Texture is an important cue in vision and has been analysed in its own right for the last three decades by researchers in psychophysics as well as computer vision and image processing. The three important early vision roles that texture analysis can play include texture classification, texture description and texture segmentation, all of which are pre-requisites for higher levels of analysis namely image interpretation and understanding. It is well known that colour can aid the human vision system in the analysis of many visual phenomena like shape, motion and texture. This notion coupled with

Understanding the motion of a camera from only the image(s) it captures is a di cult problem. At best we might hope to estimate the relative motion between camera and scene if we assume a static subject, but once we start considering scenes with dynamic content it becomes di cult to di↵erentiate between motion due to the observer or motion due to scene movement. In this thesis we show how the invaluable cues provided by inertial sensor data can be used to simplify motion analysis and relax requirements for several computer vision problems. However, in many engineering processes the key quality variables cannot be measured directly with standard sensors. Inferential sensing is the real-time prediction of such variables from other, measurable process variables through some form of model.
