Abstract:

ABSTRACTThis study provides an assessment of the temporal changes in ΔR, which is the local deviation from the global surface water marine reservoir effect (MRE), in the Point Barrow area of the Alaskan Arctic, a coastal archaeological area that has experienced severe erosion accelerated by global warming. A total of 26 samples were submitted for radiocarbon (14C) dating from eight secure Thule (AD 1000–1750) archaeological contexts, and specifically from archaeological features with paired processed seal and caribou bones that had been frozenin situ. This new approach towards ΔR estimation provides a best-fit local correction for the14C dating of human populations by focusing on the marine mammal (seals) predominantly consumed by the Thule (Coltrain et al. 2016). The weighted-mean ΔR value on these pairs is 450 ± 84 yr, which is about 50 years less than the weighted-mean (506 ± 69 yr) for the Point Barrow area calculated through14C measurements from four known-age bivalves collected in AD 1913 (McNeely et al. 2006). The effects of using this new ΔR value for calibration was assessed through the Bayesian chronological modeling of 5414C measurements from samples of human skeletons interred in the Nuvuk cemetery at Point Barrow, the largest ancient cemetery in northwest Alaska and traditionally thought to date to the Thule and earlier Birnirk (AD 500–1000) periods.

Abstract:

Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) were widespread in northern and interior Alaska in the late Pleistocene but were never a dominant component of large mammal faunas. After the end of the Pleistocene they were even less common. Most skeletal finds have come from the Arctic Coastal Plain and the foothills of the Brooks Range. Archaeological evidence, mainly from the Point Barrow area, suggests that humans sporadically hunted small numbers of muskoxen over about 1500 years from early Birnirk culture to nineteenth century Thule culture. Skeletal remains found near Kivalina represent the most southerly Holocene record for muskoxen in Alaska. Claims that muskoxen survived into the early nineteenth century farther south in the Selawik - Buckland River region are not substantiated. Remains of muskox found by Beechey's party in Eschscholtz Bay in 1826 were almost certainly of Pleistocene age, not recent. Neither the introduction of firearms nor overwintering whalers played a significant role in the extinction of Alaska's muskoxen. Inuit hunters apparently killed the last muskoxen in northwestern Alaska in the late 1850s. Several accounts suggest that remnant herds survived in the eastern Brooks Range into the 1890s. However, there is no physical evidence or independent confirmation of these reports. Oral traditions regarding muskoxen survived among the Nunamiut and the Chandalar Kutchin. With human help, muskoxen have successfully recolonized their former range from the Seward Peninsula north, across the Arctic Slope and east into the northern Yukon Territory.

Abstract:

This paper analyzes English inversion as an 'alloform' (Birner 2013) of both preposing and postposing. Birner 1996b analyzes inversion as subject to a negative constraint, disallowing new before old information. The need for this constraint vanishes, however, if inversion is viewed as being an alloform of preposing in cases where the preposed information is discourse-old, and an alloform of postposing in cases where the postposed information is discourse-new. Cases that satisfy both constraints are ambiguous between preposing and postposing, the infelicity of cases that satisfy neither constraint falls out automatically, and additional properties of inversion are readily explained.

Abstract:

Line balancing adalah suatu usaha mengatur lintasan produksi dengan tujuan merencanakan keseimbangan lintasan stasiun kerja (work station) pada tingkat shop floor, guna memperoleh tingkat efisiensi kerja yang tinggi. Proses pembuatan T-Shirt di PT. Caladi Lima Sembilan (C-59) memiliki proses operasi yang tidak seimbang, sehingga terjadi penumpukan barang setengah jadi pada suatu stasiun kerja dan adanya waktu menganggur (idle time) pada suatu proses operasi karena adanya antrian barang setengah jadi pada suatu mesin (bottle neck). Metode Line Balancing yang digunakan adalah metode Hegelson-Birnie yang didasarkan pada prioritas bobot posisi setiap operasi/elemen kerja dan metode Killbridge-Wester yang didasarkan pada pembagian wilayah. Kedua metode-metode yang digunakan sama-sama memberikan hasil yang optimal dalam mengatasi persoalan line balancing. Pada Metode Hegelson-Birnie dengan waktu siklus 30 detik diperoleh rata-rata efisiensi sebesar 93,33% dengan idle time 16 detik dan balance delay sebesar 6,67%, selain itu adanya pengurangan jumlah stasiun kerja dari 16 stasiun kerja menjadi 8 stasiun kerja. Sedangkan pada Metode Killbridge-Wester dengan waktu siklus 40 detik diperoleh rata-rata efisiensi sebesar 80,00% dengan idle time 56 detik dan balance delay sebesar 20%, selain itu adanya pengurangan jumlah stasiun kerja dari 16 stasiun kerja menjadi 7 stasiun kerja. Dari perbandingan kedua metode tersebut yang merupakan solusi terbaik di dalam penerapan metoda line balancing pada pembuatan T-Shirt di PT. Caladi Lima Sembilan (C-59) adalah metode Hegelson-Birnie.

