Abstract:
This thesis offers a close study of three sets of late Roman texts that are (auto)biographical in nature and concern the presentation of lives of pagan holy men, their spiritual quest and their personal encounters with the Divine. The thesis starts with an Introduction, where the aims of the study are defined, followed by three chapters that deal successively with 1) The Sacred Tales of Aelius Aristides 2) Philostratus' Life ofApollonius of Tyana 3) Neoplatonic biographical works, i. e., Porphyry's Life ofPlotinus and the Life of Pythagoras, Iamblichus' On the Pythagorean Way of Life, Eunapius' Lives of the Philosophers, Marinus' Life ofProclus, and Damascius' Philosophical History (also known as Life oflsidore). The main goal of the thesis is the elucidation of the theological content of the aforementioned (auto)biographical texts, which is based on a detailed examination of (a) the means used in the process of contacting the Divine or even achieving union with It; (b) the ways in which this contact or union takes place, given the psychological and spiritual conditioning of the seekers; (c) the effect that the phenomenon of union has both on the pagan holy men themselves and on their followers and their environment in general. In ordert o achievet he goal of the thesis,t he interpretationo f the sourcesc ombines (auto)biographya ndi ts religious/p hilosophicalb ackground:in otherw ords,t he theological content of each source is explicated in the light of its spiritual and intellectual foundations. This particular kind of analysis shows that the accounts of personal encounters with the Divine under study share -despite their differences- a number of similar elements or patterns (presented in an orderly way in the fourth, and concluding, chapter), hence revealing that certain features of Neoplatonic spirituality can be detected in earlier literary expressions of Graeco-Roman religious thought

Abstract:
Throughout the history of band music, works by women have received little, if any, acclaim. While some of the reasons for this lack of acknowledgment are grounded in the historical development of the band and the social restrictions of the times, an even greater problem has been the lack of reference sources concerning band works composed by women. Likewise, the works themselves are frequently unpublished. This study compiles a dictionary of American women composers who have written for band during the period from 1865 to 1996 and a catalogue of these works.The introduction presents a brief analysis of the status of the woman composer and her relationship with the historical development of the band tradition. A guide to the use of the dictionary outlines the decisions that were made in the compilation and presentation of the material. The actual dictionary includes entries for more than two hundred women who have composed at least one original composition for band. Each composer is represented by a biographical sketch including education; list of awards, honors, and grants; reference citations; and a catalogue of known band works. The list of works presents as much information as possible including title, year of composition and/or publication, level of difficulty, duration, and availability. Beyond the biographical entries, the 572 compositions for band composed by women are listed in the appendixes in four different formats: alphabetized by title of composition, alphabetized by composer's last name, listed by level of difficulty, and listed by year of composition or publication.Works range in difficulty from those that are intended for use with a beginner band, to compositions that were commissioned by the professional service bands of the United States. It is no surprise that the majority of these works were composed post-1970. The study makes no attempt to evaluate the musical value of any of the cited works, but rather is intended as an initial reference on the subject. It also raises several questions concerning the place of these works in the marketplace and in relation to other creative fields.<br>School of Music

Cette thèse contribue à la connaissance des débuts de la tradition Karma Bka’-brgyud du bouddhisme tibétain, un domaine n’ayant jusqu’i ici reçu qu’une attention universitaire limitée. Elle s’intéresse plus particulièrement à la vie et l’œuvre de l’un des pères fondateurs de cette tradition, le célèbre maître bouddhiste du XIIème siècle Dus-gsum-mkhyen-pa (Düsum Khyenpa). Sa biographie principale, le Gser gling, le « Monde doré », est un récit de son propre parcours de la voie du bodhisattva. Elle date du début du XIIIème siècle. Le Gser gling est un récit unique de la façon dont Düsum Khyenpa manifeste l’idéal du bodhisattva dans dix vies passées, dans sa vie XIIème siècle et dans trois incarnations futures. Le Gser gling combine la voie du bodhisattva et la biographie d’une manière inédite et est basé en grande partie sur les mots du maître. On peut noter également que le contenu du Gser gling correspond parfaitement à l’approche spécifique développée par le maître de Düsum Khyenpa, Sgam-po-pa. De plus, cette biographie comprend un récit inspirant de la façon dont Düsum Khyenpa, en tant que disciple, s’engage dans une relation d’apprentissage spirituel auprès de son maître Sgam-po-pa. Cette partie est constituée de « notes autobiographiques », Zhus lan 2, un « échange entre Sgam-po-pa et Düsum Khyenpa ». Ce texte décrit l’éveil de Düsum Khyenpa, qui est le but principal du chemin bouddhique. La thèse participe également à la connaissance d’un groupe d’œuvres spécifiques compilées au XVème siècle, que je nomme la « Collection de Düsum Khyenpa »<br>The dissertation contributes to an area of knowledge that to date has received limited attention, namely the Karma Bka’-brgyud tradition of Buddhism. Specifically, it adds new insights into the life and work of one of his founding fathers rge renowned 12th century Buddhist master Dus-gsum-mkhyen-pa (Düsum Khyenpa). The research suggest that his main goal was to embody the bodhisattva ideal in Buddhism, i.e. making progress in capabilities in order to guide sentient beings in general and one’s students in particular. His main biography, the Gser gling – “A Golden World” –, offers a record of his own journey on the bodhisattva path. The biography dates from the early thirteenth century. The Gser gling itself is a unique record of how Düsum Khyenpa manifests the bodhisattva ideal, through ten past lifetimes, his 12th century life, and three future lifetimes. The Gser gling combines bodhisattva path and biography in an unprecedented way, and is based in large on words of the master himself. The dissertation also presents his “autobiographical notes”, Zhus lan 2, “An Exchange between Sgam-po-pa and Düsum Khyenpa”. This Zhus lan 2 describes Düsum Khyenpa’s “Awakening”, which itself is the main goal on the Buddhist path. Furthermore, the dissertation adds knowledge to a specific 15th century untitled group of works, which I call the “Düsum Khyenpa Collection”. The dissertation explores this collection of very diverse scriptures that all, in one way or another, are related to Düsum Khyenpa

Abstract:
In recent years, researchers have pointed out that individuals understand their lives to a great extent through narratives and narration. In the field of adult education this idea has been taken up for instance in the concept of biographical learning. This thesis discusses the concept of biographical learning in relation to a research project on job loss in mid-life, as it is experienced and handled by whitecollar workers in a Swedish context. While much of the previous research on job loss and unemployment has focused on causes and effects, coping strategies and job search behaviour, this study suggests that an enforced work transition can be thought of as a biographical learning process. It also suggests that a greater diversity in the learning concept can be attained by reconsidering the concept in the framework of a pragmatist’s view of action. Analysing narrative interviews with white-collar workers (n=23), the study finds diversity in biographical learning with respect to the relative weights and characters of creative action and reflexive identity work. Individual’s variety of engagement in a work transition has also been understood by theoretically describing the process as structured by particular choice junctures. The study finds that a job loss during particular circumstances furthers reconsiderations, novel career decisions and ‘horizontal’ career moves. Being a central part of biographical learning, reflexivity is used in moments of evaluation, when people tell stories about the transition. It should be discussed in the plural, as the variety of evaluations implies a variety of reflexive efforts. Furthermore, it emphasizes that a work transition is a relational project, pointing out the significance of strong ties and formal ties to people who consider ‘horizontal’ career moves during a work transition. Altogether, this suggests that practical, existential, rhetorical as well as relational issues are involved in work transitions and biographical learning. Inom pedagogisk och utbildningssociologisk forskning har exempelvis begreppet biografisk lärande tagits i bruk för att visa hur människor tolkar, förstår och skapar mening i sina biografier genom självbiografiskt berättande. Denna avhandling diskuterar begreppet biografiskt lärande i relation till ett forskningsprojekt om omställningsprocesser efter uppsägning bland privat- och statsanställda tjänstemän. Medan tidigare forskning om uppsägning och arbetslöshet framför allt har intresserat sig för orsaker, effekter, copingprocesser och hur människor går till väga för att söka arbete, föreslås i denna avhandling att omställningsprocesser kan teoretisk förstås i termer av biografiskt lärande. I avhandlingen placeras begreppet i en handlingsteoretisk ram och utrymme skapas som gör det möjligt att tala om olika former av biografiskt lärande. Genom analys av narrativa intervjuer med personer som blivit uppsagda (n=23) föreslås att denna variation bland annat handlar om i vilken utsträckning och på vilket sätt människor engagerar sig i reflexivitet och kreativt handlande. Analysen visar också att variationen kan förstås med hänvisning till att människor under en omställning ställs inför vissa valsituationer och i samband därmed gör olika val. Studien visar att en uppsägning, under vissa betingelser, medverkar till kritisk reflektion och ”horisontella” karriärsteg. Avhandlingen diskuterar även begreppet reflexivitet som alltså är centralt för biografiskt lärande. I studien föreslås att reflexivitet bland annat utövas genom berättande, i det specifika moment då evaluering av det som berättelsen handlar om äger rum. Eftersom evaluering genomförs på olika sätt, bör man tala om reflexivitet i pluralis. Slutligen framhålls att omställning är en relationell process och att formella så väl som nära relationer har stor betydelse när människor överväger ”horisontella” karriärsteg. The objective of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Burnout Inventor for employees in a selected organization in South Africa. A purposive, non-probability sample was used (N = 365). The Burnout Inventory and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Exploratory factor analysis with target rotations confirmed the construct equivalence of the questionnaire. Two internally consistent factors, namely, Organisation and Work-context were extracted. Abstract:
This thesis argues for a full recognition of the significance of Elizabeth Carey and her literary works by offering new theoretical and critical approaches to her life and her two major works, The Tragedy of Mariam and The History of the Life, Reign and Death of Edward II. The Introduction offers an assessment of the recent critical works on Elizabeth Carey and ultimately rejects the prevalent tendency to interpret her works simply in terms of her life. Chapter 1 constitutes a biographical study of Elizabeth Carey which focuses upon the roles she played: as wife, recusant and writer. Chapter 2 examines Carey's use of two sources of "patriarchal" authority - Seneca and Flavius Josephus - in her composition of The Tragedy of Mariam. It explores the ways in which she manipulates these sources in order to create a text which offers resistance to patriarchal authority. Chapter 3 is a reading of The Tragedy of Mariam which eschews the traditional critical opposition between "virtuous" and "vicious" characters in the text. Rather, the text is viewed as a set of competing discourses which, by their very competition, effect a de construction of patriarchal ideology. Chapter 4 seeks to re-establish Carey's claim to the authorship of The History of the Life, Reign and Death of Edward II. This issue of authorship has been confused by the existence of the text in a longer, folio form and a shorter, octavo form. Here, I argue against a recent publication to show that Carey is the author of the folio but not the octavo. Chapter 5 focuses upon the historical and literary contexts of The History of the Life, Reign and Death of Edward II, beginning by exploring the possibility that the text is a criticism of Buckingham's role in the courts of James I and Charles I. The chapter then focuses upon the ways in which Carey rejects the characterisation of Queen Isabel by Drayton and Marlowe and constructs her own version of the history in which Isabel is both powerful and sympathetic.

