Abstract:
A new approach, based on maximum likelihood, is developed for binary object image restoration. This considers the image formation process as a stochastic process, with noise as a random variable. The likelihood function is constructed for the cases of Gaussian and Poisson noise. An uphill climb method is used to find the object, defined by its "grain" positions, through maximizing the likelihood function for grain positions. In addition, some a priori information regarding object size and contour of shapes is used. This is summarized as a "neighbouring point" rule. Some examples of computer ge

The optimal exploitation of the information provided by hyperspectral images requires the development of advanced image processing tools. This hierarchical region-based representation can be interpreted as a set of hierarchical regions stored in a tree structure. Hence, the Binary Partition Tree succeeds in presenting: (i) the

Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis consists of three main topics: document segmentation and classification into text and score, efficient computation with binary representations, and deep learning architectures for polyphonic music transcription and classification. In the case of musical documents, an important problem is separating text from musical score by detecting the corresponding boundary boxes. A new algorithm is proposed for pixel-wise classification of digital documents in musical score and text. It is based on a bag-of-visual-words approach and random fo

Abstract:
As the electronic industry advances rapidly, the dimensions of the semiconductor products keep on being shrunk and that leads to more stringent requirement on process control and quality assurance. In particular, area array packages like BGA, CSP, flip chips, wafer bumping and wafer-level packaging need to have the 3D quality of some micro-surfaces inspected accurately and efficiently. An example of the micro-surfaces is the solder bumps for direct die-to-die bonding, which are of size as small as 60 to 600 microns in diameter. However, the tiny size and often highly specular and textureless n

M.Phil.<br>This work proposes a fast local image feature detector and descriptor that is im- plementable on a GPU. The BFROST feature detector is the first published GPU implementation of the popular FAST detector. A simple but novel method of feature orientation estimation which can be calculated in constant time is proposed. The robustness and reliability of the orientation estimation is validated against rotation invariant descriptors such as SIFT and SURF. Furthermore, the BFROST feature descriptor is robust to noise, scalable, rotation invariant, fast to compute in parallel and maintains

Face detection and recognition has been very popular topics. Recently, its applications for mobile devices have gained tremendous attention due to the rapid expansion of the market. Although numerous techniques exist for face detection and recognition, only a few solve realistic challenges under the mobile device application environment. In this thesis, we propose an automatic face authentication system including both face detection and recognition components for mobile device applications by using spatially enhanced Local Binary Patterns (LBP) feature extraction. Ocean and seafloors are today probably the less known and unexplored places on earth.Nowadays, the continuous technological improvements on underwater inspection offer new challenges and possibilities. Beside the lassic acoustic sensors, modern cameras are playing an ever increasing role in autonomous underwater navigation. In particular, The capability to perform a context-driven navigation, based on what the vehicle is actually seeing on the seafloor, is of great interest in many research fields, spanning from marine archaeology and biology to environment preservation.
