Under the global change scenario, it is increasingly important to monitor habitat and ecosystem attributes to prevent their loss and degradation. While different approaches have been proposed to achieve this goal, little effort has been devoted in linking the monitoring of habitat attributes with the ecosystem services provided. The present research was aimed at filling this gap by assessing the relationship between environmental and biotic attributes of grassland communities and the provisioning of four ecosystem services (i.e., biodiversity, productivity, climate regulation and pollination).

Caddisflies (Trichoptera) were collected from over 500 different locations throughout the Interior Highlands (Ozark, Ouachita, Arbuckle, and Wichita Mountains) between March 1990 and March 1994. Cultural developments of environmentalism provide the social context for WCNs, informing trends in participation and conflict. The recent growth of low-density urban developments in the Mediterranean coast has led to an increase in the number of private domestic gardens. This thesis examines the flora, features and management practices of 258 private gardens in the Alt Empordà region in Catalonia. We also calculated water requirements of gardens based on species composition and land cover, and determined whether they can be predicted from the socioeconomic, demographic and cultural characteristics of households. A subset of 199 Melissotarsus insularis and 130 Diaspididae specimens were analyzed to 1) determine the species status of M. insularis and 2) to explore the relative intimacy of the relationship between M. insularis and Diaspididae.
