ABSTRACT Klebsiella oxytoca 1731, which showed a wide spectrum of resistance to β-lactams, including cefoxitin, was isolated in 1994 from a patient in Genoa, Italy. This strain contained a plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase with a pI of 7.25. Sequencing of the corresponding DNA of K. oxytoca 1731 revealed 96 and 97% identities of the deduced amino acid sequence with FOX-1 and FOX-2, respectively.

Abstract:
Klebsiella spp. is a relevant pathogen that can present acquired resistance to almost all available antibiotics, thus representing a serious threat for public health. While most studies have been focused on isolates causing community-acquired and nosocomial infections, little is known about the commensal isolates colonizing healthy subjects. We describe the molecular identification and the phenotypic characterization of commensal Klebsiella spp. from breast milk of healthy women and faeces from healthy breast-fed infants, which were compared with isolates from community-acquired infections and

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Two β-lactamase gene regions were characterized by DNA sequencing in eight clinical isolates of Klebsiella oxytoca. Thebla OXY-2a region encoded a β-lactamase nearly identical to OXY-2 (one amino acid residue substituted) and conferred aztreonam and cefuroxime resistance on the K. oxytoca isolates. Overproduction of OXY-2a was caused by a G-to-A substitution of the fifth nucleotide in the −10 consensus sequence ofbla OXY-2a. Thebla OXY-1a was identified in a susceptible strain, and the OXY-1a enzyme differed from OXY-1 by two amino acid residues.