Abstract:
Institutions of higher education in the United States have long been attractors for international students from all over the world. The number of international students had been constantly growing until the past couple of years. This is a concerning issue because international students play several important roles in higher education institutions. International students bring different points of view that enhance other students’ learning and institutions gain financial benefits from the presence of international students. Thus, it is important to understand how to improve the experience of international students. For the present study I used a phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of international students and their spouses. Participants in this study included 16.5 dyads from 12 different countries. The sample included both graduate international students and their spouses for various reasons. When studying acculturation, studies have traditionally focused on undergraduate students. The needs and experiences of undergraduate students are different from graduate students because they are usually in a different stage of life. It is also true that graduate students often relocate with their dependents, unlike undergraduate students, and therefore they have different challenges and responsibilities. It is important to include spouses because they are often an invisible population. Dependents have critical limitations such as the prohibition to work or study. This study was conducted through the lens of biographical disruption and participants’ accounts were analyzed to better understand the added communication work that they must manage. The findings showed that there was a relationship between acculturation categories and the amount and type of acculturation work. Finally, the study shows how international students and their dependents reconstruct their biographies by molding their identities. This study should be used to create new policies and services for international students and their dependents.

The internationally unique position of sports in the American higher education system raisesquestions about the impact of sports on patterns of social stratification in education. The presentthesis explores dynamics of social differentiation among American college athletes based on theirhigh school and hometown background. Data on more than 250,000 student athletes active incompetitive college sports in the Divisions I and II of the National Collegiate Athletic Associationin the season 2019/2020 was assembled and analyzed through geometric data analysis. Multiplecorrespondence analysis and principal component analysis was used to construct a social spaceof college athletes and college sports teams. The results indicate a significant differentiationbetween student athletes in terms of the characteristics of their high schools and hometowns. Theposition of student athletes in the space of college sports seems to be somewhat related to anathlete’s socioeconomic background, in so far that student athletes from different biographicalbackgrounds differ in their tendencies to play certain sports and to attend prestigious universities.The findings of this thesis thus reveal that educational recruitment through sports exhibitsdynamics of social stratification similar to academic selection.

Abstract:
When Charles Brasch died, in 1973, he specified that his private papers - his diaries, letters, and many of his manuscripts - be placed under embargo for thirty years after his death. The external details of his life were, by this time, well-known. He had become a high-profile figure in the field of New Zealand literature, through his critical writings, his role as 'patron', and particularly his twenty- year editorship of the periodical Landfall. Yet his reputation as a poet, although established, was neglected both then and now. His poetry is one of central relevance to a contemporary scene; as clearly as any, it reveals the difficulty of writing for, and about, a society which still laboured under the weight of a 'colonial' stigma. By tracing the movement from his juvenilia to his mature poetry, from his teenage years to adulthood, this study examines the effect of Brasch's personal development on his writing. Partly because of the embargo on his papers, partly because of his secretive nature, his private life has remained a shadow behind poetry which is itself often ambiguous; yet his creative progression was largely determined by the events of this life, both external and internal. Previously, little has been known or written about the decade and a half he spent in Europe. These were crucial years, both in shaping his editorial vision, and in the discovery of his own poetic voice. By means of personal interviews, and recourse to letters in private collections, his story is told: from his arrival in Oxford in 1927, to his final acceptance of New Zealand as his home, in 1945. The first chapter outlines the three years he spent at St John's College, and the general literary context in which he began to write. Chapter Two covers his brief foray into archaeology, and the resultant poetry and unpublished fiction. The importance of German literature - particularly that of Rilke - to his work becomes the focus of Chapter Three. As a direct result of this influence, the second half of the 1930s was dominated by his search for a voice, and a subject, of his own. Chapter Four details this struggle, and the first tentative New Zealand element in his work. A teaching job at Great Missenden - the subject of Chapter Five - temporarily distracted Brasch from developing this theme, yet sources reveal that the country of his birth was never far from his mind. Chapters Six and Seven deal with the effect on his poetry of the growing unease in Europe, the difficult split of allegiances to two hemispheres, and his subsequent commitment to England for the duration of the war. Throughout 1944-5, he became involved in script-writing, and the eighth and final chapter examines the extent of his success in this new genre. His return to New Zealand, late in 1945, marked the apparent beginning of a career which, nonetheless, had its origins in experiences half a world away.

Abstract:
A small percentage of mentally ill patients, sometimes referred to as 'revolving door' patients, are frequently readmitted to psychiatric hospitals. This study explores how these patients construct meaning and reality and how this enacted reality provides a context for shaping their identities. The study draws on mental health policy, political ideologies and the history of deinstitutionalisation in order to illuminate this problematic phenomenon. The study is framed within the social sciences, but more specifically within the fields of mental health and social work practice. The methodology is qualitative, placing emphasis on a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. The foundation of the study is underpinned by a social construction and social psychology framework. A unique minimalist interview technique based on the Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method is used for data collection and analysis. Data from seven interviews with participants are presented followed by the researcher's reflections on the interviews and post-interview process. The life stories of four of the seven participants are analysed by using reflective teams. The lived life, or chronological chain of events as narrated, is analysed sequentially and separately. The told story, or thematic ordering of the narration, is then analysed using thematic field analysis; this involved reconstructing the participants' system of knowledge, their interpretations of their lives and their classification of experiences into thematic fields. An integrated procedure of abductive and inductive analysis of the stories elicited from participants offered immense potential for constructing meaning. Perspectives on 'revolving door' patients have often regarded them as having a one-dimensional life. This study revealed that these existential lives are complex and diverse and exist within a cultural matrix of social and psychological constructs. Interpretations of these patients' experiences illuminate the complexities arising from multiple admissions to psychiatric hospitals and highlight the problematic aspects which impact their socially constructed identities. These case studies of 'revolving door' patients' personally narrated lives extend the social psychological study of self/identity and contribute to the field of mental health research.

The author assesses the life and work of the Newcastle upon Tyne born writer Jack Common in the light of the massive social, economic and cultural changes which have affected the North East of England and wider society through the period of Common's life and afterwards. He seeks to point out the relevance of Common to the present day in terms of his ideas about class, community and the individual and in the light of Common's sense of rebelliousness influenced by a process of grass-roots education and self-improvement. In addition, he draws upon his own extensive experience in community arts and education, looking, in particular, at the work he and others have carried out on Common over the last thirty years and assessing its value in the light of recent political changes. The author draws together the range of biographical and literary criticism carried out by a range of individuals over this period of time and brings into print hitherto unpublished material about Common's life and work by interviewing family members and associates, exploring the Common Archive at Newcastle University and other largely ignored sources, and studying Common's significant association with George Orwell in great detail. Through all of this, he seeks to argue that Common's life and ideas remain worthy of close attention in the present day.

