Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to construct a biography of the French engineer Louis Léger Vauthier from his youth until his memorial posteriority. This Fourierist engineer, who has led some major urban works in the state of Pernambuco during the 1840s, is a personage recognized by Brazilian historiography both by the technical and the cultural role he took. Beyond the years in Brazil, Vauthier was also actively involved in the social and political life of France throughout the nineteenth century, however not with the same visibility. Thus, based on those two main tracks that emerge from Vauthier’s life, i.e. his engineering career and his political and intellectual trajectory, the objective is to understand his itinerary based on the role of the actors within his personal network, established during the different phases of his life. The approach which is proposed here was only possible thanks to the return of the biographical genre in history which allows researchers to replace the traditional, linear, and factual narrative, by a biography as a historical knowledge instrument. Between history and memory, the itinerary of the individual brings some light to the complexity and to the internal contradictions of the two countries involved in this research, but also of the exchanges between a bourgeois France, exporting its cultural model to the world, and Brazil, whose elite where aspiring to modernity while remaining traditional and slaveholding

Abstract: This thesis aims at presenting how the poetry of Mario Quintana developed throughout his career, allowing the strengthening of a poetic consciousness of the author. Having modern poetry and literary criticism theories as a base, the selected texts focus on the metalanguage in this poet's work and meet these thesis specific purposes, such as raising Quintana's poetic aspects. Furthermore, in chapter 2, it was a great challenge to reconstruct the poet's itinerary through texts which address his work by analyzing metalinguistic poems selected from his books published from 1940 to 1990, a total of 13 works. Another important element of the analysis was to consider the texts rewriting and revision/correction process as a self criticism of his own work, which was a constant practice Quintana had since the beginning of his career, seeking the most appropriate expression to his poems. The analyzes are based on theoretical studies of modern poetry theorists, such as Friedrich, Paz, Compagnon, among other authors who deal specially with metalanguage and intertextuality, such as Campos, Samoyault, Perrone-Moisés. Cândido, Barbosa and Lyra's works are also important references for this study development. Throughout this study, it was possible to identify the creation process and the variations in the poetry through comparative analyzes of texts found in the poet's personal collection and selected for this purpose. By the end, it was possible to identify a poetry theory constructed over concepts which modulate and seek an increasingly accuracy

Abstract: The presente work describes the ways in which the historical personage Anita Garibaldi went through transforming into heroine, from her death in the year 1849 to the year 1999. The cut goes through two centuries, but the vision of Anita as a heroine was slow to manifest, perceiving sifnificant changes from the mid-twentieth century. The period passes through the Republic, the immigration of the italians until the commemorations of 500 years of discovery of Brazil, which launches the biography of Paulo Markun, "Anita Garibaldi - a brazilian heroine" (1999). Two others biographies will also be analyzed in order to compose Anita´s understanding as heroine: Anita Garibaldi (1975) by Wolfgang Ludwig Rau and an autobiography by Giuseppe Garibaldi edited by Alexandre Dumas "Memories of Garibaldi" (1860). In addition to the biographies that contemplate different moments of the journey to the traversedin search of Anita - heroine, documents that collaborate to analyze the context, the origin of the source and, finally, the transformation process of the Brazilian heroine. Military statements were found that fougth on the opposite side of the Garibaldi couple, where they boasted of Anita and her courage as early as the 19th century. Newspapers such as the "Correio Mercantil" in Rio de Janeiro, "The Federation" in Porto Alegre an "Diário da Tarde" in Curitiba were able to contribute not only to staments by people, but also to plays about Anita, memories of decades and centenarians of dea... Full textIn the second half of the nineteenth century, women who dare to write and publish are still very few. Faced with a society that rejects them or treats them as blue bottoms, they are looking for solutions and those they find are either to hide under the appearance of men and publish under pseudonym, to be against, deepen the feminine and write a literature of the self: journal, autobiography, novel letter writer. Margareta Miller-Verghy (1865-1953), a writer ignored by literary histories, who is among the first French-speaking Romanian writers, begins her literary career publishing under pseudonym. Her novels, including the last one, "Blandina", appear posthumous and in Romanian translation testify to this literature with a strong autobiographical dimension. Her destiny goes back two centuries and can be considered representative for the path that the female writers travel from the time of contempt and mistrust of the nineteenth century to the full acceptance in the twentieth century.Margareta Miller-Verghy was born in Jassy, Romania, but spent her childhood and later her youth in Geneva, not only in a French environment, but also in a multilingual one. This explains her penchant for foreign languages and her talent as a translator, which she makes use of when translating into French the work of Mihail Eminescu, the greatest Romanian poet. After a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, while still in Geneva, she became director of the Elena Doamna Asylum in Bucharest and in this quality she published books with didactic content, including a method of learning French, which is among the premieres of this kind. Her writing career began in 1883 with a short story published under the pseudonym Marmil and continued with three novels, the first, Theano, published in Romania and France in 1919 and respectively in 1921, the second "Cealaltă lumină" ("The Other Light"), in 1944, a testimony of the accident in which she lost her eyesight, and the last "Blandina" (1980), which is actually the first of this autobiographical cycle. Apart from this activity in the field of literature, she advocates for women's literature, publishing an anthology entitled "Evoluția scrisului feminin în România" ("Evolution of the female writing in Romania"). She is interested in arts, directs for twenty years an institution that organizes cultural projects, The House of Art, and has a significant charitable activity, especially during the First World War.In order for her work, which is so diverse and so complex, to be known and appreciated by future generations, the very laborious research we have carried out in the archives must be expanded by editing and re-editing. To continue this study with a monography, with a new edition of the novel "Blandine", with an edition of gathered works seems to us a duty for the years to come

