Jain, Nikhil. "Eigenanalysis solution for quasi birth and death process." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41897.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> The behavior of many systems of practical interest in communications and other areas is well modeled by a single server exponential queueing system in which the arrival and service rates are dependent upon the state of a Markov chain, the dynamics of which are independent of the queue length. Formal solution to such models based on Neuts's matrix geometric approach have appeared frequently in the literature. A major problem in using the matrix geometric approach is the computation of the rate matrix, which requires the solution of a matrix polynomial. In particular, computational times appear to be unpredictable and excessive for many problems of practical interest. Alternative techniques which employ eigenanalysis have been developed. These techniques are polynomially bounded and yield results very quickly compared to iterative routines. On the other hand, the class of systems to which the eigenanalysis based techniques apply have been somewhat restricted. In this thesis, we modify the eigenanalysis approach initially presented in order to remove some of these restrictions.<br>Master of Science

Abstract:
We study the life of an axisymmetric monolayer of particles called a granular raft floating at an oil-water interface, from its formation to its sinking. We first look at the capillary interaction between a pair of beads, and generalize the result to a pair of granular rafts. The force strongly depends on the number of particles in each raft, a result that we understand by looking at the interfacial deformation each individual raft creates. Then, we explore the interaction between numerous granular rafts of different sizes randomly distributed. The aggregation is faster when the particles are initially more concentrated at the interface. The individual motion of each bead cannot be solved, but the overall clustering can be described statistically. The cluster-size distribution appears to answer to a self-similar evolution that we characterize. After that, we focus on the structural changes a granular raft can experience during its motion, and more precisely to its erosion. The cohesion of an entire raft is far higher than expected by the usual capillary theory. The same high cohesion is found between two beads in contact. A precise description of the position of the contact line accounts for the unexpectedly high resistance to erosion. Finally, we explore the dynamics of sinking of a granular raft, which happens when the vertical deflection of the interface exceeds a critical deformation. The oil thread formed during the sinking thins following an unusual path between the two classical self-similar regimes, delaying the onset of the final regime. This result emphasizes the decisive role boundary conditions can play in the transition between self-similarities

Abstract:
We say that (weak/strong) time duality holds for continuous time quasi-birth-and-death-processes if, starting from a fixed level, the first hitting time of the next upper level and the first hitting time of the next lower level have the same distribution. We present here a criterion for time duality in the case where transitions from one level to another have to pass through a given single state, the so-called bottleneck property. We also prove that a weaker form of reversibility called balanced under permutation is sufficient for the time duality to hold. We then discuss the general case.

Abstract:
In this article we use spatial birth-death processes to estimate the number of states k of a switching model. Following Preston (1976) and Stephens (1998) matching the detailed balance condition for the underlying birth-death process results in an unique invariant probability measure with the corresponding stationary distribution of the number of states. This concept could be easily integrated to Bayesian sampling to derive the marginal posterior distribution of the number of states within the sampling procedure. We apply this technique to simulated AR(1)data and to quarterly Austrian data on unemployment and real gross domestic product. Full text
Abstract:
The potential use of functional dopamine neurons derived from stem cells in the study and treatment of Parkinson’s disease has focused attention on the developmental origin of these cells. To optimize methods for the <i>in vitro</i> differentiation of dopamine neurons, a more precise understanding of their embryonic development is necessary. Previous studies suggested that dopamine neuron fate is induced by the floor plate and the morphogen. Shh. I have found that, in fact, dopamine neurons are derived from the Shh-expressing cells of the midbrain floor plate, itself. The forkhead transcription factor, Foxa2, is expressed in the floor plate and critical for the development of dopamine neurons. I observed that Foxa2 continues to be expressed in dopamine neurons in the adult substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area, where it regulates the survival of dopamine neurons. Mice carrying only one copy of the <i>foxa2</i> gene showed a spectrum of motor deficits reminiscent of Parkinson’s disease, including bradykinesia, tremors, and rigidity. Also similar to Parkinson’s disease, these movement abnormalities were accompanied by a progressive loss of midbrain dopamine neurons. The <i>foxa2 </i>heterozygous mouse is the first mouse model of age-dependent dopamine neuron degeneration. This new genetic model offers an opportunity to study the mechanism underlying dopamine neuron degeneration as well as the associated behavioural changes. This work suggests that forkhead proteins play a central role in the biology of Parkinson’s disease and that targeting the <i>foxa2</i> gene may be a new approach in stem cell-based and pharmacological therapies for Parkinson’s disease.

