Wången is a trotting school located in Alsen region in Mid Sweden. Currently they keep almost 105 horses in their premises, which produce 2 400 m3 of stall waste per year.  Stall waste has always been a concern for those who keep animals, and though composting has been a viable solution to this problem for quite some time, it is no longer the only solution. Stall waste can be converted to energy and there are different techniques and approaches to do so.  In this study the writer compares the viability of two possible techniques (Biogas and heating plant) by collecting data from two existing b

Harvesting solar energy can potentially be a promising solution to the energy crisis now and in the future. However, material and processing costs continue to be the most important limitations for the commercial devices. A key solution to these problems might lie within the development of bio-hybrid solar cells that seeks to mimic photosynthesis to harvest solar energy and to take advantage of the low material costs, negative carbon footprint, and material abundance. The bio-photoelectrochemical cell technologies exploit biomimetic means of energy conversion by utilizing plant-derived photosys

The move from fossil fuels is getting more relevant throughout the globe, mainly for it getting more costly to emit CO$_2$. The steel industry is one of the biggest contributor of the CO$_2$ emissions, and is therefore very motivated to reduce their emissions. One way to reduce the emissions is to go from coal to bio-char as a reducing agent. BEST(Bio-energy and sustainable technologies) is a research institute in Austria, and have been tasked to do research on bio-char and what problems that may occur with changing from coal to bio-char. One problem with bio-char is that it is prone to self i

Abstract:
The use of wood for energy has grown in the last years as an alternative to fossil fuels. National and international laws promote the use of wood in the policies for the mitigation of climate change, based on the assumption that wood has a neutral carbon balance because the combustion emissions are offset by the absorption in forest (assumption of carbon neutrality). However, this assumption does not take into account the emissions associated with the life cycle of the product, e.g. related to processing and transporting biomass. In addition there is a time lag between the release of CO2 duri

IF1, the endogenous inhibitor protein of mitochondrial F1Fo-ATPase, has raised interest in cancer research due to its overexpression in solid tumours compared to normal tissues. Physiologically, IF1 protects cells from energy depletion by limiting the ATP hydrolytic activity of ATP synthase triggered by mitochondrial depolarization caused by oxygen deficiency as it occurs during ischemic episodes. Considering both the physiological function of IF1 and that cancer cells in solid tumour are frequently exposed to oxygen deprivation, we hypothesized that IF1 overexpression represents a strategy th

Enviromental and nutritional stimuli can affect chromatin modifications. Several evidences highlighted the role of epigenetics in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Among the epigenetic modifications, the acetylation/deacetylation of histone tails it has been associated to metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes that are often linked with defects in oxidative metabolism. In this doctorate thesis it has been investigated the effect of the selective inhibition of class I histone deacetylases (HDACs) in metabolic profile and functionality of key organs participating in energy metaboli