Det övergripande syftet med denna avhandling är att undersöka förhållandet mellan migration, reflexivitet och social klass. I fokus för den empiriska analysen står högt kvalificerade estniska emigranter. Reflexivitet har hittills inte varit ett viktigt begrepp i migrationsstudier. Även om vissa studier använt ordet reflexivitet, har det i huvudsak fungerat som bakgrundsbegrepp. Det finns en påtaglig brist på empiriskt orienterade studier av reflexivitet i migrationsstudier. Avhandlingen består av fyra artiklar med något olika inriktning. Den första undersöker det empiriska fallet i sin helhet utifrån en survey-undersökning om estniska migranter. Den andra artikeln diskuterar den brittiske sociologen Margaret Archers sätt att analysera migration och argumenterar i hennes efterföljd för ett socialpsykologiskt synsätt på de skiftande motiven att migrera. Den tredje artikeln utmanar tanken på att migranters återvändande i huvudsak kan förstås som saknad efter sociala relationer och känslor av hemlängtan. I den fjärde artikeln föreslås ett sätt för livsstilsorienterade migrationsstudier att hantera frågan om reflexivitet. Här positioneras livsstilsmigranter teoretiskt till andra typer av migranter och hur variationer ilivsstilsmigration kan analyseras. Trots inbördes variation har samtliga artiklar en gemensam nämnare.<br>This thesis focuses on issues around reflexivity and highly skilled migration. Reflexivity has been an underused concept in migration studies and incurporating it has been long overdue. By reflexivity this thesis understands the capacity of an actor to evaluate his or her position in relation to social structures, to take action in managing those structures and, finally, to critically revise both the position and action taken. There are multiple reasons as to why incorporating reflexivity is a useful endeavor to migration studies. On one hand, using reflexive types in order to understand different migration motivations offers an alternative to otherwise mainly class based explanations behind migration objectives. Migration research has long relied on the idea that migration motivations can be coupled with societal and class background. Similarly, return migration has been described almost unanimously as a result of a homing desire. Both positions, as claimed in this thesis, are oversimplifications. On the other hand, I argue that, reflexivity helps to analyze the importance of class or even society on migration in 21th century. This is why I suggest to analyze all three in concurrence – migration, reflexivity and class. In the following pages I analyze how reflexivity can be operationalized for studying migration. So far, reflexivity has been either used as background concept – mobility studies or for explaining particular kind of migration – lifestyle migration. I argue, that with careful operationalization reflexivity could be useful tool for explaining wide-variety of migrations – family, labour, lifestyle etc. Three articles in this thesis focus on providing such operationalizations, analyzing the relationship between migration motivations and reflexivity. Finally, the first article in this thesis analyzes the background of my particular group of migrants – Estonian highly skilled migrants and positions them in relation to other groups in Estonian society. Moreover, the article also underlines that self-development and lifestyle, if you will, is an important motivation for Eastern European migrants as well.

De ursprungliga frågeställningarna var: "Hur upplever äldre personer att åldras med psykisk ohälsa?" och "Hur kan psykisk ohälsa bland äldre förstås ur ett livsloppsperspektiv?". Under studiens gång utkristalliserades en tredje frågeställning som ett analytiskt resultat av datamaterialet. Den lyder: "Vilka livsstrategier använder dessa personer för att hantera sina liv med psykisk ohälsa?" Sex personer mellan 65 och 85 år intervjuades om sin subjektiva erfarenhet av att leva med psykisk ohälsa. Intervjuerna var semistrukturerade och livsloppsorienterade för att fånga livets sammansatta dynamik och upplevelsen av att leva ett långt liv med psykisk ohälsa. De viktigaste resultaten pekade på en mycket stark identifikation mellan sjukdom och person som också format intervjupersonernas berättelser om och upplevelser av det levda livet. Det blev också tydligt att ett långt liv med psykisk ohälsa påverkar livets helhet.<br>The aim of this study is: "From a course of life perspective describe and analyse elderly’s experiences and tales about psychological ill-health and how that is influencing the aging". The original question formulations were: "How does elderly people experience aging with psychological ill-health?" and "How can psychological ill-health among elders be understood trough a live course perspective?". During the study a third question arose as an analytical result from the study material. "Which strategies does these people use to cope with their lives with psychological ill-health?". Six persons between the age of 65 to 85 where interviewed about their subjective experience about living with psychological ill-health. The interviews where semi-structured and course of live oriented to catch life’s compound dynamics and the experience to live a long live with psychological ill-health. The most important result in the study shows that there is a very strong identification between illness and the person that formed the interviewee’s story about their experience of the life lived. It also became clear that a life with psychological ill-health has a life embracing meaning.

School-to-work (STW) transitions have become more protracted over recent decades, with increased risks of unemployment and social exclusion for young people. Moreover, young people are expected to plan their own career and enhance their employa­bility, although gender and social and cultural background still significantly influence employment prospects. Policies have been developed in an attempt to facilitate young people’s pathways into work. However, STW-transitions are one of the weakest poin­ts in Swedish welfare system; in addition the quality of career guidance has been questioned. This dissertation aims to describe and analyse young adults STW-transitions from a biographical perspective. It is based around life story interviews with 52 unem­ployed young adults’, 25-29 years old, including men and women with varying educa­tional backgrounds, living in three different Swedish local contexts. Four research questions are examined: How do the young adults’ describe their STW-transitions in retrospect? What characterized their horizons of actions at the time of the interview? What is the impact of public career guidance? How did ethnicity, gender and locality affect answers to the above questions - and how may such differences be interpreted? The analysis of the young adults’ narratives was based on the careership theory devel­oped by Hodkinson and Sparkes. In retrospect the young adults described their STW-transitions as an attempt to find and achieve personal goals. They emphasized turning points, i.e. when educa­tion or a job begins or ends, but also highlighted experiences when studying or working that make them realize what they wanted or what they would not accept. Four transition patterns, partly connected to gender and locality, were identified among the respondents: yo-yoing between workplaces, education and unemploy­ment; mainly working; mainly in education; or mainly excluded from work and education. These patterns involved varying experiences, current situations and future expectations. At the time of the interview the young adults’ horizon of action involved interrelated aspects of life, but getting a stable job and settling down was pivotal to most of them. The strategies of the interviewees for navigating between dreams and reality diverged. However, they shared an ambition “to put one’s talents to good use” and feared not being able to do so. Experiences of career guidance were generally reported to have been sporadic and meaningless. However, in some cases, inter­ventions are influential for example, when choosing an upper secondary school or during times of unemployment. The young adults’ employed various strategies when interventions adversely affected their goals; of these “to managing by one’s self” was the most common. In addition, guidance varied according to ethnicity and local structures. It is concluded that STW-transitions are challenging journeys, mainly undertaken without professional support, which the young adults perceived as uncertain.<br>Individen, vägarna, valen. This thesis explores how current ways of imagining possibilities for intersexed and trans embodied lives within medical contexts might be informed by and reimagined through the historical lived experiences of intersexed and trans individuals as they have been articulated in autobiographical accounts. Postmodern, queer, intersex, and trans researchers and activists have criticised existing standards of intersex and trans healthcare for limiting the possibilities for diverse embodied lives by articulating certain forms of embodiment and selfhood as more likely to enable a liveable life than others. This has often been done in a medico-legal context by referring to experiences in the past of the unliveability of corporealities and gendersexed situations that differ from privileged positions. With a point of departure in these critiques, this thesis reopens questions about how intersexed and trans people may be embodied and have relations with others by reflecting upon the period of the first three-quarters of the 20th century, when the present standards of care and diagnostic categories were emerging, but had not yet become established. Drawing upon a unique set of historical source material from the archives of the Danish Ministry of Justice and the Medico-Legal Council, intersexed and trans persons’ life stories are rearticulated from their own and medico-legal experts’ accounts written in relation to applications for change of legal gendersex status and medical transition. In this way, the process is traced through which these life stories have been repeatedly rearticulated in order to become a usable basis for diagnosis and decision-making. At the same time, the stories are unfolded once more in a rearticulation focusing on their complexity and diversity.<br>Denna avhandling undersöker hur nuvarande sätt att föreställa sig möjligheter för intersexuella och transpersoners liv inom medicinska sammanhang kan informeras av och omföreställas genom historiska livserfarenheter hos intersexuella och transindivider, som de har artikulerats i självbiografiska berättelser. Postmoderna, queer, intersex- och transforskare och aktivister har kritiserat existerande normer för intersex- och transhälsovård för att begränsa möjligheterna för olika förkroppsligande liv genom att artikulera vissa former av förkroppsligande och subjektivitet som mer sannolikt att möjliggöra ett levbart liv än andra. Detta har ofta gjorts i ett medicinskt-juridiskt sammanhang genom att hänvisa till förflutna erfarenheter av levbarhet kring förkroppsligande och genusifierande situationer som skiljer sig från privilegierade positioner. Med utgångspunkt i denna kritik, återupptar denna avhandling frågor om hur intersexuella och transpersoner kan bli förkroppsligade och ha relationer till andra, genom att reflektera kring de första tre fjärdedelarna av nittonhundratalet när de nuvarande normerna för vård och diagnostiska kategorier uppstod, men ännu inte blivit etablerade. Med utgångspunkt i en unik uppsättning av historiskt källmaterial från Danska  Justitiedepartementet och Medicinsk-Etiska Rådets arkiv, återges intersexuella och transpersoners livshistorier från egna och medicinsk-etiska experters berättelser skrivna i relation till ansökningar av förändring av juridiskt kön och medicinsk transition. Genom denna process har livshistorier upprepande gånger blivit omartikulerade för att bli en användbar grund för diagnos och beslutsfattande. Samtidigt är dessa livshistorier uppöppnade än en gång i en omartikulation med fokus på deras komplexitet och mångfald.

