Abstract:
To be successful in sustainable building design, architects must consider energy efficient design strategies in the early design stage. Unfortunately, many architects still rely on simplified analysis, synthesis techniques, and historical examples. Although, building energy simulations are becoming more common in the design of buildings, architects rarely use simulation in the early design stage. The "Bioclimatic" charts have been used in the early design stage to define potential building design strategies to achieve indoor thermal comfort. Currently, many architects use the Givoni-Milne bioclimatic design chart (Milne and Givoni, 1979), which was developed based on principle reasoning and heuristics. There have been many attempts to develop computerized programs to further the bioclimatic analysis; however, there have been very limited efforts to test and evaluate the design strategies of the chart using simulations of a thermostatically-controlled building. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to promote comfortable buildings that reduce energy use through appropriate building design strategies. The objectives of the research are to develop a more accurate bioclimatic chart for a thermostaticallycontrolled residence by testing and evaluating the Givoni-Milne bioclimatic chart. The analysis is performed with DOE-2.1e program (Winkelmann, 1993) and TMY2 weather data (Marion and Urban, 1995) for several climates. To achieve these objectives, four main tasks were accomplished: 1) investigate the Givoni-Milne Bioclimatic Chart using representative weather data from several climates, 2) analyze and modify the design strategy boundaries using DOE-2 program and TMY2 weather data to simulate the effects of varied conditions of a thermostatically-controlled residence in different climates, 3) compare these new design strategy boundaries to the original Givoni-Milne design strategy boundaries, and 4) develop general guidelines for the new bioclimatic chart. In summary, there were some differences in the results from the Givoni-Milne bioclimatic chart and the DOE-2 simulation results. These results imply that without further modification, the G-M Chart may have only a limited use for a thermostaticallycontrolled residence. Therefore, to improve the usefulness of the bioclimatic chart the new bio-climatic chart for choosing design strategies for a thermostatically-controlled residence in the hot-humid climate of Houston, Texas, was developed. This new bioclimatic chart for a thermostatically-controlled residence will be a useful tool for architects and engineers in the early design stage. Similar versions of the new bioclimatic for other climates could then be developed.

Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1996.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 173-175).<br>This thesis explores a holistic design process through which architectural elements can engage the dynamic forces of natural phenomena and integrate the spatial and temporal experience of building form with its physical environment. The framework for this exploration is a contextual mapping of dynamical systems and complexity theory to the processes of architectural design. By incorporating concepts and methods from the study of non-linear dynamics, a broad base of scientific knowledge aimed at understanding physical behavior in nature, this thesis proposes a synthetic relationship between architectural elements, their physical performance in the context of natural phenomena, and their contribution to a coherent spatial structure. Modern technological imperatives have rephrased the sensible relationships between architecture, climate, and inhabited space as a problem for "environmental controls". The contemporary urban office building, under economic pretenses, exhibits a particular over-dependence on external machinery for light, ventilation, and thermal comfort, often to the detriment of physical experience. This thesis emphasizes the use of scientific knowledge and computational tools in the early processes of design in an attempt to investigate the manifestations of physical energy -- light, air, and heat --in the building's final form. By addressing these physical performance criteria as spatial influences during preliminary design, this thesis supports an integrated framework for professional collaboration and examines a cultural context for the application of architectural knowledge. A bioclimatic approach to design, therefore, is a synthetic response to the dialectic between the tectonics of physical experience and the dynamics of the natural environment.<br>by Matthew J. Abstract:
ABSTRACT At a time where the planet is facing one of its major global crises, re-thinking of systems in every sector is needed. In the field of energy at its global meaning, various ways of action are considered. In this context, housing sector represents a key point of new conception of our society. Nowadays buildings are no longer considered only as designed housing "objects". Comfort, consumption, environmental impacts are part of the words which appear utterly linked to every single building. Thermal behaviour tends to be as much important as architectural and structural concerns. Indeed, energy savings have become one of the most talked about parameters of a building. Through this paper, key parameters of a building will be compared in order to obtain the most effective houses depending on their location. Nevertheless, comfort will be studied too because of its increasing importance in modern society. The results will be obtained according various aspects: technical ones, environmental ones and financial ones. For all those houses meeting the French standards, similar comparison will be made. Thus the approach will not be organised one house after another but through the impact of one parameter after another to draw the final comparison between the three houses according to the same parameters. Keywords: energy consumption, CO2 emissions, sustainable systems, bioclimatic buildings