Full textBiographical writing is presented as one of the major practices of contemporary French literature. A practice interpreted as a reappearance aiming to correlate the revival of individualism and the contamination of the present regime of historicity with an obsession of the past. One of the multiple forms of contemporary life writing is « biographical fiction » which links the authors in their desire to restore the life of the Other past within texts indicated by their reluctance in respect with the codes of the standard biography. Far from this rich landscape in expressions, biography could not easily be expressed in contemporary Persian literature. This difference arises the question of knowing the reasons which distinguish the fate of the biographical genre in the French and Iranian contexts. To outline some elements of the answers, this thesis proposes both a contextual historical study and an intercontextual sociological comparison: the first draws up a table of biographical expressions forms in Persian literature to draw a line of evolution; the second provides the opportunity to bring together two social contexts and two literary systems, to talk about the elements that support or hinder the biographical production beyond the auctorial ambition. However, a textual analysis is in charge of highlighting this auctorial ambition through the vehicle that each author takes to respond to the generic challenges of biographical writing in the romantic regime

Antonio Silvino, "From Governor of backwoods to Governor of Detention" (1875-1944) is a work that came from the desire to understand who the “cangaceiro” Antonio Silvino was, from the vision of newspapers that were read by an educated class and the “cordéis” that had reached a population of little education. This study aimed to construct a biography, in which I tried to be aware of the nomination given in the documents related to the bandit, the historical context and the representations assigned to the newspapers from Recife, the public documents and the “cordéis” by Francisco das Chagas Batista and Leandro Gomes de Barros, in each stage that I described Antonio Silvino‟s life. The exercise now presented does not cover the whole subject of his biography, it would be an impossible thing to do, as well as the writing of history is an interim response about the past, and so is the biographical writing. I wanted to perform a theoretical and methodological discussion based on studies of cultural history and the construction of biographies, which are already being debated since the 1970s. This work is divided into four chapters. The first presents the historical context in which Manuel Baptista de Moraes was born, Antonio Silvino‟s real name. In the second, I analyze the actions of the bandit from 1900 on, when he takes on as the head of a gang, until his arrest in 1914. The third one is about the spectacle that was made about his arrest and on the individuals who acted on it. The fourth chapter focuses Silvino‟s routine in the Casa de Detenção in Recife, analyzing his behavior changes and his desires in jail, concluding with his freedom and the ending of his days in 1944, in the city of Campina Grande - PB. The research has shown the possibility of understanding the “cangaceiro” beyond the image of hero and villain, „cause reconstruct the fragmented life of this cangaceiro” allowed a visualization of this man from a human‟s point of view and realize that he was a man with a political nature.
Full textWhenever uninvited guests occupying a house destroyed by fire start to dismantle its leftovers in order to brick the remaining windows, the time has come to expel them with more or less friendly words, since their sole purpose is to prevent new guests from approaching the premises. In order to do so, it is, of course, necessary to remove whatever hangings there might be left on the wall, both old and new, and by means of this very banishment of all which doesn’t inherently belong to the place, it is possible to retain a pleasant image of poet Friedrich Hölderlin – who may have gotten into the way for some of the more influential ones of his contemporaries not only poetically, but also in terms of interpersonal dynamics, both of which caused his eventual disaster. Neither in terms of family relationships, nor in the context of his poetic affairs was he capable of defend himself against the intrigues directed against