Tyrimo aktualumas. Apie 80 procentų pacientų su stuburo smegenų pažeidimais yra vyrai, paaugliai ir jauni suaugusieji. Dauguma jų yra aktyvūs, socialūs asmenys, kurių reabilitacijos tikslas po nugaros smegenų pažeidimo – grįžti į normalų gyvenimą pas šeimą, draugus, bendraamžius. Mokslininkai teigia, kad tradicinis vyriškas vaidmuo visuomenėje – tokie bruožai kaip stiprumas, emocijų kontrolė, savarankiškumas, jėga ir dominavimas trukdo vyrams ieškoti pagalbos. Be to, tradicinės vyriškumo savybės, įskaitant nepriklausomumą, sėkmę darbe, yra susijusios su bendru savęs vertinimu, todėl pakitimai gali turėti žymų poveikį. Teorinėje dalyje pristatoma identiteto samprata, tapatumą aiškinančios teorijos, kentėjimo trajektorijos samprata. Skiriamas vaidmuo nehegemoninio vyriškumo aptarimui, vyriškumo ir negalios sankirtų perspektyvai. Remiantis autorių įžvalgomis bandoma apibūdinti skirtingas vyriškumo formas. Avhandlingens syfte är att beskriva och analysera arbetets betydelse i starta eget–bidragsföretagares liv. Material har samlats in dels genom en omfattande enkätstudie som omfattar hela populationen nuvarande och tidigare företagare från 1995 i Östergötlands län, dels genom en serie livsberättelseorienterade intervjuer med ett urval aktiva respektive före detta företagare med fokus på deras inställning till arbete. Resultaten visar bland annat att etableringsmotiven ofta utgår främst från strukturer och omständigheter utanför individen och att dennes handlande när det gäller att starta eget i mycket bygger på ett oreflekterat förhållningssätt. Analyserna lyfter också fram de identitetsskapande aspekterna av arbete och visar att den del av identiteten som är knuten till arbete i många fall mycket starkt påverkar eller omformar övriga identitetsaspekter. SeB-företagarna kan betraktas som ”nödvändighetsentreprenörer” då de skapar nya arbetstillfällen åt sig själva. Bland nuvarande företagare anser drygt hälften att deras liv tagit en positiv riktning. De mest negativa återfinns i gruppen tidigare SeB-företagare, av vilka drygt en tredjedel anser att deras liv tagit en negativ riktning. Bland fördelarna med företagande framhålls av de studerade personerna framför allt möjligheten till en upplevd egenkontroll i arbetet. Nackdelar som betonas är ekonomisk oro, kompetensbrist och brist på sociala relationer.<br>The thesis aims to describe and analyze the importance of work for those who start up in business through the active labour market programme – the start-up grant entrepreneur. The material was collected partly through an extensive questionnaire study covering the entire population of current and former entrepreneurs in subsidized enterprises from 1995 in Östergötland, Sweden, and partly by a series of life story-oriented interviews about attitudes to work with a sample of active or former entrepreneurs. The results show, inter alia, that the establishment motives are often essentially based on the structure and circumstances beyond the individual and that his/her actions in terms of starting their own business are largely based on a non reflective approach. The analysis also highlights the identity-building aspects of work and shows that in many cases the part of one’s identity that is associated with work significantly affects other identity issues. Start-up entrepreneurs can be regarded as ”necessity entrepreneurs” when they create new jobs for themselves. Among the current workers, just over half believe that their lives have taken a positive direction. The most negative is the group of former start-up entrepreneurs, in which just over one third indicate that their lives have taken a negative direction. The methodology of this investigation is a biographic boarding. Carvalho Neto was General Director of Public Instruction, President of Superior Advice of Education, and Director of Normal School between 1918-1920. After of the experience at Direction of the Public Instruction, defended a Project to creation of classrooms and school adjusted to Abnormal Children, has teachers of the Sergipe Commerce School Orlando Council Member , and it crowned its insertion in the educational field as the first Director of the Law school of Sergipe, in 1951. In the General Direction of Instruction has emphasis to Scholar Inspection Service. The orientation of this study is supported in the teoric-methologic contributions of the New History and Cultural History. In the History of the Education, the investigation of the trajectory of Carvalho Neto it allowed to understand significants aspects of the teaching work´s configurations in the first half of the century XX in Sergipe.<br>Este estudo tem o objetivo de analisar as representações do trabalho docente, as práticas culturais e o lugar de produção do percurso feito pelo intelectual da educação Antônio Manoel de Carvalho Neto, identificando, nesse contexto, as configurações da conformação educacional no período. A metodologia adotada é a abordagem biográfica. Carvalho Neto foi Diretor Geral de Instrução Pública, Presidente do Conselho Superior de Educação, Diretor da Escola Normal, entre 1918-1920. Após a experiência na Direção da Instrução Pública, defendeu um Projeto no intuito de criar classes e escolas para Crianças Anormaes, foi professor da Escola de Comércio de Sergipe Conselheiro Orlando e coroou sua inserção no campo educacional como o primeiro Diretor da Faculdade de Direito de Sergipe em 1951. Na Direção Geral de Instrução, deu ênfase ao Serviço de Inspeção Escolar. A orientação do presente estudo está centrada nos aportes teórico-metodológicos da Nova História e História Cultural. Na História da Educação, investigar a trajetória de Carvalho Neto permitiu compreender aspectos significativos da configuração do trabalho docente na primeira metade do século XX em Sergipe.