Abstract:
iDuring the past twenty years, China has been making dramatic progress in both the quality and the quantity of collective housing construction. However, many old problems still exist, and many more new problems have emerged, especially in some historical and compact but now fastgrowing cities, such as Suzhou, a 2500-year historic city with more than one million people. The objective of this study is to explore a design strategy to improve the collective dwelling environment --- the most popular dwelling type in China today --- in such a fast growing context. In order to provide an improvement in urban dwelling environments for residents, it is necessary to rethink the interaction between the individual resident and his or her dwelling. "Because building a house is a cultural phenomenon, its form and organization are greatly influenced by the cultural milieu to which it belongs."' In concurrence with this statement, this study examines not only the contemporary urban situation and typical residential environment but also the traditional urban fabric and housing settlement.Based on the principle that a harmonious environment results from "a whole range of sociocultural factors"Z, this study seeks several equilibriums: between the urban tissue and the building, between the building and the dwelling, between nature and the human being. The author's longterm goal is to apply the knowledge gained in this study in future practice. In the first part of this report, theoretical research is presented concerning the evolution of Chinese housing. Narrowing its geographical focus, this study selects Suzhou, a medium-size city at Yangtze Delta --- one of the most rapidly growing and developing plains in China --- as the site for the study. The historical dwelling pattern and current public housing style have been studied. Drawing on extensive research and field observation, the scope of the study is confined to rebuilding the harmony between human beings in all their diversity and common needs, and the morphological, functional and environmental aspects of residential environments. In the second part, a design model is proposed. Inspired by traditional interdisciplinary design strategies, as well as by a brief study of contemporary social needs, the author has proposed a new housing type: bio-climatic "atrium type" collective housing. This type links bioclimatic design principles to the framework of Open Building. On this basis, an experimental design proposal is next presented. In a specific site, it examines a way to help people exercise control of their immediate living environment, with both individual and social sustainable perspectives in mind.<br>Department of Architecture

Harmalkar, Chinmay. "Dynamic viscoelastic model of the Hydro Muscle and the control of a multi-fiber Hydro Muscle actuated bionic ankle." Digital WPI, 2017. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/406.

Full text
Abstract:
The Hydro Muscle is a soft linear actuator which utilizes hydraulic pressure and elastic properties of its core for actuation. The Hydro Muscle has been recruited to actuate bio-inspired robot systems using a classic set point tracking feedback control system. A more efficient method is to develop a model-based control system which uses a dynamic model of the Hydro Muscle. The dynamic behavior of the Hydro Muscle which describes the relation between the forces exerted to the resultant motion can be studied with the help of a dynamic viscoelastic model. A dynamic viscoelastic model defines the force exerted by the Hydro Muscle as a function of the hydraulic pressure, the tensile expansion of the Hydro Muscle and the rate of its tensile expansion. Multivariable linear regression is employed to generate a model to relate fluid pressure, tensile expansion, and the rate of tensile expansion to the force exerted by the Hydro Muscle. The developed model can be utilized to implement a model-based control algorithm for the force control of individual joints. This model-based control design could be extended to systems involving multiple Hydro Muscles to allow for a modular control system. The design and test of multi-fiber Hydro Muscle actuated biologically inspired ankle is considered to study control strategies for multi-fiber system. A set-point tracking control algorithm with a proportional differential controller is used to minimize the tracking error. Modular force variation with sequential recruitment of Hydro Muscle is studied.

