Highman, Kathryn Barbara. "A study of Ted Hughes's Birthday letters." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002235.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focusses on the literary self-reflexivity of Birthday Letters, Ted Hughes's collection of poems addressed to his long-dead first wife, poet Sylvia Plath. By close attention to the language of select poems and a discussion of cross-referencing images and allusions across the volume, and intertextually, I argue that the collection is more self-consciously ordered and designed than the mainly biographical criticism the work has met with suggests. The thesis focusses on the poets' art rather than the biographical context of Birthday Letters, though it does not draw a neat distinction between their lives and their poetry - rather it demonstrates how Birthday Letters itself treats the relationship of art to life thematically. The introduction outlines the context of the volume's genesis and publication and the notions of poetry, myth and drama out of which Hughes works, and introduces the central metaphor of metamorphosis as figured in Ariel's song "Full Fathom Five" from The Tempest, as well as the importance of that play to Plath. Each of the chapters that follow focusses on a cluster of inter-related imagery through a discussion of four or five key poems. Chapter One examines Hughes's portrayal of himself as imprisoned by Plath's poetic portraits, and relates this to the recurring motifs of the snapshot and the Medusa myth. The poems discussed emphasize Hughes's consciousness of the metamorphic and "magical" relationship of art to life. The second chapter discusses Hughes's use of the myth of the labyrinth and the Minotaur, tracing it back to Plath's writings and reading, and pointing out its self-reflexivity: the labyrinth figures Hughes's own loss as well as the labyrinthine nature of writing. The third chapter considers the themes of possession and loss, and how they attach themselves to images of houses and jewels. Possession and loss tum, self-reflexively, upon issues of inheritance and remembrance, notably Hughes's inheritance of Plath's poetic legacy, and his remembrance of her and her poetry through his own poetry. The conclusion pursues connections between the observations made in the separate chapters, outlining the larger context out of which the poems emerge, and returning to the trope of metamorphosis as figured in "Full Fathom Five"

Ingmire, George. "Life is a One-Way Ticket: Herman Leonard's Eightieth Birthday Celebration." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2004. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/74.

Full text
Abstract:
Life is a One-Way Ticket is a twenty-three minute documentary about jazz photographer Herman Leonard's 80th birthday party. The event took place at Rosy's Jazz Hall, a club in the uptown section of New Orleans where musicians including Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Stevie Wonder once performed. Within the documentary, I show the celebration as an analogy for the life of Herman Leonard. In short but moving passages, Herman Leonard reflects upon the nature of his longevity, the world today, and the "luck" he has had with photography. In addition to the voice of Herman Leonard, interviews with Herman Leonard's friends and family show him as both a world-class photographer and the down-toearth human being. Upon completion of the documentary, the final cut will be authored onto a DVD. This will allow for extra features, including an extended interview with Herman Leonard.

Watson, Marva J. "The Historical Figures of the Birthday Cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach." OpenSIUC, 2010. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/157.

Full text
Abstract:
Johann Sebastian Bach is credited with writing over 300 cantatas. Sacred cantatas comprise most of that repertory, but there are just under forty known secular cantatas composed by Bach. About half of these secular cantatas were written to celebrate a person’s birthday. This thesis will attempt to provide a view of the life of the historical figures for which the birthday cantatas were written, reflections of the personality of the individual in the cantata, Bach’s relationship to the recipient, and political or social connotations associated with the work. From a study of the individuals connected with the musical work, a more thorough understanding of the time period in which Bach lived and worked may be gained. This in turn will provide a more complete understanding of Bach’s birthday cantatas. This thesis will not address recipients of name day cantatas nor will it address recipients of birthday cantatas that were not fully preserved. These are the historical figures and works that will be examined: Duke Christian of Saxe-Weißenfels, including references to Dukes Wilhelm Ernst and Ernst August of Saxe-Weimar, Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd, BWV 208; Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen, Durchlauchtster Leopold, BWV 173a; Crown Prince Friedrich Christian of Saxony, Laßt uns sorgen, laßt uns wachen, BWV 213; Maria Joseph, Archduchess of Austria, Electress of Saxony, Queen of Poland, Tönet, ihr Pauken! Erschallet, Trompeten, BWV 214; and Augustus III, Elector of Saxony, King of Poland Schleicht, spielende Wellen, BWV 206.

Abstract:
A well known birthday paradox is one the most important problems in cryptographic applications. Incremental hash functions or digital signatures in public key cryptography and low-weight parity check equations of LFSRs in stream ciphers are examples of such applications which benet from birthday problem theories to run their attacks. Wagner introduced and formulated the k-dimensional birthday problem and proposed an algorithm to solve the problem in O(k.m^ 1/log k ). The generalized birthday solutions used in some applications to break Knapsack based systems or collision nding in hash functions. The optimized birthday algorithms can solve Knapsack problems of dimension n which is believed to be NP-hard. Its equivalent problem is Subset Sum Problem nds the solution over Z/mZ. The main property for the classication of the problem is density. When density is small enough the problem reduces to shortest lattice vector problem and has a solution in polynomial time. Assigning a variable to each element of the lists, decoding them into a matrix and considering each row of the matrix as an equation lead us to have a multivariate polynomial system of equations and all solution of this type can be a solution for the k- list problem such as F4, F5, another strategy called eXtended Linearization (XL) and sl. We discuss the new approaches and methods proposed to reduce the complexity of the algorithms. For particular cases in over-determined systems, more equations than variables, regarding to have a single solutions Wolf and Thomea work to make a gradual decrease in the complexity of F5. Moreover, his group try to solve the problem by monomials of special degrees and linear equations for small lists. We observe and compare all suggested methods in this

Lanctot, Heather, and Heather Lanctot. "The Birthday of the Infanta: An Early Twentieth-Century Chicago Ballet Contextualized." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12465.

