Abstract:
Litter humification is an essential process of soil carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems, but the relationship between soil fauna and humic substances has not been well understood. Therefore, a field litterbag experiment with manipulation of soil fauna was carried out in different soil frozen seasons over one year in cold forests. The foliar litter of four dominated tree species was selected as Birch (Betula albosinensis), Fir (Abies fargesii var. faxoniana), Willow (Salix paraplesia), and Cypress (Juniperus saltuaria). The decomposition dynamics of four types of needle litter and three types of leaf litter were followed for 4 years. Mass losses and certain chemical changes were studied. Most of the nutrient-rich litters appeared to decompose relatively quickly during the first 12–18 months. After 3–4 years, however, their accumulated mass losses were lower compared with litter types that intially had lower rates. Thus the more nutrient-rich litters had considerably lower mass-loss rates in the later stages. This pattern was even more pronouced for extract-free lignocellulose: its mass-loss rate was negativel

This study determined the rate of decomposition of fine roots and leaf litter from birch, larch, and pine, and compared the impact of fine root decomposition and leaf litter on carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus accumulation in various regenerated and reconstructed forest ecosystems. The control plots were located on podzol soils in managed forest non-degraded habitats. Over a one-year experimental season, the decomposition of birch and larch fine roots released less carbon in comparison to leaf litter. This thesis tested the hypothesis that females that developed in a male biased litter would be masculinised and therefore have impaired reproductive performance and be more aggressive than those born into female biased litters. One of the aims of this thesis was to investigate new tools for selection of gilts into the breeding herd. Current selection criteria are minimal, with genetics, weight, and body conformation as the main determinants. We investigated effects of the sex ratio of a gilt’s birth litter, as in other litter bearing species it affects reproduction, behaviour, and physiology.

Abstract:
Studies of visual field development between birth and age 7 months have been conducted using a variety of stimuli, including three-dimensional objects, flickering lights, and moving gratings, and a variety of procedures, including kinetic perimetry (KP), static perimetry (SP), and a combination of KP and SP, termed hybrid static-kinetic perimetry (HP) (see Maurer & Lewis, 1991; Mayer & Fulton, 1993, for reviews). In contrast, little information is available on the effects of stimulus parameters or procedural variations on measured visual field extent in children between I and 3 years o

The object of this paper is an historical-economic analysis of the European demographic dynamics in the XIX century, with particular reference to the Italian emigration to London and the birth of Little Italy. The analysis will focus on the first settlements and on the development of the first Italian community in London and highlights the different sort of skilled and unskilled workers within the economic and social environment, an aspect that arouses great interest in the scientific debate, due to the fear of a depletion of human capital in our country, with its negative consequences on the

Currently, much attention is paid to the protective treatment of wood materials. This allows you to protect wood from adverse factors and extend the service life of products based on it. At the same time, not a little, an important criterion is the ratio of the price of the protective composition and its quality. The article discusses the possibility of using an oligomer for the protective treatment of natural wood, obtained on the basis of by-products of the production of polybutadiene and modified with secondary polystyrene. INTRODUCTION Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) carries significant morbidity and mortality risk. Care of DR-TB in pregnancy is even more challenging. A recent meta-analysis examining the impact of DR-TB on pregnancy outcomes found a higher than expected rate of maternal death, pregnancy loss, and a significant prevalence of low-birthweight infants. Anti-tubercular drugs such as bedaquiline and clofazimine have long half-lives and the impact of in-utero exposure is largely unknown. There is little information to help women, their family members, and clinicians make informed decisions about DR

Pregnancy is a dynamic physiological process associated with significant hormonal, immune and metabolic changes to support the growth and development of the fetus. Several studies have highlighted the role of gut microbiota during pregnancy1. The composition of gut microbiota changes dramatically during the course of pregnancy with an increase in Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, a decline in butyrate-producing bacteria and a reduction in bacterial richness at the end of pregnancy2. These modifications were anticipated to favour the increased metabolic demand during pregnancy, which will, in

Introduction: Neurodegenerative diseases affect thousands of people in Brazil and have been increasing in frequency with the aging population. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms and biomarkers of these diseases, which leads to a medical approach based on symptomatic and unresolving characteristics. Epigenetics, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and changes in regulatory RNAs, emerges as a tool for prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Trends and differentials in the age at first birth are well-documented (FP-20-06). Given shifts and variation in completed family size (FP-20-04), it is also important to look at the age of last birth – that is, when do women stop having children – which has received very little attention. This profile investigates the median age at last birth among women at the end of their childbearing years, at 45-49 years old. Child-related leave can have important implications for parents and children. Increases in leave duration and benefits reduces the likelihood of parents developing depressive symptoms, have been found to improve maternal and child health, and links have been found between generous maternity leave benefits and reductions in child mortality. Child-related leave policy also has a role to play in the gender income gap, which often starts after the birth of a child. It can protect the employment relationship for mothers and assist them in returning to a job of the same level and pay. It can also al

Religious populism and radicalism are hardly new to Pakistan. Since its birth in 1947, the country has suffered through an ongoing identity crisis. Under turbulent political conditions, religion has served as a surrogate identity for Pakistan, masking the country’s evident plurality, and over the years has come to dominate politics. Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) is the latest face of religious extremism merged with populist politics. Nevertheless, its sporadic rise from a national movement defending Pakistan’s notorious blasphemy laws to a “pious” party is little understood. This paper draw
