SummaryIn Canadian society the influence of first birth timing on the subsequent birth interval has been eroded over time, as shown by the Canadian Fertility Survey of 1984. The influence of first birth timing is significant for second births among women married during the baby boom period, but not for those married thereafter. Religiosity, marital status, and place of residence are significant factors in second birth timing in Canada.

ABSTRACTIn this column, a father shares fond memories of the births of his three children in the 1970s. His story highlights the importance of knowledge and a willingness to speak up to have a positive birth experience. Although the births—an unexpected cesarean, a vaginal birth after cesarean, and a home birth—took place decades ago, the choices this couple faced and the challenges they experienced are not too different from today.

In some cases this does not elucidate about using any analgesics during labour but having other medical interventions without analgesics. Women are made to rely on relaxation techniques and controlled breathing to help alleviate pain. While this type of birth sounds like it would take place in a birthing centre with a midwife or a doula, it can also take place in a hospital.