Abstract:
This thesis is centered on the theory of stochastic processes and their applications in biological systems characterized by a complex environment. Three case studies have been modeled by the use of the three fundamental tools of stochastic processes: the master equation (ME), the stochastic differential equation (SDE) and the partial differential equation (PDE). The principal approach here applied to deal with complexity is the characterization of the system by means of probability distributions describing each a parameter of the model or the introduction of fractional order derivatives to include non-local and memory effects maintaining the linearity in the equations. In Chapter 1 we briefly review the theory of stochastic processes. In Chapter 2 we derive a birth-death process master equation to test if Long Interspersed Elements (LINEs) can be modeled according to the neutral theory of biodiversity. In Chapter 3 we derive a model of anomalous diffusion based on a Langevin approach in which anomalous behavior arise in the asymptotic intermediate state as a consequence of the heterogeneity of the system, from the superposition of Ornstein-Uhlenback processes. In Chapter 4 we propose an extension of the cable equation, used to describe anomalous diffusion phenomena as the signal conduction in spiny dendrites, by introducing a Caputo time fractional derivative.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to chart the creation, development and eventual demise of the child analytic training of The Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP), the foremost Jungian Society in the UK. The brainchild of the Society's founding director, Michael Fordham, the creation of the child training drew on the talents and persistence of many committed individuals. Through oral history interviews and archival research I weave together a narrative that will serve as testament to this achievement and offer first hand recollections for posterity. Through these sources the narrative also explores the difficulties that the training faced and which ultimately led to its eventual demise. Additionally I interrogate the current status of this tradition of child analysis and ask the question whether or not the tradition continues to exist and if so in what ways; I conclude that currently the tradition can only be said to exist in an attenuated form and that the future is bleak. In the course of the thesis I locate the SAP training within the development more generally of child analytic provision within the UK, the relationship of that to the child guidance movement and to the psychoanalytic diaspora, which made it possible. I describe the current obstacles faced by the child p sychotherapy discipline as well as psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the NHS.

Full text
Abstract:
Three single-authored papers in this thesis will explore the role of knowledge and information in industrial clusters; and specifically, how knowledge plays a role inthe emergence and persistence of clusters. This thesis places a major emphasis on spinoff firms. The first paper uses a computational model to describe how patterns of industrial clustering arise with respect to the size of an initial firm when measured in terms of innovation. Technology is qualitatively described using a code set mapped on a cognitive space. Assuming inheritability of networking skills, I seek to model how the size of an initial firm influences future patterns of cluster formation through a model of technical cognition and a mimicking of creativity. Replicating the stylized facts of entrepreneurial cluster formation, we find initial firm size has a lasting impact on clustering patterns through its influence on the level of cognitive distance of the underlying agents. The second paper turns to networks as a tool of analysis to explore the relationship between a spinoff’s network and its geographical location within an industrial cluster. Although recent literature infers that the transmission of organizational attributes in industrial clusters is accomplished via passive network ties, this has not been directly measured. After controlling for firm size, parent size and age, we find that there a statistically significant and negative relationship between network efficiency and geographic distance to a cluster’s core. The third and final paper extends the use of networks to examine how knowledge flows, as conduits for routines and skills, affect the survival prospects for firms in industrial clusters. We consider knowledge transmission via two channels: those from inherited linkages and those from geographic proximity. It is found that a firm’s historical links formed through parent-spinoff networks have a significant impact on survival, which differ depending on the motivations of the entrepreneur. Moreover, the gains with respect to location are found to be nonlinear.

