Full textThis dissertation presents how material properties (solids densities, particle size distributions, particle shapes and concentration) of gold tailings slurries are related to their rheological parameters, which are yield stress and viscosity. In this particular case Bingham yield stresses and Bingham plastic viscosities. Predictive models were developed from analysing data in a slurry database to predict the Bingham yield stresses and Bingham plastic viscosities from their material properties. The overall goal of this study was to develop a validated set of mathematical models to predict Bingham yield stresses and Bingham plastic viscosities from their material properties. The interaction of the non-Newtonian material properties is very complex at varying mass solids concentrations. The evaluation of these interactions in terms of constitutive equations is almost impossible and the relationship between material properties, mass solids concentration and rheology can only be modelled in a statistical manner. The validity of each model is checked to ensure that predictions and interpretations are unbiased and efficient. This is done by comparing the resulting models to experimental data generated from test work. An in-depth analysis was conducted to see the interrelationship between the material properties and how they affect the yield stress and viscosity values.

Full textThis Ph.D. thesis aims to obtain and to develop some mathematical models to understand some aspects of the dynamics of heterogeneous granular fluids. More precisely, the expected result is to develop three models, one where the dynamics of the granular material is modeled using a mixture theory approach, and the other two, where we consider the granular fluid is modeled using a multiphase approach involving rigid structures and fluids. More precisely : • In the first model, we obtained a set of equations based on the mixture theory using homogenization tools and a thermodynamic procedure. These equations reflect two essential properties of granular fluids : the viscous nature of the interstitial fluid and a Coulomb-type of behavior of the granular component. With our equations, we study the problem of a dense granular heterogeneous flow, composed by a Newtonian fluid and a solid component in the setting of the Couette flow between two infinite cylinders. • In the second model, we consider the motion of a rigid body in a viscoplastic material. The 3D Bingham equations model this material, and the Newton laws govern the displacement of the rigid body. Our main result is the existence of a weak solution for the corresponding system. • In the third model, we consider the motion of a perfect heat conductor rigid body in a heat conducting Newtonian fluid. The 3D Fourier-Navier-Stokes equations model the fluid, and the Newton laws and the balance of internal energy model the rigid body. Our main result is the existence of a weak solution for the corresponding system. The weak formulation is composed by the balance of momentum and the balance of total energy equation which includes the pressure of the fluid, and it involves a free boundary (due to the motion of the rigid body). To obtain an integrable pressure, we consider a Navier slip boundary condition for the outer boundary and the mutual interface

Many studies have been carried out in square enclosures with generalized Newtonian fluids with natural convection in past few years for directly applications in compact heat exchangers, cooling of electronics systems and polymeric engineering. The natural convection in square enclosures with differently heated sidewalls, filled with power-law and Bingham fluids in addition with heterogeneous medium and centered block are analyzed in this study. The heterogeneous medium are solid, square, disconnected and conducting blocks. The parameters used are the Rayleigh number in the range 104 - 107 , power index n range of 0, 6 - 1, 6, Bingham number range of 0, 5 - Bimax , being the influence of Prandtl number investigated for each fluid model. The number of blocks for heterogeneous medium are 9, 16, 36 and 64, keeping constant solid to fluid conductive ratio, κ = 1. For enclosures with centered block are used the nondimensional block size from 0, 1 to 0, 9, with solid to fluid conductive ratio in range κ = 0, 1; 1 and 10. Mathematical modeling is done by mass, momentum and energy balance equations. The solution of equations have been numerically solved in ANSYS FLUENT R software. Firstly, numerical solutions for validation with Newtonian fluids in clean enclosures are conducted, followed by enclosures with heterogeneous medium and centered block. Subsequently, numerical solutions of power-law and Bingham fluids with same enclosures configurations are conducted. The results are reported in the form of streamlines, isotherms and average Nusselt number at hot wall. In general, the heat transfer process in enclosure is governed by Rayleigh number, size and thermal conductivity of the blocks, power index n for power-law fluid and Bingham number for Bingham fluid. Both fluid models are very sensitive with Prandtl number changes. Heterogeneous medium decrease heat transfer in enclosure when affects thermal boundary layer for both fluid models. One analytical prediction was made for power-law fluid. An increase in heat transfer occurs with low thermal conductivity block and few interference and with high thermal conductivity block and great interference, for both fluids.