Abstract:
So-called CF-FM bats are highly mobile creatures who emit long calls in which much of the energy is concentrated in a single frequency. These bats face sensor interpretation problems very similar to those of mobile robots provided with ultrasonic sensors, while navigating in cluttered environments. This dissertation presents biologically inspired engineering on the use of narrowband Sonar in mobile robotics. It replicates, using robotics as a modelling medium, how CF-FM bats process and use the constant frequency part of their emitted call for several tasks, aiming to improve the design and use of narrowband ultrasonic sensors for mobile robot navigation. The experimental platform for the work is RoBat, the biomimetic sonarhead designed by Peremans and Hallam, mounted on a commercial mobile platform as part of the work reported in this dissertation. System integration, including signal processing capabilities inspired by the bat’s auditory system and closed loop control of both sonarhead and mobile base movements, was designed and implemented. The result is a versatile tool for studying the relationship between environmental features, their acoustic correlates and the cues computable from them, in the context of both static, and dynamic real-time closed loop, behaviour. Two models of the signal processing performed by the bat’s cochlea were implemented, based on sets of bandpass filters followed by full-wave rectification and low-pass filtering. One filterbank uses Butterworth filters whose centre frequencies vary linearly across the set. The alternative filterbank uses gammatone filters, with centre frequencies varying non-linearly across the set. Two methods of estimating Doppler-shift from the return echoes after cochlear signal processing were implemented. The first was a simple energy-weighted average of filter centre frequencies. The second was a novel neural network-based technique. Each method was tested with each of the cochlear models, and evaluated in the context of several dynamic tasks in which RoBat was moved at different velocities towards stationary echo sources such as walls and posts. Overall, the performance of the linear filterbank was more consistent than the gammatone. The same applies to the ANN, with consistently better noise performance than the weighted average. The effect of multiple reflectors contained in a single echo was also analysed in terms of error in Doppler-shift estimation assuming a single wider reflector. Inspired by the Doppler-shift compensation and obstacle avoidance behaviours found in CF-FM bats, a Doppler-based controller suitable for collision detection and convoy navigation in robots was devised and implemented in RoBat. The performance of the controller is satisfactory despite low Doppler-shift resolution caused by lower velocity of the robot when compared to real bats. Barshan’s and Kuc’s 2D object localisation method was implemented and adapted to the geometry of RoBat’s sonarhead. Different TOF estimation methods were tested, the parabola fitting being the most accurate. Arc scanning, the ear movement technique to recover elevation cues proposed by Walker, and tested in simulation by her, Peremans and Hallam, was here implemented on RoBat, and integrated with Barshan’s and Kuc’s method in a preliminary narrowband 3D tracker. Finally, joint work with Kim, K¨ampchen and Hallam on designing optimal reflector surfaces inspired by the CF-FM bat’s large pinnae is presented. Genetic algorithms are used for improving the current echolocating capabilities of the sonarhead for both arc scanning and IID behaviours. Multiple reflectors around the transducer using a simple ray light-like model of sound propagation are evolved. Results show phase cancellation problems and the need of a more complete model of wave propagation. Inspired by a physical model of sound diffraction and reflections in the human concha a new model is devised and used to evolve pinnae surfaces made of finite elements. Some interesting paraboloid shapes are obtained, improving performance significantly with respect to the bare transducer.

Abstract:
Composites have now revolutionized most industries, like aerospace, marine, electrical, transportation, and have proved to be a worthy alternative to other traditional materials. However for a further comprehensive usage, the tailorability of hybrid composites according to the specific application needs on a large-scale production basis is required. In this regard, one of the major fundamental research fields here involves a technology development based on the multiaxial warp-knitting technique for the production of bionic-inspired and application-specific textile preforms that are force compliant and exhibit multi-material design. This article presents a newly developed yarn (warp) path manipulation unit for multiaxial warp-knitting machines that enables a targeted production of customized textile preforms with the above characteristics. The technological development cycle and their experimental validation to demonstrate the feasibility of new technology through production of some patterns for different field of applications are then discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract The main objective of this research was to develop practical tools with which it is possible to improve the environment, micro-climate and energy economy of buildings and plans in different climate zones, and take the climate change into account. The parts of the study are: – State of art study into existing know-how about climate and planning. – Study of the effects of climate change on the built environment. – Development of simple micro-climate, nature and built environment analysis methods. – Defining the criteria of an acceptable micro-climatic environment. – Development of the wind test blower. – Presenting ways to interpret test results and draw conclusions. – Development of planning and design guidelines for different climate zones. An important part of the research is the development of the CASE wind test instrument, different wind simulation techniques, and the methods of observing the results. Bioclimatic planning and architectural design guidelines for different climate zones are produced. The analyse tools developed give a qualitative overall view, which can be deepened towards a quantitative analyse with wind testing measurements and roughness calculations. No mechanical rules are suggested, but complementary viewpoints and practices introduced to a normal planning process as well as improvement of consultative knowledge. The “method” is that there is no strict mechanical method, but a deeper understanding of bioclimatic matters. Climate-conscious planning with the developed CASE method, make it possible to design a better micro-climate for new or old built-up areas. Winds can be used in to ventilate exhaust fumes and other pollutants, which improves the quality of air and the healthiness of the urban environment. The analyses and scale-model tests make it possible to shield cold windy areas and to diminish the cooling effect of wind on facades. According to studies in Scandinavian countries this will bring energy savings of 5–15 per cent. The method can be used to: – Evaluation of the cooling effect of wind. Areas and facades exposed to wind. – Evaluation of the wind comfort at the pedestrian level. Windy areas, relative wind speeds. – Enhancing wind-forced ventilation. Positive and negative pressures at the inlets and outlets. – Analysis of the diffusion of pollutants. Ventilation of streets and areas. – Avoiding the damages caused by wind. Planning and designing wind protective solutions. – Characterisation of the wind loading of small and medium-size street architecture items. Designing wind resistant and protective items and plantings. – Analysing the drifting of snow. – Arvioida tuulen vaikutusta jalankulun mukavuuteen. Tuuliset alueet ja suhteelliset tuulennopeudet. – Tehostaa painovoimaista ilmanvaihtoa. Positiiviset ja negatiiviset paineet ilmastoinnin sisäänmeno- ja ulostuloaukoissa. – Analysoida saasteiden leviämistä. Katujen ja alueiden tuulettaminen. – Torjua tuulen aiheuttamia tuhoja. Kaavoittaa ja suunnitella tuulelta suojaavia ratkaisuita. – Luonnehtia pieniin ja keskikokoisiin ulkona oleviin rakenteisiin kohdistuvia tuulikuormia. Suunnitella tuulenkestäviä ja suojaavia rakennelmia ja istutuksia. – Analysoida lumen kinostumista. Lumiaitojen sijoittelu