Abstract:
The Birthday of the Infanta, a ballet that was created by John Alden Carpenter, Adolph Bolm, and Robert Edmond Jones, was performed at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on December 23, 1919 and the Lexington Theatre in New York on February 23, 1920. Despite the positive reviews from daily papers and music journals alike the ballet was only revived once and is not a part of a known ballet repertoire. Although musicologist Howard Pollack discusses The Birthday of the Infanta briefly in his biography of John Alden Carpenter my analysis serves, through its exploration of both primary and secondary sources, to create a more complete and thorough dialogue through the examination of the social, economic, political and artistic factors surrounding the ballet. This analysis also helps to create a better understanding of ballet’s place in America in the early twentieth century.

Abstract:

Condolences to All of You assembles various poems whose creation spans the period between late 2011 and late 2014, with the vast majority formed during the latter half of that time. Included are conceptual poems of a visual or ideological nature, narrative poems exploring adolescence and ecology, and lyrical examinations of the crisis of mortality in the twenty-first century. Many of these darkly humorous poems obscure distinctions between elegy, eulogy, epitaph and celebration, while pleading for the imagination's affirmation in a human era of purported existential certainty. The essay preceding the poems debates their roles and merits among the flailing despair of twentieth century literary criticism, and puts forth a guide to formal and content-driven motives for the mechanics of the poems themselves.

Hamisi, Jonathan. "Defining The Geochemical Footprint For Gold Mineralisation Around Birthday Reef.Reefton Goldfield, New Zealand." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för geologiska vetenskaper, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-132115.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Orogenic gold deposits from the Reefton goldfield in New Zealand hosted in Ordovician metasediments of the Greenland group have produce 67 tons of gold before 1951. The Blackwater mine in Waiuta account for about 1/3 of the gold production at Reefton prior 1951. The ore system at Blackwater consist of NE trending steeply dipping gold-bearing quartz veins (Birthday reef) occurring in faulted, sheared and folded alternating sequence of sandstone-mudstone metamorphosed to low greenschist facies and hydrothermally altered proximal to distal from the quartz vein. Host rock and ore forming fluids interaction resulted in a systematic change in the mineralogy and geochemistry of the wallrock developing a distinctive footprint of the ore system. The mineral assemblage subsequent to hydrothermal alteration is formed by quartz veining, chlorite, carbonates (minor calcite-dolomite-ankerite-siderite), albite, K-Mica and composite quartz-carbonate veining, carbonates spotting, pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, cobaltite, galena and in a lesser extent ullmannite, gersdorffite, pentlandite, millerite and sphalerite. Mass balance calculation based on geochemical data obtained by ultra-low detection analysis with a detection limit in part per trillion of Au, As and Sb provide new insight in the geochemical footprint of the ore system at Blackwater. A clear zone of roughly 40 meters (20 meters above and below the birthday reef) is enriched in Au, As and Sb up to respectively 6806%, 605% and 891% compared to the un-mineralised protolith. Furthermore, mass changes in K2O and Na2O indicate a consistent decrease in Na and increase in K in the vicinity of the Birthday reef reflecting the replacement of albite by K-mica. This is corroborated by pattern of alkali alteration index Na/Al for albite and 3K/Al for K-Mica showing similar trend. Carbonation and de/-hydration index also exhibits peaks in samples adjacent to the Birthday reef, though carbonation index is also influenced by carbonates content in the protolith or late carbonation that may not related to gold mineralisation. Using the indicators above-mentioned it is possible to define the mineralogical and geochemical “footprint” for the ore system in the host rock allowing to use this footprint as a tool for mineral exploration for orogenic gold deposits similar to Blackwater. Given that the geochemical footprint of orogenic gold deposit such as Blackwater is significantly wider than the economically viable part of the deposit defining the footprint of the ore system offers the potential for vectoring from sub-economic mineralisation towards higher-grade ore that is economically viable.

