This consensus study conducted by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) examines the organisational frameworks, legal systems, and infrastructure for laboratory biosafety and biosecurity across the 16 member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Given the critical role of biosafety and biosecurity in preventing the accidental release or misuse of infectious agents, the study aims to assess existing capacities, identify gaps, and propose strategic interventions to strengthen regional preparedness and response to health emergencies.
