Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore students and instructor perceptions of the concept of renewable assignments in the open educational resources (OER) movement. Mixed methods were used, with a combination of a survey and semi-structured interview, administered at George Mason University in the United States. Eleven graduate students enrolled in the Instructional Design and Technology program in the course Advanced Instructional Design were invited to complete an online survey. A face-to-face interview was conducted with the instructor of the course. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to examine the results of the study. The data analysis found that only a small number of students were knowledgeable about OER, but the majority of participants indicated that they were very satisfied with the concept of renewable assignments. The findings suggest further investigation of the pedagogical models that tend to support student-generated OER.

Mojisola Adebayo and Valerie Mason-John are two distinctive voices in contemporary writing and performance, representing an Afro-Queer diasporic heritage through the specific experience of being black, British, and lesbian. Creating continuities from contorted or erased histories (personal, social, and cultural), their drama demonstrates both Afro-centric and European theatrical influences, which in Mason-John's case is further consolidated in her polemic, poetry, and prose. Like Britain's most innovative and prominent contemporary black woman dramatist, debbie tucker green, they reach beyond local or national identity politics to represent universal themes and to centralize black women's experiences. With subject matter that includes royal families, the care system, racial cross-dressing, and global ecology, Adebayo and Mason-John have individually forged a unique aesthetic and perspective in work which links environmental degradation with social disenfranchisement and travels to the heart of whiteness along black-affirming imaginative routes. Deirdre Osborne is a lecturer in drama at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and has published essays on the work of black British dramatists and poets, including Kwame Kwei-Armah, Dona Daley, debbie tucker green, Lennie James, Lemn Sissay, SuAndi, and Roy Williams. She is the editor of Hidden Gems (London: Oberon Books, 2008), a collection of plays by black British dramatists.

In NTQ61, Deborah Saivetz described the attempts over the past decade of the Italian director Pino DiBuduo to create ‘invisible cities’ – performances intended to restore the relationship between urban spaces and their inhabitants, through exploring the actual and spiritual histories of both. Earlier in the present issue, Baz Kershaw suggests some broader analogies between the theatre and its macrocosmic environment. Here, Claire Cochrane, who teaches at University College, Worcester, narrows the focus to a particular British city and the role over time of a specific theatre in relation to its urban setting. Her subject is the history and development of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in relation to the city – of which its founder, Barry Jackson, was a lifelong resident – as an outcome of the city's growth in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, which made it distinctive in terms of its manufactures, the workers and entrepreneurs who produced them, and a civic consciousness that was disputed yet also shared. She traces, too, the transition between old and new theatre buildings and spaces which continued to reflect shifting class and cultural relationships as the city, its politicians, and its planners adapted to the second half of the twentieth century.

Bridget Burke has been appointed associate dean for special collections at the University of Oklahoma (OU) Libraries starting next month. Burke will be responsible for the leadership and strategic vision for OU Libraries’ seven distinct special collections. Burke recently visited OU Libraries’ Western History Collections as a member of a team of western American history materials experts to assess and recommend best practices for preservation, acquisition of new materials and enhancement of both the collections’ web presence and its centrality to the scholarly fields of western and Native American history and culture. Currently, Burke is the director of the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming. She formerly served as the dean of libraries at North Dakota State University, as well as having held positions at the Boston College University Libraries, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

In 2015, the American Heart Association awarded 4-year funding for a Strategically Focused Research Network focused on hypertension composed of 4 Centers: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and University of Iowa. Each center proposed 3 integrated (basic, clinical, and population science) projects around a single area of focus relevant to hypertension. Along with scientific progress, the American Heart Association put a significant emphasis on training of next-generation hypertension researchers by sponsoring 3 postdoctoral fellows per center over 4 years. With the center projects being spread across the continuum of basic, clinical, and population sciences, postdoctoral fellows were expected to garner experience in various types of research methodologies. The American Heart Association also provided a number of leadership development opportunities for fellows and investigators in these centers. In addition, collaboration was highly encouraged among the centers (both within and outside the network) with the American Heart Association providing multiple opportunities for meeting and expanding associations. The area of focus for the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Center was hypertension and target organ damage in children utilizing ambulatory blood pressure measurements. The Medical College of Wisconsin Center focused on epigenetic modifications and their role in pathogenesis of hypertension using human and animal studies. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Center’s areas of research were diurnal blood pressure patterns and clock genes. The University of Iowa Center evaluated copeptin as a possible early biomarker for preeclampsia and vascular endothelial function during pregnancy. In this review, challenges faced and successes achieved by the investigators of each of the centers are presented.

