Nous avons développé une procédure simple et originale pour la synthèse de dérivés 4,4'-bipyridines polyhalogénées basée sur la lithiation de dihalogénopyridines. Le mécanisme de cette réaction a été étudié par l'isolement et la caractérisation de plusieurs produits secondaires. La méthodologie adoptée a été ensuite appliquée à la synthèse d'une série de bipyridines 4,4' comportant des atomes de chlore, de brome et aussi d'iode. A novel hetero Diels-Alder reaction has been developed to facilitate the synthesis of annelated pyridines as models for pyridoacridine alkaloids. The key reaction is based on an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of an aza-1,3-butadiene with an appropriate dienophile, to yield the desired annelated pyridine. An extension of this methodology is to exploit the Eglinton copper (IT) dimerisation of terminal acetylenes. An experimental approach was taken in determining the quantum yield of Ruthenium(II) with Oxygen using two different Ru complexes. This reaction results in Ruthenium(III) and O2-. The Coulombic interactions caused by a carboxylate functional was found to increase the yield of charge separation. This was done using a diode to measure the intensity of the completed reaction over a certain time frame. The intensities were turned into concentrations. The concentration over time was used to determine the quantum yield. This information is useful in creating more efficient light emitting diodes.

Structure property relationship in the redox-active core dendrimers were systematically studied by probing the rate and driving force for electron transfer. An isostructural series of redox-active, metal tris(bipyridine) core dendrimers were synthesized for this purpose. Various synthetic routes were attempted to introduce the bulky dendritic moieties to the bipyridine units with high yields. Heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics was studied by electrochemical methods.
