Full textDelivery and handling of putrescible organic matter in biomethanization facilities produce bioaerosols, suspending microorganisms found in the raw matter, which may vary in nature and decomposition state. Workers in biomethanization facilities are exposed to these microorganisms, some of which may be harmful to their health. Nowadays, biomethanization is used as a method of waste processing and valorization. To our knowledge, there is no study mentioning the presence of bioaerosols in these emerging facilities in the Quebec province. Consequently, there is a need to study the air of biomethanization facilities to better understand its composition in microorganisms. Two facilities were visited once in summer and once in winter for a total of 4 visits. The goal was to consider the seasonal variation of working conditions. Stationary sampling was performed with six devices used for culture of airborne microorganisms and molecular analysis. Bacterial and fungal concentrations above the IRSST recommendations were observed. qPCR lead to the detection of some potentially pathogenic microorganisms, such as Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, Legionella spp. and Mycobacterium spp. The endotoxin concentrations were below the recommended value. Finally, a better view of bacterial diversity was possible due to next-generation sequencing. Because biomethanization is an emerging waste treatment technology, this study brings a major contribution to the literature. It may also lead to recommendations for the protection of workers in this activity area.

Full textOur doctoral research deals with the integration of business in global health governance in the case of the fight against HIV/AIDS and neglected diseases. We use an approach at the crossroad between a sociology of international relations and a sociology of global public policy. We argue that during the 20th century, business evolves from a position at the periphery of the global health governance system to a position at the center of the system, integrated through relationships with other actors. It is a gradual process, during which businesses play a diverse range of roles. This integration process is also characterized by an institutionalization of business participation, through the creation of new organizational forms and new market-based cooperation mechanisms. The dissertation is divided into six chapters. They follow a global historical development, which is not strictly linear but retraces the integration of business in the international health system and its governance structure. The first three chapters highlight the different roles played by corporations and the beginning of the dynamics of integration with the building of ad hoc collaborations. The last three chapters analyze the structural changes which allow a deepening of the integration of business and the creation of new forms and new mechanisms of cooperation

Full textThe regeneration of Cleaning In Place (CIP) solutions is interesting, both economically and environmentally, especially in dairy industry. The CIP’s key step lies on the alkaline washing which ensures the removal of organic contaminants deposited on the equipment. This washing is generally done by soda lyes, less expensive than potash ones. Our work aimed to apply a physicochemical regeneration process, based on adsorption-coagulation-flocculation phenomena, on potash lyes to make their integration in the dairy CIP affordable. The regeneration of potash solutions soiled with milk was examined and compared with the soda solutions regeneration. The process effectiveness to purify potash solutions in terms of COD and TN reduction has been shown. The solutions analysis has also highlighted the improvement of their interfacial properties (surface tension, contact angle). These properties, whose origin was attributed to the accumulation of biosurfactants, confer to potash regenerated solutions a best cleaning power. This point was validated during cleaning assays of organic ultrafiltration membranes fouled by milk proteins. The optimization of solutions formulation has also enabled obtaining a cleaning performance as efficient as those of a commercial detergent largely used for this type of application. Finally, economic and environmental impacts of the potash lyes integration in substitution to soda ones were evaluated for dairy industrial CIP through a techno-economic analysis and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Full textBeyond economic (due to trade liberalisation), scientific (due to uncertain risks involved) and legal boundaries (due to soft law instruments), is the international legal framework for transboundary movements pertaining to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), adequate for the protection of human and animal health as well as environmental protection, content-wise and in its implementation? The content of this framework is incomplete with direct and indirect legal instruments. In order to fill in the gaps for a better governance of transboundary movements of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), it is of utmost importance to regulate additional categories of transboundary movement of GMOs and to devise a harmonised system of identification, traceability and labelling. A three-pronged international system of “bioalertness” is highly recommended, with the need for a harmonised risk assessment system, an effective risk management system and a harmonised system of communication of information on biotechnological risks. The legal framework pertaining to transboundary movements of GMOs is limited in its effects, in as much as there is no liability regime for the reparation of damages resulting from transboundary movements of GMOs since the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Additionnal Protocol targets only damages resulting from LMOs and it still has to be ratified by States Parties and enter into force. Its implementation is limited to the extent that there is a lack of consensus on the approaches, implementation and dispute resolution procedures. In this context, the setting-up of a collective system of compensation or a compensation fund as well as an insurance regime are a must, to be able to indemnify potential victims and repair environmental damage resulting from transboundary movements of GMOs