A primeira obra, de cunho mais histórico, suscita muitas discussões quanto a seu gênero e, por ser de autoria de um historiador canônico, costuma ser considerada muito elaborada para uma biografia. A segunda obra estudada aqui, por sua vez, cujo eixo narrativo é de caráter privado, amiúde é concebida como uma biografia pouco elaborada, sobretudo pela carência de informações históricas. Tendo notado a frequente comparação entre as duas obras (verificando, muitas vezes, o detrimento da biografia de Suetônio como uma obra historiográfica), bem como certa hesitação quanto a definição do gênero a que elas pertencem, buscamos, nesta dissertação, apresentar as possíveis diferenças genéricas entre biografia e história na Antiguidade, uma vez que tais conceitos, e a apreciação de obras e autores, parecem variar na bibliografia moderna. Assim, apresenta-se nesta pesquisa um levantamento das definições do gênero biográfico por autores modernos, as reflexões de autores da Antiguidade - tais como Cícero, Quintiliano, Cornélio Nepos, Plutarco, Políbio e Luciano de Samósata - sobre a escrita biográfica e historiográfica, e uma breve análise do desenvolvimento do gênero biográfico, suas relações com a historiografia e características de composição. Pretendemos, ao analisar tais questões, observar se a biografia pode ser considerada um gênero autônomo - mesmo que suas fronteiras com a historiografia não sejam claramente definidas. Por fim, analisamos as obras de Tácito e Suetônio, a fim de examinar a construção das duas obras e como elas poderiam estar inseridas no gênero biográfico. Ao fim de nosso estudo, apresentamos a tradução comentada, do latim para o português, da De Vita Iulii Agricolae<br>Abstract: Both Suetonius' De Vita Caligulae and Tacitus' De Vita Iulii Agricolae are biographical works with very distinct composition and features, which may often reflect in modern approaches with respect to biography. The first title, of historical nature, draws much discussion about its genre and, on account of being written by a canonical historian, is commonly considered too much elaborated for a biography. On its turn, the second one, whose narrative axis has a private character, is usually understood as less laborious, especially due to the lack of historical information. Observing the frequent comparison between both titles (the detriment of Suetonius' biography as historiographical work is regularly verified), as well as the hesitation concerning the genre they belong to, this dissertation describes an investigation into possible generic differences between biography and history in ancient times, once such concepts, besides the appraisal of works and authors, seem to fluctuate through modern bibliography. Hence, the present research raised several definitions of biographic genre by contemporary authors, the reflections of ancient writers - like Cicero, Quintilian, Cornelius Nepus, Plutarch, Polybius, and Lucian of Samosata - on biographical and historiographical writing, and a short analysis of biographical genre's development, its relationships towards historiography and composition features. The aim of such questions is to observe whether biography can be taken as an autonomous genre - even though its border with historiography is not clearly defined. At last, the mentioned Tacitus' and Suetonius' titles are analyzed in order to investigate the construction of both works and how they may be enclosed in biography genre. Thus, it aimed at investigating the continuities and discontinuities in the (re) construction of teachers professional careers in Visual Arts, defending the idea that significant aspects of both personal and professional life and the teaching moment lived by the teachers interfere both in the construction of this career as well as in a better understanding of the role of the teacher and, consequently, his / her teaching performance. In the field of Visual Arts teaching, this thesis equally reconstructs the history of institutions responsible for the teaching of Arts in our country, focusing more specifically the present situation of the Instituto de Artes e Design (Arts and Design Institute) from the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), which was opened back in 1949. The thesis is based in different researches about biographical data, including the ones which concern the different teacher s career phases (centered in the years of professional experience), and the life cycles, indicating the personal dimension as fundamental in the process by which the teachers build their careers and make their work dynamic, making it clear that the professional improvement is associated to the personal improvement, or is also part of it. Besides this, there are contributions from authors who investigate the teaching activity, specially the ones involved with the professionalization, the professional development and the teacher s knowledge, as well as investigators who analyze the school as a culture producer. The methodological approach is biographic-narrative, which enables the teachers to talk about what they know and do, what they did or what they could or should do, that is, it makes possible to make explicit the past dimensions which have an influence on the present situations and its projection into expected action forms. The teachers who participated in the research teach in city public schools in Pelotas in the area of Visual Arts, all having graduated at IAD. The study takes a quanti-qualitative character, as it combines the questionnaire with interviews. The questionnaire involved 40 teachers and enabled to know characteristics and expectations common to the people as a whole. The interviewed was made with 7 teachers, graduated in different phases of the teaching course (according to changes in the educational legislation) and with distinct teaching experience, permitting to understand aspects related to school history; the choice of the career with their determinant factors and expectations; academic history and their influences; remembrances and teaching practical education; teaching career, within its initial years; whether the fact of being a man / woman affected his / her career; the teaching experience, previous and present. For a better understanding of the teaching career, biographical paths were created based on the analysis of the interviews, here so-called biopaths. Another element used to complement the interviews and the analysis of the biographical data were Travelling Images of Art pieces asked by the teachers, chosen by them in order to express the present moment which they have been facing. For the elaboration of phases, the starting point was the principle that the years of career are meaningful to define the beginning of the first phase, called impact (1-6 years), but they were not standards for its end, because the events faced by the teachers, both at schools as well as in their personal lives, were significant for a change of phase. The closeness to the second phase, the personalization one (7-12 years), was justified because the teachers defined a personal teaching style to teach Visual Arts for groups of different levels and schools with different realities, which demands time and maturity, without discharging a faster change provoked by one or another type of event, a critical moment faced by the teacher. The phase of alternation (13-18 years) corresponded to a period in which the teaching experience enabled the teacher to better understand the educational and the teaching system, what he / she can or cannot do, what he / she wants to do or not, the teacher gave him /herself the chance to choose. Finally the fact of being close to the end of the career determined the so-called individualization phase (19-25 years), responsible for the distance between the teacher and the educational problems and the search for personal satisfaction. Therefore, the teaching years are considered meaningful in the professional career, but they are not the ones which define the phases, as the narratives from the teachers prove that the phases constantly mix - or not and one does not place away nor eliminates the possibility of another. Finally, the modifications in the life phases of teachers are caused by the conditions of determined time and places, having occurred due to the opportunities and limitations dealt by each one of them; the crisscrossing of personal histories and the professional careers in these different moments and places configure a singularity in the teaching practice of these teachers. Although all have gone through, in a general way, similar phases in their teaching careers, it was evident that each one have their own and unique life experience and professional career, each with a specific subjective experience, each one of them is unique. To end, it can be said that the understanding of the life cycles, through the phases of the teaching career, crisscrossing personal histories and professional careers in different places and moments of the teaching practice, enables thinking about alternatives and motivating innovation proposals for the initial and continuing teacher s education.<br>Esta pesquisa discute a problemática da profissão docente em Artes Visuais a partir do estudo do ciclo de vida profissional, ou seja, do ciclo vital pelo qual passam os professores. Assim, teve como objetivo investigar as continuidades e escontinuidades na (re) construção da trajetória profissional de docentes de Artes Visuais, defendendo a idéia de que aspectos significativos da vida pessoal e profissional e o momento docente em que se encontram os professores interferem tanto na construção dessa trajetória quanto para uma melhor compreensão da pessoa do professor e, como conseqüência, da sua atuação docente. No campo do ensino das Artes Visuais, esta tese igualmente reconstrói a história das instituições responsáveis pelo ensino da Arte em nosso país, enfocando mais precisamente o caso do atual Instituto de Artes e Design (IAD) da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), cuja criação remonta a 1949. A tese está assentada em diferentes pesquisas sobre trajetórias biográficas, incluindo as que abordam as fases da carreira do professor (centradas nos anos de experiência profissional), e os ciclos de vida, indicando a dimensão pessoal como fundamental no processo pelos quais os professores se constroem e dinamizam seu trabalho, deixando claro que o aperfeiçoamento profissional está associado ao desenvolvimento pessoal, ou faz parte dele. Ademais, são trazidas contribuições de autores que investigam o trabalho docente, especialmente os que tratam da profissionalização, do desenvolvimento profissional e dos saberes docentes, bem como de investigadores que analisam a escola como produtora de cultura. A abordagem metodológica é a biográfico-narrativa, que possibilita aos professores falarem sobre o que conhecem e fazem, o que faziam ou o que poderiam ou deveriam fazer, ou seja, permite a explicitação das dimensões do passado que pesam sobre as situações atuais e sua projeção em formas desejáveis de ação. Os professores que participaram da pesquisa exercem a docência na rede municipal de Pelotas e atuam na área de Artes Visuais, todos formados pelo IAD. O estudo assume um caráter quantiqualitativo, ao combinar questionário com entrevista. O questionário envolveu 40 professores e possibilitou conhecer características e expectativas formativas comuns no coletivo. A entrevista foi realizada com 7 professores, formados em diferentes etapas do curso de formação docente (conforme as mudanças da legislação educacional) e com distintos tempos de atuação no magistério, permitindo compreender aspectos relativos à escolarização; escolha da profissão com seus fatores determinantes e expectativas; trajetória acadêmica com suas influências; lembranças e formação prática de ensino; carreira docente, com seus primeiros anos; se o fato de ser mulher/homem afetou a carreira; exercício da docência, anterior e atual. Para melhor compreensão da trajetória docente, a partir da análise das entrevistas foram criados os caminhos biográficos, aqui denominados de biovias. Outro elemento usado para complementar as entrevistas e análise de dados biográficos foram Imagens Viajantes de obras de Arte solicitadas aos professores, escolhidas por eles para significar o momento atual em que estão vivendo. Para a elaboração das fases partiu-se do princípio de que os anos de carreira são significativos para definir o início da primeira fase, denominada de impacto (1-6 anos), mas não foram balizadores do seu término, porque os acontecimentos vividos pelos professores, tanto na escola quanto na vida pessoal, foram determinantes para uma mudança de fase. Já a aproximação da segunda fase, a de personalização (7-12 anos), justificou se porque os professores definiram um estilo pessoal de ensinar Artes Visuais para turmas de níveis diversificados e escolas com realidades diferentes, o que requer tempo e maturidade, sem descartar uma mudança mais rápida provocada por um ou outro tipo de acontecimento, um momento crítico enfrentado pelo professor. A fase de alternância (13-18 anos) correspondeu a um período no qual o tempo de atuação possibilitou ao professor uma maior compreensão do sistema educacional e da docência, do que pode ou não, do que quer ou não fazer, o professor permitiu-se optar. Já a proximidade com o final da carreira determinou a fase de individualização (19-25 anos), responsável pelo distanciamento do professor dos problemas educacionais e pela busca de satisfação pessoal. Deste modo, os anos de docência são considerados significativos na trajetória profissional, mas não são definidores das fases, pois as narrativas dos professores comprovam que as fases se mesclam constantemente - ou não - e uma não afasta nem elimina a possibilidade de outra. Portanto, as modificações nas fases da vida dos professores são ocasionadas pelas condições de tempo e lugar determinados, ocorreram pelas oportunidades e limitações vividas por cada um deles; o entrecruzamento das histórias pessoais e das trajetórias profissionais nesses diferentes espaços e tempos configuram uma singularidade na prática docente desses professores. Embora todos tenham passado, de um modo geral, por fases similares da carreira docente, ficou evidente que cada um tem uma história de vida e trajetória profissional singular, cada um tem uma trajetória subjetiva específica, cada um deles é único. Por fim, pode-se dizer que a compreensão dos ciclos de vida, através das fases da carreira docente, entrecruzando histórias pessoais e trajetórias profissionais em diferentes espaços e tempos da prática docente, possibilita pensar alternativas e incentivar propostas de inovação para a formação docente inicial e continuada.