Full textThis thesis is concerned with the devising and the analysis of hybrid discretization methods for nonlinear variational inequalities arising in computational mechanics. Salient advantages of such methods are local conservation at the cell level, robustness in different regimes and the possibility to use polygonal/polyhedral meshes with hanging nodes, which is very attractive in the context of mesh adaptation. Hybrid discretizations methods are based on discrete unknowns attached to the mesh faces. Discrete unknowns attached to the mesh cells are also used, but they can be eliminated locally by static condensation. Two main applications of hybrid discretizations methods are addressed in this thesis. The first one is the treatment using Nitsche's method of Signorini's contact problem (in the scalar-valued case) with a nonlinearity in the boundary conditions. We prove optimal error estimates leading to energy-error convergence rates of order (k+1) if face polynomials of degree k >= 0 are used. The second main application is on viscoplastic yield flows. We devise a discrete augmented Lagrangian method applied to the present hybrid discretization. We exploit the capability of hybrid methods to use polygonal meshes with hanging nodes to perform local mesh adaptation and better capture the yield surface. The accuracy and performance of the present schemes is assessed on bi-dimensional test cases including comparisons with the literature

The goal of this work is to numerically investigate the flow of power law and Bingham fluids next to the interface between a free and a porous region (fluid-porous interface) using the lattice Boltzmann method. For this, the flow between parallel plates partially filled by a porous material is studied, with the porous medium being represented by a set of solid square obstacles uniformly distributed in lower half of the channel. Results show the influence of non-dimensional parameters in the free region friction factor. In geral, it is observed that the friction factor decreases when porosity or Bingham number are increased and number of obstacles, Reynolds number or power law index are lowered. Moreover, it is porposed the application of the fluid-porous interface model proposed by Ochoa-Tapia e Whitaker (1995b) to the flow of power law fluids by varying the stress jump coefficient with the power law index.

Full textThis thesis is devoted to the modeling and numerical methods for the simulation of non-Newtonian flows, and focuses particularly on granular materials flows. This work is applied to molten powders aiming to ensure metal thermal protection from the air in ingot casting process of metallic alloys. These powders are conditionned into bags disposed into the mold, which burn due to high temperatures, and allowing the powder spreading onto the metal surface. Thus, numerical simulation appears as a powerful tool for the process optimization, and especially, for the powder spreading. In this work, a finite element formulation has been proposed for the modeling of granular multiphase flows, by a continuum approach. The associated equations are solved using stabilized numerical schemes, coupled with the Level-Set method to capture and follow the granular profile during the simulation. First, the numerical tools have been implemented for Bingham flows, by using regularization a method. Then, the formulation was extended to dry granular flows, by the use of the mu(I) rheology constitutive model for describing its pressure-dependent behavior. The model has been validated on granular collapses, and a sensitivity analysis to boundary conditions and physical constants has been proposed. Finally, industrial cases of powder chutes ontoboth solid and liquid metla substrates have been conducted, leading to preliminary solutions for the optimization of ingot casting process

Full textThis thesis is devoted to the mathematical analysis of heterogeneous models raised by fluid mechanics. In particular, it is devoted to the theoretical study of partial differential equations used to describe the three main models that we present below.Initially, we are interested to study the motion of a compressible newtonienfluids in a basin with degenerate topography. The mathematical model studied derives from incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We are interested to prove that the Cauchy problem associated is well posed. Well-posedness means that there exists a solution, that it is unique. In the meantime, we prove that the solution of the viscous model converges to the one of the inviscid limit model when the viscosity coe cient tends to zero. The second part in my thesis is devoted to study a model that arises from dispersive Navier-Stokes equations (that includes dispersive corrections to the classical compressible Navier-Stokes equations). Our model is derived from the last model assuming that the Mach number is very low. The obtained system is a Ghost eect system, which is so named because it can be derived from Kinetic theory. The main goal of this part is to extend a result concerning the local existence of strong solution to a global-in time existence of weak solutions. The main ingredient in this work is a new functional inequality of Log-Sobolev type. The last part of my thesis is a part of a research theme intends to analyze the understanding of phenomena encountered in geophysics which involves granular media. The mathematical model is of Bingham incompressible type with viscosity and placticity depending on the pressure. We provide a global existence of weak solutions of the Cauchy problem associated

Full textThis thesis is devoted to the flow of yield stress (or viscoplastic) fluids in pipes.Analytical and numerical difficulties lie in the multivaluation of the stress tensor in the plastic regions and in the non-differentiability of the associated minimization problem. This manuscript is organized following two main axes.First, very accurate numerical simulations were carried out using duality methods and parallel multifrontal solvers. Thus, experimental observations were recovered, namely the existence of a slip line for the flow over an obstacle and the Poiseuille-like behaviour of the velocity above this line. Moreover, the viscoplastic boundary layer theory defined by Oldroyd (1947 at high Bingham numbers) was revisited at moderate Bingham numbers in confined areas. This study provided an opportunity to go back and forth between these simulations and the physical measures of Luu et al. from IRSTEA and to perform a theoretical derivation. The boundary layer approximation is valid up to a certain extent in the cavity. An adaptation of the viscoplastic boundary layer definition is then given and allows to generalize the scalings shown by Oldroyd (1947) and Balmforth et al. (JFM 2017). These scalings are also generalized to the Herschel-Bulkley case. Then, an asymptotic analysis of the velocity and stress fields for thin layer (ε) flows is presented. A velocity development up to ε2 lets us find a Reynolds equation of same accuracy. This Reynolds equation extends the already existing results, on the one hand in the newtonian case and on the second hand for free surface flows

