Full textThe final post-graduate work focuses on three different aspects of bionic architecture –i.e. construction, ornamentation and smooth connection with environment. These guidelines are based on definition of bionic architecture. It says that bionic building is the one projected whether under natural decorative motifs or natural structures. However, harmonic composition of the building and the surrounding landscape using different expressions also creates an organic look. Thus the whole work is based on the analysis of the basic features of the bionic buildings. Those distinctive and common features are analyzed and compared together to find the essential ones that reflect the bionic connection. The main cause is to seek and to prove through the research of similarities and differences, that all these edifices, built in different manner, has the same root – bionic architecture.

Full textThe experimental investigations presented herein explain the behavioural adaptation of fish called entrainment for the first time. The results confirm a balance of lift-, drag- and a suction-force, explaining the reduction of locomotive energy. Furthermore, flow measurements around an undulating membrane affirm an oscillation between laminar and turbulent flow over one period of the motion and that this oscillation decreases the pressure- and drag-force of the towed membrane. Experiments on thin and flexible flaps attached at the lee-side of a cylinder, show that the flaps alter the natural vortex separation cycle in such a way that the vortices do not shed in a staggered side-by-side arrangement but in line in a row with the cylinder wake axis. Thus, flow fluctuations are reduced by 42% in stream-wise - and 35% in transversal direction at best, compared to a reference case without hairy-flaps. Finally, investigations on the flow around and on the kinematics of two flexible cylinders in a tandem arrangement demonstrate a synchronisation of their motion (lock-in), resulting in the destruction of the vortex-street behind the second cylinder

Full textThis work deals with a particular class of mobile omnidrive-bionic manipulator robot namely RobotinoXT. It contains a bionic manipulator Compact Bionic Handling Assistant (CBHA) mounted over a mobile omnidrive robot Robotino. We first proposed a forward kinematic model of such a system by using an “arc geometry” method which was validated through a test bench using a trilateration technique. To achieve this purpose, the sensors were calibrated. For the model’s constant parameters calibration problem, this latter was resolved by developing an optimization algorithm which incorporates a SQP method, validated via an industrial manipulator with rigid links. Then, we proposed an inverse kinematic model of the CBHA by assuming that each backbone of it, is assimilated to a parallel robot. This model was validated by real measurements obtained with the industrial manipulator, allowing defining the robot workspace. Finally, we implemented a toolbox which encompasses the models developed in this work

Though there have been remarkable advances in powered prosthesis technology over the past decade, design limitations of commercial electric motors are one of the main bottlenecks in meeting critical device requirements, such as minimum range on a single battery charge and acoustic emission restrictions. Traditional motor design focuses on motor development for operation at specific torques and velocities, but a motor design which minimizes the power loss over the torque-velocity profile of a bionic ankle is more precisely what is needed for our application. Considering the design requirement in this way lays the groundwork for a new design framework. Leveraging this problem statement, we herein develop a new motor design process generalizable to all applications requiring a variable but cyclic torque-velocity profile. We present a motor optimization package for cyclic variable torque-velocity motor design and demonstrate its viability in constrained optimization of a transverse flux motor for use in a bionic ankle. We further evaluate and present the intended use of this transverse flux motor for application in bionic joints, along with advantages and design hurdles of the planned system.