him. „So sind die Zeichen in der Welt“ is a somewhat longer essay, which neither intends to put the poet on a pedestal, nor to create an adorable pop star. Its intention is to excavate some of the frescoes of the construct of ideas Hölderlin consists today, and to do so for those whose idea of the poet has not yet been buried entirely under the image of the poet gone insane. Although this study consciously chooses to pursuit an approach similar to the one of Pierre Bertaux, it also maintains a critical stance towards this line of interpretation by using not only biographic connotations, but also methods borrowed from the critique of ideology and style in order to make the sometimes confusing current state of source material somewhat more transparent as it has hitherto been the case. It also wants to transcend this approach, which can appear unorthodox in some respects, by suggesting ways of dealing with Friedrich Hölderlin in the curriculum of German secondary schools, which includes even newer material referring to the fact to which extent this poet’s marginalization is caused by his being held responsible for things he neither wrote nor meant during a long period of literary history. The overall intention of this study is the idea that Hölderlin’s body of thought has to be removed from the mainstream of conservative readings (including Elfriede Jelineks dramatic adaptation „Wolken. Heim.”, even if its intentions should be more recalcitrant) and that this poet has to be rehabilitated as a realist thinker who eschewed the literary “scene” of his time because he understood – and counteracted – quite early its rejection of the French Enlightenment and revolution – a rejection which has always been difficult for him to bear. Since Friedrich Hölderlin is, however, not only exposed to ideologically biased reflection, criticism and corruption, but also consists a subject of extensive biographic and psychologic speculation on a regular basis, this aspect has been researched not only with respect to the reception history of his works, but also inherently to the subject. In this context, it was not only possible to reconstruct the hitherto neglected relationship between Hölderlin and Sophie Mereau and to reject the suspicion of a simultaneous homoerotic relationship with Isaak Sinclair. It was also established that the poet’s affair with Susette Gontard was neither singular nor unrivaled, which rules out a doubtless correlation between this woman and the poetic figure of Diotima. In order to make this possible, it was necessary to both demythologize the idea of platonic love during the Frankfurt years, as well as to put this affair in context with Hölderlin’s romantic relationships with other women, which Gontard unsuccessfully tried to come to terms with by taking possession of the Diotima persona. Doing so substantiated the suspicion that the poet’s most stable bond with a woman was the one with his own sister Heinrike, with whom he had an emotionally overflowing, if unfrequent exchange of letters at least until the Bordeaux caesura. It is not without irony that “Hälfte des Lebens” of all poems – the one Hölderlin is maybe known best for and that is regularly considered a significant philosophic outline – contains fragments of a text that clearly features erotic connotations, the recipient of which is Hölderlin’s own sister.

Full textAn individual develops his life in a collective context, where he advances throughout his life and becomes different according to his family, his character, his meetings and influences. An individual existence which differentiates people also constitutes a collective living. There are many observable factors in a collectivity which can influence the building of this existence: sex, religion, family, brothers and sisters, physical appearance, schooling, incomes, politics or psychological state. An analysis can be done throughout three hundred biographies of the two last centuries personalities. Then, the opposite procedure will be developed to measure what collectiveness can add or substract to an individual in his own existence building. Variants that characterize a person are defined with precision, there are the basis of a theorical and general formulation. This study ends in the synthesis of four recent approaches: “fractal geometry”, sensitiveness to the initial conditions, reduction structural building and finally theory of catastrophes