Abstract:

Abstract Background: It is a very sad experience, as a clinician, to see a patient presenting very late at a dental office with complicated oral health-related problems when the initial causal problem is very cheap, easy, and simple to treat. This study aims to determine the factors causing delay in seeking dental treatment among the patients visiting the dental clinic of the Fedearal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, Nigeria. Methodology: This study was questionnaire-based survey of 172 non-paediatric patients attending the dental clinic of the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria. Data was obtained on their socio-demographic characteristics and the reasons behind their late presentation. Data analysis was done using the SPSS Version 20 Software. Results: Most of the participating patients were males (57.6%), Muslims (73.8%) and of age 16 – 35 years (65.1%). Also, 66.9% of them were from the Hausa tribe, 62.8% were married, and 40.1% had polytechnic/university education. The reasons indicated by the respondents for their delay in seeking early oral healthcare services at our dental clinic were diverse. However, the three most commonly given reason were: busy work schedules, dental anxiety, and preference for traditional treatment options. Conclusion: This study provides evidence of delayed presentation among patients visiting the dental clinic of the Federal Medical Centre situated in the Birnin Kebbi metropolis. This study also identified the reasons for such delays. This study also corroborates other studies in ascertaining that delayed dental visit is a public health and clinical problem in the Nigerian setting. Hence, there is an imminent need to ensure that the public are educated on oral health issues.

Abstract:

Background: Toxoplasmosis is a protozoan infection caused by infection with the obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). Several studies have been reported of high seroprevalence of this parasite from various hospitals in Nigeria. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis among the pregnant women receiving antenatal care in Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi. Methodology: This was a cross sectional study conducted at SYMH Birnin kebbi in 2015 using indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Results: The overall seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma antibodies was 33.3%. 9.7% seropositivity was found at first trimester, 60.5% from second trimester and 29.8% from third trimester. Using a chi square logistic regression analysis, lack of education, lower age at pregnancy, and frequency of close contacts with cats were significantly associated with the prevalence of IgG antibodies. Conclusion: Most primary infections during pregnancy are asymptomatic, congenital toxoplasmosis can have serious effects on the developing fetus. Screening for primary infection is problematic, primary prevention is the most logical method to lower the risk of congenital infection. There is also a need to educate women on the safe handling of cat litter during pregnancy.

We report a case of 21 Yrs old female patient referred to the radiology department at Shree Birndra Hospital, to investigate primary infertility. She underwent hysterosalpingogram, both transabdominal & transvaginal ultrasound and MRI of the pelvis. The final diagnosis was Uterus Didelphys, which is a type of lateral fusion disorder of mullerian ducts. AbstractThis paper presents direct numerical simulation (DNS) result of the Navier–Stokes equations for turbulent channel flows with blowing and suction effects. The friction Reynolds number is ${\rm{R}}{{\rm{e}}_\tau} = 394$ and a range of blowing and suction conditions is covered with different perturbation strengths, i. e. $A = 0.05, $ 0.1, 0.2. While the mean velocity profile has been severely altered, the probability density function (PDF) for (spanwise) vorticity – depending on wall distance $({y^ +})$ and blowing/suction strength (A) – satisfies the generalized hyperbolic distribution (GHD) of Birnir [The Kolmogorov-Obukhov statistical theory of turbulence, J. Nonlinear Sci. (2013a), doi: 10.1007/s00332-012-9164–z; The Kolmogorov-Obukhov theory of turbulence, Springer, New York, 2013b] in the bulk of the flow. The latter leads to accurate descriptions of all PDFs (at ${y^ +} = 40, $ 200, 390 and $A = 0.05, $ 0.2, for instance) with only four parameters. The result indicates that GHD is a general tool to quantify PDF for turbulent flows under various wall surface conditions.

