This thesis explores a holistic design process through which architectural elements can engage the dynamic forces of natural phenomena and integrate the spatial and temporal experience of building form with its physical environment. The framework for this exploration is a contextual mapping of dynamical systems and complexity theory to the processes of architectural design. By incorporating concepts and methods from the study of non-linear dynamics, a broad base of scientific knowledge aimed at understanding physical behavior in nature, this thesis proposes a synthetic relationship between architectural elements, their physical performance in the context of natural phenomena, and their contribution to a coherent spatial structure. Modern technological imperatives have rephrased the sensible relationships between architecture, climate, and inhabited space as a problem for "environmental controls". The contemporary urban office building, under economic pretenses, exhibits a particular over-dependence on external machinery for light, ventilation, and thermal comfort, often to the detriment of physical experience. This thesis emphasizes the use of scientific knowledge and computational tools in the early processes of design in an attempt to investigate the manifestations of physical energy -- light, air, and heat --in the building's final form. By addressing these physical performance criteria as spatial influences during preliminary design, this thesis supports an integrated framework for professional collaboration and examines a cultural context for the application of architectural knowledge. A bioclimatic approach to design, therefore, is a synthetic response to the dialectic between the tectonics of physical experience and the dynamics of the natural environment.

Abstract: Climate is a set of climatic variables which, depending on the force with which they act, can affect the bioclimate of a region. It is therefore necessary for the Building and Comfort area to know beforehand the climate of a region, so as to provide comfortable buildings by leveraging the natural energy potential of the environment around the architecture project. This work presents a bioclimaticzoning project for Bolivia, using as a reference the building adaptations made by Bolivian vernacular architecture in response to the zones' climates. This was divided into two steps: first, collecting data (climate normais) on temperature and humidity of 72 places in Boliviaand 18 places in neighbouring countries, along with two interpolated databases: altitude and climatic normais for the entire planeI. To complement spacially the climatic data, we used an interpolation process called Arithmetic Mean of Neighbouring Points, which allowed us to create a new database of the Bolivianterritory. Then these data were fed again to the ~BC (Architectural Bioclamatic Classification) software, which resulted in the defining of eight bioclimaticzones. In the second step, from the examples of vernacular architecture found and the climatic normals obtained from their sites, these data was fed to the ABC software and to the Adapted Mahoney Tables, in order to quantify and classify the necessary bioclimatic strategies so as to make an analogy with the architectural correction parameters used by the native constructors. We noticed a strong relation between bioclimatic recomendations of the determined zones and the vernacular building solutions. Therefore the resulting bioclimatic zoning can serve as a guide in choosing the bioclimatic strategies and contribute to the internal thermal performance of buildings

Full textWith its rich history, the traditional building in the Mediterranean Basin reflects the socio-cultural needs for which it was built: environmental needs interact and overlap, determining cyclic typological and constructive solutions in urban areas. The architectural solutions of the historic Mediterranean building have remarkable formal, structural and functional qualities and, thanks to their ability to adapt to the local climate context, they also guarantee a good level of internal environmental comfort. The need to reduce energy consumption in the construction field leads today towards the research of innovative solutions that combine experimentation on new materials and technologies and the re-appropriation of knowledge and principles of ‘traditional’ architecture in a dense environment.Moving from these considerations, and taking into account the interactions between the elements of the frame and all the factors involved in determining the internal user’s comfort in traditional buildings in the Mediterranean Region, we asked the following questions: can we recover lost or forgotten technical know-how to answer the current problems of reduction of buildings energy consumption? How to reinterpret certain peculiar aspects of traditional buildings with contemporary technologies and materials? What design tools are needed? We wanted to reconstruct a model of traditional architecture by focusing on a particular city, Palermo, due to its ability to illustrate the evolution of a Mediterranean metropolis through its historical phases; in all subsystems - city, building, component - we find the idea of transmission with implicit qualities of permanence, inheritance, repetition and durability. This choice also allows us to define our field of research without getting lost in the multitude of possible variables. Based on past and current scientific research, along with numerical calculations, we will try to evaluate the energy performance of this architecture, often considered as an empirical form of ‘bioclimatic’ architecture. The knowledge of the thermal behaviour of this building represents a pivotal preparatory phase in order to propose design tools for the modelling and thermal evaluation of innovative technological systems, capable of reinterpreting certain aspects of traditional architecture with the introduction of materials or contemporary techniques

ABSTRACT: The current disconnect between the buildings and its surroundings has contributed to an exponential increase in energy consumption and dependence on mechanical climate systems. In the current context, the concepts used in bioclimatic architecture can be potential allies in a rehabilitation action, which arises from a desire to change paradigms, returning to a type of construction that fits in its location, taking advantage of the specificities of the climate. and the environmental characteristics of the region. Having as its implantation area a ruined building, in the walled core of the city of Lagos, Faro District, it is proposed to reach an economically and environmentally viable solution for the construction of a Boutique hotel. It seeks to understand to what extent the principles of bioclimatic architecture can contribute to the improvement of the thermal conditions of the building, how they can help to reduce energy consumption.