Taken together, these four volumes comprise the Conflict Series, and represent the fruits of work completed by John Burton, with others, in the last years of his formal academic career in the United States, at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, and at the Center for Conflict Resolution at George Mason University in Virginia. Burton has now ‘retired’ (though he still writes vigorously) to his native Australia, and that event, together with the appearance of these works, prompts this synoptic evaluation of them in the context of Burton's life and previous work. What makes this particularly interesting in the case of John Burton is that his career has been less than singular; first a civil servant, then a diplomat, then an academic, he moved from Australia, then to the United Kingdom and thence to the United States, with various stops along the way. Though he has written a great deal—books, articles and conference papers—and was a key participant in the organization of the peace research movement in the 1960s, especially the International Peace Research Association and the Conflict Research Society in the United Kingdom (and is described on the back cover of CRP as ‘the founder of the field of conflict resolution’), he was never a professor during his extended residence i n the United Kingdom at, first, University College, London, and then at the University of Kent, achieving that status only later, at George Mason University.

The Science Communication Competition is now in its sixth year. As in previous years, it aims to find young talented science writers and give them the opportunity to have their work published in The Biochemist. In 2015, a new branch of the competition was launched to include video entries. Overall this year's competition attracted 62 entries and these were reviewed by our external panel of expert judges. The first prize in the written category was awarded to Donald Iain MacDonald from University College London, whose article is presented here; the winner of the video category was Joe Tickle from the University of Birmingham. This very large training scheme was formed at the suggestion of the then newly appointed Professor of Psychiatry, Ian Brockington, who saw that in the existing rotations the balance between specialty and general posts was very uneven. He also argued convincingly that it would attract more trainees of high calibre and improve the morale and enthusiasm for training of the consultants, particularly in those rotations which had difficulty recruiting junior doctors or had failed to achieve more than provisional approval by the Royal College on repeated accreditation visits. The new scheme was launched in 1984 following the establishment of a Steering Committee including representatives of the psychiatric divisions of the five Birmingham Health Authorities and the adjacent Sandwell and Solihull Health Authorities, of the University Department and of the various specialties such as child psychiatry. All the Authorities agreed to pay jointly for a clerical officer to service the scheme and Solihull undertook to provide accommodation and a Medical Personnel Officer with specific responsibility for the scheme. A senior universally respected Clinical Tutor, Eddy Sethna, was elected Organising Tutor and given full authority to manage the rotation, reporting twice yearly to the Steering Committee which would advise on any difficulties which he could not resolve directly with trainees, trainers or divisions and would agree additions or modifications to the scheme.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop a participant-informed technology-based physical activity (PA) promotion tool for young overweight and obese African American (AA) women. A mixed-method 3-phase study protocol design was used to develop text messages to promote PA in AA women attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham during the Spring of 2013. Nominal focus groups and a 2-week pilot were used to generate and test participant-developed messages. Participants ( n = 14) had a mean age of 19.79 years ( SD = 1.4) and mean body mass index of 35.9 ( SD = 5.926). Focus group data identified key themes associated with the use of text messages to promote PA including message frequency, length, tone, and time of day. Participants preferred text messages that were brief, specific, and time sensitive. Results showed that text messaging was a feasible and acceptable strategy to promote PA in overweight and obese AA women in a university setting.

