Abstract:
In this report, we focus on Biofluids problems, specifically the Stokes Equation. The method of regularized Stokeslets can be derived from bound- ary integral equations derived from the Lorentz reciprocal identity. When body forces are known, this is a direct numerical approximation of an in- tegral, resulting in a summation to determine the fluid velocity. In certain cases, which this report is focused on, we know the velocity and want to determine the forces on a structure immersed in a fluid. This results in a lin- ear system Af = u, where A is a square dense matrix. We study different meth

Abstract:

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the combination of experimental and computational methods in the search for reproducible colloidal surface-enhanced Raman scattering of pharmaceutical compounds. In the search for optimal experimental conditions for colloidal surface-enhance Raman scattering, the amphipathic β-blocker propranolol was used as the target molecule. Fractional factorial designs of experiments were performed and a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm was used to find acceptable solutions, from the results, that were Pareto ranked. The multiobjective evolutionary

Atherogenesis is the leading cause of death in the developed world, and is putting considerable monetary pressure on health systems the world over. Although the risk factors are well understood, unfortunately, the initiation and development of this disease still remains relatively poorly understood, but it is becoming increasingly identifiable as a dysfunction of the endothelial cells that line the walls of arteries. The prevailing haemodynamic environment plays an important role in the focal nature of atherosclerosis to very specific regions of the human vasculature. Disturbed haemodynamics l

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the mechanics of the Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), the most widely used temporary cardiac assist device, whose beneficial action is based on the principle of counterpulsation. The investigation is carried out in vitro in increasingly more realistic setups, including a mock circulatory system with physiological distribution of peripheral resistance and compliance in which IABP counterpulsation was simulated. Pressure and flow measurements show the effect of variables such as intra-luminal pressure, angle and aortic compliance on balloon hemodynamics. These data are co
