ABSTRACT An all-sky sample of 1227 visual binaries based on Washington Double Star catalogue is constructed to infer the initial mass function (IMF), mass ratio, and projected distance distribution with a dedicated population synthesis model. Parallaxes from Gaia DR2 and Hipparcos are used to verify the distance distribution. The model is validated on the single-star Tycho-2 sample and successfully reproduces the observed magnitudes and angular separations. The projected separation distribution follows f(s) ∼ s−1.2 in 102–2 × 103 au range for 1–4.5 m⊙ primary stars. Several algorithms are expl

The Dual Post Correspondence Problem asks whether, for a given word α, there exists a pair of distinct morphisms σ,τ, one of which needs to be non-periodic, such that σ(α) = τ(α) is satisfied. This problem is important for the research on equality sets, which are a vital concept in the theory of computation, as it helps to identify words that are in trivial equality sets only. Little is known about the Dual PCP for words α over larger than binary alphabets, especially for so-called ratio-primitive examples. Studies on PCP, most of which have been laboratory-based, have largely used human assessment of colour to categorize pupae as green or brown. This binary categorization limits the understanding of finer pupal colour variations and their function. We conducted a study of PCP in the butterfly Catopsilia pomona by comparing laboratory-reared and wild populations. In this study, beyond simple optimizations of phenotyping, we propose an application of deep neural networks to make an image-based internal disorder diagnosis that is hard even for experts, and to visualize the reasons behind each diagnosis to provide biological interpretations.