This paper is an empirical study that attempted to x-ray the digitisation projects in tertiary institution libraries in North-West Nigeria. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi (WUFP) and Federal College of Education (Technical) Gusau (FCE (T)) were used as a case study. Purposive sampling technique was used to draw jive (5) sample staff from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto because it has the highest number of staff for the exercise and three (3) staff each from Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi and Federal College of Education (Technical), Gusau. Therefore, a total of eleven (11) staff were chosen as the sample for the study. The respondents composed of professional librarians and Management Information System (MIS) staff of the institutions under study. Eleven (11) structured questionnaires were distributed and all were returned and found useful for the study. The data collected were analyzed and discussed using a frequency table. The findings revealed that digitisation takes place in the libraries under study as the respondents agreed that these libraries are digitising information resources. Problems of inadequate ICT infrastructure, poor digitisation skills by library staff, poor digitisation equipment and inadequate digitisation management skills by the digitisation management stakeholders were discovered as a bane to successful digitisation projects in the institutions under study. The way forward; such as adequate staff training, funding, procurement of the state-of-the-art digitisation equipment etc were recommended.

Abstract:

Aims: This study was undertaken to review the caesarean section rate and perinatal mortality in Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2012.Methods: This was a retrospective study involving review of 580 case files. Ethical clearance was obtained. The records of labour ward, neonatal intensive care unit and operating theatre were use. Information extracted includes age, parity, booking status, total deliveries, indications for caesarean section and perinatal outcome from 1st January 2010 to 31st December 2012 at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS version 16.0 statistical software (Chicago). Absolute numbers and simple percentages were used to describe categorical variables.Results: A total of 590 caesarean sections were done which is rate of 17.69%. Of the 590 caesarean deliveries, 580 case notes were retrieved giving a retrieval rate of 98.3%. A total of 96 out of 580 babies died within the first one week of caesarean delivery, giving a perinatal mortality rate of 17.4 per 1000. The average age of the women was 25.9±6.2 years. Majority of them were uneducated and unemployed. Obstructed labour was the most common indication for emergency caesarean section accounting for 31.7% of caesarean sections followed by pre-eclampsia/eclampsia.Conclusions: Caesarean section rate in the present study is comparatively high and perinatal mortality is low but it is unclear if there is a correlation between caesarean section rate and perinatal mortality. This needs further studies.

Abstract The term postposing denotes any construction in which a phrasal constituent appears to the right of its canonical position, leaving its initial position either empty or occupied by an expletive. Ward and Birner (2004) argue that postposed constructions preserve the old-before-new information structure paradigm in English. The present paper investigates postposed constituents in Persian to find out the information structure paradigm of such constructions. The data have been taken from 34 interviews. The findings show that various constituents might undergo postposing in spoken Farsi (known as Tehrani dialect), and, in contrast to English, NPs were found to be triggered in postposed position when the referent was hearer-old.

We applied an interacting particle model to the Icelandic capelin stock to reproduce the spawning migration route for three different years, successfully predicting the route for 2008. Using available temperature data and approximated currents, and without using artificial forcing terms or a homing instinct, our model was able to reproduce the observed migration routes from all 3 years. By a sensitivity analysis, we identified oceanic temperature and the balance between the influence of interaction among particles and the particles' response to temperature as the control parameters most significant in determining the migration route. One significant contribution of this paper is the inclusion of orders of magnitude more particles than similar models, which affects the global behaviour of the model by propagating information about surrounding temperature through the school more efficiently. To maintain the same dynamics between different simulations, we argue a linear relationship between the time-step, radii of interactions, and the spatial resolution, and we argue that these scale as N−1/2, where N is the number of particles.

Background: Eye care workers comprise of both clinical and non-clinical staff. For effective prevention of blindness and visual impairment the eye care health professionals must work in harmony. Also, the consumer of the eye care servicers must have good knowledge of these categories of workers to prevent financial loss, ocular morbidity from quackery and late hospital presentation. The main aim of this study is to assess the knowledge of students of school of optical dispensing technology, Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria about eye care workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in August 2017, among students of School of Optical Dispensing Technology, Birnin Kebbi. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to elicit information which include socio-demographic characteristics, the knowledge of students about eye care team, the composition of eye care team, and the functions of eye care team members. Data entry and analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Results: 71 students participated, of which 44(62%) were males. The mean age of the participants was 23.6 ± 4.8years, with age range between 18-48years. Majority 32 (45.1%) were in the age group of 23 - 27years. Most 28 (39.4) of the participants were in year 2. More than two-third (97.2%) of the students agreed that eye care was a team work. About 98.2% of the respondents were aware that different cadres of eye care workers exist. Sources of information about eye care team among the study participants was mainly during workshop or hospital seminar 31 (43.7%) organised by the department of ophthalmology Conclusions: The awareness and knowledge about different cadres of eye care workers was high among the students. The participants agreed that eye care is a team work. The sources of informations about eye care team was hospital seminal/workshop organised by the department of ophthalmology.

