Abstract:
Since the early 1990s, Iraqi Kurds have been relocating to the greater Binghamton area in New York State. This study focuses on the growing diasporic Kurdish community in and around Binghamton and their quest to imagine the homeland they left behind as a result of social, economic, and political hardships. The production of this diasporic space has emerged as an attempt to reconstruct their culture and collective identity in the absence of physical and territorially specific aspects of their homeland. Kurdish refugee narratives articulate how collective memory gives voice to the shared Kurdish past, how Kurdish refugees appropriated the space according to their traditional example and kinship structure, and how memories and narratives of the past shape the migrants’ identities, kinship, and everyday practices. The production of diasporic space within the imaginations of these refugees is portrayed here to show their attempt to reconstruct Kurdish culture while lacking the physical characteristics of their homeland. Their successfully reinvented images of homeland and reconstructed culture in diaspora are evidence of the resilience and fluidity of Kurdish culture.

Abstract:
This paper presents the development of a neural network model of the server temperature to be used in model-based control of a data center. Data centers provide the optimal environments for operation of servers and storage devices. Conventionally, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to model the dynamic and complex environment of the data center. However, the drawback of this approach is its computational inefficiency. The effects of changing a single input may take an entire day to compute. Thus the CFD model is not well suited for model-based control. Instead, we propose to use an artificial Neural Network (NN) model which predicts server temperatures in significantly less time. In addition, this NN model has the capability of learning the environment in the data center by adapting its parameters in real time based on sensor data continuously taken from the data center. This work discusses the current development of the neural network, work being done at the University of Texas at Arlington, to include modeling of transient conditions, or time related changes, using data generated in a test bed Data Center at SUNY Binghamton.

Abstract:
Collection budgets are an essential tool for building collections yet the amounts of allocations can ebb and flow over the years. Modifying the budget structure is an intimidating, exhausting exercise with administrative and political ramifications that affect the workload of collections librarians as well as the workflows in acquisitions departments. External and internal forces such as impending budget cuts and serials reviews, a new library system, new department heads, newly minted librarians’ learning curves, and the creation or demolition of big deals seem like roadblocks to a budget revision process. They can also be seized as opportunities to look at new models. Libraries get by with the allocations provided in any given year, but would it be better for the collections if the approach to allocations was more flexible from the beginning, more of a proactive allocation instead of reactive? At Binghamton University Libraries, the hiring of a new Head of Collection Development and migrating to a new library system necessitated collaborative conversations concerning structures and roles for the two departments. This paper presents scenarios and recommendations for determining when and how to collaboratively evaluate a legacy budget structure, redefine allocations, and review staff roles.