Abu-Arja, Dalia. "A psychoanalytical approach to Harold Pinter's plays : 'Old Times', 'The Homecoming' and 'The Birthday Party'." Thesis, University of Salford, 2018. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/49077/.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis presents an analysis of a number of Harold Pinter's plays, by using a Freudian psychoanalytical approach aligned with a close reading of the following works: Old Times (1971), The Homecoming (1965) and The Birthday Party (1957). Furthermore, the thesis aims at conducting a thorough analysis of the selected plays, by using key Freudian concepts such as the Oedipus complex, the castration complex, the 'uncanny,' aggression and dream analysis, and by providing an alternative understanding Pinter's plays from a psychoanalytical point of view. The method used herein involves critical analysis, starting with a close reading of the abovementioned works and Freudian material consisting of the Freudian psychoanalytical terms mentioned earlier. The thesis proposes that, the psychoanalytical terms applied here support a substantial analysis of the plays. This is particularly the case, I argue, because Pinter, through his creative writing process, produces complex plays that touch on controversial subjects including sexual aggression and unconventional dysfunctional familial dynamics. The other method I used is conducting a psychoanalytic reading of the theatre event, including a review of the reception of the plays and aspects of design, thus connecting theatre and theatricality, sexual dynamics, Pinter's process and Freudian theory. The study is supported by a reading of extant literature addressing Freud, Pinter and literature which links them with each other and with the theatre in general. The other resources and data I have drawn on include witnessing live performances of the selected plays, watching recorded film adaptations and archive including interviews with the actors, with directors, Pinter's own commentary and that of his wife Lady Antonia Fraser.

Clarke, Steven Warren. "Environmental and Dispositional Factors Related to College Students' Alcohol Consumption during Twenty-First Birthday Celebrations." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27653.

Full text
Abstract:
Three studies were conducted to investigate dispositional and environmental factors related to alcohol consumption during 21st birthday celebrations, and test an internet-based intervention designed to reduce alcohol consumption during 21st birthday celebrations (21BDCs). Results of Study 1 indicated the majority of alcoholic beverages (79.3%) are consumed rapidly. Rapid consumption was positively related to drinking history and normative perceptions, and negatively related to perceptions of behavioral control. The relation between sociocultural beliefs and rapid consumption are mediated by normative perceptions and perceptions of behavioral control. The major objectives of Study 2 were to explore: a) 21BDC planning behaviors and the physical and social 21BDC environment, b) the relation between intoxication and planning behaviors, celebratory behaviors, and the 21BDC environment, and c) the frequency of various alcohol-related negative outcomes. Results indicate 26.4% of the participants exceeded an eBAL of .26. Intoxication during 21BDCs is enabled by the availability of free drinks, and having a friend to look after oneself or monitor alcohol consumption does not lead to lower levels of intoxication. The most frequent negative outcomes were hangovers, blackouts and vomiting, with 50% of celebrants experiencing at least one of these outcomes. Study 3 tested a web-based intervention designed to reduce intoxication and negative outcomes during 21BDCs. The intervention was implemented four weeks before the 21st birthday, was designed to: a) change perceptions of drinking norms during 21st birthday celebrations, b) increase perceptions of behavioral control over alcohol consumption, and c) counter social pressures to consumer alcohol during the weeks leading up to the celebration. Results indicated no significant reductions in number of alcoholic beverages consumed, intoxication or negative outcomes, as compared to a traditional 21st birthday card intervention and no-intervention controls. While students were not motivated to implement many of the suggested harm-reduction strategies, there was a significant increase in the consumption of food and non-alcoholic beverages among participants receiving the web-based intervention. Development and implementation of effective interventions to reduce intoxication during 21BDC remains a significant challenge.

Harayama, Tomohiro. "A method of Weil sum in multivariate quadratic cryptosystem." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/5938.

Full text
Abstract:
A new cryptanalytic application is proposed for a number theoretic tool Weil sum to the birthday attack against multivariate quadratic trapdoor function. This new customization of the birthday attack is developed by evaluating the explicit Weil sum of the underlying univariate polynomial and the exact number of solutions of the associated bivariate equation. I designed and implemented new algorithms for computing Weil sum values so that I could explicitly identify some class of weak Dembowski- Ostrom polynomials and the equivalent forms in the multivariate quadratic trapdoor function. This customized attack, also regarded as an equation solving algorithm for the system of some special quadratic equations over finite fields, is fundamentally different from the Grobner basis methods. The theoretical observations and experiments show that the required computational complexity of the attack on these weak polynomial instances can be asymptotically less than the square root complexity of the common birthday attack by a factor as large as 2^(n/8) in terms of the extension degree n of F2n. I also suggest a few open problems that any MQ-based short signature scheme must explicitly take into account for the basic design principles.

Abstract:

A mixed-method explanatory sequential design utilizing surveys and interviews conducted at three Florida library systems examines caregivers’ perceptions of emergent literacy programming, how these perceptions compare with the National Research Council’s Features for Quality Programs for children, and what is their motivation for attending these programs. The results from the survey and interview reveal that caregivers’ perceptions of emergent literacy programming align with the National Research Council’s Features for Quality Programs. The data shows caregivers’ perceptions are very positive toward emergent literacy programming in terms of learning and the environment. Themes emphasized in the interviews on why caregivers are motivated to attend include socialization, getting out of the house, and free access. The results of these surveys and interviews will inform public libraries as to how to design, market, and deliver emergent literacy programming to caregivers with very young children.

Barakat, Bilal. ""Sorry I forgot your birthday!": Adjusting apparent school participation for survey timing when age is measured in whole years." Elsevier, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijedudev.2016.03.011.

