Since the financial crisis, bitcoin has become a pioneer among virtual currencies, and much attention has been focused on its mechanisms, market risk and expected development. Despite extensive research into these aspects, the broader significance of bitcoin's existence has gone unnoticed. A critical facet is Bitcoin mining, notorious for its substantial energy consumption and subsequent carbon emissions. This dynamic interplay with the environment and energy market is a pivotal yet understudied aspect of Bitcoin's impact. Consequently, this paper seeks to fill this research gap by synthesizin

Cryptocurrency, a form of digital currency that has an open and decentralized system and uses cryptography to enhance security and control the creation of new units, is touted to be the next step from conventional monetary transactions. Many Cryptocurrencies exist today, with Bitcoin being the most prominent of them. Cryptocurrencies are generated by mining, as a fee for validating any transaction. The rate of generating hashes, which validate any transaction, has been increased by the use of specialized machine such as ASICs, running complex hashing algorithms like SHA-256, thereby leading to

Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency to participate in a network and receive compensation for online remittance and mining without any intervention from a third party, such as financial institutions. Bitcoin mining is done through proof of work (PoW). Given its characteristics, the higher hash rate results in a higher probability of mining, leading to the emergence of a mining pool, called a mining organization. Unlike central processing units or graphics processing units, high-cost application-specific integrated circuit miners have emerged with performance efficiency. The problem is that the

The shift in computational paradigm towards quantum computation allows the entire search space of the golden nonce to be queried at once by exploiting quantum superpositions and entanglement. Using Grover’s algorithm, a solution can be extracted in time O(2256/t), where t is the target value for the nonce. This is better using a square root over the classical search algorithm that requires O(2256/t) tries. We then estimate a time-varying vector error correction model, and also the cointegration between bitcoin's price and Bitcoin network's hash rate, a commonly used production cost proxy.
