A wide variety of silica based nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesised to engineer materials with properties for specific applications by manipulating the nanoparticle composition. These include luminescent core shell NPs and luminescent mesoporous silica which have been successfully synthesised. The particle size distribution and characteristics of the NPs were determined by photon correlation spectroscopy. The laser Doppler velocimetry was used to determine the NPs stability in suspension. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy analysis were used to assess morphology and size of the NPs.

The first part summaries the theory of QDs, their synthesis, functionalization, interactions and applications in medicine. In the second part synthesis of CdTe/ZnS core/shell QDs modified by glutathione (GSH) is described, followed by the conjugation with biomolecules BSA and IgG. Nanostructured thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering and gas aggregation sources of nanoparticles are studied especially with regards to their use in biomedical applications. The possibility of using plasma polymers for the preparation of antibacterial coatings is tested first. It is presented that sputtered nylon 6,6 films may be impregnated by antibiotics. The aim of this thesis was the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials and their composites for environmental applications, application as an antibacterial agent, and crop protection. As the basic constituent of all prepared nanomaterials, graphene oxide (GO) prepared by the modified Hummers method was successfully used.