Abstract A two-year project on ‘A Comparative Analysis of Community-Focused Initiatives Aimed at Supporting Women, Children and Young People who have been the Focus of Violence, Exploitation or Trafficking in Three Regions of the United Kingdom, Germany and Romania’ which was funded by the Daphne programme, was carried out by Newman University College in Birmingham/England together with the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences, Berlin/Germany and Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu/Romania. Service users, in particular, and policy-makers and professional helpers were asked about their experiences with the care structures in their respective countries. The results show that even after many decades of providing professional support for women in violent relationships services are still frequently unable to help the victims to find a ‘safe place’ which could allow them to escape from the violence. The article collates the results of the Daphne project and recent international research on the subject of trauma and domestic violence, reflects on the causes of this gap in care provision and suggests how professional approaches to solving this dilemma could be improved.

Following the model of the University of Colorado at Boulder Learning Assistant (LA) program, the College of Science (COS) at Mason began its own LA program in 2012. The program is a key segment of the STEM Accelerator program, and is a keystone for retaining students in COS and enabling them to graduate in a timely manner. COS STEM Accelerator has now supported over 300 undergraduate LA’s since it's inception through both internal and external funding. The LA program is very successful in increasing grades, engaging students in large lecture classes, enabling faculty to better utilize the ALT classroom, increasing retention in sciences and also increasing confidence and GPA’s for the undergraduate LA’s. The cornerstones of the LA program are student mentoring by the faculty sponsor, a required seminar in pedagogical techniques, and face-to-face time with students in the classroom. This interactive presentation will include information about the program in COS. Faculty and students will demonstrate examples of how LA’s are integrated into different learning environments and across disciplines. Examples will include LA’s in the ALT classroom, in large and small lectures, in lab, in orals, and on-line. Disciplines include Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Geography, Geology, Math and Physics. Attendees will understand the program and it’s key concepts, discuss how an LA could work in their classroom and discipline, and understand how COS is working to enable your students to conquer their MATH and Mason Core Science classes.

Arthur Schnitzler's cycle of sexual permutations in fin de siècle Vienna has always been prone to problems of translation – not least of its title, properly in German Reigen, but often miscalled La Ronde, after Max Ophüls's film version of 1950. But its problems for translators also derive from the cultural specificity of its time and place, and in this article Heidi Zojer first examines how its numerous English translators have tried to overcome the difficulties the play presents, illustrating from a cross-section of versions examples of its resistance to easy translation, whether ‘faithful’ or colloquial. She concludes that freer adaptations such as David Hare's The Blue Room (1998) have in fact been truer to the spirit of Schnitzler's play – while perhaps truest of all has been Carlo Gébler's complete rewriting, in Ten Rounds (1999), which ‘translated’ the play to contemporary Belfast during the years of the peace process. Heidi Zojer was awarded her D. Phil. from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, in 1999. From 2000 to 2002 she was Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, and since then has been teaching at University College Dublin.

As concepts of nationhood and national identity become increasingly slippery, so the theatre historian attempting to recover neglected histories submerged within the dominant discourse of the nation state needs to be wary of imposing an ideologically pre-determined reading on the surviving evidence of performance practice and audience response. It is also important to acknowledge that theatre practice which represents the majority experience of national audiences does not necessarily conform to the subjective value judgements of the critic-historians who have tended to produce a limited, highly selective historical record. In attempting to re/write the history of twentieth-century British theatre Claire Cochrane has researched the hitherto neglected area of amateur theatre which was a widespread phenomenon across the component nations. Focusing in this article on the cultural importance of amateur theatre in Welsh communities before the Second World War, she explores the religious, socio-political, and topographical roots of its rapid expansion, and the complex national identities played out in the collaboration between actors and audience. Claire Cochrane lectures in drama and performance studies at University College Worcester. Her most recent book is Birmingham Rep: a City's Theatre, 1962–2002 (Sir Barry Jackson Trust, 2003). She is currently working on a history of twentieth-century British theatre practice for Cambridge University Press.

It intends to identify the key players in the field over the last forty years. In doing so, it will inevitably overlook the historians now working on the earlier presence of Muslims in Britain. However, the article hopes to demonstrate the increasing academic interest in the study of Muslims in Britain and some of the trends and transformations in academic interest. The article does not detail the networking activities of the important Muslims in Britain Research Network established by Jorgen Nielsen when he worked at Selly Oak College in Birmingham in the 1980s or the Centre for the Study of Islam in Britain based at Cardiff University. However, many of the contributors to the study of Muslims in Britain will have benefitted from the work of the Network and the Centre. In some ways the existence of both is an indicator of the growth of the subject area and the role of the study of religion.