Full text
Abstract:
When only whole years of age are recorded in survey data, children who experienced a birthday since the beginning of the school year may appear to be of school-age when they are not, or vice-versa. This creates an error in estimates of school participation indicators based on such data. This issue is well-known in education statistics, and several procedures attempting to correct for this error have been proposed. The present study critiques current practice and demonstrates that its limitations continue to confound educational research and high-stakes policy conclusions: speculative explanations have been proposed for what is actually a measurement artefact. An alternative adjustment strategy is proposed that coherently exploits all available information and explicitly indicates the remaining uncertainty. The application of the method is illustrated by a number of empirical case studies using recent household survey data. These examples demonstrate that the method is feasible, accurate, and that taking survey timing into account can significantly alter how these data are interpreted.

Nöffke, Tobias Georg. "Self-made myth : the poetic dialogue between Ted Hughes’s Birthday Letters and the poetry of Sylvia Plath in a selection of six poems." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/79293.

Full text
Abstract:
When Ted Hughes published the volume of poetry Birthday Letters in 1998, only months before his death, and after decades of silence on the subject of Sylvia Plath, it seemed he was finally offering a confessional account of his marriage to and lifelong association with the American poet. His comments on the book at the time merely promoted such a biographical reading. However, a close examination indicates that in these poems Hughes is not merely autobiographical, but that he is, instead, clearly engaging with Plath’s construction of a personal, overarching myth in order to mould his own myth. This can be seen when we compare poems from Birthday Letters with ones from the Plath oeuvre. Though Birthday Letters offers an abundance of references to Plath’s poetry, many poems address specific ones by Plath, some of them even sharing titles. The aim of this study is to examine critically and in detail three of these Plath-Hughes pairings in order to reveal the poetic dialogue between the two poets as it is manifested in these cases. Chapter 1 deals with Plath’s ‘Whiteness I Remember’, an early poem about a near-disastrous horse-riding mishap, and Hughes’s response to the piece, his poem ‘Sam’. ‘Whiteness I Remember’ displays both Plath’s appropriation of distinctly Hughesian concerns and her own developing preoccupations. The poem functions as a practice run in which she rehearses what will soon become some of her most salient motifs. Hughes, in his ‘Sam’, recognises and lays claim to this concept of the practice run, taking it from Plath’s poem and remoulding to fit his own poetic purposes. In Chapter 2 Plath’s ‘Daddy’ and Hughes’s ‘The Cast’ are analysed. Plath’s famous poem offers a speaker who, unlike the many father-worshipping speakers from earlier poems, rejects her father, metaphorically kills him, and berates herself for a lifetime of male worship. Associated with her father is her husband, and he too is killed off. In Hughes’s ‘The Cast’ we find the father recast as a befuddled being recalled from the underworld, shocked and hurt by the accusations his daughter hurls at him. Hughes himself, as fictional character and analogue of the husband in ‘Daddy’, is notably absent in this account of what Plath does to her father with her poetry. Finally, Chapter 3 investigates Plath’s ‘Brasilia’ as a foundation for Hughes’s ‘Brasilia’. Plath’s poem envisions the emergence of a future race of ‘super-people’, inhuman figures who present a threat to the speaker’s child, while Hughes’s poem presents a resurrected Plath herself, an immortal literary icon who becomes the super-human posing a threat to those left behind in the wake of her death.

Abstract:
Benjamin Britten has written solo and chamber works for the harp which extend harp technique and contribute to a twentieth century public awareness of the instrument. Unlike the majority of harp composers, Britten was internationally known and not a harpist himself. His works form a large part of all contemporary harp literature, yet his solo work and composition for harp and high voice are rarely played because of their difficulty. An examination of A Ceremony of Carols (1942), Suite for Harp (1969), and A Birthday Hansel (1975), will illustrate his contribution to harp performance and technique, and will serve as a valuable resource for harpists.

The aim of the thesis is to create a business plan, focusing on organizing children's birthday parties, social events and corporate parties, on the basis of which will be assessed the feasibility and economic advantage of the business plan. Thematically, the plan is divided into two parts. The first part covers the theoretical background, the definition of the business plan, the structure and principles of treatment, of which specific form is located in the following practical part. It contains a brief introduction, the company's mission, vision and objectives, description of business opportunities, defining the target and the total market including analysis of competition and marketing strategy. All previous points summarize the numerical form of the financial plan in three variants of development, the essence of which is to objectively assess the financial burden of the project. At the end of the thesis is the SWOT analysis, the potential risks of the project including the design of countermeasures to eliminate these effects. The whole thesis is finished with conclusion and evaluation of the business plan.

