Abstract:

Gogol’s legacy itself is the most important document of the era. It is precisely because of its importance that a sharp ideological struggle unfolded around Gogol’s works immediately after their publication. The struggle for Gogol’s legacy continued after his death, not only in criticism, but also in the memoirs dedicated to him. The article analyzes the apocryphal features in the memoirs of Gogol by S.T. Aksakov, P.V. Annenkov, A.T. Tarasenkov, in biographical works about Gogol by P.A. Kulish, V.I. Shenrok and others. Based on the study of the entire corpus of memoirs and testimonies about Gogol by his contemporaries, published in 2011–2013, and replenished in 2017–2018, a number of sources of lesser and dubious, in comparison with others, reliability are identified and characterized. All Gogol memoirists had, in one way or another, their own interest, which did not always coincide with the desire to convey the true appearance of the writer. However, in some cases, the subjective intentions of the author led to a distortion of the true appearance of the writer. Among such reasons, ideological preferences of memoirists belonging to various liberal opposition trends (Westernism, Slavophilism, Ukrainophilism, etc.), as well as the corporate interests of the medical class, are noted as the most important.

…IN THE DARK ROOM, IN THE CITY OF WROCŁAW. CZESŁAW MIŁOSZ AND HIS WROCŁAW EPISODE The essay is focused on the Wrocław episode in the life and work of Czesław Miłosz. In 1949 Miłosz spent a few days in Wrocław, which was still in ruins after the war. Six years later, in 1955, Miłosz wrote an interesting poem entitled Pokój (The Room) and gave a symbolical vision of post-war, heavily destroyed Wrocław. The article concerns the probable connection between the biographical experience form 1949 and the textual creation from 1955. It also compares the pessimistic images of Wrocław in Miłosz’s poem and in the private diary of Anna Kowalska. This comparison reveals the unexpected convergences between the two separated ways of the perception of the city.

This chapter begins, from a religious reference in the ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, to explore Keats’s experience of home and belonging. It develops a close reading of the Ode, by developing comparison with Yeats’s ‘Sailing to Byzantium’, and through discussion of related texts including works by Hazlitt, Malthus, and Burke. Keats’s own lack of Christian belief, and general absence of functional biblical reference in the poetry, is contrasted with his use of Anglican-derived imagery throughout the Odes. His unusual reference to the Book of Ruth in the Nightingale Ode is considered in light of the biographical reality of his restless short life, in which Keats enjoyed no settled personal home after childhood. These issues are related to the theme of immortality through the art of poetry.

Abstract:

An in-depth analysis of egodocumentary sources, which include the will, hides a huge amount of information from the researchers, but the historian must take into account the fact that the information contained in the sources is incomplete, sometimes doubtful, and sometimes completely false and biased. This is due not only to the bad will of the testators, but also the conditions in which this type of documents was created and the purpose it was intended to serve. Despite assurances of good mental state, the moribund were sometimes unaware of the content of their writings, which, after their death, became an occasion to question the validity of the wills. It happened that the testers forgot to mention the name of the wife or husband, the order of relationships, the number of children, not to mention the knowledge about the fate of adult offspring with whom they did not maintain contact for various reasons. Hence, all biographical data taken from this type of sources requires checking and comparison with other available material.

The subject of the research is the study of scientific researches of personalities, biographies and creative way of outstanding domestic scientists, scholars of Byzantium in the second half of the 19th – first half of the 20th century, who be-came the founders of Byzantine studies. Research methods. A system of theoretical and empirical research methods was used to study the specific purpose of scientific research and solving problems, namely: historical and pedagogical analysis and syn-thesis, definition of the purpose, subject and tasks, exploration, synthesis of abstrac-tion, comparison, generalization and analogy to clarify the peculiarities of the devel-opment of theoretical approaches underlying the renewal and expansion of the study of Byzantinists and their research on the specified topic; analysis of sources, as well as research materials with the subsequent synthesis of its results into a holistic system of views on this problem; personalistic and biographical method – for the analysis of historical, biographical, reference and encyclopedic literature devoted to historical and pedagogical personalities. The aim of the study is to present to modern historians and all those interested in studying the history of Byzantium, both in Ukraine and abroad, the names of prominent historians of the past and objectively evaluate their work and scientific results in terms of modern international scientific views and approaches. Conclusion. Personalized study of life and scientific and pedagogical heritage of professors and academics of Byzantine studies V. G. Vasilievsky, O. O. Vasiliev, V. E. Regel, Y. A. Kulakovsky, F. I. Uspensky, A. G. Gotalov-Gottlieb gave the opportunity to reveal their fundamental role in the development of domestic Byzantine studies, the establishment of their own scientific schools and areas in scientific and pedagogical activities, created scientific and educational literature on Byzantine history, medieval history and culture, national foreign research institutes, scientific societies, associations and more. The scholars in their monographs and textbooks gave a personal vision of the problem and an interpretation of the expediency and importance of studying the history and culture of Byzantium and the Middle Ages in general. V. G. Vasilievsky, O. O. Vasiliev, V. E. Regel, Y. A. Kulakovsky, F. I. Uspensky, A. G. Gotalova-Gotliba laid the foundation of the national scientific championship. Their names and works are our scientific pride "forgotten", "shot", destroyed or simply unknown today to the general public of modern scientists in Ukraine and abroad. Further research of publications and use of their works and textbooks could become a valuable source for modern researchers of Byzantine history, as well as a discovery and subject for acquaintance for modern foreign researchers.

Brief biographical information on Giovanni Battista Fontana precedes comparisons with his contemporaries, the emerging breed of professional violinist-composers. Notes on appropriate pitch and bow hold for this and the following sonatas are included. Although it is debatable to what extent the conventions of mensural notation and the tactus are applicable to the solo sonata, lengthy explanations of these topics are given, and there is also a section on tempo relationships and proportional notation. The transcription in modern notation is practical for the purpose of the book, but students are encouraged to learn to read the facsimile: more symbols are explained to that aim, and the controversial issue of coloration is discussed. The structure of the sonata is that of a palindrome. Knowledge gained from the previous three lessons is widely applied in the “Observations” section, with an exercise on understanding the time relationship between sections. Suggested ornamentation is mostly based on Rognoni.