This article describes and assesses the effectiveness of a 3-yr, laboratory-based summer science program to improve the academic performance of inner-city high school students. The program was designed to gradually introduce such students to increasingly more rigorous laboratory experiences in an attempt to interest them in and model what “real” science is like. The students are also exposed to scientific seminars and university tours as well as English and mathematics workshops designed to help them analyze their laboratory data and prepare for their closing ceremony presentations. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of student performance in these programs indicates that participants not only learn the vocabulary, facts, and concepts of science, but also develop a better appreciation of what it is like to be a “real” scientist. In addition, the college-bound 3-yr graduates of this program appear to be better prepared to successfully academically compete with graduates of other high schools; they also report learning useful job-related life skills. Finally, the critical conceptual components of this program are discussed so that science educators interested in using this model can modify it to fit the individual resources and strengths of their particular setting.

ABSTRACT IMPACT: Our work helps show universities that embedding dedicated sexual health clinics within university health and wellness clinics may expand the amount of students they see for sexual health screenings during a time of increased sexual behavior and exploration. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The National College Health Association reports that college students have frequent, condomless sex. Student health and wellness clinics (SHWC) offer sexual health services, but few have dedicated sexual health clinics (SHC). We evaluated sexual health service use at a university SHWC after implementation of a dedicated SHC two half-days per week. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: This was a retrospective analysis of data collected from patients receiving sexual health screening at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) SHWC between January 2015 and June 2019. Demographic variables, sexual behaviors, reason for testing, and rates of STIs were extracted from the electronic medical record and were compared by clinic (SHC vs. SHWC). Data on screening visits of patients over 18 were included in the final analysis. Variables were summarized with frequencies and percentages. Univariate models were fit, and multi-variable models will be fit, selecting variables with p values of 0.1 or less. Odds ratios with corresponding 95% confidence intervals for univariate analysis are presented. The study was approved by the UAB Institutional Review Board. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: A total of 5025 STI screenings were performed. Males (OR 4.13; 3.61-4.72), undergraduates (OR 1.33; 1.15-1.54), and persons reporting sex with the same sex (OR 1.88; 1.56-2.28), were significantly more likely to seek care at the SHC. Students with symptoms were more likely to seek care at the SHWC (OR 0.53; 0.47-0.61), while persons who reported contact with STIs were more likely to seek care at the SHC (OR 2.88; 2.22-3.74). The overall percentage of positive screenings was 9.3% for chlamydia (CT), 3.0% for gonorrhea (GC), 0.8% for trichomoniasis (TV), 0.7% for syphilis, and 0.3% for HIV with higher percentages of positive for CT (OR 1.60; 1.30-1.96) and GC (OR 2.02; 1.44-2.85) in the SHC. A greater percentage of positives for TV (OR 0.37; 0.14-0.96) was found in the SHWC. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF FINDINGS: Based on demographics of persons utilizing services, embedding a dedicated SHC within a university SHWC may expand populations reached for STI screening. With higher percentages of patients testing positive for CT and GC, a SHC may allow for greater diagnosis and treatment of STIs in general screening and persons presenting as contacts.

Chrissie Poulter read Drama and Theatre Arts at Birmingham University from 1973 to 1976, and was taught by Clive Barker during her first year there. Now a Lecturer at Trinity College Dublin, her specialism is theatre games, so their paths continued to cross over the years. As a theatre director, deviser, and trainer her work centres on the use of play within and without the theatre world, with a particular focus on inter- and intra-cultural exchange. Her book Playing the Game (Palgrave-Macmillan, 1987) is a widely used manual of theatre games. Her most recent creative projects have been as one of the directors of The Bus Project – a site-specific project on a moving Dublin bus – for Performance Lab in the Dublin Fringe Festival in September 2007, and Metamorphoses with Prey Trio, a site-specific production with three musicians for the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray, Co Wicklow, described in the preceding article by Lizbeth Goodman. Here, Chrissie Poulter takes theatre games as a springboard to discuss and define the need for ‘guardianship’ in game playing, online or in the studio workship.