Abstract:
The particular characteristics of Pinter’s theatre such as the theme of violence, the competitive interpersonal relationships, the implied unwillingness in communication between the characters and the distinctive use of silences and pauses, distinguish his work from the writers of the absurd. Pinter makes particular use of “Silences” and “Pauses” as theatrical techniques that present a non-verbal way of communication in his plays. The frequent use of these particular techniques in Pinter’s dialogue has urged some critics to coin new expressions such as “Pinteresque” or “Pinter Pause” in the vocabulary of drama to specify Pinter’s technique. One of the important objectives in this essay is to point out the fundamental significance and function of the “Silences” and “Pauses” in Pinter’s work and point out their distinction. I will discuss how the silences and pauses function in Pinter’s theatre as a non-verbal way of communication by creating fragments in the dialogue.   The plays which will be analyzed in this essay are: The Room, The Dumb Waiter, The Birthday Party and The Caretaker. My objective in this essay is to explore the context of these plays with regards to the theme of menace. In the first chapter, I mainly aim to explore the menacing context of these plays regarding the structure of menace and the ways it takes place in each play separately. This analysis will be presented in relation to the spatial territory in which the characters are confined. My aim is also to describe why menace is presented in a theatrical sense. I have chosen to quote some significant passages of each play in each section to illustrate my purposes in the first chapter. The aim of the second chapter is to define the character types involved in the presentation of menace, “The Intruders” and “The Victims”, and to analyze the strategies their use in encounters with each other. After describing the character types I will explore in detail how “The Intruders” use linguistic strategies to confuse and subdue their victims and finally victimize them and how “The Victims” use strategies to cope with menace in order to survive. There are some passages quoted from the plays to facilitate the purpose of the second chapter. The objective in the third chapter is to define “Silences” and “Pauses” as theatrical techniques used in form of non-verbal communication between the characters. I will discuss, based on Peter Hall’s definition, how these techniques are significant in understanding a Pinter play for the readers and the actors who perform them on stage, and will further explore the function of “Silences” and “Pauses” and their distinction in the context of the plays in question in this essay.

This paper intends to discuss current forms of children s play, toys and games used in contemporary society, under a psychoanalytical perspective. Considering contemporary society as a consumer s society, under the influence of advertising and television, resulting in a culture of image and spectacle. Alongside peremptory happiness and immediatism, there is a requirement of fulfillment and competency directing people s lives, including children s. The new social logic assigns people hierarchically according to consumption possibilities: those who are or are not; who can or cannot; who have or do not have worth. As a result, depriving them of the right to autheticity and freedom since childhood. The rules are given and we try to adapt to them. As the psychoanalytical basis for this paper, I used the support of Sigmund Freud s, D. W. Winnicott s and J. Lacan s works. In the transition from a modern production society to a post-modern consumption society, I approach the subject who seeks completeness by acquiring goods, thus obliterating their own possibility to desire, play and fantasize. In the Capitalistic ideal, it is imperative to shorten the path between production and consumption. To illustrate this cultural change, I analyzed children s play and today s predominant birthday parties model, which I then compare to other more traditional forms of celebration. Moreover, I comment on the intensity of stimuli intended to entertain, motivate and teach children, but which ignore their capacities to choose, think, create, and, mostly, desire

Abstract:
This study takes as its focus Ted Hughes’s composition techniques throughout his career, arguing that his self-conscious experimentation with the processes by which he wrote affected the style and subject matter of his work. Hughes’s poetry has lent itself to a number of familiar critical approaches, focusing on his preoccupation with mythology, his interaction with the natural world and his creative partnership with his first wife, Sylvia Plath. Yet no study, until now, has looked systematically at his literary drafts and the extent to which Hughes’s method of composition radically altered during his writing career. Archive material at Emory University, accessible since 2000, and new archive materials held at the British Library and made available for study for the first time in 2010, have opened up possibilities for much greater depth of research into Hughes’s writing processes and the birth and evolution of individual poems. By engaging with these materials, my research complements new studies which are tackling under-examined areas of Hughes’s work, whilst contributing more broadly to an increased awareness of the central importance of archival work in the study of literature. Literary manuscript drafts have often been used to study writers whose writing methods consciously foreground the drafting process. Whilst Hughes has not previously been considered in this light, my original investigations into his archival materials reveal a poet for whom the nature of the compositional process was a central concern which defines and redefines his poetry across his career.

Abstract:
Tweakable block ciphers are a generalization of classical block ciphers which, in addition to a key and a plaintext or a ciphertext, take an additionnal parameter called a tweak. The goal of this new parameter is to bring variability to the block cipher without needing to change the key or to keep the tweak secret. The tweak should also be adversariallycontrollable without sacrificing security. In this thesis we study a particular class of block ciphers, namely key-alternating ciphers. More precisely, we study the security of the Even-Mansour scheme, which is an abstraction of these ciphers in the random permutation model, and seek to bring tweakability to this scheme while keeping strong security guarantees. To this end, we introduce a new generic construction, dubbed TEM, which replaces the round keys from the Even-Mansour construction by a value depending on both the key and the tweak, and study its security in two cases: when the tweak and key mixing is linear or highly non-linear. Our security proofs rely on the H-coefficients technique, a technique introduced by Jacques Patarin in his PhD thesis which transforms cryptographic problems into combinatorial problems in finite groups

