researchers are still attempting to develop a suitable contract framework and conditions due to the complexities of BIM technical and legal aspects. The present study reviews the solutions developed within seven pioneer countries in BIM and collects the views of construction experts selected by the snowball sampling method in order to identify the most crucial factors that should be considered in BIM contracts. This work incorporated and analyzed 47 questions relating to BIM legal and contract factors in five groups, including BIM contractual basics, BIM contractual obligations and approvals, BIM ownership and copyright, general rules, and other contractual topics. The findings could be exploited to develop a proper BIM contract framework in compliance with construction rules and conditions.

Abstract Building Information Modeling (BIM) emerges as one of the megatrends that will modernize the Malaysian construction industry due to its vital role in collaboration, coordination and communication in real-time among construction industry stakeholders. In 2019, the government of Malaysia has mandated the use of BIM technology for public projects worths more than 100 million. However, less than half of the construction projects in Malaysia is currently using the BIM system. In order to encourage the implementation of BIM, there is an important need to educate the construction industry players with realistic information on BIM technology. Based on previous literature, disruption of BIM toward the traditional practice of construction activities can be managed through exposure and incremental of BIM knowledge. Therefore, this study explores the current awareness of construction industry players on the application of BIM toward sustainability aspects, particularly on social sustainability. A set of questionnaire survey is used to gather the required data and a total of 133 contractors have responded to the survey. The data were analyzed using the frequency distribution to indicate the highlighted application of BIM foresees by contractors that contribute to social sustainability. The finding indicates that the level of awareness is influenced by their knowledge on BIM. Therefore, providing a better understanding and wider exposure on BIM could improve the implementation of BIM in the construction projects, which align with the government agenda.

Integrating building information modeling (BIM) technology into historical and cultural heritage structures has resulted in historic building information modeling (H-BIM), an effective method for managing and documenting invaluable historical artifacts. H-BIM has the potential to aid with the design, restoration, and maintenance activities of historical buildings by properly integrating parametric data and deliberately assessing semantic information, thus progressing the 3D model’s performance. H-BIM also aims to conduct cultural heritage (CH) studies in a systematic manner by combining 3D modeling techniques and information management. The first step in this process is to conduct a suitable geomatic survey to build accurate 3D models. The most efficient modeling method is to employ 3D point cloud data that are acquired using the terrestrial laser scanning method. This study proposes a manual modeling strategy for urban historical buildings that falls within the scope of the H-BIM methodology. The proposed modeling strategy follows a workflow that inserts point cloud data into the BIM environment in order to create a 3D urban cultural heritage model using ontologies applied with the H-BIM methodology. With this objective in mind, the H-BIM model development platform Revit was used to model the object elements of the inheritance structure in 3D and save them in the BIM library. It is very important to model building elements separately in 3D modeling studies. The resulting BIM product sheds light on fundamental data for the future planning, design, operation, and maintenance processes of the building. Users can obtain data suitable for H-BIM by adding graphical and non-graphical data.

Conventional practice on managing information in construction has sometimes created a miscommunication and errors among construction players. Therefore, Information Communication Technology (ICT) has introduced Building Information Modeling (BIM) for managing construction projects effectively and efficiently. Different terms on definition of BIM have been used and expanded widely with different perspectives. The aim of this paper is to explore the notion of BIM development from the year of 1975 to 2013. The methodology of this paper is based on literature review on BIM definitions. The findings reveal that there are six perspectives in BIM development which are design, estimation, construction process, building life cycle, performance and technology. From the development of BIM, it can be concluded that BIM is a new methodology that involves the use of technologies in order to improve collaboration and communication of construction players as well as the management of documentation.

Building information modelling (BIM) is the first step towards the implementation of the industrial revolution 4.0, in which virtual reality and digital twins are key elements. At present, buildings are responsible for 40% of the energy consumption in Europe and, so, there is a growing interest in reducing their energy use. In this context, proper interoperability between BIM and building energy model (BEM) is paramount for integrating the digital world into the construction sector and, therefore, increasing competitiveness by saving costs. This paper evaluates whether there is an automated or semi-automated BIM to BEM workflow that could improve the building design process. For this purpose, a residential building and a warehouse are constructed using the same BIM authoring tool (Revit), where two open schemas were used: green building extensible markup language (gbXML) and industry foundation classes (IFC). These transfer files were imported into software compatible with the EnergyPlus engine—Design Builder, Open Studio, and CYPETHERM HE—in which simulations were performed. Our results showed that the energy models were built up to 7.50% smaller than in the BIM and with missing elements in their thermal envelope. Nevertheless, the materials were properly transferred to gbXML and IFC formats. Moreover, the simulation results revealed a huge difference in values between the models generated by the open schemas, in the range of 6 to 900 times. Overall, we conclude that there exists a semi-automated workflow from BIM to BEM which does not work well for big and complex buildings, as they present major problems when creating the energy model. Furthermore, most of the issues encountered in BEM were errors in the transfer of BIM data to gbXML and IFC files. Therefore, we emphasise the need to improve compatibility between BIM and model exchange formats by their developers, in order to promote BIM–BEM interoperability.

