This thesis describes the synthesis of some biphenyl-biphenyl analogues for the treatment of diabetes. Researchers at Curtin University of Technology have reported the discovery of small molecule insulin mimetics. One of the reported compounds (IM140) is active in an animal model of diabetes. The structure of IM140 comprises of a biphenyl left hand side, a linker and a xanthone right hand ring fragment (right hand side). Platinum(II) biphenyl diimine complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Single crystal X-ray structures from seven complexes show two types of configurations about the platinum coordination sphere in the solid state: X and B (butterfly). The two configurations give different circular dichroism spectra (CD) based on their C2 or Cs symmetry. The metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) bands which occur at ~440 nm are transitions from d orbitals on the platinum metal center to * orbitals of the diimine ligands. The conformational and substitution effects were studied by photophysical properties and cyclic voltammetry. For the fluorescence and phosphorescence of 2,2’-(1,3,4-oxadiazo-2-yl)biphenyl(BOBP) showed good spectra matching with absorption spectra of MLCT1 and MLCT3 transition of Ir(ppy)3.