Ce travail de thèse se focalise sur des trajectoires des personnes en prise avec des produitspsycho-actifs inscrites dans une démarche d'arrêt ou de diminution des consommations d'alcool ou desdrogues illicites. À partir d'une posture ethnographique, à la fois compréhensive et critique, nousavons exploré la construction de la « sortie » des addictions au regard des contraintes morales, socialeset institutionnelles. En suivant ces trajectoires de déprise, nous avons pu questionner le passage desaddicts dans les Centres de Soin, d’Accompagnement et de Prévention en Addictologie (CSAPA), etles groupes d’entraide (Vie Libre et Narcotiques Anonymes). Ces deux entités se posent commeexperts de la question addictologique. Les premiers par leur spécialisation professionnelle et lesseconds par leur expérience intime de l'addiction. Simultanément, l'addict est, dans les deuxdispositifs, considérée comme l'experte d'elle-même, en ce sens qu'elle doit se connaître, et que c'estpar ce savoir biographique qu'elle peut en sortir. Le travail biographique que les « addicts » déploientpermet une mise à distance de l'expérience de l'emprise. Il s'agit de constituer un jugement moral surses comportements passés sous l'effet des produits. Le processus de déprise peut être considéré commeun processus de subjectivation permettant aux individus de « recoller les morceaux » de leur vie etredevenir soi. C'est seulement au moment de la mise en récit devant les pairs ou les professionnels quel'on peut parler d'une rupture biographique. En ce sens les entités médiatisent les récits des addicts,parce qu'elles participent à déterminer les manières de se dire. La narration est ainsi une conditiond'entrée dans la Cité. Il ne faut donc pas occulter l'aspect contraignant de ce processus, en ce sens quel'obligation de se raconter participe aussi à construire un sujet moral capable de s'auto-contrôler<br>This research focuses on the trajectories of persons in touch with psycho-active productsand falling within a process to either stop or reduce their consumption of alcohol or drugs. Byadopting an ethnographic approach, which is both comprehensive and critical, we've been exploringthe construction of an “exit” of addictions regarding the moral, social and institutional constraints.When following these trajectories, we've questioned the passage through the Centres de Soin,d'Accompagnement et de Prévention en Addictologie (CSAPA) and self-help groups (Vie Libre andNarcotics Anonymous). These two treatment plans position themselves as experts regardingaddictions. Simultaneously the addict is considered, in both treatment models, as an expert of him orherself, in this way that he or she should know him/herself and it is by the means of this biographicalknowledge that he or she can get free of addiction. The biographical work carried out by the addictsallow them to put a distance to their experience of addiction. It's a question of a moral judgment ofone's own actions in the past when he or she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The exitprocesscan then be considered as a subjectification process allowing the subjects to “put the pieces oftheir lives back together” and “become oneself” again. It's only by narrativizing one's experience infront of peers or the staff in the centers that we can observe a biographical disruption. The treatmentplans outline the life-stories of the addicts, because they participate in the definition of how people can“tell themselves. Narrativizing oneself is then a condition to enter the “Cité”. Though it's important notto mask the constraining dimension of this process, in this way that the obligation to narrativizeoneself participate in the construction of a moral subject capable of controlling him/herself

A un moment de l’histoire où l’émotion se veut l’adjuvant moteur de l’exercice et de l’action publique, ce travail de recherche s’inscrit à rebours d’une conception faisant de l’instantané et de l’événement les modes d’appréhension et d’expression de « sociétés liquides ». Fondé sur une approche critique, interdisciplinaire et humaniste, il étudie le comportement organisationnel dans un monde social lourdement impacté par un « managérialisme » mutilant l’histoire, la culture, et l’identité de cadres dirigeants publics dans les collectivités territoriales. Réhabilitant l’approche biographique comme stratégie d’accès au réel, la recherche met en évidence un « contrat psychologique » fondé sur un « équilibre stable » fruit d’une « double transaction biographique et relationnelle » autour de « l’éthique du bien commun », entre éthique de conviction et éthique de responsabilité. Elle étudie par la suite les logiques d’action qui se construisent aujourd’hui dans les administrations territoriales, où « l’image de l’organisation » comme « prison psychique » fait émerger des comportements allant de la défection à la résistance<br>At a time in history when emotion wants to be an auxiliary driver in running local government, this research reverses the concept where snapshots and events are seen as ways of expressing and dealing with "fluid societies." Based on a critical, interdisciplinary and humanistic approach, it studies organisational behaviour in a social world seriously affected by a "managerialism" that is mutilating the history, culture, and identity of managers in local authorities. Reinstating the biographical approach as a strategy for getting to the core of reality, the research highlights a "psychological contract" based on a "stable equilibrium", the result of a "double biographical and relational transaction" which focusses on "the ethics of the common good", the midpoint between the ethics of conviction and responsibility. It then examines the working principles that are surfacing in local government today, where "the organisation's image" as a "mental prison" leads to behaviour ranging from defection to resistance

Intéressée par les personnes accompagnées et l'écoute des souffrances psycho-sociales des usagers par les professionnels de l'intervention sociale, l'auteure interroge les dispositifs de formation dans ce domaine d'activité. Après avoir observé une injonction forte à la réflexivité dans le parcours de formation des futurs travailleurs sociaux, elle questionne ce tournant réflexif à partir des liens qui existent entre la figure idéal-typique de l'individu contemporain et la prise en compte des surdéterminations sociales dans le travail d'écoute et d'accompagnement chez les professionnels du champ de l'éducation spécialisée. Préoccupée de la façon dont le dispositif de formation pourrait davantage soutenir une perspective « techniciste » de l'intervention sociale, l'auteure introduit la pratique des récits de vie à partir d'un dispositif d'accompagnement collectif et clinique, auprès de huit étudiants. La recherche biographique, et plus précisément la sociologie clinique, semblent s'avérer particulièrement pertinentes, en complémentarité de l'approche par compétences, pour la formation des futurs travailleurs sociaux et la construction de leur identité professionnelle. Favorisant le développement du « pouvoir d'entendre » des futurs professionnels, ces approches accordent en effet une place prépondérante aux processus de subjectivation, tout en mettant en commun le projet collectif du « prendre soin d'autrui ». Il s'agit alors de porter attention à la construction d'une posture professionnelle spécifique à partir d'un travail de relecture existentielle visant, pour les étudiants, à mieux préciser « ce que je fais avec ce que je suis » dans l'activité professionnelle<br>Interested in the people that are being supported and the listening to the psycho-social suffering of users by social intervention professionals, the author questions the training systems in this field of activity. After having observed a strong injunction to reflexivity in the training of future social workers, she questions this reflexive turn based on the links that exist between the ideal-typical figure of the contemporary individual and the taking into account of social overdeterminations in the work of listening and support among professionals in the field of special education. Concerned by the way in which the training system could further support a « technicist » perspective of social intervention, the author introduces the pratice of life stories through a collective and clinical support system, with eight students. Biographical research, and more precisely clinical sociology, seem to be particularly pertinent with the skills-based approach, for the training of future social workers and the construction of their professional identity. Promoting the development of the « power to hear » of future professionals, these approaches indeed give a prominent place to processes of subjectivation, while sharing the collective project of « taking care of others ». It is then a question of paying attention to the construction of a specific professional posture from a work of existential rereading aimed, for the students, at better specifying « what I do with what I am » in the professional activity