As author of one of the pioneering books advocating the study of Shakespeare's Plays in Performance (1966), founder of the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts at Birmingham University, and for fifteen years an Associate Director of the Royal National Theatre, John Russell Brown is in a uniquely authoritative position to look back over the intervening years as ‘Performance Studies’ have increasingly displaced the study of Shakespeare's plays as texts. But has this been as helpful as many, including the author, hoped, when in practice it is so often based on the second- or third-hand recreation of lost and isolated theatrical moments, and fails entirely to give a sense of the progressive experience of watching a play? John Russell Brown here argues for closer attention to what he calls the ‘secret language’ of the plays – implicit instructions to actors that are buried in the texts themselves, at a time when there was no director to encourage or impose a particular interpretation or approach. Abstract When placing Hopkins in the divisive and impassioned religious and academic world of mid-Victorian Oxford, scholars have frequently drawn attention to those University tutors and senior churchmen who in different ways influenced his mental and religious development: Benjamin Jowett, Walter Pater, Henry Parry Liddon, and (more distantly, from Birmingham) John Henry Newman. In comparison, relatively little attention has been paid to Hopkins’s own undergraduate friends and contemporaries at Balliol College, or to the question of how other young men responded to the same set of religious circumstances and intellectual influences. In this study Henry Scott Holland (1847–1918) is selected to illustrate discernible Anglican parallels to particular aspects of Hopkins’s literary style and religious faith. Examining the ways Holland’s Anglicanism resembles, engages, contests, and shadows the early spirituality of Hopkins throws useful light on their overlapping academic and religious contexts. Particular attention is paid to examples of shared vocabulary, to themes from Holland’s published sermons and religious writings, which correlate to elements of Hopkins’s work, and especially to Holland’s vision of a kenotic “law of sacrifice” set in the life of the Holy Trinity. Key works such as Holland’s Logic and Life (1882) and the influential volume of Anglican essays Lux Mundi: A Series of Studies in the Religion of the Incarnation (1889) are utilized to inform a new perspective on Hopkins’s sermons and devotional writings.

In April 2010, the Guildhall School of Music recognized German composer Helmut Lachenmann's expertise in extended instrumental techniques, inviting him to give the keynote speech at a research day dedicated to contemporary performance practice; in May, he had a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music conferred upon him for his achievements as a composer; in June, the London Symphony Orchestra performed Lachenmann's Double (Grido II) for string orchestra, in doing so becoming the first non-BBC British orchestra to have performed his music; and in October, the Southbank Centre presented two days of Lachenmann's music including performances by the Arditti String Quartet and a much expanded London Sinfonietta, the latter broadcast on Radio 3. Outside London, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group gave a performance of his most recent work, Got Lost for soprano and piano, and the University of Manchester presented a mini-festival dedicated to his music. This roll call of events might be seen then as the celebration to be expected as a noted composer passes a milestone, but Lachenmann is a composer who – despite his age – could until recently have escaped such attention in Britain. In 1995, Elke Hockings wrote in these pages that, while enjoying ‘an exalted reputation among a small circle of English contemporary music enthusiasts, […] to the wider English music public he [Lachenmann] is little known’ and critical reception has been mixed, often extremely negative. Introducing Lachenmann to an audience at the Southbank Centre in October, Ivan Hewett described him as ‘a composer we don't know well in this country, an omission we are gradually repairing’.

