Pujade, Laura. "Development of a biomarker panel for identifying stressed marine mammals." Scholarly Commons, 2019. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3587.

Abstract:
Increasing anthropogenic disturbance in marine ecosystems such as fishing, oil-drilling, and noise pollution can have detrimental effects on the reproduction and survival of apex predators such as marine mammals. Stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, resulting in increased circulating glucocorticoid (GCs) hormones, which alter expression of target genes encoding metabolic enzymes and other mediators of stress. Prolonged HPA axis stimulation may increase catabolism of nutrient stores and suppress immune and reproductive functions, impacting the fitness of marine mammal

Heart failure (HF) is a severe complication that affects 26 million people world-wide the lack of early screening programs in HF hinders early detection and targeted treatment and hence contributes greatly to the deaths associated with HF. By using human saliva as an alternative medium, a multi-protein biomarker panel were discovered using Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical fragment ion spectra – Mass Spectrometry (SWATHMS). This panel was further validated and demonstrated excellent diagnostic performance with an overall accuracy of 84%. The finding in this thesis has the potent

Background: Juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) is a rare, severe multisystem autoimmune disease affecting the kidney (Lupus Nephritis, LN) in up to 80% of children. Numerous individual urinary biomarkers have previously been investigated. No individual biomarker has achieved ‘excellence’ in differentiating active from inactive LN. Aims: (1) To assess performance of traditional clinical biomarkers for LN monitoring and prediction of LN outcomes. (2) To select biomarkers warranting assessment in a ‘LN biomarker panel’; to cross-sectionally assess if combining novel/traditional bi

Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus triples the risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD). The manifestations of CHD are more severe in patients with diabetes with both more extensive and more diffuse disease. Outcomes in patients with diabetes are significantly worse both in terms of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) overall and specifically following revascularisation procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Furthermore patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are excluded from the vast majority of cardiology trials and therefore there is a lack of data for these patients.

Abstract:
Epithelial ovarian cancer accounts for 5% of all cancer deaths and greater than 50% of all gynaecological cancer deaths. It presents at a late clinical stage in more than 60% of patients, and is associated with a 5-year survival of only 30% in this group. In contrast, the 5-year survival for patients with organ-confined stage I ovarian cancer exceeds 90%, and most patients are cured of their disease. Thus, the detection of early stage ovarian cancer is the best way to improve survival. No clinically applicable method exists for the early detection of ovarian cancer. Hence, there is an unmet me
