Background New records of alien land planarians are regularly reported worldwide, and some correspond to undescribed species of unknown geographic origin. The description of new species of land planarians (Geoplanidae) should classically be based on both external morphology and histology of anatomical structures, especially the copulatory organs, ideally with the addition of molecular data. Methods Here, we describe the morphology and reproductive anatomy of a species previously reported as Diversibipalium “black”, and the morphology of a species previously reported as Diversibipalium “blue”.

The hammerhead worms constitute a land planarian subfamily (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida: Bipaliinae) that is popular among natural historians as well as citizen scientists due to their characteristic semi-lunar-shaped head, the striking colours of many species, and the worldwide presence of introduced species, which has raised much concern about their putative impact on the receiving ecosystems. Despite such current awareness, the majority of Bipaliinae species was described before the second half of the 20th century. A genome skimming approach of sequencing was undertaken on a subfamily of terrestrial flatworms that had been neglected in genomic studies until now, namely the Microplaninae as represented here by Microplana scharffi. Land hammerhead planarians were first discovered on the not large Askold Island in the eastern part of Peter the Great Bay. Gray-brown uniformly colored worms 14–30 cm long, collected in a sparse forest from hard substrate. On the basis of external morphological features, planaria are assigned to the genus Novibipalium Kawakatsu, Ogren et Froehlich, 1998, of the subfamily Bipaliinae described from Japan. Area of the genus includes Hokkaido, Honshu, and south of Primorsky krai.

We present new records of the invasive hammerhead flatworms Bipalium kewense Moseley, 1878 and Bipalium vagum Jones & Sterrer, 2005 (Platyhelminthes, Geoplanidae, Bipaliinae) from several states in Mexico based on iNaturalist and two vouchered specimens. This represents for Mexico the first review of distribution records of this group and highlights the importance of citizen science in monitoring the distribution of these ecologically important invasive predators. Methods for the collection and preservation of hammerhead flatworms, as well as an identification key, are proposed.

An annotated list of the one terrestrial and three freshwater planarian species from the Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve is given. The family Geoplanidae, two genera, Polycelis Ehrenberg, 1831 and Diversibipalium Kawakatsu, Ogren, Froehlich et Sasaki, 2002, and three species, Phagocata sibirica (Zabusov, 1903), Polycelis schmidti (Zabusov, 1916) and Diversibipalium sp. are recorded from reserve for the first time. The finding of the terrestrial hammerhead planarians genus Diversibipalium in the Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve is most north record of the East-Asian subfamily Bipaliinae (Geoplanidae).