IntroductionMany breast cancer survivors report an inability to fully participate in activities of daily living after completing cancer treatment. Reduced activity participation is linked to negative consequences for individuals (eg, depression, reduced quality of life) and society (reduced workforce participation). There is currently a lack of evidence-based interventions that directly foster cancer survivors’ optimal participation in life roles and activities. The overall objective is to assess the efficacy of BA/PS for enhancing breast cancer survivors’ activity participation and quality of life over time. A total of 300 breast cancer survivors reporting participation restrictions after completing curative treatment for stage 1–3 breast cancer within the past year will be recruited across two sites (Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and University of Alabama at Birmingham). Assessments are collected on enrolment (T1) and 8 (T2), 20 (T3) and 44 (T4) weeks later.Ethics and disseminationStudy procedures are approved by the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects at Dartmouth College, acting as the single Institutional Review Board of record for both study sites (STUDY 00031380). 221 Background: In recent years, new treatments for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) with excellent response rates and varying toxicity profiles have emerged. In the setting of multiple available options, shared decision-making is critical. Developing strategies to enhance shared decision-making requires better understanding of how patients and providers make treatment decisions. Methods: Patients with CLL and health care providers within the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System Cancer Community Network were to assess how treatment decisions are made. Results: Forty-four patients with CLL completed telephone-based surveys. The median age was 69 years old. Thirty percent had completed ≤12 years of education, 20% had some college education. Seventy-three percent of patients preferred an active or shared role in decision-making (27% preferring to make decision, 23% making decision with physician input, and 45% a shared role). Only 2% of patients preferred the doctor select the treatment. Despite >50% preferring an active role, only 20.5% perceived having an active role (Table 1). Thirty-three lay patient navigators, 26 oncologists, and 28 nurses (RN)/advanced care providers (ACP) completed web-based surveys. Navigators and nurses perceived a greater patient role in decision-making than physicians, who perceived that decisions were most often shared. Conclusions: Patients and providers have differing perceptions of their roles in decision-making in CLL treatment. Patients desire higher levels of participation in decision-making than they perceive that they receive, suggesting an opportunity for education of patients and providers to improve shared decision-making. This is the third in a series of biographies entitled ‘Children of the Golden Age,’ the purpose of which is to describe the background and contributions of significant living figures in polar research who began their scientific careers following World War II. Born on 17 January 1921 in Melbourne, Gordon de Quetteville Robin was educated at Wesley College and the University of Melbourne, graduating in physics with an MSc in 1942. Following submarine training in Scotland, he served in HMS Stygian in the Pacific. Soon after commencing as a research student in nuclear physics at Birmingham University, he joined the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and was the first base commander at Signy Station in the South Orkney Islands (1947–48). In 1949–52 he was third-in-command on the Norwegian–British–Swedish Antarctic Expedition responsible for the successful oversnow seismic ice thickness campaign. In 1958, following a brief sojourn in Canberra, he was appointed the first full-time director of the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge. During the next 24 years he developed SPRI into a world-class research institute. In the austral summer 1959–60 he undertook research operating from RRS John Biscoe in the Weddell Sea into the penetration of ocean waves into pack ice. During the early 1960s he stimulated development of radio echo sounding (RES) with Dr Stan Evans, which remains the standard technique for ice-thickness measurement. He undertook experimental fieldwork in Northwest Greenland in 1964 and airborne sounding in Canada in 1966. He was responsible for organising international collaborative programmes of airborne RES in Antarctica with American air support, leading fieldwork in 1967–68, 1969–70, and 1974–75. He was elected secretary of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research in 1958, serving for 12 years, and was president between 1970 and 1974. In 1975 he developed with Dr Terence Armstrong a postgraduate course in Polar Studies at SPRI. He retired as director in 1982 and continues his interests in glaciology as a senior research associate at SPRI.