Full textThis thesis deals with the study of the influence of the water variations in the concrete-formwork interface. The proposed approach is intended to analyze two aspects. • The role of the concrete mixing formulation, and the casting procedures on the finished mortar surface. • The movement of water in concrete formwork interface. Firstly, we search to confirm the phenomenological results on the relationship between the luminance of the concrete surface and its roughness, this last being governed by the local W/C ratio in the formwork interface. This relationship will be established for compositions of modern concrete. After, we will examine the role of operational factors on the granular segregation on the mortar surface and their consequences on the bleeding of the specimens, on the water movements as well as on the color of the surface. Parameters : Formulation parameters : granular composition, G/S, S/G, W/C ratio and admixtures Parameters of implementation: Temperature and relative humidity, vibration, waiting time, type of formwork, release agents. Maturation parameters: temperature, relative humidity, form release deadline and carbonation

Full textWe present a contribution about modeling of viscoplastic flows. For realistic applications such as numerical simulation of volcanic lava flows, the work focuses particularly on complex fluids whose rheology strongly depends on physical quantities such as temperature or the particle concentration. We develop a new numerical resolution algorithm of Herschel-Bulkley's equations combining an augmented Lagrangian method with variable augmentation parameter, a second order characteristic method and an auto-adaptive mesh procedure. On stationary or evolving problems as the lid-driven cavity flow benchmark, it provides an effective solution to ensure both a high numerical accuracy within a reasonable computing time. This algorithm is then extended and adapted to the case of non-isothermal rheological and suspensions. On the numerical simulation of volcanic lava flows, we describe a method of reducing by asymptotic analysis of the Herschel-Bulkley's equations for thin flows on arbitrary topography. It allows to describe the three-dimensional flows of viscoplastic fluid with free surface by bidimensional surface equations. This approach is then extended to the non-isothermal case by adding the heat equation and thermal dependencies on rheology. By vertical integration of the heat equation, a two-dimensional model is maintained . The non-isothermal model is validated on a laboratory experiment of dome and a numerical simulation is performed on a December 2010 Piton de la Fournaise lava flow from La Réunion island. In our view, the comparison gives satisfactory and encouraging results

Full textDuring these three years, I enjoyed to work with collaborators from volcanology, laboratory physics and mathematics. This document presents the steps and results of my research in the field of modelling of fluidised granular flows. The last consists in the development of a new mathematical model and its theoretical and numerical study. Based on observations made on experimental studies, the model focuses on the change in the behaviour of an initially fluidised granular flow through the definition of its viscoplastic rheology with variable threshold. More precisely, the threshold (aslo called yield stress) is defined via the difference between the lithostatic pressure and the pressure of the interstitial fluid. The innovation of this model opens perspectives for the mathematical research as well as for the study of fluidised granular flows and their application to volcanology. From a mathematical point of view, a theoretical study has been conducted. Proving the existence of weak solution for the homogeneous version of the model, we offer an extension in the field of knowledges of non-newtonian fluid flows. Also, we have developped a numerical code to simulate dambreak experiments with fluidised granular media. This one includes a new method to solve the flow equations of viscoplastic fluids. In this thesis, I describe and justify the numerical strategy chosen. Moreover, I present some academic tests to validate the code. At the end, I give the numerical results in the case of the dambreak simulation for dry and fluidised fluids. By comparing with experimental data, we evaluate the validity of the model and its resolution, and highlight the advantages and inconvenients. To conclude the project, I propose some perspectives of improvement for later work