Abstract:
In sub-Saharan African countries, the energy context, the high urban growth, inadequate construction techniques and climate offer great potential for bio-climatic approach and sustainable construction particularly on the energy level. However, this potential and the use of passive cooling techniques are weakly explored. To do so, it requires a good knowledge of building’s behaviour and their adaptation to the climatic context. As part of our contribution to this issue, a study on the thermal behaviour of buildings is initiated by numerical simulation. Indeed the building’s energy performance simulation tools are becoming more essential in the building’s design processes and analysis. Investigations are conducted on a building built with typical materials in Burkina Faso by following two main approaches. In the first approach a model of the building is faced with measurements from field experiments on the building. A calibration methodology based on the sensitivity analysis and optimization has been applied for the comparison of results. This helped to calibrate the model and diagnostic studies are performed. In the second approach, investigations on methods which can help to improve the building performance are realized through the application building performance simulation as a design aid tool. Interoperability and optimization techniques are used to deal with passive cooling techniques and their impacts on the building thermal behaviour are assessed. Finally in this work analysis techniques and performance criteria are used to characterize and make recommendations on building designs for the tropical climate context

The exploratory and correlational research consisted of the development, application and evaluation of a teaching strategy, based on the above-mentioned methodology, for a 6th semester class of an Architecture and Urbanism course, in the discipline “Environmental Comfort”, turning the classroom into a design studio. The evaluation of the students was done through an individual test and through the evaluation of groups’ projects, elaborated during the activities proposed in the classroom. As dependent variables, learning outcomes were identified by quantitative evaluation (grades) and qualitative evaluation (cognitive levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy). As independent ... The study was conducted in the central area of Fortaleza characterized as a stable and consolidated area, where the city originated and currently faces serious problems in its urban dynamics. The points of measurements were determined by the elaboration and analysis of topography maps, height of buildings, land use, type of surface coating and vegetation, following the methodology of Katzschner (1997). A zoning map was then determined, according to common morphological characteristics of the 12 measurement points, which were based on a set of Romero s (2001) bioclimatic criteria. Air measurements, temperature, humidity, intensity and direction of winds were made in transect form in two different circuits in the study area, with six points of data collection in each area, in three different times: 6:00 am, 1:00pm and 7:00pm, during two periods of the year: August 2008 and March 2009. The results verified the influence of different environmental-physical types in the behavior of the climatic variables that were collected. The highest average air temperature and lower humidity were recorded at the point I at all times. This situation may have been in result of the high density, poor vegetation and extended paving of the ground. According to the results, it s clear the positive influence vegetation has on easing air temperature. Another indicator observed that areas with a greater variation in building heights tend to present decreased average air temperature. High rise structure, planned in accordance to urban air quality parameters, can reduce air temperatures by the shading of urban spaces and the possibility of greater penetration of natural ventilation<br>Esta pesquisa apresenta um estudo que investiga a correla??o entre os componentes f?sico-ambientais das cidades e a forma??o dos seus micro-climas.