A un moment de l’histoire où l’émotion se veut l’adjuvant moteur de l’exercice et de l’action publique, ce travail de recherche s’inscrit à rebours d’une conception faisant de l’instantané et de l’événement les modes d’appréhension et d’expression de « sociétés liquides ». Fondé sur une approche critique, interdisciplinaire et humaniste, il étudie le comportement organisationnel dans un monde social lourdement impacté par un « managérialisme » mutilant l’histoire, la culture, et l’identité de cadres dirigeants publics dans les collectivités territoriales. Réhabilitant l’approche biographique comme stratégie d’accès au réel, la recherche met en évidence un « contrat psychologique » fondé sur un « équilibre stable » fruit d’une « double transaction biographique et relationnelle » autour de « l’éthique du bien commun », entre éthique de conviction et éthique de responsabilité. Elle étudie par la suite les logiques d’action qui se construisent aujourd’hui dans les administrations territoriales, où « l’image de l’organisation » comme « prison psychique » fait émerger des comportements allant de la défection à la résistance<br>At a time in history when emotion wants to be an auxiliary driver in running local government, this research reverses the concept where snapshots and events are seen as ways of expressing and dealing with "fluid societies." Based on a critical, interdisciplinary and humanistic approach, it studies organisational behaviour in a social world seriously affected by a "managerialism" that is mutilating the history, culture, and identity of managers in local authorities. Reinstating the biographical approach as a strategy for getting to the core of reality, the research highlights a "psychological contract" based on a "stable equilibrium", the result of a "double biographical and relational transaction" which focusses on "the ethics of the common good", the midpoint between the ethics of conviction and responsibility. abstract: Due to the recent inclusion of a semi-regular "News from Latin America" column since 2007 in The Clarinet magazine and an increased emphasis on world music genre performances at the International Clarinet Association's annual ClarinetFest, Latin American clarinet compositions have become increasingly popular. Consequently, Latin American performers and composers are receiving more attention and recognition than ever before. The contemporary repertoire for clarinet increasingly includes works highlighted at the ClarinetFest international festivals, and many clarinetists express interest in finding new Latin American compositions. In order to supplement this growing Latin American repertoire and to introduce the life and works of Peruvian composer Armando Guevara Ochoa (1926-2013), this project presents a brief biography of the composer, a discussion of his musical style, and new editions of his popular works transcribed for clarinet. A recording of these works is included in an appendix to this document. Prior to this research, much of the scholarship written about Guevara Ochoa was in Spanish. While most sources and scholars relate that Guevara Ochoa composed over 400 works, the whereabouts of fewer than 200 are currently known. This dissertation–half of the MA in English Studies by coursework and dissertation–examines selected works of the playwright, poet and novelist, Kendrew Lascelles, who spent his youth and young adulthood in South Africa, and who since the mid-1960s has resided in the United States. The study – the first extended evaluation of Lascelles's work – focuses on those of his plays that feature an African dimension and on his 'post apocalyptic' novel, Tamara Hunney. The argument is that Africa, as a real and symbolic location, persists alongside the US influence in Lascelles's work, whether explicitly, as in his play about living in apartheid South Africa, or by suggestive parallel in his recognition of intercultural potential: for example, his contrast in Tamara Hunney of Los Angeles urban realism and native American ('Red Indian') spiritual redemption; that masculinist worlds (e.g. colonial or apartheid Africa; the US 'wild west', whether past or present) are tempered (educated) through gender sensitivity, or a feminine principle; and that an apparent paradox might but be a paradox in a writer who subscribes to foundational (romantic-conservative) values rather than to the trendy-liberal expositions of a media-saturated American society. The moral vision is captured not only thematically, but is embodied in 'form' as meaning: in surprising shifts of generic convention and style. The second purpose is to examine the moderating effects of employee’s biographic background and personality on the above relationships. Three hundred and ninety two employees from public and private business entities were sampled for questionnaire survey and provided data for hypothesis testing. Regression analyses were used in data analysis. The results of the analyses howed that: 1. More overtime hours led to greater WFC and FWC. 2. Frequency of overtime work and a feeling of busy while working overtime was positively related to WFC. 3. Positive attitude toward overtime work was negatively related to WFC and FWC. 4. Men in overtime work experienced a higher level of FWC than women. 5. The personality trait of openness to experience had no influence on the overtime and FWC or WFC relationship. The findings of this research could contribute to assist managers in maintaining a balance between enterprise activities and employee’s family lives in order to make employee feel less stressed on their jobs and hence improve their productivities.

The thesis of this study is that indigenous Tsonga literature forms a valid and authoritative commentary on missionary Christianity. In this study, the value of literary works by selected Tsonga writers is explored in three basic directions: (a) as a commentary on missionary Christianity, (b) as a source of and challenge to missiology, and (c) as a source of a Black missiology of 1 i berat ion. The momentous intervention of Swiss missionaries amongst the Vatsonga, through the activities of the Swiss Mission in South Africa (SMSA) must be granted. Similarly, its abiding influence formerly in the Tsonga Presbyterian Church (TPC), now the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa (EPCSA), the Vatsonga in general and Tsonga literature in particular must be recognized. But our missiological task is to problematise and explore both missionary instrumentality and local responses variously and creatively. The first chapter introduces the thesis, central issues of historiography and ideology as well as an introductory history of the SMSA. In the second chapter, the commentary of Tsonga writers through the media of historical and biographical works on missionary Christianity is sketched. Selected Tsonga novels become the object of inquiry in the third chapter. The novels come very close to a direct evaluation of missionary Christianity. They contain commentary on a wide variety of issues in mission. The fourth chapter concentrates on two Tsonga plays and a number of Tsonga poems. In the one play, missionary Christianity is likened to garments that are too sho· ~' whilst in the other, missionary Christianity is contemptuously ignored and excluded - recognition granted only to the religion and gods of the Vatsonga. This dissertation investigates the relationship between work performance and the sense of coherence, using the salutogenesis approach and the influence of employees' biographical variables on work performance. The sense of coherence construct is discussed and conceptualised in terms of its comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness. Similarly, work performance is discussed and conceptualised in terms of its dimensions and dynamics. The integration of the literature study characteristics such as the cognitive, affective, conative and interpersonal characteristics were discussed. The research was conducted among 80 employees at a banking institution. The quality of life questionnaire and performance appraisal ratings were used. The relationship between biographical variables such as age, marital status, gender, qualifications, tenure, functional department and work performance were investigated. The results confirmed the empirical investigation that there was not a significant relationship between work performance and SOC. However, a significant relationship was found between job category and work performance, and between age and work performance. Finally, recommendations made for future research included using a bigger sample size in order to improve the generalisation of the findings to other organisational environments, and to further determine the relationship between other aspects of work performance (not just the KPAs) such as the human attributes of work performance and SOC.<br>Industrial and Organisational Psychology<br>M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Although the merits of practical work in physics are often questioned, it remains part of physics curricula world-wide. In distance education the incorporation of practical work into the curriculum is considerably complicated by the unique logistics of the setting and the high cost involved. The research reported in this thesis emanated from the need to improve the practical work module for first year physics at the University of South Africa, one of the largest distance education universities in the world. Specifically, the home-based component which, up to the commencement of the research had been entirely text-based, needed to be addressed. To this end it was necessary to identify a valid and attainable set of objectives and to determine the characteristics, abilities and needs of the students in the target group. A survey polling the viewpoints of South African physics lecturers and students about the objectives of practical work was conducted and an extensive student profile comprising a biographic, cognitive and affective component was compiled. Biographically, the target group is unique in the sense that it consists mainly of adult learners, a large percentage of whom study in a second language. The cognitive component of the profile covered aptitude, proficiency in English, mathematics and the integrated science process skills and level of cognitive development, all of which were investigated for possible influence on performance in practical work. On an affective level, students displayed a very positive attitude towards practical work, seated mainly in their need for concrete exploration of the theory. A practical work module structured around an experiential learning cycle adapted to the distance education environment was subsequently designed. The study material developed for the module comprised an interactive study guide on data processing and experimental procedure, a home experiment kit with accompanying workbook and a laboratory manual. From the pilot study forming part of the development process, it was found that students performed significantly better in an assignment based on home-experimentation than in any of the pen- and paper assignments preceding it. Based on the results of the pilot study, a full home experiment kit was designed, evaluated, refined and implemented.<br>Physics<br>D.Phil. (Physics)

