This thesis describes the growth of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) and multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) films via chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The synthesis of a range of bismuth(III) β-diketonate complexes was carried out via a ligand-exchange reaction between [Bi(N(SiMe3)2)3] and the respective free ligand, and crystal structures of [Bi(dbm)3]2 and [Bi(acac)3] are reported. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were performed to compare the electrodeposition characteristics of bismuth on ruthenium. Two types of electrodes were used for comparison: a Ru shot electrode (polycrystalline) and a thin film of radio-frequency sputtered Ru on a Ti/Si(100) support. Experiments were performed in 1mM Bi(NO3)3/0.5M H2SO4 with switching potentials between -0.25 and 0.55V (vs. KCl sat. Ag/AgCl) and a 20mV/s scan rate. Transverse Field muon spin relaxation (TF-muSR) experiments were performed in external magnetic fields 1.0, 2.7, 3.0, 4.5, 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0 T along the Bi2212 crystalline c-axis. For the first time, the heterodyned fitting analysis technique shows that the field profiles on the ab basal planes of single crystal Bi2212 are symmetric in all experimental fields 1.0--7.0 T and at all experimental temperatures 2.0-90.0 K. Kinetics and thermodynamics of bismuth (Bi) underpotential deposition (UPD) on ruthenium (Ru) and on electrochemically formed Ru oxide are studied using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance technique. The Bi UPD and Bi bulk deposition are observed both on Ru and on electrochemically formed Ru oxide electrodes. The anodic peak potential of Bi UPD shifts slightly to positive potential as the scan rate increases. A radiopacidade e a resposta tecidual do cimento Portland (CP) acrescido de óxido de bismuto (OB) nas concentrações de 0, 15, 20, 30 e 50%, determinadas em peso, foram avaliadas. Para a análise da radiopacidade, foi seguida a norma ISO 6876/2001. A densidade radiográfica foi mensurada em milímetros de alumínio (mmAl) e a análise estatística realizada utilizando-se os testes de ANOVA e Tukey-Kramer (p<0,05). It was found that the formation and surface morphology of Bi2O3 1D nanostructures were affected by the thickness of seeding layer. FE-SEM images show that the as-grown nanostructures are nanocones. The diameter of Bi2O3 nanocones increases with seeding layer thickness. However, the density of nanocones decreases with seeding layer thickness.