Abstract:
When the special moments of life and death are imminent, where do you want to be? My thesis seeks to create an eco-sensitive, sustainable building that celebrates the time and place of two of life s most amazing events: birth and death. Rather than a conventional singular center, my thesis proposes a combined program for a new architectural project type: a Birthing and Hospice Center. Although the concept may be surprising, once people fully understand that we live in a closed system and embrace the cyclical nature of life, it is an appropriate program that represents another aspect of sustainability. The project site is located in an urban area of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia along the Potomac River. The Birthing and Hospice Center integrates both the human life cycle and the material life cycle of the building s materials, water, and site for a holistic experience and celebration. It explores how to heighten our environmental experience of place, light, air, water, and time. My thesis seeks to create a beautiful place where people can celebrate their own special event, while at the same time, understand and celebrate the larger realm of the natural life cycle.<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
King Henry VIII (1487-1547) famously severed ties with Roman Catholocism and nationalized the church in England in order to secure an annulment from his wife. His decision instigated the Henrician Reformation (1527-1547), a subset of the English Reformation. The king assumed the title 'Supreme Head of the English Church' and vested himself with the power to reform his country's church/ Occasional liturgies - the formal religious ceremonies surrounding birth, marriage, and death - were prime opportunities to publicly display new doctrines and procedures. Instead, these rituals changed surprisingly little and largely mirrored the pageantry performed by his parents. Two conclusions are drawn from the results. First, the modern perception of Henry VIII as an all-powerful rebel is challenged due to his careful observance of the liturgy in order to achieve a desired outcome, whether it be a proper christening, wedding, or state funeral. Second, these royal rituals are shown to not only demonstrate religious beliefs, but also social and political realities as well. These two principles add complexity to understanding the course of the Henrician Reformation.

Abstract:
Feminist and social historians have long been interested in that particularly female ability to become pregnant and bear children. A significant body of historiography has challenged the notion that pregnancy and childbirth considered to be the acceptable and 'appropriate' roles for women for most of the twentieth century in Australia - have always been welcomed, rewarding and always fulfilling events in women's lives. Several historians have also begun the process of enlarging our knowledge of the changing cultural attitudes towards bereavement in Australia and the eschewing of the public expression of sorrow following the two World Wars; a significant contribution to scholarship which underscores the changing attitudes towards perinatal loss. It is estimated that one in four women lose a pregnancy to miscarriage, and two in one hundred late pregnancies result in stillbirth in contemporary Australia. Miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death are today considered by psychologists and social workers, amongst others, as potentially significant events in many women's lives, yet have received little or passing attention in historical scholarship concerned with pregnancy and motherhood. As such, this study focuses on pregnancy loss: the meaning it has been given by various groups at different times in Australia's past, and how some Australian women have made sense of their own experience of miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death within particular social and historical contexts. Pregnancy loss has been understood in a range of ways by different groups over the past 100 years. At the beginning of the twentieth century, when alarm was mounting over the declining birth rate, pregnancy loss was termed 'foetal wastage' by eugenicists and medical practitioners, and was seen in abstract terms as the loss of necessary future Australian citizens. By the 1970s, however, with the advent of support groups such as SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support) miscarriage and stillbirth were increasingly seen as the devastating loss of an individual baby, while the mother was seen as someone in need of emotional and other support. With the advent of new prenatal screening technologies in the late twentieth century, there has been a return of the idea of maternal responsibility for producing a 'successful' outcome. This project seeks to critically examines the wide range of socially constructed meanings of pregnancy loss and interrogate the arguments of those groups, such as the medical profession, religious and support groups, participating in these constructions. It will build on existing histories of motherhood, childbirth and pregnancy in Australia and, therefore, also the history of Australian women.