Abstract:
In Brazil, the lack of meteorological data is an issue in order to apply a bioclimatic approach for building design. As one of the consequences, designers frequently apply general climate data from one region to another rather than specific data for design strategies purposes. However, this general climate data not necessarily represent accurately microclimatic conditions for different cities even when they are part of the same region. Facing this, this work discusses design strategies for bioclimatic housing in Maceió, Palmeira dos Índios and Pão de Açúcar, located in different geographical mesoregions in Alagoas, in order to adapt to local climate, to thermal comfort, energy efficiency and sustainability of the living space. The methodological steps were: choice of cities, field research, meteorological data evaluation and buildings design recommendations discussion. Meteorological data for approximately ten years was used, obtained from INMET (National Institute of Meteorology) and processed by statistical analysis and the methods of Test Reference Year (TRY) and Project Typical Day. The results showed that there are differences between the cities, especially about annual temperature range, precipitation and direction of winds. The main bioclimatic strategies recommended were: shading, ventilation and protection from rain for Maceió; shading, ventilation, protection from rain and high-mass in daily use rooms for Palmeira dos Índios and shading, ventilation, high-mass in daily use rooms and evaporative cooling for Pão de Açúcar. Besides that, inconsistencies between the recommendations made by the NBR 15220-3 for cities and the data analyzed were found.<br>Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>No Brasil, a escassez de dados meteorológicos ainda é um desafio e em conseqüência disto, muitas vezes, o clima é desconsiderado ou adotado de maneira generalista na prática arquitetônica.

In this context, there is not only the search for new technologies, but also for new ways of combining them and creating new value generation proposals in their productive chains and, consequently, positively impact the business models used by companies that use these combinations. Thus, this work aims to analyze how the combined application of additive manufacturing and bionic design can be a new business opportunity, given its capacity to impact the way value creation happens in a production chain. In order to do so, the Bionic Aircraft Project was studied, using as a methodological tool the Business Model Canvas, seeking to evaluate the value proposition brought by the combination of these two technologies. This analysis allowed the identification of the main characteristics originated from this combination, which served as the basis for the construction of a framework that illustrates how the major stages of this new business model are interrelated.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The human intuitive search for shelter was the reason for their survival. In this process, the climate takes an outliner role, making the architectonic production unique, which finds in the house its greatest adaptive strategies repository. Even though, throughout history, this repertoire has been forgotten. Concerned about life and its maintenance, the bioclimatic approach constitutes a way to redeem and develop solutions that reinstate architecture and environment. Thereby, it reflects in the architectural design the climate and site consciousness, and embraces, in an interdependent way, the environment and life which singularizes it. The present work investigated the existence of a possible architecture and climate dialogue, born with the primary intention of dwelling in the tropics, through the embodying of bioclimatic strategies by the vernacular architecture of Pilar-AL. The methodology was based in a multiple case study and was developed based on the context and selection of six houses; survey and iconographic material production; measurement of air temperature and relative humidity data; creation of bioclimatic diagrams; simulation of wind and shading behavior; collected data processing and systematization of the results, in which comparisons between architectonic examples obeyed a qualitative approach. The results suggest an efficient bioclimatic response of the studied houses against the considered thermal comfort range in the evaluated period, shading and ventilation. The answers confirm the coherent use of verandas, crafted window design, porous internal partitions, wind permeable roofs, thick external walls protected from sun incidence and light inner walls. Therefore, it was possible to recognize, considering the work&#8223;s limitations, an architectonic repertoire adapted to its climatic context and the importance of the constructive heritage to the cultural enrichment and the strength of the bioclimatic approach in architecture.<br>Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>A intuitiva busca do homem por abrigos foi razão de sua sobrevivência.