Full textThis work is an experimental and numerical study of aqueous foam flow inside a horizontal square duct, with and without flow disruption devices (fdd). It is especially devoted to determine the pertinent parameters of the flow: longitudinal pressure losses, velocity fields of foam flow near the walls, liquid film thickness (thick and thin), and the wall shear stress evolution, for an aqueous foam with a void fraction range between 55 and 85%, for a mean foam flow velocity of 2, 4 and 6 cm/s. Once they were determined, inside the horizontal channel, we carried out measurements over different geometries: half-sudden expansion, vertical fence and foam flow around a cylinder. The goal was to study the foam flow reorganization to well understand the rheological behavior of aqueous foam flow in the vicinities of different fdd. Finally, a numerical simulation (CFD), using the Bingham behavior model of non-Newtonian fluid, was undertaken to test its capacity to represent the aqueous foam flow inside the horizontal duct with flow disruption devices. First of all, we verified the static longitudinal pressure evolution, which varies linearly upstream and downstream far from the fdd. The singular pressure loss remains constant for a given mean foam velocity and a foam quality (void fraction). From the Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) technique (2D), we determined the two velocity components in the immediate vicinities of the disruption devices. They allowed us to put into evidence the different foam flow regimes and to observe the foam flow reorganization and rheological behavior through the studied fdd. The slip-layer thickness analysis, obtained using the conductimetry method, shows that the wall presents a liquid film thick enough to apply an electrochemical technique (polarography). Thus, the polarographic signals, obtained for the foam flow, present important fluctuations. They were compared to the wall shear stress deducted from the measurement of pressure losses, showing a good similarity between them. The numerical study (CFD), carried out for aqueous foam flow with a void fraction of 70% and a mean foam flow velocity of 2 cm/s, shows that the Bingham rheological model can be adapted to this kind of aqueous foam flow which is flowing like a block

Full textThis thesis deal with the use of projection methods for incompressible viscoplastic flows with a variable density. This manuscript is organized following three main lines. The first part is devoted to the mathematical model, the time-discretization of the model and the analysis of the numerical scheme. To construct the numerical scheme, on one side we adapt a time-stepping method already used for newtonian flows to viscoplastic flows and on the other side, we use a projection formulation of the stress tensor to solve the coupling between the velocity and the plastic part of the stress tensor in the momentum equation with an Uzawa-like method. Stability and error analysis of the numerical scheme are provided and a first-order estimate of the time error is derived for the velocity field, the density, the viscosity and the yield stress. The second part is devoted to the space discretization and the implementation of the scheme. A second-order cell-centred finite volume scheme on staggered grids is applied for the spatial discretization. The implementation of the numerical scheme has been performed using a Fortran 90 code and using the PetsC and MPI library The last part of the manuscript is devoted to numerical simulations. In the Rayleigh-Taylor instability configuration, we perform simulations by varying the yield stress, and describing the evolution of the interface and the localization of the rigid zones. In the dambreak configuration, we use Stick-Slip boundary conditions and we compare our results to the existing literature

Debris flow disaster has become one of the major reasons for slope land disaster. If the debris bed has enough shear stress, it will carry more sediments and cause damages to downstream area. According to different moisture and grain size, debris flow has many categories. We chose one of the categories which called mud fluids to do research, and used Bingham fluid model to describe the flow characteristics. In this study, we let the bed of sloping channel has one step geometry shape. One layer of saturated mud fluid which defined as fluid 2 was fully deposited in the rectangular cavity of step, the height of deposit and cavity is the same so could be regarded as an arbitrary deposit region. Next we let another layer of mud fluid came from upstream channel which defined as fluid 1. When it contact with fluid 2, if the shear stress below fluid 1 is strong enough, fluid 2 will be carried. So according to the characteristics of yield stress of Bingham fluid model, the whole research region could be separated to three layers. From up to down direction ( free surface to channel bed direction) : plug layer of fluid 1、shear layer of fluid 1、shear layer of fluid 2. In addition, we assume fluid and fluid both have different characteristics and rheology. Because the different density can cause density stratification, we also suppose the fluid and fluid will not be blended. We used the two dimensional, unsteady , nonuniform, imcompressible continuity and momentum equations with long wave theory to do derivation、dimensional analysis、normalization and numerical calculation. Afterward, analyzed the interaction between fluid and fluid , and the flow situation after fluid 2 be carried. The major purpose is to find out the change of free surface and (fluid 1/ fluid 2)interface with time and space, and the influence from other parameters.

To predict mud flow rheological property, the rheological parameters of a Bingham fluid are verified with empirical data in this paper. In our experiment, kaolinite suspension is chosen to be the experimental material. The design of the experiment serves the assumption and boundary conditions of the analytical solutions developed in both steady and unsteady state. Moreover, we quantify the end effect in experiment way, and we derive the verification formulas of rheological parameters with analytical solutions. After verifying the data from our rheological experiment, two different groups of rheological parameters can be obtained. One of them is obtained with the equilibrium data calculated by the steady verification formula and so-called the steady state rheological parameters. In the contrast, the other group is verified with transient data by the unsteady verification formula, and the parameters in this group are time-dependent, yet still being steady state rheological parameter. Subsequently, we discuss the discrepancies of the equilibrium time of the rheological parameters verified in different verification formula. The rheological parameters verified with transient data by unsteady verification formula can convergent with the steady state parameters faster, when the concentration of the kaolinite suspension is higher.
