Abstract:
Background. The human eye is a complex organ whose anatomy and functions has been described very well to date. Unfortunately, the knowledge of the biochemistry and metabolic properties of eye tissues varies. Our objective was to reveal the biochemical differences between main tissue components of human eyes.Methods. Corneas, irises, ciliary bodies, lenses, and retinas were obtained from cadaver globes 0-1/2 hours postmortem of 6 male donors (age: 44–61 years). The metabolic profile of tissues was investigated with HR MAS1H NMR spectroscopy.Results. A total of 29 metabolites were assigned in th

The aim of this study was to assess eye pain between dry eye (DE) subtypes using questionnaires and the PainVision® (Osachi) apparatus. This study involved 52 eyes of 52 DE patients with eye pain (43 females and 9 males; mean age: 64.2 ± 13.2 (mean ± SD) years) who were classified into three DE subtypes (aqueous deficient DE (ADDE); decreased wettability DE (DWDE); and increased evaporation DE (IEDE)) based on fluorescein breakup pattern. In all subjects, severity of eye pain was evaluated using PainVision®, the DE-symptom-questionnaire visual analog scale (DSQ-VAS), and the Short-Form McGill

Abstract:
The ciliary body (CB) of the vertebrate eye is located in the peripheral region of the retina and is involved in lens accommodation and production of aqueous humor. The CB develops from the ciliary margin (CM) where non-neural epithelial tissue differentiates from the neural ectoderm during embryonic development. The CM/CB represents an interesting area of study since the pigmented layer of the CM is reported to accommodate a pool of adult retinal stem cells. In fish and amphibians, these stem cells facilitate retinal growth and replenishment although this has yet to be observed in the mammali

Abstract:
Ocular diseases cause vision deficiency and blindness in a substantial number of people in the world every day. Therefore, a controlled and sustained system of drug delivery to a specific spot within the eye is of interest for the ophthalmology community. The unique and complicated anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the eye make this organ highly resistant to drug delivery systems. The major challenge is to improve the efficiency of each treatment method along with avoiding the invasive techniques which damage the eye’s protective barrier tissues. In this work we make a computer model fo