Abstract:
Montana Power collapsed amid images of TV reporters for Sixty Minutes chasing flustered Robert Gannon in Butte. The loss of two and a half billion dollars as well as the complete liquidation of thousands of shareholders created this Warhol moment for the firm\'s last president and Montana Power. Other dire consequences followed for the state: loss of Montana\'s only Fortune 500 firm, a doubling of utility bills and the loss of hundreds of jobs for the already depressed Butte area. Montana Power\'s importance transcends this slapstick \"fifteen minutes\" of fame moment at its demise. Montana Power became one of the few utilities to break from state price regulation during the deregulation mania of the 1990\'s. In a jarring development, the firm dissipated all its assets and dissolved shortly thereafter amidst a great deal of controversy. However, besides the failure of the firm after the heated deregulation battle, three other areas of the history of this utility proved pivotal in political, economic and environmental terms for not only the state, but also the rest of the West and the United States, as the events surrounding the Butte firm were often regional or national in scope and importance. First, the creation of the predecessors of the firm occurred at the very dawn of the electrical revolution at the turn of the nineteenth century. Powerful men and institutions from the Eastern United States set up the firm in a colonial-style environment and guided the development of the state. With the electricity revolution, dams, power lines, reservoirs, mills and logging operations appeared throughout the landscape. Second, the Great Depression produced an epic battle between public power advocates and trustbusters versus the Butte firm. The New Deal commenced building the Ft. Peck Dam and power stations, while working diligently to break up the utility trusts that included Montana Power. Third, lengthy car lines at gas pumps in the 1970\'s signaled the onset of the first energy crisis. The power company\'s attempt to generate energy using steam from coal mined in Eastern Montana set off a literal war with newly emergent environmental movement.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the cultural and political underpinnings of female infanticide and sex selective abortion in contemporary South India. Based on a fifteen months' ethnographic fieldwork in western parts of Salem district in Tamil Nadu, I explore the ideas and practices around deaths of (un)born children - particularly in the context of issues of gender-selective child survival, use and control over new reproductive technologies for sex selection, fertility and reproduction. Elucidating further the ethnographic contexts of state and non-state (primarily NGO) interventions in these deaths, the thesis examines the new forms of governance on issues that affect contemporary Tamil women. I discuss three different discourses by the government, by NGOs, and by the communities on the meaning and context of these deaths including the ways in which these meanings and ideas are reconceptualised and re-configured into a changing social and cultural context of birth. My thesis, therefore, contributes to the anthropology of reproduction. The underlying questions of the thesis are: Why has female infanticide, which was claimed to be effectively controlled in nineteenth century colonial India, appeared in post-colonial (South) India - in the form of both sex selective abortion and female infanticide - in communities and regions where it was previously claimed to be unknown? What effects could these social practices have on contemporary women' s positions and their developments and vice-versa? In answering these questions. the thesis makes a significant departure from previous anthropological studies on female infanticide in India in that it does not solely look into one single unit (village/s in this case), but uses a multi-sited approach, covering a wider geographical area, i.e parts of Salem, Dharmapuri, and Erode districts of Tamil Nadu. The thesis also shifts from the purely demographic approach to female infanticide in that it does not generate a new data set on felmale infanticide. Rather, it engages with the institutional responses and their rhetoric on female infanticide and sex selective abortion.

Abstract:
This thesis works towards a redefinition of the representation of heroic masculinity in the autobiographical narratives written by the canonical British war poets in response to the Great War. The texts have been analysed from the perspective of the tension between two myths: the ‘Victorian hero myth’ and the ‘Ghost myth.’ The Victorian hero myth refers to the representation of heroic masculinity in mid-to late-nineteenth century Britain, based on the epic and romance traditions and on an essentialist conception of manhood promoted by imperial propaganda, the Boer War experience and the public-school ethos. The Ghost myth, on the other hand, emphasises the idea that the Great War destroyed the representation of the soldier and of war itself as heroic, highlighting not only the discontinuities with a heroic past but the figure of the soldier as a ghost, a weak, vulnerable and emasculated human being. Although the texts under study are regarded as significant examples of the Ghost myth, this thesis argues that such a view is too limited and simplistic as regards the representation of war and, most essentially, of the figure of the soldier, taking insufficiently into account the complexity of response to a diverse and multifaceted experience. A close and detailed analysis of the selected war diaries, letters, memoirs and autobiographical novels shows that much of the finest literature of the Great War refuses single-minded interpretations and transcends the conventional patriotic-heroic and protest-anti-heroic readings to explore the ambiguities and contradictions and to eventually redefine the heroic ideal. This thesis essentially focuses on how the tension between the two dominant myths is expressed in the relational aspect – the soldier’s attitudes towards the comrade, the friend, the lover, the enemy and the coward – not only from the perspective of an identity crisis but also as the source of a viable alternative model of heroic masculinity.

Abstract:
Phylogenetics is the study of the evolutionary relationship between species. Inference of phylogeny relies heavily on statistical models that have been extended and refined tremendously over the past years into very complex hierarchical models. Paper I introduces probabilistic graphical models to statistical phylogenetics and elaborates on the potential advantages a unified graphical model representation could have for the community, e.g., by facilitating communication and improving reproducibility of statistical analyses of phylogeny and evolution. Once the phylogeny is reconstructed it is possible to infer the rates of diversification (speciation and extinction). In this thesis I extend the birth-death process model, so that it can be applied to incompletely sampled phylogenies, that is, phylogenies of only a subsample of the presently living species from one group. Previous work only considered the case when every species had the same probability to be included and here I examine two alternative sampling schemes: diversified taxon sampling and cluster sampling. Paper II introduces these sampling schemes under a constant rate birth-death process and gives the probability density for reconstructed phylogenies. These models are extended in Paper IV to time-dependent diversification rates, again, under different sampling schemes and applied to empirical phylogenies. Paper III focuses on fast and unbiased simulations of reconstructed phylogenies. The efficiency is achieved by deriving the analytical distribution and density function of the speciation times in the reconstructed phylogeny.<br><p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 1: Manuscript. Abstract:

Iuliano, Antonella. "Analysis of a birth and death process with alternating rates and of a telegraph process with underlying random walk." Doctoral thesis, Universita degli studi di Salerno, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10556/311.

Full text
Abstract:
2010 - 2011<br>My thesis for the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics (November 1, 2008 - October 31, 2011) at University of Salerno, Italy, has been oriented to the analysis of two stochastic models, with particular emphasis on the de- termination of their probability laws and related properties. The discussion of the doctoral dissertation will be given in 20 March 2012. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of a birth and death process with alternating rates. We recall that an extensive survey on birth- death processes (BDP) has been provided by Parthasarathy and Lenin [3]. In this work the authors adopt standard methods of analysis (such as power series technique and Laplace transforms) to find explicit expressions for the transient and stationary distributions of BDPs and provide applications of such results to specific fields (communication systems, chemical and biolog- ical models). In particular, in Section 9 they use BDPs to describe the time changes in the concentrations of the components of a chemical reaction and discuss the role of BDPs in the study of diatomic molecular chains. More- over, the paper by StockMayer et al. [4] gives an example of application of stochastic processes in the study of chain molecular diffusion. In this work a molecule is modeled as a freely-joined chain of two regularly alternating kinds of atoms. All bonds have the same length but the two kinds of atoms have alternating jump rates, i.e. the forward and backward jump rates for even labeled beads are α and β, respectively, and these rates are reversed for odd labeled beads. The authors obtain the exact timedependent aver- age length of bond vectors. Inspired by this works, Conolly [1] studied an infinitely long chain of atoms joined by links of equal length. The links are assumed to be subject to random shocks, that force the atoms to move and the molecule to diffuse. The shock mechanism is different according to whether the atom occupies an odd or an even position on the chain. The originating stochastic model is a randomized random walk on the integers with an unusual exponential pattern for the inter-step time intervals. The authors analyze some features of this process and investigate also its queue counterpart, where the walk is confined to the non negative integers. Stimulated by the above researches, a birth and death process N(t) on the integers with a transition rate λ from even states and a possibly different rate μ from odd states has been studied in the first part of the thesis. A de- tailed description of the model is performed, and the Chapman-Kolmogorov equations are introduced. Then, the probability generating functions of even and odd states are then obtained. These allow to evaluate the transition probabilities of the process for arbitrary integer initial state. Certain sym- metry properties of the transition probabilities are also pinpointed. Then, the birth and death process obtained by superimposing a reecting bound- ary in the zero-state is analyzed. In particular, by making use of a Laplace transform approach, the probability of a transition from state 0 or state 1 to the zero-state is obtained. Formulas for mean and variance of both processes are finally provided. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of a generalized telegraph process with an underlying random walk. The classical telegraph process describes a random motion on the real line characterized by two _nite velocities with opposite directions, where the velocity changes are governed by a time-homogeneous Poisson process (see Orsingher [2]). The novelty in the proposed model consists in the use of new rules for velocity changes, which are now governed by a sequence of Bernoulli trials. This implies that the random times separating consecutive changes of direction of the mov- ing particle have a general distribution and form a non-regular alternating renewal process. Starting from the origin, the running particle performs an alternating motion with velocities c and -v (c; v > 0). The direction of the motion (forward and backward) is determined by the velocity sign. The particle changes the direction according to the outcome of a Bernoulli trial. Hence, this defines a (possibly asymmetric) random walk governing the choice of the velocity at any epoch. By adopting techniques based on renewal theory, the general form of probability law is determined as well as the mean of the process. Furthermore, two instances are investigated in detail, in which the random intertimes between consecutive velocity changes are exponentially distributed with (i) constant rates and with (ii) linearly increasing rates. In the first case, explicit expressions of the transition den- sity and of the conditional mean of the process are expressed as series of Gauss hypergeometric functions. The second case leads to a damped ran- dom motion, for which we obtain the transition density in closed form. It is interesting to note that the latter case yields a logistic stationary density. Abstract:
The one child policy is considered one of the most radical population policies in the last century. Although the policy was intended to control population growth, it also had social and economic consequences. Despite the national level influences of the policy, this thesis focuses on the influences of the one child policy on individuals in China. In order to collect individuals’ thoughts about the influence of the policy, I conducted 50 interviews in 2016 in China. All respondents are Chinese citizens and have been impacted by the policy in various ways. The interviews show that the one child policy has influenced Chinese people in different ways, on the national level. Individuals’ desire to have children, opinions about having siblings and the sex preference of children seem different among the younger generation born under this policy than for older Chinese.

