The effect of bismuth on the electrochemistry of the lead acid battery has been investigated using the techniques of linear sweep voltammetry, chronocoulometric and galvanostatic cycling, potentiostatic pulse experiments and corrosion measurements. Optical and scanning electron microscopy enabled a morphological examination of the electrodes to be carried out.

Abstract:
The electrical and structural properties of thin film bismuth deposited under various growth conditions, onto substrates of glass, silicon and gallium arsenide have been investigated. These have been analysed by four point probe measurements, X-ray diffraction and by direct SEM and FIB imaging. The systematic investigation of the affect of growth conditions led to the discovery of the prolific growth of bismuth nanowires protruding from the surface to a length of 100 μm. This thesis explores some of the process conditions of sputtered and evaporated bismuth.

Photoelectrodes and photovoltaic devices have been prepared via multiple thin film deposition methods. Aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD), electrodeposition (ED), chemical bath deposition (CBD) and doctor blade technique (DB) have been used to deposit binary and ternary metal oxide films on FTO glass substrates. <p>Thermoelectric materials convert temperature differences into electricity and vice versa. Such materials utilize the Seebeck effect for power generation and the Peltier effect for refrigeration. In the Seebeck effect, a temperature gradient across a material causes the diffusion of charged carriers across that gradient, thus creating a voltage difference between the hot and cold ends of the material. Conversely, the Peltier effect explains the fact that when current flows through a material a temperature gradient arises because the charged carriers exchange thermal energy at the contacts.

The need of a stable production of At-211 is necessary to continue research in alpha-particle targeted radionuclide therapy. Our objectives were to establish the production of Astatine-211 at Texas A&M Cyclotron Institute, optimize the production methods to reduce the generation of contaminants and maximize At-211 production, and assess the radiological safety aspects of At-211 production. The production of the alpha-particle emitting radionuclide At-211 was performed at the Texas A&M Cyclotron Institute using the K500 superconducting cyclotron following the production reaction Bi-209(α, 2n)