201 Background: Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) reporting high levels of distress due to knowledge gaps and emotional concerns can have negative outcomes and suffer from lower quality of life. Understanding patients’ activation levels, causes of distress, knowledge gaps, and psychosocial needs are crucial in high quality care. Optimally activated, educated and empowered patients are better positioned to communicate effectively with providers regarding selection of, and adherence to, CLL treatment protocols and long-term care plans, and potentially improving quality of life. Methods: We recruited 44 adults with CLL from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System Cancer Community Network from April to July of 2015 as part of an educational and quality improvement initiative. Patient-reported distress assessments were collected to evaluate distress levels and causes of distress. The Patient Activation Measure (PAM 13) was used to evaluate patient activation (1-4 scale with 4 maximally activated). Results: The median participant age was 69 years old (range 50-89 years). Thirty percent had completed ≤ 12 years of education, 20% had some college education. Thirty-nine percent were on active treatment, 59% were in observation; 2% were uncertain of treatment. Fifty seven percent of participants were maximally activated (level 4); 11% had an activation level of 3; 20% had a level of 2; and 11% had the lowest level of activation (level 1). Twenty-five percent reported moderate distress (≥ 4) and 5% reported severe distress (≥ 8); 34% reported distress due to psychosocial concerns and 25% due to knowledge gaps. Conclusions: This project demonstrates a need to improve patient activation levels and minimize patient distress related to knowledge gaps and psychosocial concerns related to CLL. Well-designed, easily accessible educational interventions and multi-level quality improvement programs may be helpful in improving patient engagement by providing necessary knowledge to improve patient-provider communication and optimize patient outcomes.

Nathan Jacobson, who died on 5 December 1999, was an outstanding algebraist, whose work on almost all aspects of algebra was of fundamental importance, and whose writings will exercise a lasting influence. He had been an honorary member of the Society since 1972.Nathan Jacobson (later known as ‘Jake’ to his friends) was born in Warsaw (in what he describes as the ‘Jewish ghetto’) on 5 October 1910 (through an error some documents have the date 8 September); he was the second son of Charles Jacobson (as he would be known later) and his wife Pauline, née Rosenberg. His family emigrated to the USA during the First World War, first to Nashville, Tennessee, where his father owned a small grocery store, but they then settled in Birmingham, Alabama, where Nathan received most of his schooling. Later the family moved to Columbus, Mississippi, but the young Nathan entered the University of Alabama in 1926 and graduated in 1930. His initial aim was to follow an uncle and obtain a degree in law, but at the same time he took all the (not very numerous) mathematics courses, in which he did so well that he was offered a teaching assistantship in mathematics in his junior (3rd) year. This marked a turning point; he now decided to major in mathematics and pursue this study beyond College. During his final year at Alabama he applied for admission and financial aid to three top graduate schools in the country: Princeton, Harvard and Chicago. He was awarded a research assistantship at Princeton; after the first year he was appointed a part-time instructor for two years, and during his fourth year he was appointed a Procter Fellow. The stipend was enough to enable him to make a grand tour of Europe by car in 1935, in the company of two Princeton fellow-students at the time: H. F. Bohnenblust and Robert J. Walker.