Aside from human factors, tire blowouts and other tire imperfections are major contributors to the persistently high road accident rate. While tire imperfections are categorized as part of the mechanical factors affecting road accident, the tire maintenance personnel and the vehicle owners' human behavior plays a significant role in ensuring that accidents due to tire imperfections are minimized. Therefore, this study aims to determine the accuracy of the pressure gauges used by tire maintenance personnel, popularly called vulcanizers in Nigeria, and to determine the level of awareness of vehicle owners about the basic information that affects the safe use of tires on the road. The study consists of two stages. The first stage investigates the accuracy of the pressure gauges used by twenty vulcanizers in four different districts in Birnin Kebbi, the northwestern part of Nigeria. The second stage was an online survey regarding the tire maintenance behavior of 87 participants, who were formally educated from Diploma to Ph.D. level. The study's findings showed that about 25% of the vulcanizers do not use pressure gauges to measure air pressure during tire inflation, and less than 17% of the readings taken were accurate. Yet about 60% of the respondents believe that vulcanizers' pressure gauges are reliable and less than 30% of the respondents know that the expiring date of tires is four years in Nigeria. Therefore, there is an urgent need for proper awareness about tire usage and maintenance among the general population. It would also be appropriate to include such basic road safety information in the school curriculum at all levels.

Abstract Background: Tobacco smoking is an addictive behavior with heavy risks accompanying its prolonged practice. Unfortunately, more and more people are indulging in tobacco smoking habits despite the public health education programs going on worldwide about the dangers associated with tobacco smoking behavior. This study aims to survey active shisha smokers in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State, Nigeria, on the awareness of the harmful effects associated with shisha smoking. Methods: This study was a survey of 45 active shisha smokers in Birnin Kebbi LGA. Snowballing technique was adopted in participants’ recruitment. Study instrument was a questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Results: Majority (32/45) of the participants were males, 16 had secondary school education, and 19 were within age range of 15 to 24 years. The majority (25/45) of them began to smoke shisha at the age of 18 years or more; also, 20 participants smoked shisha in all the 30 days prior to their participation in this study. Less than half of the study participants knew that: shisha is a stimulant (6/45), shisha smoke contains carbon monoxide (10/45), and the liquid in shisha could be replaced with alcohol (15/45). However, more than half of the participants knew that shisha contains nicotine (23/45) and tobacco (25/45). Only 16, 13, 11, 9, 5, 10, and 13 participants knew that shisha smoking could lead to cancer, cardiovascular diseases, increase in the risk of infections, reduced baby weight in pregnancy, gum and mouth disease, eye disease and blindness, and harm to non-smokers, respectively. Conclusion: Many of the active shisha smokers surveyed in this study began smoking shisha at a young age. Also, a significant proportion of them were unaware of the health hazards associated with shisha use; hence the need to educate them and even the Nigerian public on the dangers associated with shisha use.

Abstract:

Background: Fish is known to be one of the cheapest sources of animal protein and have essential nutrients needed in human diets. The present study investigated the proximate and nutrient composition of three species of fish, Champsocephalus gunnari, Oreochromis niloticus, and hybrid catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Methods: The sample collection, proximate and mineral analysis were conducted using the standard protocols of sample collections and chemical analysis. Results: The results revealed that Champsocephalus gunnari, Oreochromis niloticus, and Clarias gariepinus contain moisture (66.00±0.50%, 52.00±1.00%, and 70.00±0.20%), crude protein (9.20±0.1323%, 3.75±0.02%and 5.80±0.05%), crude lipid (10.16±0.91%, 2.37±0.01% and 12.00±0.30%), ash (11.92 ±0.02%, 39.40±0.03% and 11.97±0.06%), and crude fiber (2.03±0.01%, 2.36±0.02% and 0.19±0.01%) respectively. The mineral contents were: iron (4.50±0.01mg/kg, 3.70±0.01 mg/kg and 4.70±0.02mg/kg), Zinc (2.35±0.01mg/kg, 2.15±0.0100mg/kg and (1.89±0.01mg/kg) for Champsocephalus gunnari, Oreochromis niloticus, and Clarias gariepinus respectively, while copper was only detected in C. gunnari (0.25±0.01mg/kg). The same amount of chromium (0.01±0.00 mg/kg) was detected in all the samples. Manganese was undetected in all the samples. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study demonstrated the nutritional value of Champsocephalus gunnari, Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus. This information would help in choosing any of the fish bases on their nutritional values rather than taste and other physical features.