Abstract:
The thermal quality of the contemporary building tends to be deteriorated due to aesthetic and economic considerations. Cheap materials which are thermally inappropriate are still rising in new buildings. Actually, the architectural design has been changed. Hence, the orientation is poorly investigated. The interior height of the new buildings is defectively compared to those of traditional houses. In addition, the patio is replaced by a corridor and different parts have already become communicating. Accordingly, the heating and cooling space becomes more and more important. The traditional dwelling, in fact, has a bioclimatic architecture which provides naturally minimal comfort. In our work, we tend to exploit the REVIT software in the residential building simulation in Tunisia and to optimize the modern housing model. Following the REVIT validation of the obtained results and comparing them to TRNSYS and SPREADSHEET ASHRAE, we have already relied on them to assess both housing models (contemporary and traditional). Using REVIT, the evaluation results show that traditional housing are more efficient than contemporary ones particularly during summer period. Then, we optimize the modern models making use of the passive strategies of traditional bioclimatic architecture and the improvement measures in the previous investigations. Numerous tests have been generated applying REVIT software in order to determine various models of contemporary housing which are able to be integrated into the Mediterranean climate. In fact, these tests indicate that REVIT efficiency is based on RTS method in thermal simulation of residential buildings.<br>La qualité thermique des bâtiments modernes a une tendance à se détériorer en raison de considérations esthétiques et économiques.

Abstract:
Both aspirations of users and improvements in the thermal regulation require that the comfort and the energy efficiency of new buildings improve. In addition to these requirements, regulations are strengthening in many fields such as acoustics, fire safety and mechanical performance. The combined effects of these factors are making it increasingly hard to design buildings. This thesis presents a knowledge-aid approach for designing high-performance buildings based on an optimization method. This approach aims to provide clear knowledge of the potential of projects (exploration of various options) for architects and design offices at the beginning of the design that will allow them to design the best possible high-performance buildings. This potential is evaluated using external and internal geometric parameters as well as the energy characteristics of buildings. This approach also allows them to assess geometries and design solutions which are intended to be used for their projects. This approach will be applied to an office building in Lyon, France. For the tested case, the approach obtains quickly efficient solutions and also finds, for some parameters, values to design efficient solutions on part of the Paretofront or in this entire front. This application of the approach also shows that there may be solutions which are close in terms of energy needs and cost but could be very different on design parameters. This problem could influence robustness of the approach but highlights a new problem. This thesis then lays the foundation of a new study on this topic