Full text
Abstract:
Authenticated Encryption (AE) is the cryptographic process of providing simultaneous confidentiality and integrity protection to messages. This approach is more efficient than applying a two-step process of providing confidentiality for a message by encrypting the message, and in a separate pass providing integrity protection by generating a Message Authentication Code (MAC). AE using symmetric ciphers can be provided by either stream ciphers with built in authentication mechanisms or block ciphers using appropriate modes of operation. However, stream ciphers have the potential for higher performance and smaller footprint in hardware and/or software than block ciphers. This property makes stream ciphers suitable for resource constrained environments, where storage and computational power are limited. There have been several recent stream cipher proposals that claim to provide AE. These ciphers can be analysed using existing techniques that consider confidentiality or integrity separately; however currently there is no existing framework for the analysis of AE stream ciphers that analyses these two properties simultaneously. This thesis introduces a novel framework for the analysis of AE using stream cipher algorithms. This thesis analyzes the mechanisms for providing confidentiality and for providing integrity in AE algorithms using stream ciphers. There is a greater emphasis on the analysis of the integrity mechanisms, as there is little in the public literature on this, in the context of authenticated encryption. The thesis has four main contributions as follows. The first contribution is the design of a framework that can be used to classify AE stream ciphers based on three characteristics. The first classification applies Bellare and Namprempre's work on the the order in which encryption and authentication processes take place. The second classification is based on the method used for accumulating the input message (either directly or indirectly) into the into the internal states of the cipher to generate a MAC. The third classification is based on whether the sequence that is used to provide encryption and authentication is generated using a single key and initial vector, or two keys and two initial vectors. The second contribution is the application of an existing algebraic method to analyse the confidentiality algorithms of two AE stream ciphers; namely SSS and ZUC. The algebraic method is based on considering the nonlinear filter (NLF) of these ciphers as a combiner with memory. This method enables us to construct equations for the NLF that relate the (inputs, outputs and memory of the combiner) to the output keystream. We show that both of these ciphers are secure from this type of algebraic attack. We conclude that using a keydependent SBox in the NLF twice, and using two different SBoxes in the NLF of ZUC, prevents this type of algebraic attack. The third contribution is a new general matrix based model for MAC generation where the input message is injected directly into the internal state. This model describes the accumulation process when the input message is injected directly into the internal state of a nonlinear filter generator. We show that three recently proposed AE stream ciphers can be considered as instances of this model; namely SSS, NLSv2 and SOBER-128. Our model is more general than a previous investigations into direct injection. Possible forgery attacks against this model are investigated. It is shown that using a nonlinear filter in the accumulation process of the input message when either the input message or the initial states of the register is unknown prevents forgery attacks based on collisions. The last contribution is a new general matrix based model for MAC generation where the input message is injected indirectly into the internal state. This model uses the input message as a controller to accumulate a keystream sequence into an accumulation register. We show that three current AE stream ciphers can be considered as instances of this model; namely ZUC, Grain-128a and Sfinks. We establish the conditions under which the model is susceptible to forgery and side-channel attacks.

The collection of ten short stories, Of Flowers and Tears, aims to capture the events that have shaped my life, impacted on my community. It hopefully gives a voice to topics such as mental trauma, sibling strife, abortion, drug use and abuse, suicide, as well as political and social activism. Whilst none of the topics are new, the collection could potentially add to a growing genre of short story fiction by local authors which examine issues relating to trauma, loss, violence and the acknowledgement of identities. As South Africans, we carry many metaphoric scars (including psychological, socio-economic, sexual) as well as literal ones, which act as testimonies to our violent and frequently traumatic past and present. Even though most of the material used in my collection forms part of my personal memory bank and will be interpreted in a wholly fictional way, I propose that such a collection speaks to pertinent, present and pervasive realities.

Bremner, Pauline Ann Mary. "Gift-giving of toys from adults to children." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/1229.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study is the consumer behaviour habits of adults giving of toys to children aged 11 and under as gifts. It is borne out of a need to understand why adults buy gifts for children adding to the issues on consumption practices and materialism. It begins by discussing the issues of researching with children, outlining an exploratory artwork session conducted with children prior to making a decision to use adults as the unit of assessment for the study and to take a positivist stance. The literature review chapter explores the concepts of gift-giving of toys to children by synthesising topics of consumer behaviour and gift-giving as fields of study. It considers gift-giving models and focuses on buyer behaviour when gift-giving; information sources used in gifting; whether adults are concerned about gift-giving; adults roles and motivations in gift-gifting and relationship impacts between adults and children for incorrect gifting. These themes are researched within a demographic perspective keeping in mind the consumer socialisation issues and a figure is developed to show the hypotheses for testing. The methodology takes into account both interpretivist and positivist philosophies reaffirming the reasons for a positivist choice. Semi structured interviews are used in two phases to explore adults perceptions of gift-giving in general and gift-giving of toys to children. The main data collection instrument was a structured questionnaire which developed and extended previous researchers’ items. This questionnaire was distributed across a sample section of schools within the Aberdeen City and suburbs via a homework bag method. The value of the study lies in the contribution to knowledge through the analysis of the data. Contribution was found to exist with roles and motivations in gifting where three new roles were highlighted and one discounted. For information sources the interpersonal sources were important to mothers; the internet was found to be a new source, and mass media was found to be popular with a lower educated strata giving rise to issues for TV advertising policy. Differences existed between gifting at Christmas and birthday times and to adults’ own and other children providing contribution to the lack of birthday gifting research and to the givers’ perspective. A number of demographics such as gender, education and marital status were found to be important in understanding this gifting behaviour, whereas age on the other hand, did not. Finally, recommendations are made to policy makers from these contributions in particular regarding information sources and the education of children.