An evolutionary method of transforming the entire building process is the 5D BIM approach. This paper introduces BIM as a strong instrument for "model analysis, detection of clashes, simulation and evaluation." In addition, BIM offers a digital machine-readable representation of building data and various other processes to enhance design, development, operating processes and boost life-cycle building functions.

Abstract Given the ability of a Building Information Model (BIM) to serve as a multi-disciplinary data repository, this paper seeks to explore and exploit the sustainability value of Building Information Modelling/models in delivering buildings that require less energy for their operation, emit less CO2 and at the same time provide a comfortable living environment for their occupants. This objective was achieved by a critical and extensive review of the literature covering: (1) building energy consumption, (2) building energy performance and analysis, and (3) building information modeling and energy assessment. The literature cited in this paper showed that linking an energy analysis tool with a BIM model helped project design teams to predict and create optimized energy consumption. To validate this finding, an in-depth analysis was carried out on a completed BIM integrated construction project using the Arboleda Project in the Dominican Republic. The findings showed that the BIM-based energy analysis helped the design team achieve the world’s first 103% positive energy building. From the research findings, the paper concludes that linking an energy analysis tool with a BIM model helps to expedite the energy analysis process, provide more detailed and accurate results as well as deliver energy-efficient buildings. The study further recommends that the adoption of a level 2 BIM and the integration of BIM in energy optimization analyse should be made compulsory for all projects irrespective of the method of procurement (government-funded or otherwise) or its size.

The authors analyze e-collaboration performance in two construction projects of differing complexity, to gain an understanding of how collaborative design based on building information modeling (BIM) is influenced by the complexity of the building project. The findings suggest that the perceived business value of BIM depends on project complexity and that BIM-based collaboration does not yield unconditional positive implications for all types of construction projects. The authors argue that current practice would benefit from a more structured approach to building business cases for e-collaboration, comprising the following aspects: 1) a thorough assessment of BIM's potential benefits based on the complexity of the project; 2) an assessment of all designers' collaborative BIM capabilities and maturity; 3) a reliable cost estimate for full-scale BIM e-collaboration; and 4) a cost benefit analysis to identify the business value of BIM-based e-collaboration. In addition, a systematic approach to collaboration engineering would be required to develop e-collaboration environments customized for the information needs of a specific project.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify critical non-value adding (NVA) building information modeling (BIM) implementation activities in current building project delivery process, develop a BIM implementation readiness (BIMIR) evaluation model, and assess BIMIR statuses in building projects in Singapore. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey and four post-survey interviews were conducted in Singapore. A fuzzy synthetic evaluation approach was adopted in the model development. Findings In total, 38 out of 44 NVA BIM implementation activities were deemed critical and used in the proposed model, among which “lack of involvement by contractors to contribute site knowledge” in the design development phase was ranked top. This model was validated in five projects. It was found that most of 73 surveyed building projects were in a low BIMIR status and the assessment results were consistent with current industry practices of BIM implementation in Singapore. Research limitations/implications There may be geographical limitation on the identification of the critical NVA BIM implementation activities. However, because BIM mandate spreads globally, the findings can help overseas project teams customize their own NVA activities and evaluation models. Practical implications As BIM implementation is mandated in Singapore, BIMIR evaluation helps local project teams identify weak areas of their BIM implementation activities and prioritize resources to enhance those areas. Originality/value No tool has been developed for evaluating BIMIR at the project level in the construction industry in Singapore or at large in Asia. Four BIMIR statuses are defined, which are consistent with Singapore’s BIM guidelines and standards.

As an emerging technological and procedural shift within the building design industry, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a set of interacting processes and technologies to manage essential building design and project data in digital format throughout the design procedure. It is also a central data repository to store and recall different kinds of project information through creating a 3D model as well as providing intelligent data for this model. Besides, project documentation can be brought forward as a byproduct of the 3D model. This kind of BIM approach allows designers to finish their design work and have the documentation of a building simultaneously. As a result, this design approach can accelerate the design procedure of building project through less time and effort. This paper begins with an outlook on the mechanism that BIM approach how to increase the productivity rates and reduce the waste of resources in architecture industry. Then, it provides a project example on theuse of Autodesk Revit software system. At the end, a discussion on how BIM approach is applied to into the building design industry and on the potential benefits of BIM approach is put forward.