Abstract:
博士<br>國立雲林科技大學<br>設計學研究所博士班<br>100<br>Coined by a mechanical engineer in the late 1950s, ‘Bionics’ is a new field of knowledge aiming at applying the biological methods/systems to artificial use. With this principle of Bionics, this study takes it to review the process of design, and comes out with the origin and meaning of ‘design’. Every living organism has its natural talent in design. Taking architecture as an example, in order to guarantee the survivability, organisms would apply their experiences learning from the nature to their nests and pass down to their offspring, proved that every living forms have their own unique thinking of architecture in nature. Human, as the being values visual sense more than any others, has the long history of architecture with borrowing the forms from organisms, which can be seen as the application of ‘Bionics’ from the perspective of ‘living forms’.However, the being of living organisms cannot be solely accomplished without taking the environment into account. The ‘Bionics’ in an ecological scope can develop architectural design into something that is more complying with the environment – especially when facing today’s extreme climate, and being more beneficial to both the natural resources and the human beings. Whether it is ‘living bionic’ or ‘ecological bionic’, what we can see here is the inspiration by ‘applying the biological methods/systems to artificial use’ in design. How much of such bionic idea has been taken amongst the architects, and how the architects operate their bionic design is the focus of this study. Bionic architecture today can be seen from the constructions of ‘organism’ and ‘metabolism’: in living forms that would be those of Golden Ratio, New Art and Digital architectures, while in ecological forms would be those such as Ecology and Green architectures. In short, this study takes the concept of bionic design to review the meaning of Bionics in the field of design – particularly architectural design – with different cases of human and animal constructions. In addition to offering the logic of bionic design from analyzing the context of thinking of the subjects while designing bionic architecture, this study also aims to be the pioneer of bionic architecture research, and served as the initial reference for future studies.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>製造科技研究所<br>99<br>This thesis presents a bionic mechanism design for mimicking ant’s walking. The aim of this novel design includes: (1) Design the required leg-linkages to mimic ant’s walking, (2) Use the least number of motors to decrease the total weight and drive the leg-linkages, and (3) Present the control design of walking straight and making a turn, and confirm the feasibility of the design. Firstly, the paths of leg’s end-point and tibia’s end-point are captured from the video of ant’s walking. Then, the required corresponding sets of precision points are chosen from these two paths and taken as the basis for synthesizing the desired linkages. The type of linkages used to synthesize are selected from the potential six-bar-seven-joint kinematic chains based on the required design conditions. The dimensional syntheses of the desired linkages are obtained by the aid of SolidWorks software via its function of setting constrained conditions. The synthesized linkages for mimicking ant’s walking have been simulated in SolidWorks software to check its conformity with the original paths of interesting points. Furthermore, the dimensions of resulted linkages have been confirmed by the analytical synthesis method. The walking and it’s the paths have been confirmed by COSMOS Motion software and, therefore, the feasibility of this novel design is confirmed.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>動力機械工程學系<br>106<br>In the history of human transportation, the wheel plays an important role. Although the wheel has some advantages such as great transmission efficiency and smooth movement, it will be useless when it met with rough road. As a result, some people will design bionic boot to make people can jump and run on the rough road comfortably. However, all of the design of bionic boot is fixed-mechanism. If we can use linkage mechanism to design an angle-changeable mechanism, then we can make the bionic boot has storage and unfold two different shape. Consider the factor of manufacturing and cost, this paper will choose linkage as the direction of research. Using dimension generation to synthesize six-bar mechanism, and take advantage of linkage mechanism with toggle effect, then have some discussion and classification of precise points on our design. The method of synthesize will based on function-generation theory, we will use vector loop and three precise points to figure out α-β-solution-plane after six-bar mechanism be simplified. And finding out appropriate linkage dimension to figure out the most appropriate linkage mechanism design by computer-assistant. In the view of the above –mentioned method, we can have a redesign to current bionic boot. Using the angle between the linkage and main-part mechanism as the constraints, and also consider the appropriate transmission angle and link ratio. In the end, considering the toggle mechanism and analyzing mechanical advantage to make sure the whole linkage has great self-locking-ability, so it may improve the current bionic boot.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>機械工程系機電整合碩士班<br>106<br>This thesis presents a crawling mechanism design for a scorpion, which uses linkages to simulates the actual leg movement of the scorpion videoed in this study. In order to reduce the complexity of controlling, this design uses a 6-bar-7-joint-1-DOF linkage for each leg mechanism. To reduce the weight of whole bionic robot, this design uses only one servo motor to drive the four legs mechanism of each side. Firstly, the crawling motions of the scorpion’s femur, tibia, and tarsus are videoed and tracked by using Photoshop software. The precise positions of femur, tibia, and tarsus of each leg were chosen from the corresponding points in the three path-curves. These precision positions are used to synthesize the dimensions of the required linkages. It then uses the constrained-dimension function provided by SolidWorks Software to synthesize the corresponding linkage’s dimensions, and the analytical synthesis method is also applied to verify those dimensions obtained from the SolidWorks software. The kinematic simulation is also performed via the Motion function provided by SolidWorks software to verify the correctness of the design requirements in kinematics. Finally, edits the required control program of Arduino to drive the robot, and edits the required remote control program for bluetooth as well. Then, uses a 3D printer to print all the parts and the main body (frame) and tail of the bionic scorpion robot, and assembles all the parts with the required control devices together to build the prototype. The testing of the prototype of bionic scorpion robot has performed, and its preliminary result has confirmed the feasibility of this novel design.

The proposed mechanical snake has 9 segments with 8 joints link, each joint is driven by the motor with 2 degrees of freedom movement. The overall design of the mechanical snake with 16 degrees of freedom is achieved by controlling 8 horizontal motors to rotate, like a nearly sinusoidal serpenoid curves, by passive bearing of snake’s bottom and ground friction to drive snake moving forward. The other eight vertical motors are used to complete the snake longitudinal creep forward moving. The control system implements the single chip Holtek HT48E70 as the core of the system, integrated with HT46R24 as motor drives and remote control decoder receiver. The experimental results show the successful completion of the mechanical snake moving forward, backward, looked up, turned around. The contributions of this study include the design of an efficient system to approximate simulation of the mechanical snake's movement, and enhance the snake robot's structure to 8 joints with 9 body segments. The simpler algorithm is proposed to improve the developing efficiency for the software of designing a mechanical snake.