Adolf Fick’s work represents in many ways an important starting point for modern scientific research on diffusion. Diffusion itself is a slow process taking long time to progress. In this talk, we aim to discuss the progress of diffusion science. For this purpose, we present a highly subjective review of the study of diffusion since the times of Adolf Fick. Our focus is on mutual diffusion in liquids which is at the heart of many processes in (bio)chemical systems. Here, diffusion is often the rate-limiting step and thus decisive for overall process performance.

John Rutter, a world-famous British choral conductor and composer, was educated well in his childhood and the choral experience during that time has helped him to become an outstanding musician. After he was well-known, he not only established the Cambridge Singers and Collegium label, but also spared no pains to spread choral music such as being a guest-conductor or lecturer around the world. Three Birthday Madrigals was completed in 1997. It’s for two to four part female chorus and is a rearrangement from Birthday Madrigals, a choral suite including five pieces of music for mixed choir that was commissioned by Brian Kay to celebrate the seventy-fifth birthday of the great jazz pianist, George Shearing, in 1995. The texts of Three Birthday Madrigals all came from the eminent poet of Elizabethan Era of the late Renaissance Period; The first piece It was a lover and his lass came from William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the second piece My true love hath my heart is a sonnet, coming from Sir Philip Sidney’s Arcadia, and the third piece When daisies pied combined William Shakespeare’s Love''s Labour''s Lost with George Peele’s The Old Wives’ Tale. Rutter used two distinguished styles in Three Birthday Madrigals. He applied the jazz style to describe the delightful feeling of the first piece and the relaxing and pleasing feeling of the third piece. He utilized the English Partsong tradition when expressing the touching and profound love of the second piece. The most noticeable feature of the first piece is the dotted rhythm. Rutter indicated that the dotted eighth and sixteenth notes should be performed with a two-to-one ratio to interpret the swing style. The piano accompaniment sentence is extremely important, and improvisation-like manner will determine the jazz flavor firmly. The second piece preserves the unique aesthetic quality of pure human voices by having the singing a cappella. The first soprano part carries the melody most of time with the other voices supplying the harmonies. The third piece is a jazz waltz. It is similar with the first piece; the piano accompaniment plays an important role in creating atmosphere jazz and in enriching the musical color. Rutter applied smooth line against syncopation and clothed each section with legato and staccato simultaneously to make contrast. Therefore, when interpreting this piece, the choir should express the contrast clearly to make the music lively and attractive. This master report consists of seven parts: the preface, a biographic sketch of John Rutter, Rutter’s compositional genres, Rutter’s choral music, a biographic sketch of three poets, analysis and interpretation of Three Birthday Madrigals, and the conclusion. There are two appendices at the end of this paper. Appendix A supplies two e-mail letters from Rutter. Appendix B is a list of Rutter’s published secular choral music.

The short film is an original creation of short films. This original short film is describing a taxi driver, A Yang, who is actively trying his best to repair the relationship between him and his daughter, Mei, on her birthday. The real ‘Love’ is incredibly powerful. People might just overlook its power or be distracted by many daily trivia overwhelming their mind. It makes people underestimate the power of Love. In fact, love exists in everyday life and has great power in recovery and forgiveness. To repair a relationship is not easy. It requires a huge amount of time on it. As the result of the huge requirement of time, most of the people would rather ignore the broken relationships than fix them actively, just like using disposable tableware. In , A Yang, the taxi driver, does not choose to ignore the broken parent-child relationship between him and his daughter. Contrarily, he chooses to face the problem and make his efforts on repairing their relationship. Self-exploration is a crucial and indispensable part in art creation. During the creation process, creators would often be inspired by the issues that they concern. For instance, a Taiwanese contemporary artist, Hou Chun-Ming, has published a project named because he was becoming a father. Similarly, the figure prototype in was inspired by my father and the classic stereotypes of Asian men. Classic Asian men are commonly known as not being good at expressing emotions via their speaking. In this short film, , the interaction between A Yang and Mei shows the projection of social microcosm reflecting the role of classic Asian fathers in families.

Character animation is a unique form of performing arts. It primarily demonstrates the character’s personality and thought process through the character’s action. The problem of a 3-D animation is how to make the movements more natural and realistic. According to Walt Disney, animations should not only focus on a character’s action and reaction, but also the content of the action, which is the character emotion. To achieve this goal, we capture the character’s action by using 3-D virtual space, then analyze traditional animation principles and apply it on our 3-D computer animation. In addition, this production applied 3-D animation technique to create the short computer animation. The characters are designed to release positive energy to cure those with corrupted soul, and hoping to inspire viewers to value life more and courageously face life challenges. The author of this production followed the highest animation principle, which is the 12 Basic Principles of Animation created by Disney animators through their years of experience. Gift-giving is an art. Gifts could make receiver disappointed even when giver spent a significant amount of time and made efforts on it. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of thoughtfulness, emotion, expressiveness, singularization, selfless sacrifice and indexicality of the gift on recipients’ appreciation, and examine moderating effects of gender in the relationship among thoughtfulness, indexicality and recipient appreciation. A sample consisted of 242 respondents were obtained through a quota sampling procedure. The results of multiple regression analysis show thoughtfulness and indexicality positively influence recipient appreciation on flower, wallet, shoes, and perfume; and the results of hierarchical regression show gender had significant negative moderating effect between indexicality and recipient appreciation on flower and perfume. It implied that when the gift is flower or perfume, female recipients thought the more indexicality the gift was, the higher appreciation she felt. Based on the results, academic implications and managerial applications were further discussed.

