Abstract:
Underwater acoustic signature identification has been employed as a technique for detecting underwater vehicles, such as in anti-submarine warfare or harbour security systems. The underwater sound channel, however, has interference due to spatial variations in topography or sea state conditions and temporal variations in water column properties, which cause multipath and scattering in acoustic propagation. Thus, acoustic data quality control can be very challenging. One of challenges for an identification system is how to recognise the same target signature from measurements under different temporal and spatial settings. This paper deals with the above challenges by establishing an identification system composed of feature extraction, classification algorithms, and feature selection with two approaches to recognise the target signature of underwater radiated noise from a research vessel, Ocean Researcher III, with a bottom mounted hydrophone in five cruises in 2016 and 2017. The fundamental frequency and its power spectral density are known as significant features for classification. In feature extraction, we extract the features before deciding which is more significant from the two aforementioned features. The first approach utilises Polynomial Regression (PR) classifiers and feature selection by Taguchi method and analysis of variance under a different combination of factors and levels. The second approach utilises Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) selecting the optimised parameters of classifier via genetic algorithm. The real-time classifier of PR model is robust and superior to the RBFNN model in this paper. This suggests that the Automatic Identification System for Vehicles using Acoustic Signature developed here can be carried out by utilising harmonic frequency features extracted from unmasking the frequency bandwidth for ship noises and proves that feature extraction is appropriate for our targets. Abstract:
Herbal extract, rich with natural compounds, has been used for medicinal purpose such as treating neurological disorders such as cognitive defection for a long period of time, often without significant adverse effects. We compared AChE and BuChE – inhibition effect of total extracts and fractions of Huperzia serrata (Thunb.) Trevis. with alcaloid-rich extract. Our samples were subjected under supersonic extraction with ethanol 50o as solvent and fractionally extracted with n-hexane, EtOAc and n-butanol, respectively; alcaloid-rich extract was collected simutaneously. Ellman’s method was used to assay AChE and BuChE inhibition activity. Results: Alcaloid-rich extraction proved to be the superior AChE inhibiting agent, its activity nearly 6 fold of the most active Huperzia serrata extraction with IC50 value of 7.93 (5.43-10.98) µg/ml. While the fractions as well as the total extract did not provide any BuChE inhibition activity, alcaloid-rich extract showed weak ability (IC50 at 76.67 (64.78 – 91.84) µg/ml). Overall, the superior enzyme inhibition effect of alcaloid-rich extract might open a new approach in preventing and treating neurological disorders such as alzheimer’s. Keywords Huperzia serrata (Thunb.) Trevis, alcaloid, Acetylcholinesrerase inhibitors (AChE); butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), Alzheimer. Abstract:
Comparing Western thought and Chinese thought can be quite enriching, at a time when cultures in general can gain contact, as weil as fee!thrcatencd somctimes. l have tried, starting from modes of writings, at their origins, to figure out the advcnt and development ofthought on both sides. The point was also to choose a field ofexpcriment... 1 have thought that 1 could present 'reality', the 'world', from Western and Chinese approaches, with the efiècts of 'logos' and 'Reason' on one side and Taoist and sometimes Buddhist influences on the other. The 'process' of the world that China was conscious of cou id not allow her to apprchend reality such as Greece, very carly, and later Western thought could conceive it. Indeed, the only thing that would not change in this world is the state of 'impermanence' for China. From the yi jing, the Book of Changes, and ideographie patterns and methods, China wanted to show the world, the whole world. That was a vision definitely different from that of the West... Still, one question remains : where does this vision come from ? From thinkers. from Nature itself ? From modes of writings as human responses ? The exposition that I developed offers a few landmarks on both sidcs, but the question is still an open one

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the context and background of Ju-on: The Grudge (2002), starting with a synopsis of the film. Takashi Shimizu's Ju-on franchise was a principal instigator that drove the dissemination of contemporary Japanese horror to global success during the early years of the new millennium. Capitalising on the supernatural folklore that permeates Japan's theatrical and screen legacies, this wave of horror represented a new cinematic export that seamlessly merged the Japanese vengeful ghost tradition with the influence of transnational horror. J-horror brought culturally specific references that were sometimes lost on international audiences, but they also delighted with fresh motifs, aesthetics, and storylines. The chapter then looks at the journey of the Ju-on franchise from television to V-cinema, or direct to video films, to the big screen.
