Full textThe survival of a species depends on the correct transmission of an intact genome from one generation to the next. The cell cycle regulates this process and its correct execution is vital for survival of a species. The cell cycle underlies a strict control mechanism ensuring accurate cell cycle progression, as aberrations in cell cycle progression are often linked to serious defects and diseases such as cancer. Understanding this regulatory machinery of the cell cycle offers insights into how life functions on a molecular level and also provides for a better understanding of diseases and possible approaches to control them. Cell cycle control is furthermore a complex mechanism and studying it holistically provides for understanding its collective properties. Computational approaches facilitate holistic cell cycle control studies. However, the properties of the cell cycle control network challenge large-scale in silico studies with respect to scalability, model execution and parameter estimation. This thesis presents a mechanistically detailed and executable large-scale reconstruction of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell cycle control network based on reaction- contingency language. The reconstruction accounts for 229 proteins and consists of three individual cycles corresponding to the macroscopic events of DNA replication, spindle pole body duplication, and bud emergence and growth. The reconstruction translated into a bipartite Boolean model has, using an initial state determined with a priori knowledge, a cyclic attractor which reproduces the cyclic behavior of a wildtype yeast cell. The bipartite Boolean model has 2506 nodes and correctly responds to four cell cycle arrest chemicals. Furthermore, the bipartite Boolean model was used in a mutational study where 37 mutants were tested and 32 mutants found to reproduce known phenotypes. The reconstruction of the cell cycle control network of S. cerevisiae demonstrates the power of the reaction-contingency based approach, and paves the way for network extension with regard to the cell cycle machinery itself, and several signal transduction pathways interfering with the cell cycle.

Full textThe present study investigates the knowledge and attitudes of family planning programs by Iranian males, who play a major role in all familial decision-making, including the practice of family planning. This research examines subjects' reasoning strategies about practicing family planning. A sample of sixty laborers with various levels of formal education were selected and some methods developed within the domain of cognitive psychology were used in analyzing the data.
The results showed that males, as proposed, play a vital role in decision-making regarding the practice of family planning. Formal education appears to have no significant impact on the subjects' knowledge and attitudes toward issues of family planning. Furthermore, early age of marriage, particularly with respect to the girls, appears to be an accepted phenomenon and has strong roots in the belief systems of the population.
This research has implications for developing educational programs in the domain of health. It is proposed that future research should devote considerable effort to better understand the role of the males in the process of decision-making regarding the practice of family planning.

Full textWomen who are interested in controlling the timing of their pregnancies have many birth control and family planning options. The majority of women use exogenous forms of contraception, including oral contraceptive pills, hormone shots or patches, intra-uterine devices, or barriers such as condoms, sponges or diaphragms. Many of the exogenous methods have negative side effects including allergic reactions and increased risk of blood clotting, and cancer. Additionally, there can be religious objections to these methods. In an attempt to provide women other, natural, birth control options, an array of methods have been developed over time using knowledge of a woman's menstrual cycle. These methods are referred to as fertility awareness based methods because they track various symptoms of a woman's menstrual cycle to determine when she is fertile. Changes in the cervix, cervical mucus secretions, and basal body temperature indicate the fertile window when a woman is most likely to get pregnant. To avoid pregnancy, women using fertility awareness based methods abstain from unprotected intercourse during their fertile windows. Using cycle length and observed physical changes, six methods have been developed. The goal of this thesis is to review and compare the methods. Of the developed methods, the Standard Days method is a calendar method with an average method effective rate of 95% and an average typical-use effective rate of 88%. The Billings Ovulation method, a cervical mucus only method, has an average method effective rate of 98.5% and an average typical-use effective rate of 82%. The Creighton Model of Fertility Care System, also a cervical mucus only method, has an average method effective rate of 99% and an average typical-use effective rate of 87%. A simpler, cervical mucus only method is the TwoDay method which has an average method effective rate of 96% and a typical-use effective rate of 91%, higher than the other cervical mucus methods, likely due to its ease of use. The symptothermal method uses a combination of symptoms to create a double-check system for entering and exiting the fertile window. The method effective rate is the highest at 99.5% and the average typical-use effective rate is 95%. This method is the most effective, but also the most difficult to learn. Finally, the Marquette Model uses cervical mucus and an electronic fertility monitor to indicate the fertile window. The average method effective rate is 97.8% and the average typical-use effective rate is 83%. [TRUNCATED]

Full textSpousal communication on issues related to family planning and reproductive health is important in influencing fertility limiting behaviour. In South Africa, studies analyzing the relationship between spousal communication and family planning behaviour are virtually nonexistant. Understanding this relationship is critical for less developed countries where fertility remains at substantially high levels. In most countries, the isolation of men's participation in family planning issues is acknowledged as one of the major causes of poor performance of most family planning programs. In addition, lack of spousal communication about family planning is identified as one of the reasons for low levels of contraceptive use among women. The main objective of this study was to assess spousal communication on contraceptive use and family planning behaviour in three distinct areas in the Richtersveld (Northern Cape) area.