Abstract:
Conclusão: A complementação dos dados pelo SIM fornece um perfil diferente da prevalência de DC do que aquele que seria registrado apenas pelo SINASC, mostrando a importância do uso conjunto das duas fontes de dados.<br>Introduction: Live Birth Information System (SINASC) is an important instrument to monitor birth defects (BD) at the birth, however it has fulfilling imperfections of this information and they are probably registered in the Birth Certificates (BC) the BD more apparent, what can under estimate the prevalence of the some ones. The linkage of the data of SINASC and of SIM (Mortality Information System) allows the recovery of information about BD registered in SIM complementing the data and supplying a more real estimate of the prevalence of BD. Objective: Come with the prevalence of BD in a cohort of live birth (LB) associating the data base of SIM and the SINASC. Methods: Descriptive study to evaluate BD as source of information about BD. The population of study is the LB hospital of 1° semester of 2006 of resident mothers and that had happened in São Paulo city in the period from 01/01/2006 to 06/30/2006 and neonatal deaths from the cohort. The differences of carriers and not carrying of BD had been tested through the relative risk, p value and CI 95%. Results: According to SINASC the most prevalent birth defects were: birth defects and osteomuscular system deformity (44,7%), birth defects of nervous system (10,0%) and cromossomics anomalies not classified in another part (8,6%). Through linkage, it had a recovery of 48 cases (80,0%) of BD of circulatory system, 11 cases (73,3%) of BD of respiratory system and 5 cases (62,5%) of other BD of digestive system. SINASC made 55,2% of the notifications of BD and SIM notified 44,8%, showing its importance to recovery data of BD presents in Death Certificate (DC). The tax of prevalence for the BD of cohort according to SINASC was 75,4/10.000 LB; with all the data corrected by SIM, this tax changed for 86,2/10.000 LB. The variable age of mother, pregnancy age, birth type, Apgar, sex and weight at birth are associated to the presence of BD (p<0,001). Association between the years of study, marital status, parity, previous dead children, prenatal, pregnancy type, race and the presence of BD were not found. Conclusion: Data complementing by SIM supplies a different profile of prevalence of BD from those ones that would be registered only by SINASC showing the importance of the usage of two data sources.

Lawn, J. E. "4 million neonatal deaths : an analysis of available cause-of-death data and systematic country estimates with a focus on 'birth asphyxia'." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2009. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/19027/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Of the world’s four million neonatal deaths, 99% occur in low/middleincome countries, but most information relates to the 1% dying in high-income countries. Reliable cause-of-death data are lacking. The aim of this thesis is to develop programmatically-relevant, national estimates for neonatal cause-of-death, focusing on “birth asphyxia” to illustrate specific challenges in the available data and for systematic national estimates. Objectives: 1. Review estimation methods, giving implications for neonatal cause-of-death estimation. 2. Propose programmatic categories for neonatal cause-of-death, reviewing measurement options for intrapartum-related outcomes (“birth asphyxia”). 3. Identify and analyse existing neonatal cause-of-death data. 4. Estimate intrapartum-related neonatal deaths for all countries, comparing single-cause and multi-cause models. 5. Summarise priorities for improving neonatal cause-of-death estimates and input data. Data inputs: Case definitions were reviewed for neonatal cause-of-death and intrapartumrelated outcomes. Six programmatically relevant cause-of-death categories were defined, plus a residual “other neonatal” category. Two sources of neonatal cause-of-death data were examined: Vital Registration (VR) datasets for countries with high coverage (>90%) based on a new analysis from 83 countries; and published/unpublished studies identified through systematic searches. Inclusion criteria for representativeness and comparability were applied. Data from 44 countries with VR (96,797 neonatal deaths) and from 56 studies (29 countries, 13,685 neonatal deaths) met inclusion criteria, despite screening almost 7,000 abstracts. These data represent <3% of the world’s neonatal deaths. Thus estimation is necessary for global level information. No useable data were identified from Central and North-West Africa, or Central Asia. Modelling: Methods were developed to estimate intrapartum-related neonatal deaths (single-cause), and then simultaneously estimate seven causes of neonatal death (multi-cause). Applying these proportions to the numbers of neonatal deaths in 192 countries gives a global estimate of intrapartum-related neonatal deaths of 0.90 (0.65-1.17) million using single-cause and 0.91 (0.60-1.08) million using multi-cause methods. Discussion: The multi-cause model has become WHO’s standard method for neonatal cause-of-death estimates. However, complex statistical models are not a panacea. More representative data are required. Simplified case definitions and consistent hierarchical cause-of- death attribution would improve comparability, especially for intrapartum-related deaths.