The NIS is a 20% stratified sample of hospital discharges in the U.S. It is commonly used to derive national estimates of hospitalization and outcomes. Cocaine or hallucinogen use disorder hospitalization was defined in a validated approach as the presence of the following International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) diagnostic codes: cocaine use disorder, 304.2x, or 305.6x; and hallucinogen use disorder, 304.5x or 305.3x; hospitalizations for drug use in remission, drug counseling, rehabilitation or detoxification were excluded, as in previous studies. MSDs were identified based on the respective ICD-9 codes, a validated approach (5-9), in non-primary position: Gout: 274.xx; rheumatoid arthritis (RA): 714.xx; Fibromyalgia: 729.1; osteoarthritis (OA): 715.xx; or low back pain (LBP): 724.Results:In 1998-2000, the highest frequency of cocaine use hospitalizations was in people with LBP: LBP (n=5,914), followed by OA (n=4,931), gout (n=2,093), RA (n=2,026), and fibromyalgia (n=1,620). In 2013-2014, the order changed slightly with OA (n=22,185), followed by LBP (n=16,810), gout (n=10,570), RA (n=8,975), and fibromyalgia (n=5,680). Abstract:
Background After European Medicines Agency (EMA) approval of axicabtagene ciloleucel and tisagenlecleucel for the treatment of relapsed/refractory (r/r) high-grade lymphoma in 2018, England was one of the first European countries granting fully funded access to these CD19 CAR-T therapies. Both products are available through the National Health Service England (NHSE) Cancer Drug Fund until their cost-effectiveness has been determined. The NHSE CAR-T program has been set up in a structure aiming to implement robust and transparent criteria for patient selection and to ensure equity of treatment access: CAR-T slots are approved by a weekly National CAR-T Clinical Panel (NCCP), consisting of independent clinical experts, patient representatives, and delegates from each CAR-T centre; treatment is delivered in 7 geographically spread commissioned CAR-T centres (Birmingham, Bristol, King's College Hospital London, University Hospital London, The Christie Manchester, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Newcastle). Here, we report prospective data on the first 122 lymphoma patients approved by the NCCP. Methods Patients with r/r high-grade lymphoma referred to the NCCP between December 2018 and July 2019 and deemed eligible for treatment with CD19 CAR-T were analysed. Eligibility was assessed in the CAR-T centre's tumor board, based on organ function and fitness (performance status 0/1), absence of active CNS disease, and biopsy confirmation of r/r high-grade lymphoma. The final decision on patient eligibility was made by consensus through the NCCP independent clinical panel. CAR-T product selection for each patient was done by the CAR-T centre, mainly on the basis of manufacturing slot availability. Results 122 patients were approved for treatment with CD19 CAR-T therapy by the panel. CAR-T centres selected 76 patients for axicabtagene ciloleucel and 46 for tisagenlecleucel. Patients' median age was 56 years (range 18-75). 62% were male. 87 (71%) patients had de novo diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 29 (24%) transformed lymphoma (23 from follicular- and 6 from marginal zone lymphoma), and 6 (5%) primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma. 96 (79%) patients had biopsy confirmation of disease prior to submission. 71 (58%) patients had received 2 prior lines of therapy for high-grade lymphoma, 51 (42%) patients 3 or more treatment lines (maximum 6). 5 patients had previous allogeneic, 19 previous autologous transplant. 88% of patients (107/122) were refractory to the last line of treatment (stable- or progressive disease (PD) or relapse within 6 months). Among 122 patients, 112 completed leukapheresis, 3 are awaiting the procedure, and 7 patients did not proceed (6 due to PD, 1 opted for radical radiotherapy). 57 of 112 patients were infused at the time of abstract submission, 42 are awaiting CAR-T infusion. 10 patients did not proceed to infusion due to disease progression and clinical deterioration (3 with CNS relapse), 2 due to manufacturing failure. One patient achieved a complete response following bridging therapy and is currently monitored. 84% (88/105) patients received bridging therapy between the time of NCCP approval and CAR-T infusion (median 64 days), 62 had chemotherapy, 9 radiotherapy, and 17 steroids only. Details on bridging therapy, treatment-related toxicities and outcomes will be provided at the meeting, by which time approximately 62 patients will have completed their 3 months PET response assessment. Conclusion NHSE has successfully implemented a national structure for providing licenced CAR-T products in England, enabling equity of access and oversight on capacity and patient outcomes, which can serve as a model for newly licenced, cost-intense and complex cell- and gene therapies in the future. Abstract:
Peter Brian Medawar was born in 1915 in Rio de Janeiro. His father, Nicholas Agnatius, was a Brazilian businessman of Lebanese extraction, and his mother Edith Muriel Dowling, British. He was educated at Marlborough College and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he took a first-class degree in zoology in 1936 and D.Sc. in 1947. At Oxford he was successively a Christopher Welch Scholar and senior-demi of Magdalen, a senior research fellow of St John’s, and a fellow by special election of Magdalen. From 1947 to 1951 he was Mason Professor of Zoology in the University of Birmingham, from 1951 to 1962 Jodrell Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy in University College London, and from 1962 to 1971 Director of the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill. From 1971 to 1986 he worked in the Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Research Centre, Harrow. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1949; he was awarded a C.B.E. in 1958, a knighthood in 1965, a C.H. in 1972, and an O.M. in 1981, as well as honorary degrees too numerous to mention. In 1960, jointly with MacFarlane Burnet, he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine, for the discovery of immunological tolerance. Medawar enjoyed great fame as a popularizer and philosopher of science, through his books, numerous articles (cited here only as the collected volumes which contain a selection) and broadcasts. He had a powerfully dramatic presence, much wit, and deep insight into the hopes of his audience.