German text<br>Die Alkoholabhängigkeit ist die am stärksten verbreitete Abhängigkeitserkrankung in Deutschland. Unbekannt ist die Zahl der betroffenen Angehörigen. Nach Erarbeitung not-wendiger theoretischer Grundlagen und Vorstellung aktueller Forschungsergebnisse stan-den narrative Interviews mit Frauen von alkoholabhängigen Partnern im Mittelpunkt der Forschungsarbeit. Durch Datenanalyse und Dateninterpretation mit Methoden der rekon-struktiven Sozialforschung wurde ein tieferes Verständnis für die Lebensgeschichte der beiden ausgewählten Biografinnen gewonnen. Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren konnten diffe-renziert erfasst und resilienzfördernde Maßnahmen für Seelsorge und Beratung abgeleitet werden. Besondere Beachtung fand die Bedeutung des christlichen Glaubens als Resilienz-faktor. Weitere Beobachtungen durch Einbeziehung aller Interviews als Datenmaterial wurden als Hilfen für das Verständnis der Gesamtproblematik ausgewertet. Aus der Dis-kussion der Ergebnisse ergaben sich Handlungsempfehlungen für die christliche Gemeinde und richtungsweisende Impulse für Seelsorge und Beratung. After acquiring theoretical foundations and current research results, my research focused on narrative interviews with wives of alcohol dependent part-ners. By the use of reconstructive social research methods, data analysis and interpretation a deeper understanding of the life history of the two selected biographers was obtained. After detecting risk and protective factors, resilience promoting factors for pastoral care and counselling could be derived. Special attention was paid to the importance of Christian faith. For an understanding of the overall problem, all interviews were included as data material and evaluated. Au Canada, 52,2 % des enfants placés en foyers d’accueil sont autochtones, alors qu’ils ne comptent que pour 7,7 % de l’ensemble des enfants au pays (Statistiques Canada, 2016). En comparaison de leurs homologues allochtones, les mères autochtones sont plus souvent signalées en protection de la jeunesse (PJ) et tenues responsables de négligence à l’égard de leurs enfants (ÉCI – 2008 ; Sinha, Ellenbogen, and Trocmé, 2013). Les politiques coloniales, la violence institutionnalisée, les conditions socioéconomiques précaires et les difficultés parentales expliquent une part de ces constats (CVRC, 2015 ; Sinha, Trocmé, Fallon et al., 2011). D’autres études suggèrent que les incompréhensions entre les mères autochtones et l’institution de la PJ non seulement perdurent, mais tendent également à s’accentuer (Cull, 2006 ; Gosselin, 2006 ; Veenstra et Keenan, 2017). Malgré ces écarts de perspectives de part et d’autre quant aux valeurs et repères culturels qui fondent la parentalité autochtone, peu d’études qualitatives ont cherché à entendre la voix des actrices concernées afin d’éclairer leurs points de vue et de mieux comprendre leur expérience en contexte de PJ (Bennett, 2009 ; MacDonald, 2002 ; Soumagnas, 2015). Pour combler ces lacunes, la présente étude a pour objectif d’appréhender les fondements qui balisent la parentalité des mères autochtones recevant des services de la PJ et d’explorer de quelle manière leurs savoirs sont reconnus ou valorisés au contact de l’intervention. La présente recherche privilégie un cadre d’analyse constructiviste et mobilise la théorie de Berger et Luckmann (2018) et la théorie de l’action historique de Martin (2003a ; 2009). Ces théories permettent d’appréhender l’expérience des participantes à partir de leur point de vue et de leur propre construction sociale de la réalité. La mise en œuvre de la recherche s’inscrit dans une approche narrative et une méthodologie inductive et interprétative qui met en lumière l’expérience singulière et subjective des participantes. Une collecte de données a été réalisée à l’automne 2016 auprès de neuf mères innues issues d’une même communauté et dont au moins un enfant a fait l’objet de mesures de protection. Des entretiens individuels semi-directifs de type récits de vie ont été recueillis. À l’automne suivant (2017), une seconde phase de collecte de données a pris la forme d’un terrain de restitution et une validation des récits a été réalisée auprès des participantes. Fondé sur des analyses compréhensives (Kaufmann, 2004), le principal constat de l’étude établit la volonté des mères que leurs trajectoires d’adversité, leurs réalités parentales, et leurs manières singulières de concevoir leurs valeurs, leurs rôles et leurs responsabilités de parent, soient davantage pris en compte par les services en PJ. Selon les résultats de l’étude, cette reconnaissance permettrait de prioriser les liens mère – enfant – réseau familial et de garantir la sécurisation culturelle au sein de services qui correspondent mieux aux besoins des mères. En écho aux Appels à l’action de la Commission de vérité et réconciliation (CVRC, 2015), au rapport final de la Commission d’enquête sur les relations entre les Autochtones et certains services publics (CERP, 2019), et au plan de réforme législatif des services en enfance-famille autochtone, les retombées de cette étude visent à donner la parole aux mères, à fournir un éclairage sur la manière de « soutenir un système innu autonome de protection des enfants » (Guay, Grammond et Vollant, 2019 : 1) et à aiguiller les travailleurs sociaux en communauté.<br>In Canada 52.2% of children in foster care age 0 to 14 are Indigenous, while Indigenous children represent only 7.7% of all children in the country (Statistics Canada, 2016). Compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts, Indigenous mothers are more frequently reported to youth protection services (YP) and more often held responsible for neglecting their children (CIS-2008 ; Sinha, Ellenbogen and Trocmé, 2013). Colonial policies of dispossession, assimilation, institutionalized violence, precarious socio-economic conditions, and parental difficulties of addiction and psychological distress; account for some of these findings (TRCC, 2015; Sinha, Trocmé, Fallon et al., 2011). Furthermore, studies suggest that these trends persist and are exacerbated by differing perspectives between Indigenous mothers and YP institutions, regarding the foundational values, beliefs, and realities that underlie Indigenous parenthood (Cull 2006 ; Gosselin 2006 ; Veenstra and Keenan 2017). Despite the apparent difficulties which arise due to the differing perspectives regarding the cultural values, beliefs and realities surrounding Indigenous parenthood, few empirical studies have sought to hear the voices of the mothers in order to shed light on their points of view and better understand their experiences with the YP services (Bennett 2009 ; MacDonald 2002 ; Soumagnas 2015). In an effort to fill this gap, this qualitative study aims to understand the perspectives of parenthood held by Indigenous mothers and explore whether they consider that their perspectives are recognized and valued by child welfare services during times of intervention. This research favours a constructivist analytical framework and mobilizes Berger and Luckmann’s (2018) theories and Martin's Historical Action (2003a ; 2009). These theories allow for the understanding of participant’s experiences from their points of view and from their own social construction of reality. The implementation of the research is part of a narrative approach and an inductive and interpretive methodology that highlights the singular and subjective experience of the participants. As part of the study, a data collection phase was conducted in Fall 2016 with nine Innu mothers from the same community, of whom (at least) one child was apprehended. Semi-directed individual interviews, such as biographical narratives, were collected. A second phase of restitution and validation of the stories was completed in Fall 2017. Based on a comprehensive analyses (Kaufmann, 2004), the main finding of this study demonstrates that given respondent’s trajectories of adversity, parental realities, and their singular ways of conceiving their parental values, roles and responsibilities, YP should adapt to take Indigenous cultural perspectives into account. Furthermore, the study suggest that this acknowledgment would prioritize mother – child – family network ties and ensure cultural safety in services that better meet the needs of mothers. In regards to the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC, 2015) ; investigation reports on Indigenous public relations (CERP, 2019) ; and the legislative reform plan for Indigenous children and family services, this study aims to give a voice to mothers, provide insight on how to « support an autonomous, child protection innu system » (Guay, Grammond et Vollant, 2019 : 1), and orientate community social workers.

Text in German, summaries in English and German<br>Alter und Altern gilt in Deutschland derzeit als eines der wichtigsten Zukunftsfelder wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Dabei liegt ein besonderes Augenmerk auf der nachberuflichen Lebensphase, dem so genannten dritten Lebensalter. Eine Gesellschaft des um 20-30 Jahre verlängerten Lebens bei meist guter Gesundheit ist kulturgeschichtlich ein neues Phänomen für das es keine Vorbilder gibt, so dass der jetzigen Generation der „jungen Alten“ eine gestalterische Aufgabe für sich und die Nachfolgegenerationen zukommt. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Thema Altern zunächst aus humanistischer und daran anschließend aus biblisch-theologischer Sicht. Diese beiden Kapitel enthalten grundlegende Aussagen zum Thema Altern aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und beziehen diese, wo möglich, aufeinander. Sie bilden die Grundlage und Voraussetzung für das Folgekapitel, in dem Bedeutung, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Biografiearbeit als praktisch-theologisches Bildungsangebot in der pastoralen Begleitung von Menschen in der nachberuflichen Lebensphase untersucht werden. Dabei wird offensichtlich, dass sowohl gerontologische Literatur als auch biblische Texte Biografiearbeit an einschneidenden Wendepunkten des Lebens als eine wichtige Voraussetzung für gelingendes Leben darstellen. Der Person und der Professionalität der Anleiterin kommen in dem Prozess biografischer Selbstreflexion mit älteren Menschen eine tragende Rolle zu.<br>Old age and the process of aging is currently one of the most important fields for future scientific study and research. Special focus is centered on the post-career phase. A society where life is prolonged for an extra 20 to 30 years, most of which are spent in reasonably good health, is culturally speaking a recent phenomenon for which there are no historical models. It follows, that the current generation bears a great responsibility in shaping and moulding this stage in their lives not only for themselves but also for future generations. This dissertation concentrates on the theme of aging, first from a humanistic point of view, and secondly by focusing on biblical and theological aspects. Both of these chapters contain fundamental and important statements regarding the subject of aging as seen from different disciplines, and, wherever possible, with reference to each other. They build the basis and prerequisite for the following chapter in which the significance and possibilities as well as the limits of biography work is researched in view of pastoral care and training for elderly people in the post employment phase of their life. It becomes obvious, that not only gerontological literature but also biblical texts depict biographical work as an important prerequisite for a life experienced as being successful, especially at drastic turning points in life.