<p>The aim of this thesis is to formulate and implement an algorithm that calculates the probability for two genes being orthologs, given a gene tree and a species tree. To do this, reconciliations between the gene tree and the species trees are used. A birth and death process is used to model the evolution, and used to calculate the orthology probability. The birth and death parameters are approximated with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). A MCMC framework for probability calculations of reconciliations written by Arvestad et al. (2003) is used. Rules for orthologous reconciliations are developed and implemented to calculate the probability for the reconciliations that have two genes as orthologs. The rules where integrated with the Arvestad et al. (2003) framework, and the algorithm was then validated and tested.</p>

Darbo objektas – apoloniškumo ir dionisiškumo tragiškumas. Darbo tikslas: analizuoti tragedijos gimimą ir mirtį F. Nietzsche‘s filosofiniame veikale „Tragedijos gimimas ir mirtis“. Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Pristatyti apoloniškumo sampratą metafizine prasme; 2. Pateikti apoloniškumo sampratą estetine prasme; 3. Supažindinti su dionisiškojo prado samprata; 4. Priešpastatyti dionisiškumą sokratiškumui ir platoniškumui. Darbo problema. Antruoju atveju apoloniškumas suvokiamas, kaip grynas estetinis grožis.<br>The object – tragedy of Apolonas and Dionisius origins. Tasks: Introduction to the concept of Apolonas origin metaphysical sense; The aesthetic concept of Apolonas origin; Introduction to the concept of Dionisius origin; Show opposition between origin of Dionisius and Socrates Work problem: In his work Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche reveals the basis of Apolonas and Dionisius origins, realeasing their differences and contradictions, and at the same time giving treir synthesis. Nietzsche’s perception, which revealed the piece is heavily influenced by A. Schopenhauer, the will of the visual understanding, which is based of Apolonas origin and Wagner’s music perception, which affects how origin of Dionisius is originated. Nietzsche based on Schopenhauer compares primal element of Apolonas origin presents as plastic visual, which he equates to the dream. The philosopher divides origin of Apolonas into two parts: the methaphysics and aesthetics. In the firs case origin of Apolonas is perceived as a certain threshold, which define what is good and right, as well as it doesn’t excess moderation limits. In the latter case, origin of Apolonas is perceived as pure aesthetic beauty.

Our thesis tries to find answers to many questions as: is the writing of DVC a writing of birth or of death? What are the particularities of his novels’ universe? How do this universe and the writing take shape? What kind of space the novels constitute? This research is composed of three parts: the first, Cauwalaert’s signature, studies the stylistic particularities of the writer. We develop his style, the piecemeal, playful, musical writing, and we show how he stylizes his texts by developing possible texts. We analyze also the psychocritic nucleus revealing his personal myth and we study the multiple sub-genres of his novels: the fantastic, comic and police ones. The second part is entitled the inter actions around the text. It envisages the relations uniting the writer to his texts, to the lector and to other writers. We ask the genesis of this fictional universe and the image of the writer through his novels. The third and last part, the massif of novels, aims the casting, the distribution of roles, the fiction and the form of narration. This part of the study envisages the diachronic progression of all the novels. We look into the evolution of the writer and his relationship with his time. Finally, we analyze the space of the novels that gives structure to a novel-space which is a universe of hope and emotion where the narrative instances melt and the perception creates a miniature world