Abstract:
碩士<br>樹德科技大學<br>應用設計研究所<br>93<br>To excel in innovation and renovation of products, and to create products with practical values require creative point of views in product development from the designers. Therefore, this research focuses on how Bionic Design is applied in the conceptual development of product design. The aim is to structure a uniformed way of creative thinking which will encourage imagination in product designs, understanding the traits, elements and the framing of bionics, and the result of nature lives’ simulation. It will also interpret the relationship between product functionality and imitated beings, thus to learn and utilize the characteristics of the beings on better elaboration of the product functions. The research is done on six stages. First, the preface; discusses the background, motivation and goal of this research. The second stage is the examination of the documents; exploration of the theories and review of related researches. The third stage is the adaptation of bionics conceptual product design, which includes three sub-stages of (1) the interpretation of functions, (2) the transformation of product semantics, and (3) the regulation of exterior design. This stage forms three methods of adapting bionics into the concepts of product design: E.A.T, A.E.T, and A.T. The fourth stage is experimenting with this adaptation of bionics; sixty students undergo actual designing process with a forum to discuss the quantity of the design drafts and usage of bionic design keywords. The fifth stage is testing the quality of these drafts, which invites seven experts in the field to pick the ones with decent value. They would also use an independent sample, T, to justify the quality of these drafts. Through examination of documents and detail compiling, this research is able to develop a Bionic Design Element Key Words Diagram, while combining E.A.T, A.E.T and the diagram to structure the three methods of fusing bionics with expanded concepts in products. Based on research and analysis, the Bionic Design Element Key Words Diagram is proven to benefit the development of products, especially in the actual quality of drafts. On the other hand, through application of the diagram, it shows that the key words are often somewhat consequential or related in terms of function. This then illustrates the multiple applications of these key words, rather then applying just a single element. Thus, following this research’s actual designing and verification of the experts, and combined evaluations of the conceptual drafts and increased quality, it is appropriate to say that the most suitable method of incorporating bionic design in the concept development stage of product design is E.A.T.

Although it is undoubted to interpret the functions and images of 3C product with Bionic Design, it is necessary to distinguish the variation from the approach to other kinds of products, and to study its fitness and specific to 3C product. There are two topics in this study: “the investigation of Bionic Design applications to 3C product ” and ”the investigation of the designers’ favor in Bionic Design to 3C product”. The results are as following: 1.Most designers are unfamiliar with Bionic Design principles and the restrictions in Taiwanese industry are the reasons those cause the seldom application of Bionic Design to 3C product. There are two suggestions to the condition, one is that designer should value the significance but appearance of Bionic Design, the other is that for coming up outstanding works with Bionic Design, the concepts should be integrated into the process from design to production. 2.Bionic Design to 3C product not only expresses amusement and vitality, but also futurity and delicacy those are the basic features of 3C product. 3.For creating a reasonable association, it is necessary to transform the feature of the Bionic Design object into the position, function, structure and appearance of 3C product.

However, when trying to design a new product using bionics, it is hard for engineers to find suitable biological references based on their limited biological knowledge. Therefore, this study is motivated to develop a design process so as to assist designers in searching biological samples and inspiring design idea. First, with the aid of text mining techniques, we search suitable biological samples extensively from the internet and establish the preliminary conceptual design. Secondly, by using the technology function matrix analysis, the patentability and infringement of the preliminary conceptual design are assessed, and the prototype design is derived. Next, this study uses TRIZ to resolve conflicts encountered during detailed design process and to improve the prototype. And then, we conduct computer-aided engineering analysis, incorporating with Taguchi method, so as to generate the optimal combination of design parameters. This study uses screen as an example to verify the feasibility and efficiency of this text mining based bionic product design process. The finger mechanism is designed using the structure of human fingers and the stress conditions of various structures during bending. It is based on mechanics and static mechanics, some reasonable size planning is performed to imitate the action of human finger bending. Where in the finger mechanism has a total three joints and one degree of freedom are coupled by two crossed four-bar links to drive the knuckles in a linked manner to reduce the use of servo motors and effectively achieve simplification on the control system. The link structure design can also make full use of the limited space to add additional features. The final result shows that the design of the finger mechanism can provide functions similar to the human grasping motion. By using the Matlab program, the finger mechanism is simulated and analyzed. In addition, in the analysis process this paper proposes a set of applications that can be applied. The design matrix formula of the fully-activated finger mechanism not only contributes to the improvement of the grasping technology, but also solves the potential problem. So that basic capabilities of the current mechanical finger prototype are generally unknown.