The particular area of personal interaction is Pinter's main theme, and it is important to understand the phenomena he concerns. Assumedly, Pinter likes to apply the games and rituals in his plays. Only in the games and rituals, will the characters in the plays expose their vulnerabilities and terror. To exist, they have to fight against the menace that threatens their security. In Pinter's three plays, the outsider plays the role of meancer, and the insiders always play the role of the victim. In the game, no matter who is the winner, all of them will be menaced and victimized in the end. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter I examines Pinter's background, his dramaturgy shaped by his closeness to the "Theatre of the Absurd," and the significance of games and rituals in his plays. This thesis will be done by approaching the subject from two main theories: Eric Berne's Games People Play and Erving Goffman's Interaction Ritual. The main body of this thesis is devoted to the exploration of the games and rituals separately in Pinter's three plays. Chapter II focuses on The Birthday Party. On the one hand, the play is a power game. On the other hand, the play is a game of Stanley's death and rebirth. In addition, the play represents a victim-victor ritual. Chapter III considers the territorial imperative in The Caretaker. The play ends with Davies's expulsion brought about through a series of games and rituals. Chapter IV primarily deals with Ruth's sex and dominance in The Homecoming. And the play represents how Ruth breaks away from her plight and conquers a new place to be her home. Chapter V not only traces these three plays' thematic progression, but also suggests how Pinter's technique of presentation contributes to his incisive treatment of the theme of games and rituals in these three plays.

Harold Pinter, the Nobel Literature Prize Winner of 2005, is one of the most challenging playwrights in the late twentieth century to the early twenty-first. His drama has aroused plenty of discussions and interpretations based on different theories. However, Pinter insists that none of his plays is started from any kind of theory and that the characters are his first consideration. Among all the criticism, psychology analysis is widely implied. Thus, it is reasonable to read Pinter’s work in a psychological way. This thesis will examine the puer aeternus archetype in Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party through the process of Jungian individuation to get more understanding of Pinter’s work as well as part of human psyche. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction of the process of Jungian individuation, the definition of the puer aeternus archetype, and the puer aeternus character in The Birthday Party. The process of individuation is the process that one becomes aware of his individuality, his relationship with other things in the world, and finally becomes more understanding and accepting of complexity within and without. The process can be divided into three stages. In the first stage, one’s relationship with the mother will affect the development of his self identity. In the second stage, his relationship with the father will influence his interaction with the world. In the third stage, he will explore his inner self and reach the goal of self-realization. The puer aeternus archetype is a neurotic character type which forms as a result of poor self identity and frustrating experiences when he confronts the world. This type of people procrastinates or refuses to face the responsibilities of an adult even after they have reached adulthood. Stanley Webber in The Birthday Party is such kind of character. Then the succeeding Chapters Two, Three and Four will discuss the puer Stanley’s process of individuation by looking into his relationships with the mother archetype and the father archetype prospectively. Stanley has a love-hate relationship with the mother, which contributes to his missing self identity, encourages his delay of facing the reality and hinders his development in the process of individuation. The father archetype tries to assist him to recognize his relationship with the environment but gives Stanley great anxiety and fear, so Stanley defences fiercely. Finally, the father archetype succeeds in making Stanley leave the mother’s protection to face the reality with their language and authority. The birthday party, the climax of the play, is a ritual of Stanley’s rebirth that brings Stanley to go on his process of individuation. Finally, Chapter Five concludes Stanley’s process of individuation and the reflection we learn from the play. The play manifests the anxiety and frustration we may have in our process toward individuation. However, escaping cannot help us grow. Only when we face the reality and learn to know our relationship with everything in the world will we know ourselves well and realize ourselves.

This thesis explores three of Harold Pinter’s plays — The Room, The Dumb Waiter and The Birthday Party — in the first three chapters via close readings of some sections of each of these “comedies of menace.” Here the typical Pinter themes/techniques of silence (the Pinter pause), uncertainty, extremely colloquial and sometimes rough or violent speech, enclosure within a confined space, and ambiguity are analyzed and discussed. Then in the fourth chapter the comedy-of-absurd dramatic techniques and existential themes of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot are discussed and compared with Pinter’s themes and techniques, for Pinter was much influenced by Godot. He was also influenced by Kafka, and in the fifth chapter the Kafkaesque themes and techniques which also remind us of those of Pinter and Beckett are discussed: a man’s “being guilty” though he does not know what his sin or crime was; enclosure within small and unfamiliar spaces; a constant feeling of uncertainty and anxiety; an overriding sense of life’s meaninglessness. Certain ancient mythic and religious themes, such as those related to prophesy, death, the underworld and the (im) possibility of “freedom” or “salvation” that we find in all of these works are also analyzed and compared.