Abstract In the paper the topic of Building Information Technology BIM is investigated. It is new in Polish circumstances technology for construction and for building product industry, which contribute to change and develop level of industrialization. Especially challenge raising from the information and introducing IT technology into daily practice is considered to provide changes in construction branch of economy. In Poland there is the hot need of start to introduce BIM as the common technology for owners of assets, facility management, construction entities, design offices, administration officers and many other players relative to construction data and processes. BIM technology introduction, basing on foreign case studies, results in cost savings, control and time reduction of investment processes and some more advantages. The perspective of digital buildings, digital infrastructure, digital roads, digital railways and digital cities is outlined at the perspective of technology challenge, but simply transfiguration of many fields of personal everyday life, where digitalization is already present and with the question when it will be common in professional activity, particularly in civil engineering.

Eco-friendly building designs that use building information modeling (BIM) have become popular, and a variety of eco-friendly building assessment technologies that take advantage of BIM are being developed. However, existing building environmental performance assessment technologies that use BIM are linked to external assessment tools, and there exist compatibility issues among programs; it requires a considerable amount of time to address these problems, owing to the lack of experts who can operate the programs. This study aims to develop eco-friendly templates for assessing the embodied environmental impact of buildings using BIM authoring tools as part of the development of BIM-based building life cycle assessment (LCA) technologies. Therefore, an embodied environmental impact unit database was developed, for major building materials during production and operating stages, to perform embodied environmental impact assessments. Moreover, a major structural element library that uses the database was developed and a function was created to produce building environmental performance assessment results tables, making it possible to review the eco-friendliness of buildings. A case study analysis was performed to review the feasibility of the environmental performance assessment technologies. The results showed a less than 5% effective error rate in the assessment results that were obtained using the technology developed in this study compared with the assessment results based on the actual calculation and operating stage energy consumption figures, which proves the reliability of the proposed approach.

Background:Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been recommended as the best tool to improve construction processes by many researchers. However, most construction companies do not adopt BIM because there are many limitations slowing BIM adoption.Objective:The aim of this paper is to investigate the factors that limit BIM implementation in the construction industry.Methods:To investigate the research objectives, a quantitative approach was adopted and a structured questionnaire was designed. A total of sixty-eight copies of the questionnaire were distributed and sixty-five of them were satisfactorily completed, making the total response rate = 95.58%. Snowball sampling method helped to obtain a high rate of response and thus increase accuracy.Results and Conclusion:BIM limitation factors were divided into five categories. The results illustrated that the personnel category was ranked as the most important, while the legal category was ranked as the least important. Findings showed that requirement of large culture change within the organization, lack of senior management support, lack of knowledge on how to implement BIM, lack of staff experience and skills, and need to change in workflows to comply with the new requirements were ranked as the most important factors that obstacle BIM implementation.

Building maintenance is gaining an increasing attention in the various fields of scientific research and there was a need for the use of new technologies in maintenance management, as the facility management deal with a large amount of information relating to maintenance, which includes drawings and specifications, lists, and reports, and the use of paper files leads to decrease the efficiency and create a shortage of data and information. The authors offer in this research tool to manage the maintenance process by using the BIM through linking deterioration models and three-dimensional model of the facility to be maintained and compensate the external investigation data for maintenance work in these models to get at the end of this research and with the help of the possibilities offered by Revit database to an upcoming maintenance items and arrange them according to their importance and impact on the facility and the estimated budget for the periodic maintenance and distribution of this budget on the various construction elements and the development of resources plan for next year.

Building information modeling (BIM) is a key approach for the digitization of the sector. Therefore, states worldwide put BIM at the center of their construction digitalization strategies. However, strategies vary significantly, and so does BIM implementation and its adoption over time, thus making the comparison between countries considerably challenging. Therefore, the first part of this article provides a comprehensive review of available publications in the field of BIM adoption at the national and international level. BIM adoption in Slovakia is systematically analyzed based on an anonymous online BIM survey that focuses on various areas of BIM. The focus of the BIM survey was on the assessment of the readiness of experts who work with BIM methodology, their maturity, skillsets, and BIM adoption motivation, along with the means of communication and collaboration using Common Data Environment (CDE). Furthermore, we focused on the project management perspective, which covers the existence and compliance with BIM execution plan (BEP) evaluation. In the concluding part, requirements, barriers, and future developments are discussed in detail. The BIM survey provides an insight in the current state of the art of BIM in the industry that allows for a better understanding of its potential and a more informed development and implementation of BIM strategies. This study is an important contribution to BIM and digitalization benchmarking that provides valuable information to digitalization policy makers at the governmental and business levels.
