Abstract:

Birgit Mersmann und Hauke Ohls führen in der Einleitung ins Diskursfeld des Okzidentalismus ein und stellen die thematischen Verknüpfungen zwischen den Einzelbeiträgen vor. Von Edward Saids Vorstellung einer kulturellen Konstruktion des Okzidents durch Imagination eines exotisierten Orients ausgehend, referieren sie den Forschungsstand zur kulturwissenschaftlichen wie geopolitische Debatte um den Okzidentalismus seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre und verdeutlichen anhand ausgewählter Positionen, dass der Theoriediskurs durch vielfältige, teils sogar gegensätzliche Okzidentalismuskonzepte geprägt ist. Als Ziel des Bandes fordern sie, die kulturelle Pluralität und Diversität von Okzidentalismen als Aneignungs-, Umwandlungs- und Verwerfungsformen interdisziplinär zu reflektieren und zudem einem kritischen Okzidentalismus als hegemonie- und ideologiekritischer Untersuchungsmethode neue Bedeutung beizumessen.