In the last twenty years, the historiografic production directed properly toward the History of the Brazilian Education has increased of significant form. The research most recent in this field of study demonstrates that the educators come proceeding the necessary revisions in the treatment from the theoretical questions and method. What also it verifies with the magnifying of the cognitivos procedures, of the search of new objects and new problems, is that the historians of the education are extending its documentary sources, abandoning the accurate affirmations on the past and the future and adopting each time more the retrospect reflections, the autocritic, the reevaluation of the sources, problemize the process of reconstruction of the memories to understand the past in its complexity, density and ambiguity. The elaboration of a new biography of Pedro AmÃrico de Figueiredo e Melo (1843-1905) follows this reasoning and makes to emerge, through exegesis of the literary, philosophical texts and scientific produced by him between1864 and 1905, its participation in the debate enter on the construction of pedagogical boardings for the education of the art, of its defense for the dissemination of the knowledge and the access of the Brazilian population to the national and international artistic production by means of the public and gratuitous school. For being, at the same time, tributary and creditor of the spirit of the time, the literary production of Pedro AmÃrico express conceptual unit, theoretical, aesthetic and ethical that assumes singular importance in our intellectual and educational scene. In this manner, this new biography aims at to contribute for the preservation of the memory of the Brazilian educational history in the second half of XIX century.

This dissertation discusses about how the differences arise and are negotiated in the obituaries of a newspaper in Curitiba, PR. In order to do so, I am interested on the process of biographies’ production and circulation, especially how they reflect on their own moral values and group norms. The narratives that constitute these biographies depart from a game of information between the family, the journalistic production and the announcement to the public, which refer to notions of mourning, honor and tribute after death. The plots created from these narratives reveal commons axis to these trajectories. However, they are not free of tensioning as a result of disagreement possibilities, as well as the difference affirmation. Therefore, the social markers of difference are not silenced in these obituaries. They may even create discontinuities and new meanings for written biographies.

This thesis aims at presenting how the poetry of Mario Quintana developed throughout his career, allowing the strengthening of a poetic consciousness of the author. Having modern poetry and literary criticism theories as a base, the selected texts focus on the metalanguage in this poet´s work and meet these thesis specific purposes, such as raising Quintana´s poetic aspects. Furthermore, in chapter 2, it was a great challenge to reconstruct the poet´s itinerary through texts which address his work by analyzing metalinguistic poems selected from his books published from 1940 to 1990, a total of 13 works. Cândido, Barbosa and Lyra´s works are also important references for this study development. Throughout this study, it was possible to identify the creation process and the variations in the poetry through comparative analyzes of texts found in the poet´s personal collection and selected for this purpose. By the end, it was possible to identify a poetry theory constructed over concepts which modulate and seek an increasingly accuracy

CAPES
It is believed that a text subtitled as "a biography" consistis of the the portrayal of one's life centered in a given time place, relating facts which are proven to recall his or her lifetime from origin to death. Throughout her career, British writer Virginia Woolf has reflected upon the issue of biography not only in its representation in its representation in fiction:she has broadened the theme in essays as "The New Biography"(1927), and "The Art of Biography"(1932)."Orlando:a biography",actually a novel, takes place in the year of 1928, situated between the publication of the aforementioned essays which are key to this work.Once Orlando is bom,the narrative's main character slides along more than three centuries of history and literature: being a poet, he intends to accomplish his master piece,"The Oak Tree";under one name and inside one body, he goes from men to woman; is faced with the lethargy of Victorian times; confronts the prudishness of the time regarding gender and sexuality; in addition, his story reveals, beyond Woolf's biographical reality, the connotation of the games in which literary writing is engaged. Metaliterature is taken in its self-reflective nature, that is, literature revolving around itself in a vast system of mirroring. The aim of this work, then, engenders the analysis of this novel under the scope of metaliterature. Thus, we have attempted to approach the literary and fiction theories through the epistemological contributions of Roland Barthes (1979), Michel Foucault (2001), Linda Hutcheon (1991), Gustavo Bernardo (2010); moreover, regarding the criticism of Orlando, the works of Hermione Lee (1999), Quentin Bell (1972), Monique Nathan (1989) e Maud Manonni (1999) were of utmost importance.
